service members in afghanistan. the 2021 suicide bombing at the kabul airport marked a dark day for the biden administration. overnight we learned the mastermind behind it was killed by the taliban. jarred hill is in new york to explain how it all happened. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. so the pentagon is saying that the talinedn theyen thea favor. almost two years since the deadly blast that killed 13 american troops at kabul's international airport the u.s. has confirmed that the isis mastermind behind the attack was killed by the taliban. u.s. marine staff sergeant taylor hoover was one of the 13. his father, darin hoover, said he was told yesterday of the isis leader's death. >> nothing's going to bring taylor back. we understand that. we get that. he set his legacy, and nothing's going to take that away.

>> reporter: the u.s. is not releasing the name of the mastermind, and pentagon officials say the u.s. was not involved in the taliban operation that took him out. >> i don't care who it was that killed him. it's one less terrorist that we have to worry about. >> reporter: the august, 2021, suicide bombing happened near abbey gate during the final chaotic days during the u.s. drawdown from afghanistan. more than 100 afghan civilians were also killed. marine corps sergeant tyler roper sergeant tyler vargas-andrews survived. >> i'm thrown to the ground. i open my eyes to marines dead or unconscious around me. >> reporter: u.s. officials learned of the isis leader's death weeks ago, although not from the taliban. instead, officials made the decision from their own intelligence gathering. now a senior administration told cbs news that it type of thing might have ordinarily been kept quiet but they felt it was important to tell the families of those killed to provide a little closure. >> thank you.

president biden's campaign for re-election is officially under way. he made the announcement yesterday in a three-minute video that sets up a possible rematch between mr. biden and former president donald trump. nicole d'antonio has more. let's finish this job. i know we can. >> reporter: president biden got to work soon after announcing his bid for a second term. >> four more years! >> reporter: courting union workers in washington, d.c. >> union workers are going to transform america, and union workers are going to finish the job. >> reporter: in his remarks, the president launched a veiled attack on one of his potential republican opponents in 2024 -- former president donald trump. >> the threat that maga republicans pose is to take us to a place we've never been, and where the last guy tried to take us -- >> reporter: trump fired back tuesday. >> you could take the five worst presidents in american history and put them together, and they would not have done the damage

the former two-term governor and congressman has been an outspoken critic of former president donald trump. and washington state now has some of the toughest gun-control laws in the nations. democratic governor jay inslee signed several bills including one that bans the sale of dozens of types of rifles including ar-15-i'll ask weapons. a gun rights group immediately filed a challenge to the ban. >> i don't think that it will pass the smell test with the second amendment. >> their only purpose is to kill humans as rapidly as possible in large numbers. >> another new law requires a ten-day waiting period to buy a gun. chief justice john roberts has turned down a request to testify before the senate judiciary committee. roberts received the invitation from democratic committee chairman dick durbin to appear next week during a hearing on ethics standards at the supreme court.oferts provhe pan with a

statement of ethics signed by all nine justices. the invitation came after news reports of a close relationship between justice clarence thomas and billionaire conservative donor harlan crow. reaction continues to pour in after the death of harry belafonte. the legendary actor, singer, and civil rights activist died yesterday in new york at his home at the age of 96. the reverend al sharpton tweeted, "he was a history-changing activist. a culture-changing entertainer, and an unmatched intellectual." oprah winfrey posted this on instagram, "thank you for your music, your artistry, your activism, your fight for civil rights and justice." vlad duthiers looks back at belefonte's storied life and career. ♪ >> reporter: affectionately known as the king of calypso, harry belafonte sparked a craze for caribbean music to worldwide audiences. ♪aylight come mme ♪

his 1956 album featuring hits like the "banana boat song" became the first to sell more than a million copies. born in harlem in 1927, the son of immigrants, belefonte dropped out of school and joined the navy. ♪ his passion was entertaining. his success as a singer led to roles in hollywood. handsome and charismatic he soon became the first black actor to gain success as a leading man. during the civil rights movement, he used his voice, money, and celebrity for social justice. he became a confidante to dr. martin luther king jr. >> i saw it as far more than just to delight audiences and people can dance and sing. >> reporter: we sat down with him in 2018. it strikes me that you were all willing to risk everything for your beliefs.

war memorial in washington along with south korean president yoon suk yeol and his wife. last night's event was part of the south korean president's six-day visit to the u.s. the two leaders will hold formal talks at the white house today. they will also be an -- there will also be an official state dinner tonight. britain's prince william was paid a large sum of money in at today on a montana lawmaker. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." the "associated press" reports a montana transgender lawmaker faces a disciplinary vote in the state house today. [ chants ] >> on monday seven demonstrators were arrested for disrupting proceedings in the house. they were demanding that democratic representative zooey zephyr be allowed to speak on a bill. republicans had refused to let her talk since her comments last week when she said that those who voted to ban gender-affirming care for young people would have, quote, blood on their hands.

they want her to apologize. zephyr says she was told that she will be given a chance to speak today. npr says court papers show prince william received a, quote, very large sum of money in a phone hacking settlement with rupert murdoch's british newspaper. the documents revealing the 2020 payments were made public as part of a lawsuit filed by prince harry. harry claims employees of murdoch's newspapers hacked into the phones of royal family members and illegally gathered information for two decades. and "the washington post" says former new zealand prime minister jacinda ardern will temporarily be joining harvard university. ardern has been appointed to you doa philadelphia police at harvard school of public policy and government starting in the fall. earlier this year she made the surprise announcement that she was stepping down as prime minister after more than five years. she says that she plans to return to new zealand after the fellowships. still to come, cover girl. we'll show you the "gilmore

tuesday as investors assessed earnings reports from big tech. the dow lost 344 points. the nasdaq was down 238, and the s&p 500 lost 65 points. general motors is scrapping its most popular electric car. production of the chevy bolt will grind to a halt this year with the company saying it plans to instead focus on evs with a newer battery. the bolt was gm's top-selling electric vehicle last year and one of the most affordable evs in the country. bad bath & beyond won't accept store coupons anymore starting today. the home goods chain filed for bankruptcy on sunday and plans to kick off store closing sales today. the company is now winding down business and looking for a buyer. and mattel is launching the first-ever barbie with down syndrome. the doll is dressed in yellow and blue, colors associated with down syndrome awareness, and comes with ankle foot orthotics which many children with down syndrome use for support.

first round nba playoff series. game six is thursday in atlanta. singer and songwriter ed sheeran was on the witness stand in a new york city courtroom. sheeran is accused of stealing from the marvin gaye classic "let's get it on" for "thinking out loud." lawyers for the heirs of ed townsend, the co-writer on the classic, played a clip of a mash-up of the songs at a concert. sheeran told the court that the songs are in the same key and that he'd have to be an idiot to stand in front of 20,000 people and do that if he had copied the song. carrie fisher is getting her star on the hollywood walk of fame. the late actor who played princess leia in the "star wars" franchise will be honored on may 4th, also known as "star wars" day. fisher died suddenly in 2016. her daughter billie lourde will accept the honor on her behalf. fisher's co-star mark hamill
