this is the "cbs morning news" for friday, november 5th, 2010. that chilean miner had quite the moves. good morning, everybody. thanks for joining us. i'm betty nguyen. this morning the cuban government says there are no survivors after the crash of an airliner with 68 on board. aerocaribbean flight 883 en route from eastern cuba to the capital, havana, thursday, when the pilot declared an emergency. the twin-engine turbo prop crashed in a remote mountainous area about 220 miles east of havana. 28 of the passengers were foreigners, none american. the plane, an atr-72, like this one, was owned by the cuban national airline and is in service around the world. the cause of the crash is being investigated. in pakistan this morning a private plane crashed near karachi. all 21 people on board were killed. the plane had just taken off when the pilot radioed he was

having engine trouble. he tried to return to the airport, but did not make it. the indonesian volcano mount merapi erupted again today killing at least 54 people. the worst single-day death toll in 80 years. a cloud of ash and gas raced through the mountainside and into villages. villagers tried to escape but many suffered severe burns. the death toll from the past week's eruptions has now topped 100. tropical storm tomas is hitting haiti with strong winds and drenching rain. the center of the storm will pass near western haiti this morning. the storm has sustained winds of 65 miles per hour and is strengthening. many residents still living in tent camps since january's earthquake have ignored warnings to move into more weather-resistant structures like schools or into friends' homes. a dangerous storm surge is expected along with 10 inches of rain. tomas could become a hurricane later today. qantas officials say their

fleet of a-380 jumbo jets could be back in the sky within days. qantas grounded its six jumbo jets thursday after an engine failure forced a flight from singapore to make an emergency landing. qantas is working with the manufacturer to perform safety checks. >> we believe this is probably most likely a material failure or some sort of design issue that we're tracking, trying to understand. we don't believe this is related to maintenance in any way. >> the a-380 is the world's largest passenger jet. 459 people were on board thursday's flight. none was injured. this morning the labor department releases october's unemployment numbers and the news is not expected to be good. this comes one day after the dow jones industrials finished at their highest level in more than two years. preeti arla is in washington with more on this. good morning, preeti. >> good morning, betty. we'll see how the markets react when numbers come out later today. economists expect they'll show unemployment is high and hiring is weak.

it is news millions of unemployed americans don't want to hear. cliff hayes's full-time job doesn't pay a cent. >> you never think that -- that something like this would happen. >> reporter: ever since he lost his telecommunications job two years ago he spends his days hitting the phone and computer looking for permanent work but today's jobs report isn't expected to help. analysts predict employers added just 60,000 positions last month. unemployment is projected to remain at 9.6%. >> you kind of get to a point where you say, wow, i mean, when is this -- you know, when is this going to change? >> reporter: there are some signs the economy is improving. stocks surged thursday as wall street embraced the federal reserve's plan to pump $600 billion into the economy. the dow soared to its highest point in more than two years. since new members of congress don't take office until january, current lawmakers will have to try to energize the economy in a

so-called lame duck session later this month. high on the agenda extending the bush-era tax cuts, which expire at the end of the year. >> we'll work hard to make sure democrats don't raise taxes on anybody. >> reporter: republicans are determined to keep the cuts in place for all americans. while president obama would prefer to let the cuts for the wealthy expire, he's open to compromise. >> we're certainly open to listening to their position. >> reporter: if congress does nothing before the new year, taxes go up for everybody. and the president will give his take on the numbers later this morning. he'll be making a statement at the white house just after 9:00. betty? >> preeti in washington, joining us live, thank you. >> this morning president obama leaves on a ten-day visit to asia, his longest foreign trip since he took office. he'll stop in india, indonesia, south korea and japan. his central goal is to improve free trade. the president's trip was planned before tuesday's

election results. mr. obama reflected on the drubbing democrats were handed during an exclusive interview with "60 minutes" correspondent steve kroft. >> people make the argument you lost control of the narrative and let other people define you, you haven't sold your successes well enough. >> i think it's a fair argument. you know, i think that over the course of two years, we were so busy and so focused on getting a bunch of stuff done that we stopped paying attention to the fact that, you know, leadership isn't just legislation. that it's a matter of persuading people and giving them confidence. and bringing them together. and setting a tone. and making an argument that people can understand.

and i think that we haven't always been successful at that, and i take personal responsibility for that. and it's something that i've got to examine carefully as i go forward. >> you can watch steve kroft's entire interview with the president on this sunday's "60 minutes." this morning, a winner in the washington state senate contest. democrat patty murray has narrowly defeated republican challenger dino rossi to win a fourth term. democrats now control the senate with 53 seats. turning now to health news and a promising development in the fight against lung cancer. a major government study shows a high-tech way of screening for the disease can drastically reduce the death toll. michael her zen berg has more. >> reporter: this 67-year-old believes this device saved her life. the former smoker had a ct scan in 2008 that spotted the earliest signs of lung cancer. >> god gave me a second chance in life. and that's how i look at it.

>> reporter: traditionally doctors use x-rays to screen high-risk lung cancer patients. but a new study finds ct scans are superior at saving lives. >> this is one of the most important cancer findings in the last ten years. >> reporter: researchers split 53,000 former or current smokers into two groups. doctors screened one group with ct scans, the other with x-rays. they found the group with annual ct scans had 20% fewer deaths. lung cancer kills 150,000 americans every year. it's one of the deadliest forms of cancer because symptoms often don't appear until it's too late. studies show ct scans can detect cancer much earlier than x-rays. >> the ability to see tiny lesions as small as only a few millimeters in size is something a chest x-ray just can't do. >> reporter: ct scans do have drawbacks. tests can come back false positive which can lead to unnecessary biopsies. experts say more studies are

the budbus epidemi the bedbug epidemic showing no signs of slowing down. the cost of fighting them has more than doubled topping a quarter a billion dollars. the problem invaded all kinds of businesses. as jim axelrod reports, victims are fed up and fighting back. >> i'm thinking to myself, i can't believe, i can't believe this. i absolutely can't believe it. >> reporter: her bedbug nightmare started after her family stayed at new york's world famous waldorf astoria hotel. her daughter slept on a cot and she says woke up covered in bites. >> the following day, i called up the pediatrician. he said, these are bedbug bites.

>> reporter: like that, he knew? >> he knew immediately. >> reporter: they believe the bedbugs traveled home with them because their house became infested and they had to throw away furniture, clothing and toys. but they weren't embarrassed about having bedbugs. they were furious. >> very angry that i thought that i was going to a safe place and i ended up in this situation. >> reporter: they are suing the hotel for $13,000 of property damage, plus pain and suffering. >> the bedbugs were in a cot. as far as i know, when my client went out that went out, too. >> reporter: the waldorf astoria tells us after they complained they called in an exterminator who inspected the room and found no evidence of bedbugs. today, another family sued the waldorf also blaming their bedbugs on the hotel. >> it wreaked havoc on us. >> reporter: bedbugs have put businesses on edge. this moving company in the bronx takes every precaution to kill these critters, which could

spread among customers. have you actually had potential clients ask you, what are you going to do about bedbugs? >> yes. it's a very big deal. >> reporter: so, in between moves, the crews heat the inside of the trucks to 120 degrees, spray down the dollies and certify their vehicles have been checked by bedbug-sniffing dogs. >> i'm not going to take a chance. >> reporter: the problem, the bugs have become resistant to many pesticides. they can live for a year and up to six months without food, that is, your blood. females can lay hundreds of eggs over their lives. in the war against bedbugs man is out-numbered. >> going to get to warehouses and other trucks and continue in other industries, as well. it is just going to happen. >> reporter: you are scaring me. in the age of bedbugs, businesses are afraid customers will bite back.
