another wet start to the weekend in the bay area causing problems for one community in

the north bay. what is next for a senior center plus the holiday weekend a warning from bay area health officials why they are concerned about the measles. greatforecast. to have you with us. today is saturday, march 30th. i'm max darrow. we begin with the storm that rolled through the bay area friday afternoon and into the night. many communities across the bay saw heavy rain and whipping winds at some point. the storm brought down a tree on top of a senior center on north high street. it broke through the roof in several places. check that out. nobody inside was hurt. we know the senior center will be closed until at least monday. >> it was wild. it sounded like a low rumbling. then just kind of crashes as the branches started hitting, like a large crash. then everyone was calm, though. the seniors in the building for classes, calm and we got everyone out. the storm caused tough driving conditions like the bay

bridge into san francisco. not to worry, not more of this in the next couple of days. let's check on what you can expect this holiday weekend with first alert meteorologist darren peck. >> reporter: we are dealing with the leftovers of this system. saturday will be quieter than friday was. take a look at the futurecast depiction. a few showers off the coast as we go through the morning hours. as we get into the late morning hours, this quiets down. you will see plenty of breaks of blue sky. take a look at the timeframe. that goes through the middle of the day. having said that, keep an eye on this. every once in a while there is the possibility for an isolated shower to move through. when you get the breaks of blue sky on saturday afternoon, don't let that fool you into thinking we are done. we are not. there is the chance for an isolated shower today. we have a lot more to talk about the storm in terms of sunday for easter and noticeable warm up coming our way. the full forecast in a few minutes. some areas are still recovering from the relentless rain from last winter. a prime

example is allen rock park in san jose. a winter storm walloped the park a year ago. up until recently, if you wanted to get in, you had to hike in from the outside. but now as devin feeley shows us, the park is open and accessible than it has been in a long time. >> i have been to eagle rock. i have not been on any of the hike trails. >> reporter: john molena hikes three days a week as he recovers from a nagging knee injury. >> if i'm on an incline, my knee is starting to kill me. that's why i'm walking on pavement as opposed to a trail. >> reporter: san jose's oldest and most beloved park is largely inaccessible to many people since major storms toppled trees, triggered landslides and under cut the only road into the park itself. >> we did have major storms in early 2023 which created a landslide and kind of washed out some of the road.

>> reporter: senior park ranger lana romero says because of that, people had to park in a lot outside the park and hike in. for people with kids or mobility issues, it's quite a challenge. >> we came up with my son and his wife and our grandbaby and the same thing. she was getting tired. we had to put her on our shoulders. >> reporter: the challenge for the city is figuring out how to repair the road and how to pay for it. the current estimate is $19 million for a massive retaining wall that would prevent further erosion. in the interim they reopened one lane of traffic and installed a temporary stoplight. >> we know how much the park means to the community and we love seeing visitors use the park. we are approaching one of the biggest holiday weekends of the year as well as the summer season. >> reporter: allen rock park has historically been a popular destination for families during the easter holiday. john says he is mildly disappointed the city reopened the road without repairing the damage. but for

now he is glad others can enjoy the glorious spring colors of the historic and beautiful park. >> coming out and being able to walk in nature. in other news, harvey milk is preparing to leave san francisco after the first and possibly only trip that it will make to the bay area. as local leaders gathered to celebrate the civil rights icon the ship is named for, a group of protesters nearly managed to run on board. how this happened. >> reporter: everything is calm now. a few hours ago, dozens of protesters were right here where i'm standing. some of them even climbed over the fence. i'm 5'3". you can see how high up the fence goes. they had to get over that to get toward the ship. if you take a look at this video, you can see what it look like when

the protesters were here. some of them chained themselves to the gangway of the ship. it looks like police had to use bold cutters to remove the protesters then arrest some of them. the navy ship is here making the madden voyage to san francisco. it's named after harry milk. there were a group of political leaders celebrating the ship including nancy pelosi and san francisco mayor london breed. the arab resource center claimed the ship was bound for gaza we confirmed with the navy that the ship is not going to gaza or the middle east. after it leaves here, it will be headed back to its home base that is in virginia. it's expected to stay there for at least a year. back to you. the protest did not disrupt

the celebration on board. the u.s. harvey milk is the first vessel to be named after >> there was a time in our not so distant memory when this would havean openly gay person. a 750-foot symbol of how far been impossible. >> what the u.s. navy ship harvey milk is, we celebrate this community that we did not used to celebrate before. >> reporter: there are several ships in the same class currently under construction. they will bear the names of other civil rights heros like ruth bader ginsburg, lucy stone. bay area health departments are warning about a rise in measles cases. the risk of exposure is low but critical that people get vaccinated. so far this year, the cdc confirmed 64 cases across 17 jurisdictions. the vast majority are linked to international travel. >> people in the bay area can get exposed through travel or

visitors coming to our area. we want to make sure that kids have the vaccines at one year of age and a second dose when they are older to protect them. that is protection for life. >> measles is a high will be contagious disease. symptoms include fever, cough, runny nose and followed by the measles rash. almeda health officials warned about a measles ex pots sure at a san leandro restaurant at the suns of liberty on march 9th. coming up, a show of dedication in santa rosa. the group that won't let the rain stop them from getting the pour of a coveted band of bay area beer.

head up for this weekend, make sure you bring chains. okay. we will pick up the forecast on saturday, to show you what is still left to go in terms of rain. there is not a lot. but there are still some isolated showers that continue to show up here. right now is one of the more notable time frames with showers off the coast and probably drifting. they don't have any kind of a real impact for the majority of the bay. what we are watching for are the isolated cells as we get into the middle of the afternoon. those could come in the form of an occasional thunderstorm in which case, even though they are localized and not a lot of them, if you get one over your part of the bay, a good brief downpour. that is possible at any point as we go through saturday. you will see a lot of blue sky. there will be plenty of breaks of blue sky. then watch what happened. by tonight, the system gets pulled away. here is sunday. sunday morning, easter sunday looks great. a lot of blue sky. then showers

pulled through the bay as we go to sunday night. there is not a lot to it. keep your easter sunday plans and even for today, be advised to keep your outdoor plans but know you will be the best gauge should you get an isolated shower in your vicinity. when thunder roars, go indoors. you don't want to be exposed should you get one of those thunderstorms. here is good news on the wind. breezy out there. watch the colors shade away as we get into 1:00, 2:00 this afternoon. the overall system itself is moving south. as it does that, it pulls the wind with it. that will turn off. we are past the worst of the wind in fact. okay. snow is an issue here. even though the rain is not particularly widespread here in the bay, the snow will be consistent throughout the day today and into early sunday. we pick up another foot of snow here. the primary concern from a travel stoned point is today. you have the potential for

delays. going to need chains. there could be temporarily closures as you take a look at i-80 and highway 50. let's look ahead. if you wanted to find a return to spring, i have one. we will look at it two ways. as we get into early next week, watch the temperature trend. below average for friday, saturday and sunday, obviously. by monday and tuesday, the colors that are shaded in the orange and red are showing you where we will be back up above average. that is one way of looking at it. let's do it in the seven-day forecast. we will get into the seven day, which is going to have not only the chance of rain that we are still looking at on here for saturday and sunday, i will bring in the seven day for the bay. you can see there is a drop of rain in here for saturday. no rain in the forecast on sunday. but here is the real headline in the seven-day forecast. we will be

sunny and back near 70. these are the numbers for the interior of the bay. we are in that time of year now where it does make sense to do multiple seven-day forecasts. i will bring one in now that shows us the numbers for inland parts of the bay. now numbers climb into the mid-70s. it doesn't last long. tuesday sunny and 75. some places warmer than that. enjoy that. by the time we get to the end of this next coming week, a week system, small chance of rain arrives by thursday and friday. coming up, do you know the right way to recycle? in this morning's project earth

generated each year around the world. not only that but 40% of all the food we bring home ends up in a landfill. >> it creates methane. methane is a greenhouse gas that can lead to pollution to our environment. >> reporter: 15% of greenhouse gases come from landfills. organic waste like food or soiled paper is not composted it rots and produces methane. that is contributing to more extreme weather events. >> like droughts and wildfires. >> reporter: survey shows more than 55% of americans are confused by recycling including seasoned news veterans found inside the kpix bin soiled paper towels and cups thrown into a landfill, a fruit salad in a zip lock dumped into compost and unemptied cup of soup tossed in recycling. >> organic food in the compost. soft plastic in the trash.

you for joining us. i'm max darrow. an update on the baltimore bridge collapse. cranes arrived with teams of engineers tasked with the tough job to clear the wreckage of the francis scott key bridge and reopen the busiest port. how to break it into sizes. it could take' four lifts to clear the portion that is on the cargo ship. officials expect a long process to clear and reopen the port. wendy gillette has the latest developments. >> reporter: a group of construction workers gathered in the memory of their coworkers killed in the key bridge collapse. an immigrant advocacy group highlighted the sacrifices of all of them. >> the workers in the cold, during the pandemic so our lives are made easier.

>> reporter: four are missing including jose lopez. >> i feel bad. only god knows how hard my heart aches. maybe he was desperate trying to escape. >> reporter: the workers' bodies can't be recovered until the debris is removed. the largest crane on the east coast is in place, able to lift pieces up to 1,000 tons. first engineers are devise ing the best ways to extract it all. >> i know everyone wants to see things moving. you need to know, to trust that behind the scenes it's moving. >> reporter: there is notice timeline on when the port could reopen to ships. >> i want this done quickly. i want it done right. but this is going to be a long road. >> reporter: president biden will visit baltimore next week

breaks of blue sky on saturday afternoon, don't let that fool you into thinking we are done. we are not. still a chance of an isolated shower today. a lot more to talk about with the storm in terms of sunday for easter and a warm up coming our way. we are keeping an eye -- close eye on a story that developed in peru. government agents raided the home of the nation's president. it involved undisclosed luxury watches. agents searched for several rolex watches inside the home she claims to have bought. authorities want to know how she could afford such expensive timepieces on a public salary. she said she used money she saved for decades. after the president failed to provide proof she bought them herself, authorities launched the raid. she hasn't commented so far. more trouble on united airlines. seven people on the same flight wound up in the hospital after experiencing severe turbulence on the trip from tel aviv to newark, new jersey. strong winds diverted

the plane to stewart airport. when it landed, several passengers complained of nausea and vomiting. authorities say nobody that went to the hospital had serious injuries. after they refueled, the united flight finished its journey to newark. police in oakland say they made three arrests in an ongoing piracy case. several boat owners had the vessels burglarized or stolen altogether. a recent warrant search on two boats the suspects were living in turned up items stolen from a business near the marina. at this point, no word on whether they are connected to any of the other crimes. the four biggest employers in oakland are putting up their own money in a bid to make the downtown area safer. kaiser, blue shield, clorox and pg&e say the money will beef up security around the offices. one recent crime victim says it is welcome news. >> spent a few hours here. i

noticed a lot more police officers driving around. the companies that pay for the extra patrols say it will help everyone that works, lives and shops here. >> i love my job. i love serving the people. >> reporter: this social worker spends a lot of her time in oakland driving from one home visit to the next. last monday morning she was stopped at a red light while on her way to a client's house. someone shattered her passenger window. >> he reached in and grabbed my big bag, my work bag that has the laptop, phones, wallet, everything, my client's information. everything. and ran off that way, the opposite way while i was so nervous, scared, frozen. >> reporter: she yelled and

honked but the teenager was gone. >> i was surprised and shocked that this happened right here at lake shore. a busy street with people walking everywhere. >> reporter: nancy is not alone. oakland police recorded about 3700 robberies and 17,000 burglaries in 2023. some of the victims include 0 downtown oakland office workers. four of the biggest oakland employers are spending $10 million to beef up security in uptown and downtown to create a safe zone. blue shield of california, kaiser permanente, clorox and pg&e will pay for patrols. >> i did not think i would be in the business of security and safety. i hope not to be for very long. >> reporter: the president and coo of blue shield of california says they have paid to fund more ambassadors for on demand buddy escorts. they can walk people to their cars or a restaurant. >> off-duty police officers

patrolling key areas of downtown oakland. that is going to increase the safety for everyone who is in those areas. that is a benefit that the community has. >> reporter: the employers will pay for ride services and public transportation so the workers can get to work safely. >> it's a major issue. it's very important, especially when a lot of us had to come back and work in the office. >> reporter: many people welcome the added security but says something the city and the police department should have already done. as for nancy, she is on high alert when coming to a traffic light. but she is still optimistic about oakland. >> we should not be living in fear. we should not be at each other's throats. we should be working together so build a strong community. >> reporter: the extra police patrols started this week. the company says they will monitor and look at the data at a later time to see how long this program will last.

>> in statement, oakland mayor is grateful for the help from the private sector and they can work together to improve downtown safety. hundreds of additional surveillance cameras are coming to the east bay freeways and city of oakland. governor newsom announced that chp and oakland police will install 480 new cameras. that includes 290 on oakland city streets and 190 on highways in the east bay. they are similar to license plate readers but identify stolen cars by features like make, model and color. >> this is proven technology. >> this is building among efforts we made a few weeks ago with a surge from the california highway patrol. >> the oakland based antipolice terror project criticized the announcement. when we decide to deploy 480 new cameras, how many can be housed with the

welcome back. a live look at the golden gate bridge on this saturday morning. traffic is moving nicely. a beautiful view. a great look at what hopefully will be a great saturday in the bay area. a long contested project is kicking back up near one of the united states most visited national parks. as you ran yum rises soar, they have ramped up mining less than 10 miles from the grand canyon. uranium is used by nuclear plants. the biden administration and dozens of other countries pledged to boost the capacity of nuclear power to battle climate change and lesson russia's influence over the supply chain. native american leaders are calling for more regulatory oversight

gone to juvenile hall, got shot unfortunately. i see them carrying that trauma and that violence. they don't know how to process. >> reporter: so andrew and his nonprofit served the youth and families in a multitude of ways from the outdoor center at san antonio park. oakland tribe not only partners with food banks but offers free services like early childhood play groups, afternoon clubs at local schools, mentorships, paid internships, summer camps and community gatherings to build character, confidence and connection. tribes 100 plus volunteers and 30 staff members serve 50,000 people a year like april nunez that is grateful that the tribe cares for her whole family. >> a big difference. they are here in the community. the kids can probably ask for help. >> reporter: tribe ambassadors are are out in the community

for all who celebrate, happy easter weekend. many people took part in good friday celebrations. in rome, the pope skipped out on part of the procession in order to protect his health. he was originally expected to join the nighttime procession at the rome coliseum but made a last minute decision not to. the vatican says he wants to conserve energy. pope francis will preside over an easter vigil service in st. peter's basilica. he joined cardinals for the passion of the lord service praying at the

altar from his wheelchair. many said he looked in good health earlier in the week. the news that he skipped last night's procession led some to concerns. in new york city about a thousand catholics took part in the way of the cross procession. it started at the cathedral basilica of st. james and end going in manhattan. catholic leaders took turns carrying the cross. >> i tried to do something different and give my time and energy to come here. i fast, pray and that means a lot to me. >> the way of the cross is a good friday tradition in the city for nearly 30 years. migrants led prayers and reenacted the way of the cross across the texas border. a representative wants u.s. politicians to help them instead of 'perceiving them as a problem. followers dressed as
