week's pipeline explosion. anne makovec is in san bruno to explain. good morning. >> reporter: overpressurized lines are apparently a major cause of gas line explosion. and that is the cause that if it's true could place major liability on pg&e. and it is one of several aspects the ntsb has been investigating since last thursday. federal investigators visited a terminal in milpitas to check records and investigate employees. there are no results yet but pg&e says it always operated that line below the maximum pressure allowed. and the "mercury news" is reporting that pg&e has yet to comply with a state order to reduce pressure in the pipeline that exploded by 20% and that pg&e is apparently seeking more "clarity" on the issue before it does so.

as the investigation continues, so does the mourning. there was a vigil last night for the mother and daughter killed in the explosion, meantime. people of gathered at saint cecilia catholic church to remember jacqueline grieg and her 13-year-old daughter janessa. the eighth grader was the student body president at saint cecilia school. at the service they played a tape of her speaking at her condition firmmation. >> go ahead and look around. notice the church full of smiling faces. the faces of the people who really do care about us. >> reporter: there is a funeral this morning. >> necessary 15 and her mom jacquelin at the saint cecilia catholic church. coming up at 6:30, we'll hear more of janessa's confirmation speech. words that could ring true to mourners today. sydnie back to you.

>> thank you, anne makovec in san bruno. the number of people killed in the san bruno explosion may rise from four to seven. late last night the family of three missing people released a statement saying their loved ones are dead. three people were inside a home next to the blast site. the family says the remains of two men and one woman were discovered at the house. the coroner is performing dna tests on the remains of greg bullis, his 16-year-old son william and his mother lavonne. san mateo county prosecutors have this message for anyone who tries to profit from this disaster. >> we view them as vermin. >> two women were charged yesterday with attempting to impersonate victims of the blast. this is exclusive video of them in court. investigators say sonia smith and lisa justin were trying to get free food and other assistance. authorities are looking at four more suspected fraudulent applications linked to the explosion. >> we are going to charge them with everything we are can charge them with. we are not going to plea bargain

with them and ask for no leniency. >> investigators want to remind people to watch for identity thieves as well as contractors who may try to take advantage of disaster victims. a man shot by police in concord was wanted for several armed robberies. 25-year-old bryan brownwhite is in critical condition. police chased him in concord early yesterday. they say they shot him when he pointed a weapon at them. they learned later it was a toy gun. brownwhite had outstanding warrants totaling $900,000 for armed robberies in fremont and san jose. >> state officials are promising tougher laws on fire safety following the trace elementary school fire in san jose. flames destroyed the main building, library and dozens of classrooms. state lawmakers say there were no automatic fire sprinklers or alarms because that building was being remodeled. that's a loophole in the law they say needs to be closed.

it appears there are three more victims of the blast up to 7. a family said their loved ones are dead. lavonne bullis, her son greg and grandson william were inside a home next it the blast site. the family says the remains of two men and a woman were discovered at the house. the coroner's performing dna tests on the remains but the results could take several weeks. police say it is the fourth sexual assault at the same walnut creek apartment complex in the past two months. the latest reported assault happened last night inside a unit at the park regency apartments on oak road. a berkeley man is still jailed on charges related to the three other cases at that complex reported since july. dna testing links him to one rape at the complex. that defendant pled not guilty.

it was a toy gun that an armed robbery suspect pointed at police in concord before they shot him early yesterday morning. 25-year-old bryan brownwhite was critly injured when officers opened fire. it was a fake gun. brownwhite is in critical but stable condition. he is suspected in several armed robberies in the east and south bay areas. he had outstanding arrest warrants totaling $900,000. environmentalists are asking ship operators to watch out for whales off the bay area coast after a container ship headed to the port of oakland hit a whale yesterday. no one knew what happened until they reached port and saw the animal on the bow. they are trying to determine if it was dead when the ship hit it. bay to breakers is working to change its party reputation. organizers of the race say alcohol and floats will be banned from the race this year, participants being encouraged to register but the number of people allowed to sign up will

modern fire safety systems like smoke detectors, like fire sprinklers, because it was a locally funded project. that's the loop home. yesterday here in san jose, some lawmakers gathered from sacramento and talked to school officials and basically said, look, we need to close this loophole in the name of fire safety at schools. vincent matthews, the superintendent of san jose unified says they are forming a task force to look at fire safety throughout the school community. >> we want to, you know, figure out as we move forward exactly what's going to be best for the students and facilities and so we are going to be asking the hard questions, asking ourselves the tough and difficult questions but we want to do what's best and that's our foremost safety for us is the students and the community. >> reporter: the trace fire is still an open arson investigation. just this week, school officials added another $5,000 to the existing $10,000 reward so now the reward for information leading to the person who started this fire is now $15,000. that's for the identification, arrest and conviction of the

our time now 6:41. well, the question in new york this morning, was it a tornado? >> that's what everyone is asking. the national weather service is sending investigators to decide. a violent storm roared through the big apple during the evening commute hour yesterday. as you can see from it video. wow. >> some commuter trains at a standstill this morning because of all the storm damage. several trees knocked down in new york and one tree killed a woman when it landed on a parked car. that storm also knocking out power for about 30,000 people. meanwhile, karl just keeps getting stronger and is a category 3 hurricane much more powerful when it hit mexico's yucatan peninsula as a tropical storm earlier this week. now it's heading towards mexico's gulf coast. it's expected to make landfall north of the city of veracruz.

there is a hurricane warning there around 200 miles at the coast. southbound 880 an accident, couple of cars off to the right side of the roadway. traffic moving decent through that area. checking 880 through oakland, no troubles both directions actually clear. northbound into oakland southbound towards hayward. bay bridge lights are on, you can see traffic building especially in the cash lanes. light though for friday. you're not all the way back into the maze. we usually are by this point. westbound 4 hillcrest to loveridge slow and go, speeds around 12 miles an hour. and we have reports of a new wreck. northbound 238 connector to 580. accident stuck in lanes. 680 looking good through pleasanton but i'm showing you a map of this area because it's too foggy for chopper to fly to our hi-5 this morning with you takes to us pleasanton. but we have a lovely picture of the folks from the pleasanton firehouse art center. this is where they are celebrating the grand opening this weekend.

denying michelle obama ever described her life as first lady as hell. the alleged comment written in a book out today by french first lady carla sarkozy. the book describes a recent white house where she asked mrs. obama about her role as first lady. now, according to the book, mrs. obama replied, it's hell! and i can't stand it. hm. you think she really said that? >> i don't know. >> the french embassy in washington has released a statement now that mrs. sarkozy distances herself completely from the book. the tea party scored big in delaware this week. it sent shockwaves through both the democrat and republican parties. >> that's right. here to talk more about this is phil matier with former assembly speaker and former mayor of san francisco willie brown. >> you're already laughing. >> it's on the previous story where we're talking about the french prime minister's wife, right? >> she was a former model and

>> absolutely. her conduct. but given you know -- so what? that's sells, you sell it. >> you're trying to get elected. that is what's on the market. >> believe me, for christmas, the dolls are going to be sarah palin. >> it is amazing, though, or not amazing, there is sarah palin. okay. they do look a lot alike. they do sound a lot alike. what is the secret for this going on in the republican party right now? you know, i talked with carly fiorina yesterday, she said it's not one tea party. it's a host of tea parties and people are just really upset. >> people are really upset. they are angry. everything that displeases them, whether it's a husband or wife relationship, whether it's a teenager and a mother and a father, whether it's your job, whether it's your television station it doesn't matter. you're angry and you're taking it out on elected officials and i'm glad i'm not one. [ laughter ] >> because it's not just republicans. it's democrats, as well. >> as a matter of fact, it's more evident in the republican primaries not very many democrats have -- incumbents

have lost their primaries. the republicans are going down like flies in the primaries. all across the board. if you are an establishment republican, you should be already looking for a job. >> yeah. why wah seems to be going on there? >> it's because within the framework of the republican party, that's where that protest comes from. that's where the people really are. they are not very much among the democrats. at one time you had that kind of thing going on with the democrats. they were antiwar and hold us all accountable on the left. they were anti-or pro labor and would hold us accountable. we have now become them so there is nobody to protest. >> i see they have a movement, the tea party movement. they have a message that doesn't sound like it's very clear and the same so what is going to happen to the political system when these people -- and it appears some of them will get into office??? >> i'm telling you, "these

people" will morph into being what they did in 1994. if you remember 194 they had something called the contract on america and they blew the democrats out of the water. within two years, bill clinton was back on top, got reelected handsomely and went on to control it. the same thing will happen with "these people." all of their utterances becomes what we protest and what we all i am brace. and the minute that they start to serve, they start enjoying it and when they enjoy it they lose the edge. >> so what will happen with the democratic party? how do you respond to this? and, you know, what's going to happen? this is like a soap opera. >> a reality show! >> in november? >> listen, people elect people. people don't elect concepts and philosophies and ideas. you could be part of the democratic party and if you make sure people were in love with you, no matter what they thought about the party, they would reelect you. >> the problem is they don't love anybody right now. whatever it is, the movement

pressure allowed. the "mercury news" reports this morning that pg&e has yet to comply with a state order to reduce pressure in the pipeline that exploded, by 20%. there was a vigil last night for the mother and daughter killed in the explosion, jacqueline grieg and her 13- year-old daughter janessa. >> go ahead and look around. notice the church full of smiling faces. the faces of the people who really do care about us. >> reporter: at a funeral this morning, janessa and her mother jacquelin will be remembered at saint cecilia catholic church at a funeral mass in san francisco. it begins at 11:00 a.m. >> thank you. anne makovec live in san bruno. castro valley for traffic, northbound 238 ramps to northbound 880 lanes are
