breakers, the wacky and colorful race shutting down the streets of san francisco for the annual event today. the news at five starts right now. thanks for joining us. i'm gia vang and i'm terry mcsweeney questions tonight about the status of iran's president after his helicopter went down in iran's mountains. the condition of president ebrahim raisi remains unclear. right now. that's according to reports out of iran media asking for prayers for his safety. iran's vice president now reporting two people from the flight have made contact with the rescue team. but it's still unknown whether raisi was one of those two. news of the crash landing comes as demonstrators around the world protested tehran's murder and imprisonment of critics. nbc bay area's tom jensen talked to demonstrators in berkeley today after news of the iranian president's helicopter crash. definitely on the minds of demonstrators at this event in berkeley and others like it around the globe today. and

there is no remorse for the man who many call khomeini's henchmen. these berkeley demonstrators are here to support young iranians bravely fighting for progressive changes in uprising. since september 2022. it's called a global cry for no to executions. and today their eyes are glued to video from the foggy mountains of iran, where a helicopter carrying 63 year old president ebrahim raisi, the foreign minister and other iranian dignitaries crashed and were search and rescue efforts are underway. each one. iran's state run tv and its supreme leader, ayatollah ali khamenei, who is the country's ultimate decision maker, told people to pray for the president and the foreign minister. but demonstrators in berkeley and at protests worldwide this weekend who object to the jailing of dissidents and death sentences of outspoken artists and journalists, say there is no love lost for raisi. this guy was a murderer. he was a he was one of those people that was

responsible for killing political prisoners. i don't think that many people are that sad. and maybe some people are a little happy inside. they're hopeful that rice and eventually khamenei will be replaced by new, more progressive leaders and political prisoners in iran will be set free. young generation is totally against any kind of ideology government. they want to have freedom. they want to be connected to the rest of the world. only time will truly tell if change is really in the wind in iran. but demonstrators promise to keep the pressure on tehran to end the tyranny in berkeley. tom jensen, nbc, bay area news. in case of rice's death, iran's first vice president mohammad mokhber, will be next in line for the presidency after receiving a nod from khamenei. the new president then must be elected in 50 days. there's a lot to watch on this story. our coverage continues tonight on nbc nightly news. that is at 530. well, president joe biden delivered the commencement address at morehouse college

this morning. it was his most direct engagement with college students since the start of the israel-hamas war. and there were some protests. as president biden took the stage, graduating students remained seated and silent, even as older alumni nearby cheered. a handful of other students in the crowd turned their backs to the stage. announcement of the president's speech drew backlash among faculty and the morehouse community, who oppose his handling of the war in gaza. in his speech, the president reiterated his calls for an immediate cease fire there, along with more humanitarian aid in that region. in a democracy, we debate and dissent about america's role in the world. i want to say this very clearly. i support peaceful, nonviolent protest. your voices should be heard. and i promise you, i hear them. and you can see some faculty behind the president holding up a congolese flag on stage as he spoke. the democratic republic of congo remains embattled in a civil war. activists are calling on the u.s. to help end the

violence there as well, honoring the legacy of an lgbt activist, san francisco celebrated harvey milk day today, people gathered at jane warner memorial plaza at market and castro streets to honor the life and work of harvey milk. he was the first openly gay politician in california. he was an advocate for the lgbtq community. today's event featured a block party musical performances, speakers including the mayor and state senator scott wiener, who talked about how milk fought against discriminatory ordinances in the 70s. he says, you fast forward 50 years and those same issues are back in the spotlight, and look where we are. we have once again, bigots who are trying to ban our community around the country. we have school boards, even in california, that are attacking queer kids, trans kids . and so when i think back to what harvey would think, he would be so happy that our community is rising up. milk was shot and killed by a fellow supervisor, dan white, after

milk had served just one year in office. milk was 48 years old when he died. well, change could be coming to i-80. that might impact your next trip to tahoe. caltrans is one step closer to opening toll lanes on i-80 between davis and sacramento. the state transportation commission approved adding one toll lane to both sides of the interstate, similar to our express lanes in the bay area. the proposed lanes would stretch for 17 miles on 80 through yolo county, and the tolls would impact cars with 1 or 2 people inside. but at this point, it's unclear how much drivers will pay and the timeline of the proposed project. an update now to the repaving work that's closed a portion of the 680 this weekend. several lanes between san ramon and pleasanton remain closed, but caltrans says the road is set to open on time tomorrow at 4 a.m. before your morning commute. three southbound lanes are also closed between al costa boulevard in san ramon and the five 8680 interchange in pleasanton, and so is one northbound lane in the north bay. a second highway

closure for a major repaving project, caltrans, shut down westbound lanes on highway 37 on friday night that is between vallejo and sears point. the lanes are set to reopen by five tomorrow morning. a group pushing for rent control in redwood city says it has enough signatures to put the measure on the november ballot. faith action bay area says it's collected thousands of signatures over the last five months. the group plans on submitting those signatures to the san mateo county clerk tuesday. if it makes it on the ballot and is passed, the measure would limit annual rent increases and limit evictions. similar measures could come before voters in pittsburg, san pablo and larkspur. there is a growing problem within our housing crisis and some of our communities most vulnerable are now struggling to keep their homes after the pandemic. our investigative unit has uncovered a spike in the number of elderly people in danger of eviction. like many major cities across california, oakland enacted an eviction moratorium during the pandemic that banned landlords from kicking out tenants unable

to pay their rent. but after the three year long moratorium ended last july, landlords were allowed to begin demanding a year's worth of back rent and evict tenants who didn't pay up. well. today, nearly a quarter of the oakland clients at the eviction defense center are seniors. that's up 17% compared to pre-pandemic. our senior investigator, bigad shaban, spoke with an elderly woman being forced to leave her home of more than 26 years. you can watch her story and hear from an attorney now representing her. go to our website nbcbayarea.com . slash investigations san francisco's wackiest race took place this morning. yeah, we're talking, of course, about bay to breakers. while some racers are serious about their pace splits and finish time, many aren't in it for the fun, of course. and as usual, there were a lot of costumes, themed groups and props, and a few decided to go without any kind of costume altogether. okay, well, for some it was a first time. for others, this is an annual event. i'm the

they will refloat the dolly at high tide tomorrow morning. it's been stuck under tons of wreckage the entire refloat and transit process is expected to take about 21 hours, where it will be escorted to a local marine terminal. the milestone comes nearly eight weeks since the collapse killed six construction workers, crippling the port and cutting off the highway. there san francisco is teaming with street soccer players this weekend for the annual street soccer usa cup series. the two day event, featuring youth as well as recreational adult teams from across the city checking out the moves here. all the games are played at street soccer stadium in san francisco, down near the bay bridge down there. street soccer usa is a nonprofit with the goal of fighting poverty and strengthening community, along with teaching soccer skills. street soccer usa. we talk about playing for more. we don't just play for the goals, but we play for our families, our community. and that's what we teach on the field, right? we introduce soccer skills, but we really teach so much more. it's

communication, it's leadership. how do you support your family? how do you work towards your goals, whether they're at home or at school or in work? yeah in addition to all of that, the tournament featured music, food and guest appearances. san francisco has been hosting the competition for eight years now. check it out today, the sausalito port gigi's american community held the festival of the holy spirit. the festival honors the holy spirit and memory of portugal's queen isabel. the day includes a parade with queens from cultural centers across the bay area and there are numerous societies that are portugal's portuguese cultural societies in california and some of them come together for these parades throughout the summer. so this is just one of the very first ones. after we'll go to mass, the families will bless along with the father, to bless the girls. the girls

francisco, the wind really did clear out some of the coastal low clouds as we wrap up the weekend. just a little bit cooler at this hour at that 60 degree temperature compared to yesterday. but as we move forward, we will see those temperatures warming up. now let's check those allergies. olive pollen, very high right now. so if you have issues i know at our house it's like a sea of kleenex all over the place from the grass pollen and the other tree pollen. grass pollen has come down a little bit. so good news there. if you suffer from allergies related to grass pollen. other categories starting to drop off now as things continue to warm up, you may notice the hills starting to brown up a little bit. we may begin to see some relief from those pollen counts as we head over the next week or so. winds have really kicked up. we were watching this last night looking at the wind speeds again, picking up right around this hour, and they certainly did that out around sfo. wind sustained at almost 30mph. but here's the good news. if you like sunshine, look at how those winds down the coast really did clear out the low clouds and the thunderstorms around the sierra

today, mostly up towards the reno area that will be an area to watch again tomorrow. south of lake tahoe. a chance of those sierra thunderstorms, but just really some patchy low clouds around the bay area as you wake up tomorrow morning so you can see how these clouds start to kind of fill in again, mostly around monterey bay, south of morgan hill and gilroy, and then more sunshine as we move forward into the afternoon morning temperatures. a little bit on the cool side, upper 40s to low 50s. lots of sunshine. still a bit breezy near the coast, but you can see at least for tomorrow. we're still mostly talking 60s and 70s now. watch what happens by tuesday. mid to upper 80s inland 80 across the north bay 70 bayside for a day. we begin to cool down a little bit on wednesday. now let's move forward to saturday and watch how these temperatures drop next weekend. starting off the 60s around the bay area as we start memorial day weekend. and the culprit here will be an area of low pressure that will approach as we head towards next weekend. likely some wind and cooling as

we head into saturday, but then as we head towards memorial day the following monday, temperatures should rebound again. any chance of showers likely staying near the sierra, so the 7-day forecast follows a familiar theme of midweek warm ups weekend cool downs. we'll see that play out again next week, but a little more extreme as you saw midweek. we'll have those mid 80s and then saturday for a day dropping back into the 60s. so much for the unofficial start to summer weekend as it sometimes referred to, but temperatures will rebound as we head towards memorial day monday. but we're seeing no rain right now. no, the sierra, the sierra, right, looks like it's going to stay there for a while. coming up, sean diddy combs speaking out for the first time since the release of that shocking video showing him brutally beating his ex-girlfriend cassie at a hotel. why? her attorney says his apology is not enough

beating his ex-girlfriend in 2016, and we want to warn you, the video may be triggering and difficult to watch for some viewers, according to cnn. the video was captured in a los angeles hotel in march of 2016. it matched the description of a violent beating that the victim, cassandra ventura, whose stage name is cassie, detailed in a now settled lawsuit. that lawsuit, ventura claimed combs raped physically abused her over the course of their relationship. since ventura fell

filed that lawsuit, combs has been hit with five more, accusing him of sexual assault, sexual trafficking, and other criminal activity. he released a video statement on his instagram page today calling his behavior in the surveillance video inexcusable. this corroborates and makes, cassie a key witness in whatever charges may be pending and coming down the pike for diddy. i i don't see how someone like him, with evidence such as this survives this type of scrutiny. attorneys for cassie said in a statement combs apology was more about himself than the many people he has hurt. the los angeles district attorney's office said in a statement this weekend. it was aware of the video, but would be unable to charge anyone in connection to it because it happened outside the statute of limitations for assault. combs is the subject of a federal inquiry and has had his properties in california and florida raided in march by homeland security. the man charged with punching actor

steve buscemi is in jail tonight. buscemi, best known for his roles in fargo and boardwalk empire. you recognize that face? the 60 year old was punched in the face while just walking in new york city last week. the man accused of assaulting him was arraigned yesterday, and he's being held on a $50,000 bond. he's expected back in court on thursday. troubling news for americans who suffer from adhd. the us food and drug administration says that chronic medication shortages over the last two years are finally resolved, but doctors and patients report they're still struggling to fill prescriptions. while the supply has gotten better, some doctors say a significant number of patients are in limbo. doctors offices are forced to call various pharmacies or switch patients to different versions of drugs, which may or may not be covered by insurance. and your facturers say supply is also being strained by the unprecedented demand for adhd drugs. up next, the countdown to paris continues. how former beatles guitarist paul mccartney

i remember back in january of 2023, look at that damage. january of 2023 a bomb cyclone ravaged the central coast, destroyed the wharf. since then, there's been a large community effort to rebuild it, make it better than ever, and that includes new light fixtures, benches, tables, viewing stations and new art. bring it back. yeah one of the volunteers is creating a mosaic with three glass panels to keep of kelp forest and an underwater scene. the community decided on this design to help make the project happen. volunteers set a goal of
