rally taking place in oakland. crews are working to clear the wreckage of the collapsed bridge in baltimore. why the road to recovery is going to be a long one for the workers there for it. thanks for joining us, i'm brian hackney. >> i'm andrea nakano. after a late start, the california department of fish and wildlife will be ending crab season this year early. >> max darrow reports on the innovation that may change everything. >> reporter: another year, another crab season along the california coast. the department of fish and wildlife says effective april 8, fisheries using vertical line gear in the waters south of the mendocino county line will have to call it quits for the season. the reason entanglement risk for whales to feed. >> it's one of the unexpected surprises that climate change has thrown at us. we're trying to figure out how to adapt. >> reporter: the senior

scientist with oceana and the advocacy group focused on conservation. >> due to climate change and changes in the warming of the ocean, it has been pushing the whales closer to shore where it is resulting in a greater overlap where the fishing gear is. >> reporter: as a result it has become the norm in recent years for the start of crab season to be delayed and that end to be accelerated by several weeks, if not months. they believe innovation and corporation will be key to finding solutions that will work for the fishery and the whales. >> i'm for one optimistic. i'm hopeful. with new science and collaboration across unlikely partners, right? partnering up with the conservation groups. i think we can find solutions. that's our goal. it's not just about saving the whales, but how to make sure we have safe waters for the whales and have a vibrant fishery to be proud of here in california. >> reporter: he says some of

the optimism will come from newfound interest in new ways to fish that would allow for ropeless fishing. >> this spring there are 20 fishermen signed up to actually do a large scale test of this new technology. if successful, they could provide a pathway in the future to have whale safe fishing right alongside whales to share the ocean, and we can extend the crab season and give fishermen that opportunity back to keep fishing. >> reporter: but historically some crabbers have expressed concerns over the cost of newer fishing methods, saying they are far more expensive. >> obviously it is hard to take a fishery that has been around for over 100 years and transform it and have them do fishing in a very different way. >> reporter: with the status quo clawing at all parties involved, there is no question that changes are needed. but cracking the current conditions will remain a challenge. people around the world are

celebrating easter sunday. and in windsor, king charles greeted spectators outside the chapel after easter service. worshipers in jerusalem's old city also gathered for mass. >> in the bay area, people spent easter rallying outside city hall. businesses and families came together for fighting for a better oakland. one woman, in fact, came straight to the rally, cleaning up her clothing store that had been broken into this morning. da lin's got her story and more on the solidarity rally. >> reporter: the rally comes at a pivotal time for business owner especially after burglarizing her store on sunday morning. she thought about closing the store back in january. >> it doesn't make you feel ambitious about staying. >> reporter: surveillance footage shows around 5:30 a.m. someone used a hammer to smash the glass door and then kicked

it open. >> and to be violated this way feels terrible. >> this is no respect. you take our suitcases and our stuff and then they took a whole rack. like i don't know. they rolled that whole rack out. >> reporter: she lost roughly $20,000 in merchandise alone. the broadway store downtown oakland is the flagship store with a second store in the rock ridge district. she says both have seen huge declines in traffic because people are afraid to visit oakland. >> we have built a strong brand within the community. we want to be here and we want to thrive here. we don't want to die here. >> reporter: that's why businesses and families rallied in front of city hall for a safer and better oakland. they say no politics, just unity. >> if we have more unity, we could start listening to each other. >> reporter: restaurant owner says while he thanks the

governor for sending in officers, installing cameras, the governor could do more. he wants more resources to fight crime, not just in downtown, but all over the town. he says alameda county and more large corporations should also step in to help small businesses. blue shield, kaiser, clorox, and pg&e just invested $10 million to create a safe zone in uptown and downtown. >> structurally if things don't change and we have real revenue generation going on in the city, a lot of businesses are going to close very soon. >> reporter: nigel and taylor say if everyone works together, they could resurrect the city. >> we're upset with oakland, but we still love oakland. >> reporter: aside from asking the county and state for more resources, business owners are encouraging people from around the bay area to eat and shop in oakland. they say oakland can thrive if people unite. today is international transgender day of visibility, a day that strives to bring

awareness to transgender rights and the fights for equality. here is the celebration today in san francisco. the event included brunch with a show and dance. local vendors and other community organizations were also in attendance. people gathering here say they are celebrating the lives and contributions overtrains people all over the world. other top stories this afternoon. an investigation is underway after two people were killed in a plane crash in truckee. it happened at 6:30 last night as the pilot was trying to land the truckee tahoe airport. the wreckage is near some railroad tracks. the cause of that crash is unknown at this time. back here in the bay area, the driver was killed in the solo crash in san francisco's valley. investigators say a black sedan overturned on diamond street between clipper and 25th yesterday. the driver was taken to the hospital and later died in a prius parked in the area where they had a lot of damage.

in monterey county, a portion of highway 1 near rocky creek bridge is shut down because of that. a bite taken out of the road. folks are trapped as they have been in previous washouts. convoys will lead vehicles in a single file between 8:00 to 4:00 tomorrow. and of course caltrans says avoid travel in the area if you can. and starting tomorrow some minimum wage fast food workers in california get a pay bump from $16 to $20 an hour. the new law will put the state's fast food workers, will put them on track to have the highest guaranteed base salary in the industry. the increase applies to chains with at least 60 locations nationwide. crews started working on clearing the baltimore bridge collapse. cristian benavides reports the road to recovery will be a long one. >> reporter: work to clear the wreckage from this week's

bridge collapse and restore entry to the port of baltimore is underway. officials hope to open a temporary channel to get smaller ships moving back into port. secretary of transportation, pete buttigieg on face the nation. >> this is going to be a very complex process. there are forces acting on that steel, where it will take a lot to make sure it's dismantled safely, to make sure the vessel stays where it is suppose to be, and doesn't swing out into the channel, but it has to be >> the city's mayor says $300,000 has been set aside for the families of the victims who died in the collapse between government and non-profit groups. federally about $2 million in small business loans have been set aside for companies who have been affected. >> the total impact on humans,

and that will begin with the loss of life. that then goes to what's going to happen for those families and economic realities following this. that's where our focus is going to continue to be. >> reporter: baltimore bound container ships being rerouted to other ports. baltimore handles more cars and farm equipment than any other port in america. president biden is scheduled to visit the site of the bridge collapse next week. a wild sight in the skies. we'll tell you where this lightning strike happens in the bay area. plus lots of bikers, shredding the streets of san francisco. the intense competition.

customers have been enjoying special dishes. this year was just fremont second annual restaurant week. they are now one of 14 cities and regions in the bay area that has a restaurant week. tonight is your last chance to get in on the action. go to fremont restaurant week for a list of restaurants. >> that was a bright one. >> check that out. they shared this video of what will appear to be a plane getting struck by lightning in san jose. he was trying to get video of just the storm when it happened with a closer look at it. they would hit the wings, creating faint green sparks. >> and you would have thought they would have said something about it because i'm sure they knew. >> i'm sure they might have said something to air traffic

control. but that's amazing video. i'm glad it all worked out. >> yeah. that happened yesterday afternoon with those thunderstorms that developed late in the day. in fact today there are a few pop-up showers over the ranges. after this, we are pretty much done on monday and tuesday. you won't like wednesday. >> good. let me go over here. as you can see showers building up north and west. it is less active today. we'll look for things to clear up and things to begin to warm up as we look at the bridge. numbers are mostly in the 50s and the mid-60s at the moment where they will get down to the mid-40s tonight and tomorrow. some of the numbers in the 70s.

just down a little bit today. but it's the beginning of the warming trend where the futurecast will show you that monday, tomorrow early morning, there is not much in the way of any rain. but as they go on, things will clear out. and some tuesday morning. tomorrow looks nice and clear and the numbers will begin to warm up as high pressure will build in and that low pressure that was down south will kick inland. so the way that goes and we're going to be looking for things to warm up, even tomorrow, some of the numbers are going to be approaching 70s. we will take san francisco as the general case. replacing the high and it will be a cooling trend for the later half of the week. mostly sunny with just a pop-up shower

or two, that will be it. they will be in the low to mid-70s. and 71 at morgan hill. low to mid-70s will do it for monday by the time we get to houston. up around lakeport and clear lake. as we look ahead though on thursday and friday, they look a little bit warm. there it is. the numbers will continue being in the 70s for the next couple of days. wednesday, we will go back into the mid-60s. then look at thursday, the numbers will fall with a set of car keys and cooler by the later half of the week and expect things to get wet. but that's thursday. next

ncaa men's basketball is up top and the north carolina state wolfpack. they lost seven out of nine games in the regular season. they won five games in five nights to get into the tournament. today on their way to the final four for the first time since 1983. america's big man, dj burns and the hot streaking wolfpack all wolfpack in the second. to pull within one. then under eight to play. give me all three of these and the foul. they stole that possession. the final minute, duke pressing. nc state wasn't having it. horn found burns in the old three-point play and shades of 1983. north carolina state won the south regional in

giants designated catcher. not a shocker. the 2018 number two overall pick lost his starting job at catcher to patrick bailey last season. now the giants, scary moments here. a hard tumble into the padres dugout. all scuffed up. later on they had to leave the game. a tough going for the former cal bear with the start and increasing san diego's lead to 5-0 after a three-run first inning blast. next inning, jeffries got checked out by the trainer. but kim got all the three run homer into the left field building. the lead became 9-0 in the second inning. the bottom of the third, manny machado drove one ricocheting off the bottom of the wall. this will go for a two-run double to extend the lead 12-0. san diego won it 13-4. it really just means the giants get a split of a four-game

series. hey, the a's are on the board with a w. paul blackburn up against the guardians. three strikeouts over seven shutout innings. the a's in great position. but cleveland eventually would wake up. they tie the game. it came down to the bottom of the 9th, bases loaded situation, and abraham toro took one for the team. hit by pitch, won it for the a's, 4-3 in a true walkoff to avoid a sweep. and that we have here at the station. who has made a comeback for the fourth time, liz cook. i don't know what she does. i don't know how she does it, but she has put herself in that position to win the whole darn thing again. >> and she's a master with the bracket. >> it's a bigamistly to hers

that almost blew his ear out. earlier this afternoon, the 22nd annual bring your own big wheel race would take place in san francisco. >> and along vermont and 20th street, a chance for kids and adults to climb onto those areas. and they are racing them down the crooked streets, the point of which i'm not sure and maybe that was the point. >> and i would love to do that one time. it looks fun. >> you're welcomed to. there is always something.

you say there will be some rain coming back. and then cooler temperatures again. is there a reason why? >> you get your hopes up. only to dash them. >> nice weather. >> the weather moves like a wave. if you get a big bubble of high pressure, you get a big wave and a deep froth. we'll be in the 70s for the next couple of days. it will be followed by the unusually lowrie homers and the temperatures will be in th tonight, new calls for peace in turbulent times. ♪ on this easter sunday, pope francis appealing for a cease-fire between russia and ukraine and israel and hamas. but in gaza today, a deadly drone attack outside a hospital diminishes hope for the latest round of peace talks.
