hamas targets as the exodus of gaza's largest city grows, and now there's word of talks for a humanitarian cease-fire in exchange for hostages. facing off. five gop candidates take swings at each other and their main rival who skipped last night's debate on. an array of topics including the wars overseas and abortion rights. [ chants ] and breaking overnight, they got their hollywood ending. the actors strike is over. the deal that ends their four-month stalemate. good morning, and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. hollywood is back in the business of making movies and tv shows. the union representing actors and major studios reached a tentative agreement. s.a.g.-aftra called for an end to the strike at 12:01 this morning. the celebrations could be heard from coast to coast. shanelle kaul joins us with details on the deal. good morning. >> reporter: good morning,

anne-marie. this was a historic and disruptive strike that shut down production across the industry. the union representing hollywood actors calling this deal a victory. >> we won, baby! [ cheers ] >> reporter: hollywood actors are celebrating being back in business. >> it's been a long, long time coming. >> reporter: s.a.g.-aftra reaching a tentative deal with the major studios last night squashing a contentious nearly four-month-long strike. >> it is a great deal. we voted unanymously to approve -- unanimously to approve it. >> reporter: during the 118 days of picketing, actors pushed for better wages, health care, and pay. but the biggest sticking point -- the use of artificial intelligence. >> they can use your image and your voice and put you into a project that you would not have agreed to. >> reporter: the union says the more than $1 billion three-year contract now includes a.i.

protection and a new bonus paid by streaming services. it comes after days of negotiations on what the studios called their last best and final offer. >> we're celebrating together, having accomplished something that we feel like sets right the ship in this industry in a way that had to happen now. >> reporter: this also follows a recent settlement with hollywood writers who went on strike for 148 days over similar concerns. the twin strikes costing studios more than $6 billion. the priciest in hollywood history. >> we were never going to let go of what we really needed, and we really, you know, met the moment. >> reporter: as for when cameras will roll again -- >> typically outside of thanksgiving and christmas, we're looking at resuming production potentially in january. >> reporter: with awards season fast approaching. exact details from this agreement will not be made public until after board members review the contract on friday. the deal must now be ratified by s.a.g.-aftra membership.

anne-marie? >> shanelle kaul in new york. i know a lot of people are happy about this. thanks a lot. turning now to the israel-hamas war, and we are just learning that talks are under way for the release of more hostages. the "ap" is reporting negotiations would include a three-day humanitarian cease-fire in exchange for about a dozen hostages held by hamas. the israeli army says it now controls northern gaza, destroying 130 hamas tunnels, and killing a weapons maker. and fears of a widening conflict after two american fighter jets strike a weapons warehouse in syria and yemen downs a u.s. drone. doug williams is in tel aviv for us this morning. doug, good morning. >> reporter: anne-marie, good morning. the situation remains dire for any and all remaining civilians in gaza. and even those that are fleeing south face countless risks as israeli forces narrow the forces -- narrow the focus

of their ground invasion in the heart of the city. the conflict widens and deepens for u.s. military forces in the region. israeli defense officials now say hamas has lost control of northern gaza. as ground fighting intensifies along with unrelenting air strikes. explosions near in gaza city hospital sent people running for cover. further north, an air strike leveled a building killing an unknown number of people in a city where thousands remain despite warnings to leave. >> the hospitals have been bombed, stores, refugee centers, churches, mosques. >> reporter: israel says hamas using those sites as shields for its tunnels and rocket launch sites. in addition to the violence, a humanitarian aid agency warns that half a million trapped civilians face death by starvation in gaza. an exodus of thousands of palestinian civilians have fled to the south on foot. more than 80 trucks carrying humanitarian aid crossed into gaza from egypt yesterday, though the crossing into egypt

was closed to foreign nationals for security reasons. >> our expectation is that once that circumstance is resolved the crossing will be open. >> reporter: also yesterday two u.s. military fighter jets conducted a set of strikes on an iran-linked military storage facility in syria. >> we will not hesitate to take further necessary measures to protect our people. >> reporter: meanwhile, a defense official confirms that houthi militants in yemen shot down a u.s. military drone over international waters. dozens of american troops have been injured with more than 49 attacks on u.s. forces in iraq and syria since the israel and hamas conflict began. and the idf continues their efforts to simultaneously supervise the transport of civilians south in gaza while also operating in the depths of gaza city. an idf spokesperson telling us last night that 50,000 civilians have fled, and that the corridor will remain open today. anne-marie? >> all right. doug williams in tel aviv. thank you so much.

and coming up on "cbs mornings," john kirby, the national security council's coordinator for strategic communications, will update us on the war and the u.s. retaliation in syria. that's ahead at 7:00. the two wars overseas taking center stage during last night's gop presidential debate. the field narrowed down to five republicans seeking the party's nomination going head to head while trying to knock the frontrunner, who wasn't there, from his perch. cristian benevides reports on the action from miami. >> reporter: five republican candidates vying to overtake former president trump's lead debated each other wednesday night. they focused on israel's effort to crush hamas after the october 7th terror attack. >> i would be telling bb finish the job once and for all from these butchers hamas. >> i would tell him to smoke those terrorists on his southern border. >> reporter: and russia's war on ukraine -- >> here is a freedom-loving,

pro-american country that is fighting for its survival and its democracy. >> reporter: they took on the abortion issue after ohio voters approved an amendment to enshrine the right to abortion in the state's constitution. >> we need a 15-week federal limit, three out of four americans agree with a 15-week limit. >> reporter: and they tackled the economy. >> this country is in trouble. the elites who put us here, they don't care about you. they don't care that you're having to grapple with higher grocery prices or higher gas prices. >> reporter: the republican hopefuls slammed president biden's first term in the white house. >> what we don't need is biden falling all over himself to get back in the iran deal. >> reporter: just a few miles from the debate, former president donald trump held a campaign rally. but his name came up several times during the night. >> anybody who's going to be spending the next year and a half of their life focusing on keeping themselves out of jail and courtrooms cannot lead this

party or this country. >> reporter: the republican nomination process kicks into high gear in january with the iowa caucuses. cristian benevides, cbs news, miami. ivanka trump took the witness stand in the new york civil fraud trial against her family and their company. former president donald trump's daughter served as executive vice president in the trump organization. she repeatedly said "i don't recall" and insisted she had no role in her father's financial statements. trump and his sons testified earlier. they deny any wrongdoing. ivanka trump is not a defendant in the case. house republicans escalated their impeachment inquiry into -- rather issuing subpoenas from testimony from hunter and his brother james. the house oversight committee claims there's evidence that biden family members set up shell companies to hide money overseas. the republicans have so far failed to uncover evidence,

police arrested a suspect in the deadly stabbing of a synagogue leader. the body of samantha woll was found outside her home last month hours after she returned from a wedding. authorities have said that there's no evidence the attack was motivated by anti-semitism. the suspect's name was not discatholic diocesed and there's no -- disclosed and there's flow word on a motive. "the tennessean" said a student was shot in the head by a stray bullet in nashville. 18-year-old jillian ludwig was walking around a track in a park tuesday when she was shot and critically wounded. police arrested 29-year-old shaquille taylor. he's been charged with aggravated assault and evidence tampering. investigators say taylor was shooting at a car when a bullet struck ludwig. a prayer vigil was held yesterday in tribute to the student. and "the boston herald" says brothels catering to wealthy clients were busted in massachusetts and virginia. federal prosecutors say
