former san jose police chief tony mata is the new chief of investigations for the da, overseeing 62 detectives in his proposed budget. the county executive is recommending the da's office eliminate 20 of those positions. we're facing a $251.3 million structural deficit. james williams says he's asking most county departments to make difficult cuts. he says it's not an easy ask. it's exceedingly difficult. look, i don't relish at all bringing forward a recommended budget that has cuts. but the da says to specifically ask for eliminating 20 detectives is dangerous. i think this is the first time that i have ever been as concerned about public safety as i am, jeff rosen says. he offered to cut $11 million from his budget, including eliminating 28 positions, but he doesn't want to touch the detectives bureau. if these cuts go through, there will be more
6:01 pm
guns on the street. there will be more fentanyl there will be more rapists. there will be more gangsters. there will be more child molesters, and there will be a lot less safety for everyone else. but the county executive says a county by county comparison suggests the detective cuts would still keep the da's office on par with other jurisdictions, bringing it to the same staffing level it had five years ago. we are still doing very, very well. and so the decision, of course, on how to deploy those resources is up to the separately elected district attorney. but we've thought very carefully in bringing forth that proposal. we've looked at the data. still, williams says he's open to any ideas that will help reduce costs or bring in more revenue. but at this stage, the county executive says the math is not adding up in the south bay. damian trujillo, nbc, bay area news. 30 years in prison that is the sentence handed down to today david depape. he's the man convicted of breaking into
6:02 pm
former house speaker nancy pelosi's home and attacking her husband. depape stood mostly motionless in court throughout the hearing today. the u.s. district judge said she took into consideration the fact that depape had no prior criminal record. but she said the 30 year sentence is appropriate because of the violent nature of the attack, along with depapes intentions to harm then speaker nancy pelosi. had she been home, depape still faces separate state charges. jury selection for that trial begins next week. we have new information about the clash between police and protesters at uc berkeley last night. 12 people are now facing charges, including one cal student. the pro-palestinian protesters took over an abandoned building owned by the university two days ago. last night, police moved in to arrest them. uc berkeley says some of the officers were assaulted by people with crowbars. those officers were not injured, however, because they were wearing protective helmets. the protesters now face charges including burglary and vandalism

social media, the union members are demanding, among other things, amnesty for all students and faculty arrested or facing disciplinary action. the uc santa cruz strike will be the first of several strikes that the union intends to launch, one by one across all the campuses. in response, uc leaders today filed an unfair labor practice charge, and they're hoping the state will issue a cease and desist order to stop these planned strikes. it is finally open. we're talking about that scenic stretch of highway one that leads to big sur. part of the road disappeared back in march. during that strong storm we had nbc bay area's robert honda traveled to monterey county coastline to show us why both travelers and big sur businesses are so relieved. today is the first day that travelers could drive through on their own. recently, the chp and caltrans escorted convoys through twice a day, which helped, but not enough to satisfy all the visitors who wanted to go to big sur or the businesses that depend on them.
6:05 pm
there was no official ceremony at the repair site where highway one reopened early this morning, but that doesn't mean people weren't celebrating around the clock. repairs started right after slide damage shut down this southbound stretch into big sur on march 30th, and now a temporary signal light allows travelers to go through one direction at a time, anytime, day or night. caltrans says a sensor in the roadway and a mounted camera will keep wait times short. this is a the first phase of the repair that we've completed, and during this repair, we were actually able to do the geotech studies to see where we're going to support, put the supports for the eventual bridge that will span this repair site. caltrans is still working on slide damage. on the other side of big sur, which is cut off southern california visitors for more than a year. owners of the big sur river inn say today's reopening and the surge of bay area visitors is a lifesaver. we
6:06 pm
were definitely skating on thin ice at that point and like i said, we had to dip into some emergency funds to stay afloat and at this point, we see the brighter days now. and we're really excited to welcome people back to the business visitors. we talked to many from the bay area were relieved, including a cal graduate returning home. we're so happy that it opened because we had to drive back today. what did you think about the drive? it's beautiful. it's like probably one of my favorite places on earth. i'm very grateful, very exciting. this is a great area to be around. the trees, the neighborhoods and everything. this couple visiting from australia planned a trip to big sur today. we had no idea, no idea. and yes, we're very lucky because imagine driving all this way and having it closed and having to go back. so we're very happy. this is your lucky day. it is, isn't it? from what caltrans has learned from this repair and the progress being made down south, at the other slides, caltrans says it hopes to open all of highway one by this fall along highway one.
6:07 pm
robert honda, nbc, bay area news. robert, thank you. speaking of highways and freeways, another major road closure in the east bay beginning at 9:00 tonight, selected lanes on both sides of 680 will be closed between san ramon and pleasanton. this partial closure will stretch a little over two miles between acosta boulevard and the five 8680 connector. crews are repaving. so that's the good news. three southbound lanes will be closed and the northbound express lane will be closed. this will last until 4 a.m. on monday. police are searching for two men accused of robbing a mail carrier in palo alto. happened just before noon yesterday at the south wood apartments on middlefield road. police say two men approached the carrier, demanded he give them his postal keys. that mail carrier did hand them over, but refused to give them his wallet and his phone. the men pushed him to the ground, took off. no arrests have been made. all right. this is just the latest postal worker robbery to happen in the bay area earlier this month, a different postal worker

was held at gunpoint in dublin, and another mail carrier was robbed in san carlos. back in april, a popular chinese restaurant in downtown palo alto is shutting down after 38 years in business. jing jing gourmet will close for good this sunday, the owners say. inflation and rising costs are among the reasons why. here's nbc's ian cull. jing jing gourmet is known for its hunan and taiwanese dishes. it's one reason the line was out the door at lunch today, but the bigger reason is many customers who've loved eating here are stopping by. for one final meal. just like a family. you come here, you are just not walking to the restaurant. you are walking to a mammoth place that she cooks something so special and that you cannot find anywhere in the bay area. that's why the news. it's closing after 38 years on emerson street in downtown palo alto is so tough. george young was here on the day the restaurant opened. i was sad
6:09 pm
, you know, everything's changing. i just enjoyed it, you know? and it was it was nostalgic. you know, so emotional to see, all these crowd here. and that really means a lot to us. julie taylor is the owner's daughter and says her family immigrated from taiwan in the late 80s. the restaurant has been her mother's passion, so you can see that we kind of grew up here, and the restaurant is like a part of our life. yeah, so it's a really memorable place, she says. inflation, the rising costs of food and high rent are the main reasons they're shutting down. her mother is also getting older and the kids worry she's working too much. they almost closed during covid but decided to stay open and serve the community while donating food to seniors and local hospital workers. we have always tried to keep the price low, but at the same time, we also need to make some kind of profit to support my mom. financial reporter the family

may do takeout or cater from a different location, but nothing set in stone. but now, the place that once served notable diners like mark zuckerberg, jerry rice, even chelsea clinton will close for good on sunday night. so they're spending this last weekend celebrating their past and their community in palo alto, ian cull. nbc bay area news san francisco wants more tourists from china. and to make that happen, california is courting social media influencers from that country. nonprofit visit california sponsored the first trip for an influencer this month. focus was food and wine. agency has also sponsored three other influencers covering covering culture, lifestyle and road trips. this comes with a recent report that shows san francisco is lagging behind in tourism. leaders say that's because tourism from china hasn't yet recovered since the pandemic. up next, one of san francisco's most iconic skyscrapers is getting a major revamp. we're going to get an exclusive look at the changes coming to the

6:14 pm
aimed at keeping it going for another 50 years. you can see it from just about any vantage point in san francisco, rising from the skyline, peeking out above the buildings. a canvas for art. a character in art, the transamerica pyramid. like an exclamation mark on the financial district. when somebody says, well, where do you work? i say, i'm in the shadow of the pyramid and people immediately know where i am. at 853ft, that shadow falls long. it's a focal point when we look up. but over the years, the city's second tallest building has become somewhat of a shadow of itself. its grand lobby was split in half. its unique redwood grove closed during the pandemic, not exactly welcoming something which was closed and hunkered down. but this 52 year old office building is getting some new life. we've created a more tranquil relationship with the plaza. architect ben dobbin,
6:15 pm
of foster and partners, is helping reimagine its future through a sweeping rehab aimed at modernizing the iconic building. the first move was take as much as possible, which had already been incrementally put into place over time, and strip all of all of that away, down to the bones. the bones of original architect william pereira's design were all intact, providing the inspiration. we spent months to match the same concrete look, feel and texture and materials as was used in the original facade. work crews restored the public lobby, adding big picture windows and places to gather. we create a seamless experience between the inside and the outside, and 26 floors up will become fitted out and is in the process of becoming an amazing state of the art gym space for the building's tenants. just imagine running on a treadmill to this view. you have views all the way across north beach, the marina, the cruise terminal, and
6:16 pm
one floor up from there. and what was long ago. a public observation floor will now be a view lounge for building tenants. it'll be like a coffee bar in this corner here. while those areas are not open to the general public, the building's spruced up public redwood park will reopen this summer. when the building was unveiled back in 1972, the trees were only about 18ft tall, and now they're about 150ft tall. it's funny to think how iconic this building has become when you consider there were protests when it was first proposed. protests included chants of corporate egotism and stow the shaft with demonstrators in costumes. i mean, someone had to do quite a faithful representation of the tower just to walk around with it. secretly. they must have loved it. in addition to fixing up the old stuff, there are new additions in the pipeline a newly planted cherry trees now fill mark twain alley and the city has approved construction
6:17 pm
of two new adjoining office buildings that will transform this entire block. the redwood park becomes the center between all three buildings, certainly bringing in a lot of interesting businesses that are going to be bringing more people into the neighborhood. in a city that appreciates an unusual character, the pyramid stands out and up. 52 years in, it's ready for its next chapter. we're actually looking at what, the 50 years and beyond joe rosato jr, nbc, bay area news. all right, here's something fun. got your tickets yet? the excitement is building the golden state valkyries announcing today they've received 10,000 season ticket deposits. earlier this week, the team unveiled its name, logo and colors. the name comes from norse mythology. the valkyries were one greer women known for being fearless and unwavering. the team says. yes, the team says since the announcement, a couple of days ago, they've received a flurry of season
6:18 pm
ticket requests, pushing the deposits to more than 10,000 fans. among their biggest fans, steve kerr first of all, i love the name. i love the colors. i already got a sweatshirt i got, i'm getting some gear. can't wait for the team to come in. i've been to a couple of bay fc games in san jose and those games were phenomenal, i think the rise of professional women sports in this country is coming . i think you can feel it, obviously women's sports have have been popular and prominent for a long time now, but it just feels a little different now. yeah. what he says is very accurate. coach kerr making those comments during our exclusive interview with him this week. you can watch the interview. we posted it at nbcbayarea.com. okay, the valkyries are hosting a big block party at chase center this weekend. it's tomorrow from 2 to 6 on the plaza right outside.

6:21 pm
gilroy, maybe not as much for san jose. should all clear back by 11:00 in the morning, and then we'll have that sunshine through the afternoon. but notice the beaches. i will still keep that fog there. so morning temperatures tomorrow going to start it off like this down to 54 in the south bay. 50 all across the bay area, 53 in the east bay and down 250 in the north bay. daytime highs for tomorrow. dropping off a degree or two. that will just put us at 75 in san jose over to fremont, 74 up to concord, 75, peninsula 59, half moon bay, over to redwood city 70, san francisco 58. in the marina, up here to the north bay 72 in santa rosa, 76 in napa, okay. bay to breakers on sunday. going out to the big race. we've got some chilly weather to start, 50s with some morning fog, sun for the afternoon. it looks really good out there towards sunday morning. and look at this ten day forecast. we warm it up next week into some 80s. then by the following weekend we actually dip back into some low 70s. so kind of this up down back up
6:22 pm
back down again pattern. and for the inland valleys we'll go to 78 on sunday's forecast. so weekends almost here in that weather it's is coming through for us. and i've learned 78 is his favorite temperature. is it. it is a good one i mean no complaints. thanks. go with an 82. oh okay. a little a little toasty bros 81. all right, all right, all right. we're all very close. thanks, jeff. okay, okay. up next, a close call in the north bay. we're going to show you the mess made by this tree that came crashing down. no
