heading out the door. gianna, good morning. >> good morning. a live look at the bay bridge toll plaza. traffic light so far, friday light in fact this morning. easy 18 minutes from the carquinez bridge to the maze. reports of a disabled vehicle eastbound 80 at university through berkeley so that may slow you down a bit. heads up out the door. metering lights are off. chp talking about lots of fog through the bay area especially as you work your way along the peninsula. i'll have details coming up. here's tracy with your forecast. >> plenty of fog but your afternoon highs are going to be slightly cooler than yesterday. 70s in the area. 60s in san francisco. and 63 in pacifica. that's today's afternoon highs. we are cooling down for the weekend and a chance of showers. i got your weekend forecast coming up. >> thank you. it is 6:01. too much pressure? that's one possibility being looked at as a cause in last

week's pipeline explosion. anne makovec is in san bruno to explain. good morning. >> reporter: overpressurized lines are apparently a major cause of gas line explosion. and that is the cause that if it's true could place major liability on pg&e. and it is one of several aspects the ntsb has been investigating since last thursday. federal investigators visited a terminal in milpitas to check records and investigate employees. there are no results yet but pg&e says it always operated that line below the maximum pressure allowed. and the "mercury news" is reporting that pg&e has yet to comply with a state order to reduce pressure in the pipeline that exploded by 20% and that pg&e is apparently seeking more "clarity" on the issue before it does so.

as the investigation continues, so does the mourning. there was a vigil last night for the mother and daughter killed in the explosion, meantime. people of gathered at saint cecilia catholic church to remember jacqueline grieg and her 13-year-old daughter janessa. the eighth grader was the student body president at saint cecilia school. at the service they played a tape of her speaking at her condition firmmation. >> go ahead and look around. notice the church full of smiling faces. the faces of the people who really do care about us. >> reporter: there is a funeral this morning. >> necessary 15 and her mom jacquelin at the saint cecilia catholic church. coming up at 6:30, we'll hear more of janessa's confirmation speech. words that could ring true to mourners today. sydnie back to you.

>> thank you, anne makovec in san bruno. the number of people killed in the san bruno explosion may rise from four to seven. late last night the family of three missing people released a statement saying their loved ones are dead. three people were inside a home next to the blast site. the family says the remains of two men and one woman were discovered at the house. the coroner is performing dna tests on the remains of greg bullis, his 16-year-old son william and his mother lavonne. san mateo county prosecutors have this message for anyone who tries to profit from this disaster. >> we view them as vermin. >> two women were charged yesterday with attempting to impersonate victims of the blast. this is exclusive video of them in court. investigators say sonia smith and lisa justin were trying to get free food and other assistance. authorities are looking at four more suspected fraudulent applications linked to the explosion. >> we are going to charge them with everything we are can charge them with. we are not going to plea bargain

with them and ask for no leniency. >> investigators want to remind people to watch for identity thieves as well as contractors who may try to take advantage of disaster victims. a man shot by police in concord was wanted for several armed robberies. 25-year-old bryan brownwhite is in critical condition. police chased him in concord early yesterday. they say they shot him when he pointed a weapon at them. they learned later it was a toy gun. brownwhite had outstanding warrants totaling $900,000 for armed robberies in fremont and san jose. >> state officials are promising tougher laws on fire safety following the trace elementary school fire in san jose. flames destroyed the main building, library and dozens of classrooms. state lawmakers say there were no automatic fire sprinklers or alarms because that building was being remodeled. that's a loophole in the law they say needs to be closed.

visit to britain. the vatican says he has no plans to change his schedule. a new record in california and unfortunately it is bad. we have gone longer than ever before without a state budget, 79 days beating the old record boy a day. governor schwarzenegger and legislative leaders are scheduled to meet today. but there is no sign they are close it a deal to close the state's $19 billion deficit. most state offices are closed today because it is a furlough friday. bay area home sales taking a hit for the second straight month. according to dataquick, about 6700 new and existing single family houses sold last month. that's down 11% from the same time last year. people are thinking twice about buying because they are worried about jobs and the uncertainly market. a federal bill through congress could help you keep your cell phone bills from going any higher. the house committee has passed

a bill that would ban new state or local taxes on cell phone service that would be for the next five years. however, the bill wouldn't lower existing taxes or fees or ban those federal tax increases. the bill is now on the way to the full house for a vote. some good news now about a woman who has inspired so many of us. ida cotton is the 85-year-old cal state east bay graduate who faced homelessness after she finished her master's degree. she had been living in student housing and had nowhere else to go. the university let ida stay through the summer while friends looked for just the right place. now she is moving into senior housing in oakland. >> i am sad to a certain extent. but then there is nothing keeping me from visiting and vice versa of friends visiting me. and i'm going to make new friends. >> i like her attitude. >> she is a little spitfire.

good morning from the traffic center. chp headed out to the scene of an accident eastbound 80 right at south 101. now, it was also reported on the south 101 connector to the east 80 blocking the transition lane. we have a live camera in that area. you can see traffic is starting to build just a little bit. the accident is just beyond where this camera is. so give yourself some extra time. it is blocking lanes until they get this off to the right side of the roadway. let's head to the bay bridge. traffic friday light. metering lights off, slight delays in the cash lanes, no delays off the eastshore freeway towards the bay bridge. howard will be shut down

between third and fourth streets due to oracle open world that gets under way on sunday. that's taking place at the moscone center. we have other closures to report. mason between ellis and o'farrell will be shut down on saturday morning. and the eastbound lanes of taylor will be shut down between o'farrell and eddy, that gets under way on sunday morning. stop and go through antioch, the usual stuff, speeds around 19 miles per hour on that westbound side slow and go mostly between hillcrest and loveridge. westbound 580 speeds in the 40s from 205 to the altamont pass. dealing with dense fog on highway 1 through pacifica. also 280 through daly city and through south san francisco. give yourself extra time out the door. and checking your drive through milpitas, looks like not too bad actually. i know our camera isn't working. 880/237 connector not bad at all. tracy has your forecast. >> thank you, gianna. forecast out the door, it's cloudy out there.

fog and drizzle along the coastline. fog and drizzle around the bay. delays on arrivals at sfo around one hour and areas of fog with mostly cloudy conditions inland. temperatures for the morning from the mid-50s to the mid- 60s. so many clouds out there we haven't cooled off that much overnight in the early-morning hours. this afternoon slightly cooler, inland highs in the 70s and 80s. mid- to upper 60s in the bay, lower to mid-60s at the coast with drizzle expected at the coast during the day. showing you the satellite and radar because we have a frontal system headed this way. and because of this frontal system, we'll have increased clouds throughout the day for saturday, for your weekend, and even a chance of showers in the forecast, rain showers, for sunday. today's highs in the lower 70s in mountain view, plenty of sunshine. lower 70s in union city. closer to the coast more clouds you will run into and temperatures in the lower to

the service for jacqueline grieg and her daughter janessa will be at saint cecilia catholic church in san francisco at 11:00 a.m. a vigil was held for them last night. a fourth sexual assault has been reported at a walnut creek apartment complex. a berkeley man is still in jail on charges related to the three other cases reported at that same complex a few months ago. one of the world's largest and holiest jade buddha statues is visiting the bay area. it will be uncovered in east nature is saturday. it's one stop on a world tour. the jade buddha for universal peace took five years to finish and carved from the largest piece of generally quality jade at 4.5 tons and insured for $5 million. >> it needs to be viewed in order to really feel the power and the beauty of it. right now we are looking at

true. one of several potential causes the ntsb is focused on since last thursday. was there a gas leak in the neighborhood prior to the explosion? was it reported to the proper authorities? were the shutoff valves functioning and accessible? what were the pressure levels in the pipe before it burst? the ntsb has visited terminals to find out how high the pressure was and they are investigating the people who worked at that terminal saying the information they are gathering is like an airplane's black box. the "mercury news" is reporting comply with a state order to reduce pressure in the pipeline that exploded, by 20% and that pg&e is seeking clarity on the issue before it does so. now as the investigation continues, so does the mourning. there was a vigil last night for the mother and daughter killed in the explosion. people gathered at saint cecilia catholic church to remember jacqueline grieg and her 13-year-old daughter.

it appears there are three more victims of the blast up to 7. a family said their loved ones are dead. lavonne bullis, her son greg and grandson william were inside a home next it the blast site. the family says the remains of two men and a woman were discovered at the house. the coroner's performing dna tests on the remains but the results could take several weeks. police say it is the fourth sexual assault at the same walnut creek apartment complex in the past two months. the latest reported assault happened last night inside a unit at the park regency apartments on oak road. a berkeley man is still jailed on charges related to the three other cases at that complex reported since july. dna testing links him to one rape at the complex. that defendant pled not guilty.

it was a toy gun that an armed robbery suspect pointed at police in concord before they shot him early yesterday morning. 25-year-old bryan brownwhite was critly injured when officers opened fire. it was a fake gun. brownwhite is in critical but stable condition. he is suspected in several armed robberies in the east and south bay areas. he had outstanding arrest warrants totaling $900,000. environmentalists are asking ship operators to watch out for whales off the bay area coast after a container ship headed to the port of oakland hit a whale yesterday. no one knew what happened until they reached port and saw the animal on the bow. they are trying to determine if it was dead when the ship hit it. bay to breakers is working to change its party reputation. organizers of the race say alcohol and floats will be banned from the race this year, participants being encouraged to register but the number of people allowed to sign up will

morning, foggy, cloudy out there. and we have delays on arrivals at sfo one hour. conditions in the afternoon expecting sunshine inland with highs near 80 in antioch, 79 degrees in fairfield. 72 in benicia and 70 in oakland. more clouds the closer you get to the bay and cooler at the coast. more bay area cities and their highs in just a few moments. back to you. >> thank you. state officials are promising tougher laws on fire safety. this all comes after the trace elementary school fire in san jose. kcbs radio's matt bigler tells us about a loophole that lawmakers say needs to be closed. matt, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. that's right. this loophole we're talking about has to do with the recently remodeled trace elementary school classrooms. of course, they were destroyed by the fire on july 5. but when the school district did the remodel couple of years back, they used a loophole in state law that allows them to remodel classrooms without installing

modern fire safety systems like smoke detectors, like fire sprinklers, because it was a locally funded project. that's the loop home. yesterday here in san jose, some lawmakers gathered from sacramento and talked to school officials and basically said, look, we need to close this loophole in the name of fire safety at schools. vincent matthews, the superintendent of san jose unified says they are forming a task force to look at fire safety throughout the school community. >> we want to, you know, figure out as we move forward exactly what's going to be best for the students and facilities and so we are going to be asking the hard questions, asking ourselves the tough and difficult questions but we want to do what's best and that's our foremost safety for us is the students and the community. >> reporter: the trace fire is still an open arson investigation. just this week, school officials added another $5,000 to the existing $10,000 reward so now the reward for information leading to the person who started this fire is now $15,000. that's for the identification, arrest and conviction of the

our time now 6:41. well, the question in new york this morning, was it a tornado? >> that's what everyone is asking. the national weather service is sending investigators to decide. a violent storm roared through the big apple during the evening commute hour yesterday. as you can see from it video. wow. >> some commuter trains at a standstill this morning because of all the storm damage. several trees knocked down in new york and one tree killed a woman when it landed on a parked car. that storm also knocking out power for about 30,000 people. meanwhile, karl just keeps getting stronger and is a category 3 hurricane much more powerful when it hit mexico's yucatan peninsula as a tropical storm earlier this week. now it's heading towards mexico's gulf coast. it's expected to make landfall north of the city of veracruz.

there is a hurricane warning there around 200 miles at the coast. southbound 880 an accident, couple of cars off to the right side of the roadway. traffic moving decent through that area. checking 880 through oakland, no troubles both directions actually clear. northbound into oakland southbound towards hayward. bay bridge lights are on, you can see traffic building especially in the cash lanes. light though for friday. you're not all the way back into the maze. we usually are by this point. westbound 4 hillcrest to loveridge slow and go, speeds around 12 miles an hour. and we have reports of a new wreck. northbound 238 connector to 580. accident stuck in lanes. 680 looking good through pleasanton but i'm showing you a map of this area because it's too foggy for chopper to fly to our hi-5 this morning with you takes to us pleasanton. but we have a lovely picture of the folks from the pleasanton firehouse art center. this is where they are celebrating the grand opening this weekend.

industry. settlement would be the best regards for both sides in this collusion case. it could be tough for the justice department to prove that workersaree harmed. consumer prices going up. % last month in august. mainly flat though when you strip away gas prices. but at least it is an increase showing the deflation is still not a threat, prices up .3%. oracle having very strong quarter, profit up 20%. it's revenue up 48%. benefiting from hardware sales of its takeover of sun microsystems. that's helping the stock market. dow up 22. nasdaq higher by 8. s&p up by 3. oracle shares right now are up almost 6%. they have already been up 10% in the past three months. >> thank you. well, the white house is

denying michelle obama ever described her life as first lady as hell. the alleged comment written in a book out today by french first lady carla sarkozy. the book describes a recent white house where she asked mrs. obama about her role as first lady. now, according to the book, mrs. obama replied, it's hell! and i can't stand it. hm. you think she really said that? >> i don't know. >> the french embassy in washington has released a statement now that mrs. sarkozy distances herself completely from the book. the tea party scored big in delaware this week. it sent shockwaves through both the democrat and republican parties. >> that's right. here to talk more about this is phil matier with former assembly speaker and former mayor of san francisco willie brown. >> you're already laughing. >> it's on the previous story where we're talking about the french prime minister's wife, right? >> she was a former model and

have lost their primaries. the republicans are going down like flies in the primaries. all across the board. if you are an establishment republican, you should be already looking for a job. >> yeah. why wah seems to be going on there? >> it's because within the framework of the republican party, that's where that protest comes from. that's where the people really are. they are not very much among the democrats. at one time you had that kind of thing going on with the democrats. they were antiwar and hold us all accountable on the left. they were anti-or pro labor and would hold us accountable. we have now become them so there is nobody to protest. >> i see they have a movement, the tea party movement. they have a message that doesn't sound like it's very clear and the same so what is going to happen to the political system when these people -- and it appears some of them will get into office??? >> i'm telling you, "these

people" will morph into being what they did in 1994. if you remember 194 they had something called the contract on america and they blew the democrats out of the water. within two years, bill clinton was back on top, got reelected handsomely and went on to control it. the same thing will happen with "these people." all of their utterances becomes what we protest and what we all i am brace. and the minute that they start to serve, they start enjoying it and when they enjoy it they lose the edge. >> so what will happen with the democratic party? how do you respond to this? and, you know, what's going to happen? this is like a soap opera. >> a reality show! >> in november? >> listen, people elect people. people don't elect concepts and philosophies and ideas. you could be part of the democratic party and if you make sure people were in love with you, no matter what they thought about the party, they would reelect you. >> the problem is they don't love anybody right now. whatever it is, the movement
