berkeley is no stranger to protests and demonstrations. in fact, they've been part of campus culture for decades. but a group of israeli students says one demonstration got scary fast when protesters broke down the door of their oncampus event. our itay hod spoke with a student who was forced underground to escape. >> i saw a girl get grabbed by the neck and shoved. i saw my friend get spat at. and i saw just how much anger and hatred they had towards us at this moment. >> reporter: for about half an hour last week, sharon, a 19-year-old berkeley student, says she feared for her life. >> i couldn't understand, like, where this loud noise was coming from, and it's just them going like, like this with all of their strength, all their might to the point that they shattered the glass

completely. >> reporter: on february 26th, hundreds of pro-palestinian protesters broke down the door of uc berkeley's play house, where an israeli speaker was set to address jewish students. the demonstration appears to have been organized by a student group bears for palestine. in a facebook post the day before, the group called on people to protest the event, which was sponsored by three jewish organizations. >> i thought, am i living in 1939 nazi germany? >> reporter: sharon says the mob became violent, forcing her and her friends to flee through an underground exit. what's going through your mind while this is happening? fully mean, i'm just thinking why is this happening. why is it that we, just like any other club, can't simply, you know, have our event, have our private event peacefully. >> reporter: on monday, the university announced it's investigating the incident as a hate crime, slamming the

protest as unacceptable. but sharon says she's been feeling uneasy for a while now by things like the palestinian flags at the university's iconic gate. >> almost every time i see it i do have a visceral reaction to it. it does make me feel extremely uncomfortable. >> reporter: and it's not just at berkeley. a recent survey by the anti-defamation league found that since the start of the school year, nearly three in four jewish students had experienced or witnessed anti-semitism. ever since hamas attacked israel on october 7th, sharon's parents have begged her not to wear her star of david in public, but sharon says she won't be intimidated. >> this is a symbol of my people, and if someone gives me a dirty look for it or try to ostracize me for it, i don't care, because this is who i am. >> we did reach out to the campus organization bears for palestine multiple times since last week. we did want to hear

their side of the story. as of tonight, we have not heard back. uc berkeley gave us a statement saying they received reports of overt anti-semitism, including allegations of physical battery. meanwhile, major hung ser gripping the gaza strip. a huge shortage of food and clean water. it's a challenge for trucks to get aid to the most vulnerable people, especially in the north. in the south there was chaos at this aid delivery convoy in rafah where desperate palestinians scrambled for flour to feed their families. unicef says a growing number of children in gaza are dying of dehydration and malnutrition. an emergency room physician from the bay area is seeing this absolute devastation firsthand. he's been in gaza for several weeks now treating trauma patients in tents. >> here the healthcare infrastructure has been completely destroyed. we're essentially the only trauma

you can just hear how powerful that is. this was a massive explosion at a factory in michigan that's sending debris raining down a mile away. in fact, it's hundreds of explosions, some of them all at once. they've been going on for hours now, but so far there's no word on exactly what is inside of that building or how it caught fire in the first place. back here in the bay area, eyes in the sky helped vallejo police strak down a sideshow suspect. a chp helicopter followed a man who was apparently doing donuts in an intersection in vallejo. he jumped into another car but

couldn't get away from the helicopter that led police on the ground right to him. one east bay police department says a 40-year-old man had an explanation ready when his wife and mother-in-law vanished, but officers say that excuse fell apart and he's now accused of murdering them. his 40-year-old wife and 70-year-old mother were last seen in september. the husband told police they drove to southern california after a family argument, but the two of them still have not turned up. and despite the fact that no bodies have been found, police say they have evidence the women were murdered. tonight the husband is facing two counts. up in the sierra, the monster blizzard has brown through, but it's left behind ten feet piles of snow. emily schmidt shows us how people are digging out. >> reporter: when the year's biggest snowfall closed down the ski resort at tahoe, the proof was there from the door and the windshield. the resort's social media page

showing massive snow drifts, reporting 100-mile-per-hour winds. the kind of storm another resort director says he hopes for. >> this is setting us up for the rest of the year. s that great storm. i keep my fingers crossed, because they've kind of let us down a few time this is year. i was kind of like are we going to get three or four feet >> reporter: instead measurements ranged from seven to more than ten feet, stranding cars and drivers. caltrans shared video showing vehicles briefly trapped on highway 50 over the weekend. hundreds of vehicles headed to and from tahoe felt the impact as snow piled up. >> whiteout conditions, they're not letting anybody through. >> yeah, you giving up? >> yeah. >> reporter: monday more than 70 miles of interstate 80 opened after more than a day shut down. chains were required to get over the donner pass. the snow made for quick slides down but the biggest impact may be what went up. for the first time this winter, the california department of water

resources says the statewide snow water equivalent, that's how much water is in the snow, is above average. more snow now means more snow melt later. promising a critical water source for the state in warmer weather when this winter storm is just a distant memory. >> at palisades tahoe, strong winds caused some problem, actually blew out the windows in this part of the building that controls the ski lift. completely filling it with snow, as you see. a lot to clean up there. other at sierra at tahoe, they've been trying to dig out of this, the bottom of one of their chair lifts was buried this afternoon. our kelsi thorud has been a trooper this week covering this storm from truckee and standing out in the blizzard doing her live shot after live shot for hours. at one point she and her photographer jim could pairly get out of their hotel parking lot. but with interstate 80 back open, they managed to finally make it out today. >> here we go, we're at the summit. so this is how things

are looking up here. it's still down to just one lane of traffic. and now we're starting to make our way down hill, but you can see all the snow. >> yeah, paul had been talking about it for days in no uncertain terms. paul, i have to say, you were very clear. you're very clear when you say do not drive to the mountains when it gets like that. and we saw so many people -- we were just talking about it before the show -- so many people stuck. >> i-08 was closed for days. the reason is just a ton of snow. these are the amounts that piled up in the sierra. sugar bowl, 10.5 feet of snow. that's just a mind boggling number. soda springs was close to that, just under ten feet. eight feet on the dot at palisades tahoe, and a 190-mile-an-hour wind gust, one of the peaks above palisades. the central sierra snow lab picked up just over six feet of snow out of this system. the snow showers are winding down, and it has made a huge

difference. the average of the -- percentage of average where we were a couple months ago was 25% of normal snowfall as of late january. but as -- excuse me, late december, early january. it's monday, my brain hasn't kicked in yet. we've caught up to what is normal this time of year. when you total up the three regions, we're very slightly above what's normal. showers over the north bay, similar activities in storm for us tomorrow. it's not going to add up to a whole lot. we're going to be seeing just a chance for a few showers here and there, mostly -- more miss than hit, but there's still a chance, so grab the umbrella, the rain jacket as you're heading out early tomorrow morning. let's take a look at how much rain did accumulate. we'll see if i can speak clearly for the rest of this weathercast. the amounts are variable depending on where those heaviest downpours set

up. in general, we expected about an inch to two inches of total rainfall out of the dours of the four days of wet weather we experienced, and that's about what we added up. some spots falling a little bit short, but almost two inches of total rainfall for downtown san francisco. also just short of two inches of rain around novato. the santa cruz mountains picked up more than 3 inches of rain over the course of that four-day timeframe from thursday through yesterday with some of those lingering showers still out there today. there's another chance of rain heading our way on wednesday, so let's pick up futurecast and start the clock here wednesday morning when most of us are still going to be dry. the bulk of the energy with this system, bulk of the moisture is going to miss us to the south. gives us one of our better chances of rain as we head through wednesday into wednesday afternoon. but it's not going to amount to very much at all. less than 0.25 an inch of rain pretty much across the board. it's not a guarantee everybody is going to see measurable rain. a 50/50 chance. the unsettled weather pat certain going to continue. the six to ten day outlook from the

climate prediction center takes us through the weekend into the first half of next week. it's a good chance of wetter than normal conditions in that timeframe. beyond the seven-day forecast the eight to 14-day outlook sends us back into a normal mid-march weather pattern, which means some rain chances, but they should get spaced out more as we head farther into the month of march. right now as we look towards downtown, seeing a mix of clear skies and a lot of cloud cover as well that's keeping temperatures from teardroping off too far. down to 46 in livermore, 49 in santa rosa. everybody else still in the 50s. mostly leveling off in the 40s as we head through the rest of tonight with temperatures being held up a little bit by that layer of clouds overhead, keeping too much of the warmth from today from escaping into space, what little warmth we had with temperatures running five to seven degrees below average. the best chance of showers is going to be for the north bay. that's where temperatures are cooler, upper 50s to around 60 degrees. most of the rest of the bay area in the low to mid-60s, which is close to if maybe still a degree or two below what's normal for this

time of year. we do have warmer temperatures late they are week to go along with a break in the rain chances, so there's some good news, what you've been waiting for. after scattered showers on wednesday we get a couple of dry days, thursday and friday. a some of the warmest spots close to 70 degrees to finish off the workweek. it would not be a weekend in 2024 without at least one chance of rain. and that's going to arrive on saturday. that looks pretty light, but it'll be out there. dry weather on sunday and then yet another chance of rain heads our way monday and tuesday of next week. eventually we're going put together a stretch of three, four, five consecutive dry days. it's just not going to happen any time soon, sara? >> oh my gosh. and it's a monday. you can't talk, my ear piece is falling out. how are we even going to get through? >> mass hysteria. >> to 11:35. >> 15 minutes to go. >> vern is going to carry us through a lot of it, thank goodness. the blizzard put a
