york city, i'm tom hanson. it's thursday, august 15th, 2019, this is the cbs morning news. shoot out in philadelphia. six police officers are wounded after a more than 7 hour standoff with an armed suspect. recession fears prompt a massive sell off on wall street that's effecting markets around the world. >> whoa, oh my goodness. no, no, no. >> and a high speed pursuit ends in a violent crash in los angeles. good morning from the studio

57 newsroom at cbs news headquaters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne marie green. from overnight in philadelphia a violent police standoff has ended with six officers wounded and the suspected gunman in custody. the standoff started yesterday afternoon when officers were serving a warrant at a home. the shooter apparently started firing at the officers. tom hansen is in philadelphia. what do we know now about the condition of those officers? >> hey, well, the six officers shot are all out of the hospital this morning. they all sustained nonlife threatening injuries and are expected to be okay. meanwhile, the investigation into just what happened yesterday afternoon is getting started. the man that police sasay shot x officers during a lengthy un midnight. the suspect was held up in a north philadelphia building.

>> shots fired. >> around 4:30 in the afternoon police went to the home to serve a drug warrant. officials said the operation went arye almost immediately. >> shooter fired multiple rounds. officers returned fire. many of whom had to escape through windows and doors to get from a barrage of bullets. >> two officers and three other people were trapped inside until an officer could free them. >> it's nothing short of a miracle that we don't have multiple officers killed today. >> he barricaded himself inside and was firing multiple rounds outside of his window. >> little having all of that weaponry and all hat fire power. >> these women and young girls were in their second floor apartment when the shooting

started. >> don't say nothing bad about them. they kept us safe the whole time. >> all six officers shot were released from the hospital. two walked out as their colleagues saluted. an attorney says his former client 36-year-old maurice hill is the suspect. he was not injured during the standoff. and according to the philadelphia inquirer, maurice hill has a long history of gun related convictions and attempts at evading arrests. tom hansen in philadelphia, thank you so much, tom. now to the economy and new fears of a possible recession. for the first time since the 2007 financial crisis, the ten year treasury yield dipped below the 2-year rate. the move known as a yield curve inversion has preceded every recession since the 1970s. that hadnvumng stock. this morning, asian markets were mixed after stocks on wall street plunged. tokyo's lost. yesterday the dow plummeted 800 points. the s&p 500 lost 85 points and

the nasdaq dropped 242 points. so how are economists reacting to all of this news? don reports from wall street. the symbol of wall street may be a steadfast bull but traders reacted like skittish colts. a recession may be around the corner since the dow plunging 800 points. investors are fleeing stocks for safety in bonds. >> the easiest way to understand it is that basically long-term rates, anything that's out there that's more than a year or two years or three years or four years, those rates are now lower than short-term rates. it means you're not willing to place a bet on the future and that's the fear is that this could actually trigger a credit crisis. >> but it doesn't mean a recession is imminent. historically it could take 18 to 24 months to arrive if at all. in this case, a recession could come right around the 2020 election. the other factor influencing the market sell off, a global economic slow down.

china in a trade war with the u.s. reported it's slowest growth figures since 1992. japan's economic growth decreased to 1.8%. germany's economy shrank with exports lagging and europe followed with production plummeting. as the economic expansion cools. this will put action on the federal reserve and chairman jerome powell to cut interest rates. powell has been a target of witherring criticism from president trump over the fed's monetary policies. cbs news new york. democrats and republicans are blasting iowa congressman steve king over comments he made on abortion. king is opposed to all abortions with no exceptions for rape or incest. ed o'keefe reports on king's controversial remarks. >> reporter: speaking in iowa republican congressman steve king defended an anti-abortion bill he has written that would not allow exceptions for rape or

incest. >> what if we went back from all the family trees and just pulled those people out that were products of rape and incest. would there be any population of the world left if we did that? king who has a history of making controversial remarks implied he may have been a product of rape or insist. >> considering all the wars and all the rape and pillage that's taken place happened to culture and society i can't say i'm not a product of that. >> the third ranking house republican liz chenney said king needs to step down and his constituents deserve better. several democratic presidential candidates also said king must go. >> you'd think it would be easy to come out against rape and incest. >> he considered the most anti-immigrant lawmaker in congress republicans have denounced him in the past including when he told the new york times white nationalist, white supremacists, western civilization, how did that language become offensive?

that comment prompted house republicans to strip king of all committee assignments. he said he would not re-sign. to expel him from the house would require the backing of 2-thirds of his fellow members. >> more than 400 lawsuits have been filed in new york as part of a new child sex abuse law. the child victims act went into effect yesterday. it created a one year period when any adult survivors of alleged child sexual abuse can sue an abuser or institution no matter how long ago the abuse took place. 45 judges have been set aside in new york to deal with the cases. the idea behind the law is that many victims of sexual abuse keep it a secret beyond the previous statute of limitations. because of the n new law a woma that claimed jeffrey epstein raped her when she is a teenager can sue. she filed a civil lawsuit at 12:01 yesterday morning immediately after the law went

into effect. it named his ex-girlfriend and three jane does. maxwell denied any wrong doing and hasn't been charged. >> he didn't do this along. he had people working with him and for him and that enabled his entire operation. >> prosecutors estimated his estate at $500 million. he died of an apparent suicide while being held at a new york city jail. his death is now under investigation. the long time friend of the dayton, ohio gunman is expected back in court today on a firearms charge unrelated to the shooting. the detention hearing will determine whether or not he will remain in jail until his trial. investigators say he bought the body armor and helped assemble a weapon used in the mass shooting.

suspect when the vehicle ran a red light and crashed into two other cars at the intersection. the video shows a woman and her three children running from one of the vehicles. the suspect was arrested and police say the car was stolen earlier in the day at gun point. there were no serious injuries. a couple that met at woodstock five years ago made an amazing discovery and talks break down for the u.s. women's soccer team. the wall street journal reports mediation talks between the u.s. women's soccer team and the u.s. soccer federation over equal pay ended without an agreement. in march the team sued the federation for alleged unequal pay and treatment compared to the men's team. last month you may remember the women's team won it's second consecutive world cup. the case could go to trial next year. the new york times says scientists have discovered a new

cure for the deadliest strain of tuberculosis. they approved a new medicine for use with two other antibiotics. it cured about 90% of patients with very drug resistant tb. it's the world's leading infectious cause of death. the treatment needs approval from the world health organization, though. cbs san francisco station kpix says the california department of transportation is using a high-tech lane striping machine. the equipment sprays a special thermo plastic material. it's easier to see for humans and remote sensors. >> the stripes are wider and they're wider and they also help guide those autonomous vehicles.

your next flight. diane king hall is at the new york stock exchange with that and more. good morning. >> good morning, on the economic calendar they'll release data for july. it includes the world's biggest retailer including walmart, nvidia, alibaba and jcpenney and tapestry. ford is recalling cars in the u.s. it is to fix the problem that could stop seatbelts from holding people in a crash. there are reports of at least one injury from the problem. ford is also extending warranties on 560,000 small cars. the company has faced several lawsuits and complaints about six speed automatic transmissions. the move covers 2014 through 2016 model focuses built from november of 2015 as well as 2014. meantime, federal prosecutors say a woman charged in that massive data breach at capital one appears to have hacked more than 30 other organizations. she was arrested last month after the fbi said she obtained personal information from more

than 100 million capital one prosutors said servers found in thompson's home contained data stolen from more than 30 other companies, educational institutions and other entities. investigators are still working to identify the effected organizations. and controversial facial recognition technology, recognition can now detect fear. it recently launched updates to recognition facial analysis features including the addition of fear to its emotion detection. amazon also says recognition software can track and analyze people in photos usite sing co misused posing a threat to minority communities. miniature horses are among the service animals approved to take on planes.
