we're learning more about the gunman who killed 18 people and injured 13 others in lewiston, maine. new documents reveal the local sheriff's office was asked to check on him just weeks before the attacks. investigators say this
5:42 pm
was after a fellow national guardsman expressed concerns over his mental health. at the time the gunman was still a u.s. army reservist and had reportedly refused to get help. documents also revealed back in may the gunman's family also alerted deputies about the shooter's deteriorating mental health while he had access to guns. one survivor is speaking out after last week's he deadly shooting. alan nickerson jr. says he is recovering physically but will take longer to recover emotionally. he opened up sharing the moment he was shot and making sure his friends were alive after the shooter went on a rampage. >> i'm hollering for joe because now i can hear people's voices. okay. richard's alive. i hear another voice. larry's alive and i yell. joe don't answer. when i didn't hear his name yelling back at me, i knew

5:49 pm
salesforce tower, temperatures topping out in the 70s, even half moon bay up to 74 degrees, 78 in santa rosa. later tonight well after the trick-or-treaters are back inside temperatures drop to the 40s as we begin the day wednesday and then another nice warm-up. by wednesday afternoon, generally speaking about 4 to 8 degrees above average, up to around 80 degrees in santa rosa. you fell a little bit shy of that today, hit the mid-70s, though. temperatures hit mid- to upper 70s inland in the east bay, upper 70s fremont and redwood city, upper 60s along the coast and half moon bay. some of the warmer spots will approach, maybe exceed 80 degrees, mostly upper 70s for the inland locations in the north bay. let's look at what's in store for us farther down the line, increasing rain chances heading into the weekend. have two long range forecast models side by side,
5:50 pm
the american and european model, and they're in a little better agreement but still are having trouble on when the best chance of rain heads our way. the best chance stays to our north thursday and likely avoiding us friday and then the differences start to appear. the american forecast model is much more optimistic in terms of bringing widespread rain friday night into saturday. the european model is not entirely dry, but more hit or miss. we will see showers take a bit of a break sunday afternoon. we can't guarantee it's going to be dry on sunday. be flexible with any outdoor plans. more differences, the american model tries to bring more shower activity monday. it depends how far south that system wants to go. it will determine how wet our weather will be. dry we look at more than two forecast models. we write what we call ensembles with those two
5:51 pm
forecast models run dozens of times with slightly different conditions and take the average. what we're looking at in general is around a 1/4 inch of rain for most locations, better chances in the north bay. let's look at the seven-day forecast which does include a cooldown, most noticeable over the weekend into early next week. we're only talking about temperatures maybe a couple degrees below average even with the good rain chances friday night into saturday and more intermittent scattered activity the second half of the weekend sunday. that's the case across the bay area. the farther north you go, the more widespread the rain will be, the heavier the rainfall rates will be, add up a bit more, but everybody has a decent chance for the first weekend in november. i wouldn't cancel anything outdoors just yet. have an indoor alternative in mind for anything you have outdoors in the works. >> thanks, paul. time for a check of what's ahead at 6:00, we switch over
5:52 pm
to juliette goodrich. >> coming up at 6:00, it's another costly blow for a family-owned business in oakland. thieves rammed the gas station's garage the second time in a week and the owners are asking what is it going to take to get city leaders to pay attention? plus, it's the end of the road for a controversial experiment on the richmond-san rafael bridge, the push for a compromise that works for both cyclists and cars. let's head to vern and a look at sports. >> we've got the 49ers up top and so much for a quiet week off. san francisco made a deal before tuesday's trade deadline to acquire commanders pass rusher chase young, the rookie of the year in 2020. he's already the team leader in sacks with five. he'll line up on the opposite side of nick bosa, his college teammate at ohio state. the 49ers pass rush can use a jolt. they're currently 18th in sacks. young's new teammates are enjoying their bye week and who
5:53 pm
knows? maybe some of them will do a little trick-or-treating tonight in their favorite costumes. >> best halloween costume, i think i was a dinosaur one year when i was little. that's probably the only thing i can remember. >> when i was a kid, my favorite costume was either batman or the grim reaper. i really enjoyed those. recently i got to do a full body master chief costume from halo. last year me and my wife went as spider-man and the spider verse. she was spider gwyn. >> me and my buddy went as harry and lloyd one time from "dumb and dumber." that's probably my favorite one. >> reporter: you'll need to produce receipts with that. >> i'm blonde, so i was harry. >> i told vern i'd take it from here because the bulk of my work happens later tonight. i've got time to tell you that the warriors have a superhero
5:54 pm
of their own. steph curry delivered another super performance monday night in new orleans. he dropped 42 points in 30 minutes. it's the second 40 point game of the season already. the warriors have won all three all on the road. i'm not sure about giannis antetokounmpo's costume, but i respect the man he's honoring, even if he's a marvel guy. he did his press conference as the hulk. he went all 13 minutes dressed like that. now for citizens watching, i want you to be safe out there. a lot of kids will be out there trick-or-treating. so if you need me, send the bat signal. i'll be watching. especially you, ryan yamamoto. >> he knows you're up to no good. >> little joker here. >> i'd like to see you and
