in. you see the clouds on our san francisco camera this morning. that's all indicating westerly wind flow, ocean breeze. we are looking at temperatures that are generally in the low to mid 50s concord, oakland, livermore, san jose. 40 degrees for santa rosa. the afternoon, a mild day inland, 76 san jose, 78 concord, 82 antioch. around the bay, cooler. upper 50s to low to mid 60s and along the coast in the mid to upper 50s. we will cool down more as we look to tomorrow. let's check with gianna. how is the commute across the bay bridge this morning? if you are headed west bound working out of the east bay into the city, it is not too bad. no metering lights yet. so far it is safe to say it is friday light for your commute. we are getting reports of debris in the road way as you work on the lower deck of the bay bridge. if you are headed say in the east bound direction trying to come out of the city into the

east bay, there are reports of ladders in the road way and some debris. hopefully they'll clear that up. it is mostly blocking the right lane. it is friday light. that's good news. if you are up early taking freeways you shouldn't have many trouble spots. toward the altamont pass, a little slow as you work towards north flynn. >> thank you. u.s. drought monitor re vealingly the entire bay area is in extreme drought. experts say we should not panic but we should be worried. kiet do is live with more. >> reporter: we are coming off the second dry winter in a row and that's caught attention of we are in the santa clara valley water district where the board of directors voted to continue 20% voluntary reduction compared to the use of 2013. however around the bay area

other agencies are going further. tomorrow ebamuwill begin asking all of its customers to voluntarily cut back usage by 10%. the agency says they do not have enough water to make it through the year and must purchase water from outside the district. east bay mud says voluntary water conservation is the first step. >> what might happen is mandatory conservation for example instead of voluntary or we may institute drought sure charges. >> try not to think about it. >> i am in denial. i have lived . >> hges but i thinwe will be rapecily in zone >> noe time that we have to deal with this. >> reporter: here is a round up of the latest water restrictions earlier this week. sonoma adopted resolution proclaiming drought emergency. that's on top of the governor's proclamation of state of emergency in sonoma county. san francisco public utilities

was able to walk away from the crash. developing in contra costa, police in pittsburg looking for a shooter who opened fire on a driver. it happened around 9:00 last night along the highway 4 railroad avenue off ramp. the driver was hit in the neck and crashed into a double tanker truck. amazingly the driver's injuries are not considered life threatening but the driver was taken to the hospital, no word on suspects in the case. a man is in the hospital after a shooting in san jose just before midnight. the man is in critical condition right now. no details on a suspect nor motive. san jose police have made arrest in a series of purse snatching robberies in the south and east bay. this man 23-year-old ramsey was arrested in oak land in connection to the crimes. there is another suspect still out there. the videos show how the crimes were carefully orchestrated by

a pair of suspects. crimes typically happen in parking lots. one suspect will block in the victim while another jumps in their car and grabs their purse or other personal items. >> these crimes are very quick, very fast. the shopping centers are known to have banks, known to have expensive stores. often victims are known to carry expensive purses or perhaps pull out cash from atm or bank and really the crime of opportunity was there. >> police are still searching for a second suspect in all nine cases in san jose, victims have been asian women. police believe the suspects maybe behind 30 more cases in the east bay. today, the 28-year-old man suspected of murdering a woman and covering it up with a fire will be arraigned in court. priscilla castro disappeared last august. she was last known to be visiting vacaville for a date

with victor serrentino. police say he killed her and lit a fire to cover it up. a live look outside at san francisco, the county is expecting to slide into the state's most lenient tier of reopening tuesday, yellow tier allows for expanded capacity of indoor and outdoor activities. san francisco's covid command center expects the city's changes will take effect friday, may 7, if the yellow tier move it announced next tuesday. marin county could see similar changes. university of the pacific has announced a plan to begin vaccinating students and staff, one of the first in the state to do so. anybody enrolled in one of the three campuses as well as surrounding communities are welcome to come and get a shot. a school district is recommending an elementary

school be closed triggering accusations of racial bias. an advisory panel voted 7-4 after a tense five hour meeting. parents rallied tuesday ahead of the vote to stop the closure. the school has the highest percentage of asian american students in marin. huge night for bay area football fans after weeks of suspense. the wait is over. the 49ers got their new quarterback. niners took north dakota state's tre lance. it was a surprise since the 49ers traded from the 12th to the 3rd pick. it was thought they would take the alabama qb matt jones who new england ended up taking at 15. shanahan and lynch kept everybody in the dark including lance hill self. >> it was pretty emotional for me right away. just kind of a surreal feeling and obviously not knowing what the situation would be going in. >> you never know with the league.

if the whole nfl is assuming you are doing one thing and you are not, we are not going to work hard to correct that. so let that be. >> what an inspiring journey for harris after spending time in an east bay homeless shelter as a child. the former alabama star was in emeryville last night as his dream came true. he was selected 24th overall by the steelers. he was leading rusher in bay area prep history. it was a moment years in the making. his journey to the nfl wasn't an easy one. harris lived with his mother and four siblings in this tiny room at a homeless shelter in richmond. on the day he was drafted he returned to his roots treating everyone at the shelter to a draft party full of food and goodies. harris says he is forming a nonprofit and hopes to keep giving back to the

a brand new state of the art childcare facility in red wood city. there is a problem. she can't staff it. >> i thought there would be a lot of people looking for wo and i was surprised to find out there really is not. >> reporter: there are still 1.5 million people in california out of work because of the pandemic but many who are working lower wage jobs aren't ready to come back. for some it is not worth taking the risk when unemployment lasts through september. >> the childcare field is not a high paying field. also many people have moved from the bay area or recareered during the pandemic and some have chosen to stay on unemployment. >> reporter: according to edd data, californians were hit harder by unemployment than the rest of the country. in april last year 16% of californians were unemployed compared to u.s. high of 14.7%. nationwide, unemployment dropped to 6%. in california, it's still 8.2. the bay area is seeing some jobs come back. most counties hover near 6%.

>> we are at a moment where employers are eager to hire and many job seekers are still holding back. >> reporter: the chief economist at indeed says a number of factors can slow the jobs recovery for the bay area. high cost of living gave workers reason to relocate. there is a bit of a chicken and egg scenario in downtowns. businesses want to reopen and hire but if white collar workers continue to stay home it won't pencil out. >> there are businesses that depend on people going to the office, downtown restaurants, other local services that depend on office woa great time to be looking for work, hardest hit industries may take longer to recover. >> there were so many layoffs and changes that a lot of the employers are trying to catch

up. >> reporter: many parents, moms in particular, quit working to take on childcare and won't be back to job searching for months. >> right now is probably a moment that is more favorable for job seekers than we have seen in a while and there might be more job seekers after summer as kids go back to school. >> this is your chance to take all the knowledge that you have about what you would love in your new job, what you are good at, what you don't want in your new job. >> reporter: a talent agent and author of career choreography, he is hoping to help inspire people who lost work this past year. his advice, get back to the basics. don't underestimate power of your contact list. >> networking is really effective and a particle in motion attracts other particles in motion. be in motion. >> reporter: he says the pandemic presents unique opportunity for job searchers to reinvent themselves. >> make sure you are able to

you just have to do it. >> reporter: economists say the lower unemployment rate in places like san francisco where it is 5.4% compared to 6% around the country isn't necessarily painting the full picture. it isn't necessarily saying that people who lost work got it back. a lot of people dropped out of the workforce or moved. the talent agent in the story works with members of the kpix family. cal trans will begin instruction on the gill man interchange project. it will be a big improvement for anyone traveling in that area. it certainly will. a lot of commuters near and around the interchange know all too well how bad traffic can get. to change. ws phase one of construction will start with a new pedestrian bridge that will connect to the bay trail. i spoke the with the executive

director of the alameda county transportation commission about how this will greatly improve area near i-80 not just for cars but cyclists and pedestrians. >> right now, it is a high stress area for any cyclist and walkers. this will really, really eliminate a gap for our bicycle and pedestrian users. >> completion of the project is expected by summer of 2023 but in the meantime, cal trans will have detours in place along gill man street between west frontage road and 5th street near i-80. expect overnight closures to the on and off ramps in and around the area. to learn more about the project and see my interview, head to kpix.com. after these next years, it will be better trying to travel through there. speaking of 80 and east shore freeway, let's check your travel times. so far it's an easy ride if you

are taking west bound 80 highway 4 to the maze, a 14 minute commute. we are seeing green on our roads which is good news if you are getting ready to head out the door. 27 minutes from 205 to 680. you will find brake lights if you are headed west bound as you approach that 580, 205 connector. a pocket of slowing near north flynn. other than that traffic is moving nice towards 680. it looks like we've got a stalled vehicle. you can see it in one of the lanes before the pay gates. traffic is still moving at the limit, not a lot of cars on the road way. hopefully crews will get that vehicle out of the way. it is just before the toll plaza. we'll keep an eye on that. no metering list evything is r to thblsp in regatoon the lower deck of the bridge has been completely clear. sunol grade, 84 both directions open after overnight cal trans construction through there, everything is clear.

around longer along the coast and around the bay. tomorrow morning we could even see spotty drizzle to start our day with the stronger marine influence for us and again temperatures will be even cooler for your saturday. talking about our drought that was just released in the newest and latest drought information. most of the bay area is in red under extreme drought. a severe drought in orange. a big concern for us as we look to our summer and wildfire season. it was a very dry winter and spring for us, just 37 to 40% of average for our water year, rainfall verses average. our sierra snowpack, we are at 26% of average for the sierra for our snowpack there. let's check our daytime highs for south bay looking at mid 70s for santa clara, san jose 80 degrees, morgan hill, the south bay. mild inland, upper 70s for concord as well as for pleasant

have this. some bay area residents are preparing to cut back on water usage this weekend due to the extreme drought. kiet do has more on that from los gatos. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. we are live at lexington reservoir in los gatos taking a look at the past month and what water agencies are doing in response to the looming drought. we are in the santa clara valley water district where the board of directors voted to continue voluntary 20% reduction in water use. that's compared to water use in 2013. other agencies are going a bit further. tomorrow east bay mud will begin asking customers to voluntarily cut usage by 10%. east bay mud does not have enough water to make it through the year and must purchase water from outside the district. most agencies have reserves for a year or two at most and uc davis center for watershed science says as we come off a

be extra careful especially if in a high profile vehicle. no delays, travel times look good. we've got brake lights north bound 101. this is as you commute into morgan hill. it looks like a couple cars tangled up. no lanes are blocked but there is activity in the center divide which is what's causing the back up. it's still getting slow as you drive through the altamont pass. >> thank you. to our coronavirus coverage, vaccine hesitancy is proving to be a challenge among younger people. a cnn poll released yesterday found 31% of adults under age 35 do not plan on getting vaccinated. the reasons are varied. >> what's in it for me? what's the purpose of getting vaccinated if nothing changes? >> people when they hear, it's emergency use, they have concern. >> health experts say getting covid-19 under control means getting herd immunityup to at least 70% of the population.

right now it is 30%. >> as that happens re people are getting vaccinated because they're talking to other people that have been vaccinated and it worked out well. >> health experts are warning the longterm effects of getting covid could be quite serious. latest financial results for astrazeneca have been released. it sold $270 million worth of vaccines in the first quarter. that's around 68 million doses worldwide. the majority of the sales were in europe. a live look at the state capitol, governor newsom signed legislation that will provide $6.2 billion tax cut for small businesses struggling during the pandemic. this is on top of two and a half billion dollars in grants already distributed to small businesses. under legislation eligible businesses won't have to start paying state taxes on ppp loans they received from the federal government either. the governor says the relief will position the state for a

the time is 5:44. an alameda supervisor launching effort to ban nonrefill able single use plastic bottles across the state. the push is through a group founded, he wants to ban plastic bottles typically used for water or beverages like soda. he says aluminum is a more sustainable material because it can be recycled up to 24 times. >> we need to get away from the throw away mentality one time use. we need to change our culture. our children are the ones that are going to have to pay the consequences. that pile behind me is one day's worth of plastic and this is only one space. imagine how much of that is

shape despite several brushes with danger. so glad she's okay, gianna. what a rescue. >> i know. thank god they got her out. hopefully she's not going to do anything like this again. taking a look at the roadways. north bound 101, brake lights building into morgan hill. a couple cars are tangled up. you can see we are seeing a lot of red already for the trouble spot. two accidents popping up in the area. this is north bound 101 around dunn avenue. this is into morgan hill. not too friday light as you head thr. taabout 45 minutes for tow crews to be on scene. expect the brake lights for a bit longer. once you are past that, rest of the way through south bay, san jose, everything looks pretty good. traffic is getting busier though for the ride into the altamont pass. we are starting to see the brake lights forming out of

tracy near mount house extending to the 580, 205 connector and a bit beyond north flynn. speeds are down to about 23 miles per hour in some spots. it is crawling along as you head through, no delays at the dublin interchange. your travel time is in the yellow. the rest of our major freeways are quiet. 80 is clear. 101 as you head out of san jose along the peninsula looks good. if you are traveling between east bay towards 101 across the bay, traffic is at the limit for the most part. at the san mateo bridge you see traffic west bound, a little bit extra volume. it looks liokdown theight side as you head through. the earlier stall at the bay bridge is all clear. let's look at your weekend forecast. it is 5:47. happy friday. we will cool it down a bit for today with the ocean breeze kicking in. a live look with our treasure
