at contours to the body to relieve pain right where it hurts. and did we mention, it really, really sticks? salonpas, it's good medicine. on the afternoon edition, new details in the chase that ended with one man dead and four deputies injured in santa rosa. sonoma sheriff says the crime scene spans several locations including stony point road between bellevue avenue and todd road. it started after midnight when officers got a call of a suspect brandishing a

rifle. authorities say when deputies arrived, the man led them on a chase. >> he fled in a vehicle starting a pursuit. deputies pursued. the suspect stopped, fired rounds at the deputies. they returned fire. the suspect got back in his vehicle and fled again. he fired additional shots. the suspect then later crashed already the suspect died at the scene. four deputies were injured. one deputy sustained a head injury and is in critical but stable condition. another was shot in the leg. two other officers had injuries to their hands. stony point road between south of bellevue road remains closed as authorities investigate the shootings . good afternoon. i am ryan yamamoto. tomorrow is of course super tuesday, busiest day of the primary campaign and a crucial moment for president joe biden and donald trump who are the overwhelming front

runners for democratic and republican presidential nominations. more than a third of delegates are up for grabs tomorrow with 15 states including california and one u.s. territory holding their primary elections. voting in california is already underway. people have been dropping off ballots. mail ballots must be post marked by tuesday to count. the highest profile race in california is the one to succeed dianne feinstein. the crowded field includes democratic representatives schiff, porter, lee and former baseball star and republican steve garby. a poll shows garby is favored by 27%. schiff is at 25%. porter 19%. lee received 8%. the most consequential proposition on the state ballot is probably proposition one. governor newsom is in san francisco today to get last minute votes for the measure this weekend. the governor was

in los angeles county pushing the $6.3 billion bond measure. it is a key part of the governor's plan to create drug and mental health treatment beds. critics claim it diverts billions away from already effective mental health services. >> they're talking about housing and getting people housing. the bulk of what's going in will be to build facilities and hospital beds. hospital beds are not homes. >> if proposition one passes it will make changes to the mental health services act passed in 2004 which expanded and modified county mental health systems. race for president with a major ruling today by the highest courted, supreme court ruled former president trump can stay on the colorado ballot and states cannot use 14th amendment to disqualify him for running again for president. >> i want to start by thanking

the supreme court for its unanimous decision today. it was a very important decision. >> voters in colorado and other states sought to do that because of his conduct surrounding the january 6 attack on the u.s. capitol. >> reporter: the nation's highest court handed former president trump is unanimous victory ruling that colorado cannot keep him off the ballot for the 2024 presidential election. >> the rationale here really is we don't want states to be able to do this. >> reporter: at issue was a narrow colorado supreme court decision in a case brought by voters arguing trump should be removed from ballots because he committed insurrection on january 6 and was disqualified under section three of the 14th amendment which states no person shall be a senator or representative in congress or elector of president and vice president or hold any office who took an oath and engaged in insurrection. >> those who violated their

oath to the constitution once before will do it again and even worse if they're allowed back into power. >> reporter: during oral arguments in early february, justices seemed skeptical whether states can use the obscure constitutional provision to kick trump off the ballot rather than leaving it to congress. the court didn't weigh in whether january 6 was insurrection or whether former president trump engaged in it. justices instead focused on the structural issue, whether courts can go on their own and enforce this civil war era provision and the unanimous answer was no, they cannot. >> without congress helping us figure out who engaged in insurrection, whether or not there is a problem, whether or not somebody is found liable or guilty, it's not up to one state. congress needs to set the rules. >> you cannot take somebody out of a race. the voters can take the person out of the race quickly. but a court shouldn't

be doing that and the supreme court saw that. >> reporter: trump still faces criminal cases surrounding events of january 6. >> former president trump is claiming criminal cases against him should be tossed because he has presidential immunity. supreme court agreed to hear arguments whether he does or does not have the immunity. cbs news bay area will have the results for tomorrow on air and streaming on kpix.com and the cbs news app. to our first alert weather, good news for drivers in the sierra. interstate 80 is open over donner summit. cal trans has been stopping travelers heading east bound since friday night because of the massive snowstorm. the interstate is open to passenger vehicles and big rigs are being held. in the bay area we have a break in the rain after a wet windy weekend but the cold temperatures are going to stick around. jessica burch gives us a sneak peek. over the weekend, sierra saw heavy snow fall totals. in

the bay we got our fair share of rain from the same cold front that moved in from offshore. we got close to an inch in san jose, passed an inch in half moon bay and san francisco and passed two inches into novato where head lands got hit with some of the heaviest rain so far. as we look at the next days, today, tomorrow, into our wednesday, we will continue to see unsettled weather. what does that mean? if we look at futurecast, light speckles of showers moving in at times with dense clouds from offshore. we will watch that be the case into our tuesday forecast mostly in the north bay and all the way to our wednesday forecast too. luckily by thursday and friday we start to clear with sunshine around the corner heading into this weekend's forecast. in alameda, behind the recall effort against district attorney pamela price submitted signatures to the county officials. the group said they collected more than 110,000 signatures for the petition.

in monterey place are looking for suspects who they say pulled up to a party and opened fire. three men were wearing masks and dark clothing, got on you of a silver car and fired at the group killing three it scene. a fourth person died at a hospital. no word on what led to the shooting. a napa teen recovering

after a catastrophic snow boarding accident. the 15 years old was snow boarding in tahoe when he caught an edge on the slopes and crashed into a tree. he fractured his spine in two places and underwent hours of surgery. he has rods holding his spine together and blake who is also a stand out athlete in napa cannot move his legs. despite the obstacles, he is facing the challenge with positivity and grace. >> there is always light. you won't see it at first but you will realize that it was all worth it. every day just believe that it will get better and it will. >> thriving in every way. he won't let this stop him. >> the napa valley community is rallying behind the family. locals and strangers have supported a fund raiser set up to help with medical costs. cal trans releasing this

video of crews pulling a car on highway 50 in south lake tahoe. several cars were trapped after a blizzard in several inches of snow. no one was hurt. the last days have been brutal with more than ten feet of less snow. madison is in truckee with a look at the conditions. >> opening my back door right now, it's almost like a prison of snow. >> reporter: that's one way to describe consecutive days of blizzard conditions. ron in truckee had to dig his way out. >> here are our cars buried. here is the street. this is our front porch behind me. you can't really see it there. >> reporter: mounds of snow behind him were cleared saturday and replaced by fresh snow on sunday afternoon. wind and snow, a constant since the start of the most severe winter storm to hit the sierra this year. travel has been

are seeing a mix of sun and clouds with a quick splash of showers at times into the afternoon hours today. that doesn't amount to much. in the grand scheme of things we'll get close to around a hundredths of an inch in fairfield. we'll continue to watch this unsettled weather pattern develop as we head into the next couple days with on and off showers from offshore into our wednesday. that's the last we will see of the rain and we start to clear up into our thursday and friday forecast. i know it was a hectic weekend with heavy showers widespread throughout the area and really heavy snow in the sierra, we are getting much needed dry break into our thursday and friday with a little bit of a warm up. it's going to be nice. it was a gusty weekend with a wind advisory for our weekend set up. friday into saturday that allowed us to see winds around 45 miles per hour along the coast. that's not the case today. winds at max will be close to 15 miles per hour. let's take it a step back. i

want to show you what the day is looking like. throughout the bay area after that cold front moved in over the weekend not only producing rain and winds but cooler temperatures too, this is what we were left with. we are talking about upper 50s and lower 60s for daytime highs from livermore to red wood city and back up into wine country. the only place we are seeing 60s is san jose. to put that into perspective, look at the next seven days. we will all be in the 60s by tomorrow. we warm up to the upper 60s in time for friday with a lot of sunshine in store for us. that's the light at the end of the tunnel this week but into saturday more showers return into the bay area. chemistry behind the beauty. i am danya bacchus with a look at how one woman is making sure there are products for everyone. >> catch our live newscasts plus news and weather updates

cvs and walgreens will start selling abortion pill. it will be available in states where abortion is legal. cvs will begin filling prescriptions in massachusetts and rhode island in weeks ahead with plans to expand to additional states. >> still need a prescription. this is not over the counter. you still need a prescription. in the past, access has been through speciality clinics which stock the medication or through telemedicine and mail order. it really does open avenues for women to access. >> the price for the pill is about $79 though some women will be able to use health insurance to purchase the drug. business of beauty is a multi billion dollar industry. while marketing campaigns show faces of different skin tones, when it comes to those creating and developing the product some say work needs to be done. this women's history month danya bacchus introduce us to a

at noon, it was horses on a highway that caused quite the stir for drivers in ohio. there they go. police say a pair of police horses from the mounted unit escaped the stables and went for freedom. they went for a joy-ride down the busy highway. the show of horsepower was short lived. the pair was rounded up. no one was hurt during the taste of freedom. our next newscast is at 3:00 with liz cook. i will see you
