and her family says they still have no idea when she'll return. when doctor haleh sheikholeslami traveled thousands of miles from the bay area to help the injured in gaza, this picture was taken when she arrived there. now, that sign has been destroyed. she just saw the suffering and wanted to help. the latest attack by israel shut down the rafah border into egypt, restricting her planned travel out of the country and forcing the doctor to relocate to the coast. while the state department says it evacuated 20 american health care workers, the council on american islamic relations, or care, says the san carlos doctor and a san francisco health care worker remain trapped in gaza. unfortunately we were very disappointed to learn that doctor sheikholeslami and her bay area colleague were not even given the opportunity or option to evacuate. they learned about the evacuation after the fact.

now care is working with the doctor's family, reaching out to the state department and congresswoman anna eshoo to reunite the doctor with her two daughters and husband in the bay area ahmad talked with his sister today and says despite the challenges, she remains focused on helping people in gaza. her main concern continues to be, you know, medical supplies are low, you know, being able to provide services is difficult. he says. he still doesn't know why his sister is not returning home with the other american doctors, obviously is a level of frustration. and so far, the doctor's family says they've been given no timeline on when she might return home. in a statement from palo alto foundation medical group, where the doctor works in san carlos, her colleagues said they're also working with the white house and the state department to bring her home in the newsroom. marianne favro nbc bay area news. new at 11 disturbing messages found in a campus dorm

in the south bay san jose state university says someone wrote hateful, anti-black and anti-jewish notes on a dry erase board at the joe west residence hall. they were found two weeks ago, but the university sent an alert to students and staff yesterday. the chief diversity officer says the university denounces the racist messages, saying they violate its discrimination, harassment and retaliation policy. campus police are investigating federal prosecutors are asking a judge to reopen the sentencing for david depape. he's the man convicted of breaking into nancy pelosi's house and attacking her husband. now, yesterday, a judge sentenced to pap to 30 years in prison. but prosecutors now say depape was not given the opportunity to speak, and the law requires a judge to ask the defendant if they want to speak. during a sentencing hearing, the judge agreed with prosecutors scheduled a new sentencing hearing for may 28th. depape still faces separate state charges. jury selection for that trial begins next week. a

traffic nightmare on the bay bridge today because of a fire on yerba buena island. the fire broke out around 230 this afternoon. you can see it right here. crews battling the flames from land and water for about three hours, the fire sending heavy smoke into the area. and the firefight impacted traffic on both decks of the bay bridge. at one point, the eastbound lanes were closed, causing a major backup. all lanes reopened around six tonight. the cause of the fire is still under investigation. drivers in the east bay may notice more traffic than usual this weekend. that is because part of southbound 680 in san ramon is closed through early monday. we want to show you where this is happening. take along this. the red section you see here. this is between al costa boulevard and the five 8680 interchange in pleasanton. one northbound lane is also closed. this is all part of an ongoing project to repave 680 caltrans crews are closing potholes and fixing deteriorated pavement. unlike other weekend closures, we've seen this one is not a full closure. the two right lanes of southbound 680

are staying open. the caltrans is still warning drivers to stay away. it does tend to get congested. and so even again though, there are those two lanes open, three are closed. so if at all possible, please do avoid the area. alternate routes include 780 highway four or highway 24. caltrans says all lanes of 680 are set to reopen monday at 4 a.m. in time for the morning commute. okay not unexpected, but now official san francisco mayor london breed launched her reelection campaign today. this is video right here of the mayor. at a previous events today, we caught up with her at a car show. she talked about her goals for a second term, which include pushing for a fully funded police department and boosting growth and the recovery in the downtown area. breed says she's also working to increase affordable housing and transportation, reduce homelessness, and make the city's streets cleaner and safer. we didn't just clean up the streets for apec. we're not just cleaning up the streets for

reelection campaign. we are making sure that we're doing everything we can, as we always have to lead the city to manage through challenging times. okay, one of breed's opponents, supervisor asha sapphire, was also at that event. the annual ocean avenue car show, and we spoke with him about the race as well. we got to have someone working family, immigrant that's going to fight to make sure san francisco remains a city for everyone, not just the extremely wealthy or extremely low income, but working and middle class families. breed and sapphire are running against former mayor mark farrell, tipping point co-founder daniel lurie and board of supervisors president aaron peskin. farm workers in the north bay are demanding higher wages today. hundreds of workers picketed in downtown healdsburg. a rally was held at the same time as a local wine tasting event. workers shared their demands, saying their wages have remained stagnant as the cost of living goes up and the wineries are making more. now, the sonoma county wine growers say that's just not

true. in a statement, the organization said in part, over the past six years, vineyard employees have gotten a 35% increase in hourly wages, adding more than 40% of vineyard employees in sonoma county also receive employee housing. a joyful day for thousands of graduating students at sonoma state university. lots of proud parents, friends, relatives cheering them on at commencement ceremonies today for the class of 2020. for many, many people there. this comes after a tense and controversial week of pro palestinian protests on campus. as a precaution, security was tight, with police officers and sheriff's deputies standing nearby. today's graduation comes after the csu chancellor announced this week university president mike lee is retiring. that happened after lee was placed on administrative leave wednesday following his response to those protests, lee declared an agreement with the

protesters, including a pledge to divest from israel. but the chancellor says lee offered concessions that cal state trustees never approved in just a few hours, the bay to breakers race will make its way through san francisco. final preparations are underway. you see them there. crews spent the day setting up the stage, making sure everything is in place ahead of tomorrow's big event. 20,000 runners will race through the city. some will even dress in costumes. bay to breakers a tradition going back to 1912. the event's. it is upbeat and it is fun, but organizers have to consider public safety as well. they say they have multiple security checkpoints in more than 200 private security guards. in addition to working with san francisco police, now sfpd says it doesn't know of any credible threats against that race. now, here's the route. runners start at main and howard, aka the bay. they cover about seven and a half miles through the city, ending where the waves break, aka the breakers at the great highway.

some road closures near the starting line are already in place. others will go into effect six tomorrow morning. a bay area block party. the wnba is coming to the bay and if today is any indication, fans are ready to cheer on the golden state valkyries. big crowds showed up for a block party at chase center, giving us a glimpse of the budding fan base. nbc bay area's alyssa goard spoke with fans and a team leader about what's ahead for the new franchise. send your love and make some noise for the golden state valkyries. just days after the bay area learned the name of its new wnba team, people packed thrive city outside chase center for a block party. obviously a huge fan of the warriors, and i think it's really exciting what's going on in the wnba right now. so it's the perfect timing. this is herstory in the making. exactly. herstory in the making. and this is bay area history. the team's name comes from norse mythology. the valkyries were warrior women known for being fearless. the affiliate team for the golden state warriors will be headquartered in oakland and

play home games in san francisco. well, there's still a while until the valkyries start playing games right here at the chase center in 2025, but already there are hundreds of people out here who are excited and getting hyped about this team. i want to bring my niece to the game. i really want to come to the games. of course i got swag. i'm wearing half of it right now and what we've seen is they don't only like it, they love it. i mean, merchandise is flying off the shelf. valkyries president jess smith says in the near future, team leaders will talk about coaching and strategy and gear up for an expansion draft in december. this moment in time for women's sports is culture setting, and that's also defined by the people that are going to be a part of how we build this. the block party featured a lineup of bay area music icons, including rap legend e-40. bay area there's a people that want to set like that. tell the people that pony riders that already the valkyries are making their own violet colored mark and

costumed characters like mickey mouse or cinderella. voted to join the actors equity association today, that means more than 1700 disneyland employees are part of the union. organizers say that the goal is to create a healthier, safer work environment for the actors. the walt disney company has not commented on the vote. well, a wild police chase in sacramento tonight after someone stole one of the fire department's pickup trucks. investigators say a thief took off with a pickup earlier this evening while it was parked at a fire station after officers and a police helicopter spotted the truck, they laid down spike strips to stop that driver, but the driver refused to get out, so they had to toss pepper balls into the truck to get him out and make an arrest. just in time for the summer, a portion of highway one in big sur is back open. you'll remember in march, storm caused part of the highway south of rocky creek bridge to crumble into the ocean. residents could only enter and leave the area through daily convoys. many nearby businesses were forced to close. yesterday, caltrans reopened the highway with a temporary solution. it is a

signal light that allows drivers to pass through in one direction at any point of the day or night you see it there. a local restaurant owner says he's now expecting a surge of visitors. we've had an immediate response from our guests wanting to come and see big sur and visit the various properties and just enjoy the coast. yeah, it's gorgeous down there. of course, caltrans is working on the slide damage further south on the other side of big sur. it says it hopes to reopen all of highway one by the fall. well, the state celebrated hmong american day on tuesday, the first of its kind resolution recognizing the day for the group of californians and the festivities. they continue to. this was at grant union high school in north sacramento today. and the students are performing the traditional or hmong song poetry. the event honored the historic resolution along with the graduates and students who are dedicated to upholding the hmong language, culture, and history. and there i am right there. you look familiar, right? very honored to

be the keynote speaker today. and to also get to hear from all the youth. sausalito sepulveda. some of the sights and sounds from this year's himalayan fair in the east bay. this has been a berkeley tradition for 41 years, drawing together community members from tibet, nepal, india, bhutan and pakistan. the annual festival at live oak park not only showcases a variety of dancers and performers, a lot of food. they've got vendors, they got arts and crafts, extremely color full. whoa! some of the money raised at the bazaar goes to support charities in the himalayan region. well, fireworks over the santa cruz boardwalk. that's what i'm talking about. yeah that's where the giant dipper. guess what? celebrating its 100th birthday. the display is part of a summer long tribute to the historic ride. it is the oldest roller coaster in california and one of the oldest still running in the country. the giant dipper opened

back on may 17th, 1924, took 327,000ft of lumber and 63,000 pounds of steel track to build the half mile track. it's the, as we mentioned, one of the oldest ones in california still running very cool. all right, giant dipper, i have been on it many times. i enjoy it and i prided myself the first time i was able at the crest to put it up, and i never, i never, ever changed. it's faster than you think. you get on it. you're like, wait a minute. yeah, what did i just get into that once you're in? yeah, it's too late. yeah. you know, and nice weather for the fireworks tonight. not too windy, but for other parts of the bay area. going to be dealing with a little more wind during the afternoon tomorrow. the reason why those east bay valleys ridge cooled off today. the ocean air conditioning on overdrive. right now in san jose, 59 degrees, partly cloudy skies. we'll see a few patches of low clouds into the morning. right now as you head over to

walnut creek 55. still, the southwest wind at 12mph out at the airport. sfo right now seeing 57 degrees, a little low cloud cover there near san mateo, and patchy low clouds around san francisco 53 degrees. so tomorrow morning, patchy low clouds, areas of drizzle possible. speaking of santa cruz, down along the south coast and parts of the south bay clearing, but turning windy for sunday afternoon and then a brief early week warm up on the way in the 7-day forecast. look at the wind right now into solano county that continues to bring in that marine air, but it's the wind on the coast will be watching for the afternoon. these areas in red showing up bodega bay, sonoma coast, marin county coastline could see those gusts 30 to 40mph. and also san francisco and down the peninsula for the afternoon. by mid afternoon and evening wind speeds starting to pick up a little bit like today, but more intense in terms of those peak gusts around the north bay coastline as we wrap up the weekend. so look at the effects on the low cloud cover. it's going to act a bit like a leaf

blower. it's going to mix in some drier air and start to clear the low clouds. once we pass the morning hours, there's a drizzle near santa cruz, but more sunshine as we wrap up the weekend. but that wind out of the west northwest will likely limit our temperatures from warming up a whole lot for the afternoon bay to breakers starting off in the low 50s with patchy low clouds approaching 60 around midday. and in terms of the rest of the bay area low 50s to start with the areas of low clouds to the south and then sunshine and increasing wind heading towards the afternoon weekend temperatures inland, wrapping things up in the mid 70s. still 60s closer to san francisco and oakland now for monday and tuesday. kind of a two day warmup for those inland valleys. mid 80s around the tri valley over to solano county, 80s around san jose, down towards morgan hill. then temperatures cool off again as we get towards wednesday and thursday. the reason why high pressure really can't set up and warm up our temperatures. a whole lot will be systems passing by to the north. doesn't look like it's going to bring showers here at times. perhaps for the sierra as we head into that memorial day weekend right

now. but a little bit of a cool down as we approach next weekend. so some wind for san francisco tomorrow afternoon and less wind for our inland valley should allow temperatures to climb a little bit by midweek and then trending cooler again as we head towards next weekend. not too shabby. no anthony flores joining us now for sports. and those san francisco giants suddenly looking explosive. that's right a great day for the giants especially at the plate. the giants had a season high in hits and runs against the rockies. luis matos sparked the offensive explosion today for the orange and black stick around. sports is next
