comfortable, upper 60s for san mateo, upper 70s for los gatos and 78 for san jose, while we'll see also mid to upper 70s for the east bay into the north bay and the weekend is looking just as nice. our saturday high temperatures up to 75. in dublin we'll get a look at the rest of our microclimates coming up. but mike, you're tracking a crash in oakland. yeah, a couple of crashes in oakland. actually, this is a major crash. and marcus is going to talk more about the details of what's going on and what caused or what the issue is earlier. but right now the grand avenue off ramp is still closed. i wanted to call it out because it is off of the maze. and we did talk about grand avenue, but it's a completely different portion of that roadway name over in oakland, a smooth drive everywhere else as you head south down through piedmont, there's another crash just past the bottom of the screen. on 880 itself, there's a rollover crash reported no major injuries, and i'm tracking that. but smaller incidents have been occurring over the last hour. so a busy night on the grid for chp right now as you head down toward the coliseum. but so far, no slowing

few hours, the man convicted of attacking paul pelosi is set to face sentencing. this marks the end of a year and a half court battle to put david depape behind bars today in the bay's ginger conejero saab joins us live in san francisco with more on what is set to play out today. ginger well, good morning, laura and marcus. prosecutors are asking for a 40 year sentence for david depape. attorneys say they want depape to serve a longer sentence than the one recommended by the u.s. probation office, which recommends 25 years in prison. depape was convicted of breaking into the pelosi home in pacific heights here in san francisco, attempting to kidnap then speaker nancy pelosi. instead, he attacked her husband, paul pelosi, in the early morning hours of october 28th, 2022, just days before the midterm elections. depape admitted during trial testimony that he broke into the home. he also acknowledged striking paul pelosi with a hammer after police showed up. that bloody
5:05 am
attack on pelosi was captured on police body cam footage. depape was convicted of the federal charges against him back in november of last year, but he is also charged in state court hearings or in state court with assault with attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon. he's also pleaded not guilty to that case. jury selection for the state case is expected to happen next week on may 22nd. and as we have been doing throughout this, we will continue to bring you developments both on air and online in both cases. marcus. laura. all right. we will follow. thank you. ginger police cleared out an abandoned university building near the uc berkeley campus. you may recall it was taken over on wednesday night by pro-palestinian protesters. police shut down nearby streets, outnumbering the group of protesters, allowing police to arrest 12 people inside that building. the takeover of the building, happening just days after a nearby encampment, was disbanded after student organizers came to an agreement on their demands

only place that's made some changes due to teenage brawls. just last year, great america also instituted a chaperon policy. let's take a live look in san francisco. and as summer gets a little closer in the city by the bay, really, for all of us, the better your chances of seeing some fog. so brace for may gray june gloom, no sky july and fog just. meteorologist kari hall explains why the city by the bay can get so gray. starting at this time of the year, we're settling into a pattern of coastal fog and cool temperatures and inland sunshine, as well as warm weather and you may well know, the cause of our microclimates are due in part to the proximity to the ocean, as well as the hilly terrain and the valleys. now, the water at our coastline flows down from alaska and is very cold, averaging only at about 55 degrees. the marine layer of humid air is pushed over the water and to our coast and creates a breezy, chilly wind with that constant pacific high pressure pushing that moist
5:10 am
air farther inland. and as temperatures in the valleys heat up, you get a wide range in temperatures. as the fog lingers for most of the day. bottom line is to always keep a warm jacket handy all throughout the summer. now let's check in with mike for a look at this morning's commute . yeah, you know we're talking about gas prices. first as we look at a smooth flow of traffic at the gas pumps at least has flowed down in prices at least a little bit. another local listed in the top ten best, but it's still in livermore. that's two in the top ten for 24. again, this one's at livermore's foxy gasoline on old first street in the city of san jose. it's national petroleum with their best price of 469 on key street. that's near spartan stadium. and then as you're going to make a getaway through the north bay, check out vallejo for 79 at vallejo's exxon on springs road. now these prices are all shared by all of you. all of us on gasbuddy.com, on the roadways. everything is looking pretty nice and a green sensors, even out of the altamont pass. for the most part. oakland does have a couple of crashes, and the one
5:11 am
we've been really tracking since just after midnight. the deadly crash 580 at grand avenue, and that's got the exit closed, but only the exit. the freeway itself getting away from the bay bridge is fine. getting to the bay bridge, we haven't really started with much slowing at all. back to you. all right. good information. thanks, mike. and oakland student admitted to more than 100 colleges is ahead on today in the bay. the obstacles he's overcome in his journey of educational excellence, which university he's choosing to attend in the fall. look all the applications right? plus, what have you spent $6,000 on? fancy new clothes, but nobody was there to enjoy them, to appreciate them. also you don't gotta take it slow. i'm a hit the gas if you're ready to go. ain't no party like a bay a party. say yeah, i said say yeah, yeah, yeah okay. thank you. all right. so look, details on that celebration set to take place for the bay area's first

today with all that sunshine and a breezy wind, it's going to be a very pleasant way to wrap up our week. we'll talk about the weekend coming up in a few minutes. look at look, look. flashing lights right here. westbound just as still visible at the top of the screen. we have a maintenance vehicle over on the right service area. we're checking the san martin. excuse me, san mateo bridge. i got so excited. i got a cough. no problems, but we'll see if we have any debris on the roadway. looks like it's on the move. we'll bring you the latest coming up. all right. well good morning. happy friday to you. the european union taking a closer look into how meta's instagram cam entices kids to use it, accusing the company of creating an addictive product. now it's early days in the accusation san francisco's reddit made a deal with chatgpt to allow its ai to use reddit's data to teach itself. the dao made history yesterday when it briefly broke through the 40,000 mark. in fact, you can watch it happening for yourself right there. nothing magic happens
5:16 am
when this happens. it's just a nice round number. and it was a new record. all indices hitting new records. a former ceo at walmart warns the company may have too many wealthy shoppers. that doesn't sound like a problem, but bill simon says with prices so high, it's seeing rich people shopping, which is artificially driving up sales, and it won't last forever. the government of china says it's going to start buying real estate, including homes and apartments, to try to prop up property prices, and there will be no floor on how low mortgage rates will go. they are obviously having the opposite problem that we're having. they have too many houses. the european patent agency just nominated this bay area company for an innovation award. laila makes 3d displays. look at that. no special glasses or equipment needed. the team are star wars fans, the name the company leia.

but that computer display looks more like jarvis from iron man. i talked to the ceo briefly at a tech conference. we had many comparisons with the science fiction over the years. that's true. or minority report or yes, exactly. it's always, wow, always 100. which makes the job really fun. the company says it creates 3d by sending different images to each eye the same way a set of stereo headphones and different sounds to each year. with all the ai talk, we've been sort of ignoring that previous trendy thing, the metaverse. apparently, some people paid thousands of dollars to dolce and gabbana for special clothes to wear in the universe. here are a few examples from dmg's web site. now, bloomberg says some of those buyers have filed suit in federal court, saying the company didn't deliver the virtual outfits on time, and there weren't many people in the metaverse to show them off to. so the customers think they were overcharged when they spent 6000. what dollar was like
5:18 am
actual real dollars, like money dollars? no. i remember when all that was happening. i was thinking, what are people doing? you know, people seamstress in east san jose that could do that with actual clothing. right i know a graphic artist who could whip that up. heck, you could do that in i a couple of minutes. yeah, yeah. well, you know, to each his own. but, you know, that's that's weird. that's an interesting lawsuit. it's an interesting lawsuit. thanks god. hey happening tomorrow, the valkyries will be celebrating with fans, the team throwing a block party at thrive city to get fans excited for the wnba coming to the bay area. the event will include appearances from e-40, kehlani, p-lo and others, and space is limited and it's also first come, first serve. it starts at 2 p.m. well trending this morning for more high school seniors getting into the college they most desire. really far from certain. that's what makes this east bay student story really so amazing. you know what he's being wooed by
5:19 am
more than 100 universities with most offering some big money and scholarships. 18 year old gosh, i'm like, running out of words like like, i feel really lucky that. okay, so you're looking right now that's 18 year old hams at the gecko. he is from head-royce school over in oakland. he was accepted. get this to 122 universities, is offering a collective $5.3 million in scholarships. that acceptance comes after years of hard work you can imagine, including a 3.9 gpa, some ten extra school curriculars, and spending months of applying to schools all over. listen to him right there. oh, he sings too. yeah, okay. nothing if i don't have you. wow. yes, yes. so angelic. the reason i wanted you to hear that. because he is an aspiring singer. he actually
5:20 am
moved to the united states from uganda only just five years ago. applying to all those extra schools. he said he wanted to apply to as many as he could, and he's going to choose the one with the best, program for music. take a listen. and i wanted to make sure that i was applying to somewhere i would be really happy to go to, but having applied to so many, i made sure to care enough. of course, and put in the time and the work to get that application down, but also sort of detach myself so that i don't get disappointed. so ultimately, he's committed to attending uc berkeley in the fall because of its music program and, of course, diversity and other courses. the college bound singer hopes to one day become an r&b pop recording artist. i like the spirit. there's something about him that's great. good for him. congratulations. yeah, it feels like that energy, though, right? yeah. whatever he's choosing to do and he could probably choose a lot of things good for him. he's got look, you can go. his voice and everything. he'll be fine. watch his star soar. yeah. very cool. you saw him here
5:21 am
first. remember that? awesome. all right, well, that's a great way to start out a friday. it's college acceptance season. it's graduation season. it is all of that wrapped into sunshine for a lot of us. and some beautiful weather. so at least that part we don't have to worry about as we're planning all of these celebrations going on. but we do have the may gray that continues along the coastline. we talked about that as well as some mild temperatures, so that's helping to moderate all of our temperatures across the bay area. it does stay dry with some seasonable temperatures, and ahead it will stay cool. so as you're heading out, going to work in oakland, it's going to be in the low 50s throughout the morning. and then take a look at the trend. it stays mostly cloudy through at least 11 12:00. and then we start to see the sun breaking out. so low clouds and drizzle from san francisco extending across the bay into the east bay. at noon. we're seeing those temperatures starting to warm up for some spots, like san jose, we're at a nice 71 degrees, but we are heating up. and farther to the
5:22 am
north in lake mendocino counties. we're going to see temperatures in the mid 80s there, but mostly 70s as we get that influence from that cool ocean breeze. looking at our game tonight for the giants it's going to be chilly out there. windy cool temperatures in the 50s. and at times you may even feel some mist and drizzle hitting your face. it's going to be cool, so you might want to watch it on tv, but definitely warmer for the bay fc game tonight. we start out with the low 70s and then drop back to the low 60s, and also a lot going on this weekend along the coastline is going to be in the upper 50s for highs in santa cruz, a little bit warmer on sunday, and overall we're looking at more of the same weather on repeat going from the weekend into early next week. mid 70s inland and mid 60s for san francisco. and mike, you're looking at the san mateo bridge following up because we had the far right lane here with the service vehicle flashing lights. and it actually stopped just about right here for a couple of
5:23 am
minutes. it started to slowly make its way across the bridge, and we can see topsy continuing the lights across the high rise, so everything looks like it's moving smoothly. once again, it wasn't causing enough of a delay to show up on our sensor. so smooth. east bay over to the peninsula. it would be the direction for the main commute, but which got no slowing really going on. we do have a couple of crashes west grand or grand avenue off ramp from eastbound 580. it just reopened, folks. there was a deadly crash just after midnight. 580 at grand just reopened. we still have a crash near davis north. 880 rollover crash, but no lanes closed on the freeway from what i understand. back to you. all right. good to know. thanks, mike. coming up next on today in the bay. nbc bay area response. she says a company denied her service but charged her a couple hundred bucks. anyway, i'm consumer investigator chris chmura, nbc bay area responds next on today in the bay. hey. and as we head to break, a reminder for you, the giants take on the rockies tonight. you don't want to miss that. this is the start of a three game series over at oracle pk. you can

5:27 am
kept calling the company to fix the error, but nothing worked. then the company sent her account to collections, so she contacted us. we contacted the company. it then corrected the error. but laura is not done. now she needs to check her credit report to make sure the cell company's mistake is not on there, and dragging down her credit score. we should all check our credit reports from time to time, and we made a how to video showing you the steps to do that. each week for free. you can find that video in all of our other how to videos on our website and our youtube page. just look for the how to playlist. have a great weekend! you too! well, next, here's the top stories we're following on today in the bay, including a party with a purpose. the night make the night market, bringing hundreds to downtown san jose, and why leaders hope that it has a lasting impact. i'm kris sanchez in berkeley, where it's all quiet right now. after protesters were arrested from

school with new details on the charges and the promise made by activists and we're looking ahead to the weekend on sunday to bay bakers returning. hey, you can't miss the features you should look for in the bay area's craziest race. and what to wear weather wise. this is today in the bay some kind of furry outfit. look, whatever makes you rock. good morning to you. on this friday, i'm marcus washington, and i'm laura garcia. welcome to friday. first we begin with some breaking news though. have you heard what's happening in texas? sadly, at least four people have died after severe storms swept through the houston area overnight at times, winds exceeded 100mph. it toppled trees, leading to at least some of those deaths. nearly 1 million homes and businesses are now without power. meteorologist kari hall is here right now. carol was just talking to a friend over in houston yesterday, saying it was raining
5:32 am
pretty much all day. where's the storm heading now? well, it has moved off to the east and yeah, they had so much rainfall that came on top of an already saturated ground. so then when you add in wind speeds of 100mph, that caused a lot of trees to topple. and the bad thing about this is that we're still seeing storms developing and another round of storms will be coming through that area for today. a closer look around houston and the storms that are approaching. we are going to continue to see that heavy rain moving in as we go throughout the day, and they may see another 2 to 5in of rainfall, along with that threat of more severe storms. so we'll continue to monitor that as we go throughout the next several hours. we're starting out with a heavy drizzle over san francisco, and we're going to see that continue with a mostly cloudy morning into the early afternoon that also keeps those temperatures down. and we're only looking at highs in the low 60s. we'll talk about some weekend events, and there are a lot of them going on. so also how the weather will affect some of those events coming up in a
5:33 am
few minutes. sounds good. we'll check back with you. 532 right now, some pro-palestinian protesters are facing charges after they were arrested for illegally taking over a building owned by uc berkeley. yeah. today in the base. kris sanchez joining us live from berkeley this morning. and kris, this was a pretty tense ending. it was a very tense ending. it is very quiet now, but there is a large security presence. they are stationed all about the building here that is behind me. i want to show you what it was like last night as it was all unfolding just hours after, within 24 hours of those protesters taking over that abandoned building owned by uc berkeley, berkeley police and other agencies shut down the streets nearby in order to move in and arrest 12 protesters. those protesters now face charges of trespassing, vandalism and destruction of property, according to the university. it does not appear they are affiliated with the on campus protest, which disbanded a few days ago after the student protesters and uc berkeley officials reached an agreement.
5:34 am
we talked with the berkeley man who lives nearby, who says he doesn't think that this is over. i think people are just the pro-palestinian protesters are just fed up at this point after for that many months. so they really want to just go all out. so it's just going to be might be a chaotic summer. he may be right because as those protesters were being detained, they were chanting, we will be back, we will be back. so if they come back, you know that we will cover that as well. at uc berkeley. kris sanchez today in the bay. all right. thank you very much, chris. well, at least a few people in the south bay likely starting the weekend a little early. aguilar yeah, this is over in san jose was last night kicking off its downtown summer block party series. that event happening in fountain alley, connecting first and second streets and included live music, food, art merchants selling their items. of course, you can see here. so organizers
5:35 am
say the goal here is really to bring more foot traffic to that area. the mayor says that this year's events are off to a good start. we're creating exposure for the small businesses. we have incredible entrepreneurs, incredible diversity of restaurants and bars and cultural venues. now, san jose's downtown association says the city showing new signs of life with activity up to 20% and block parties will take place throughout the summer in different parts of the downtown area. well good news if you're planning a getaway down the coast this weekend, all of highway one through big sur will open again in about an hour after storms in late march. you may recall triggered slides and forced closures lasting weeks. the reopening also comes a little early, more than one week sooner than initial projections. for the past two months, locals were relying on convoys twice a day to get in and out of the area. be aware if you're heading further south. an unrelated closure in the town of lucia remains intact, with no reopening date set just yet. all
5:36 am
right, laura, lace up your running shoes and grab your best costume. because you know what san francisco is holding its annual bay to breakers race this sunday. that's a seven mile course beginning near the ferry building in the financial district. and it's going to end over in ocean beach. race coordinator kyle myers actually points out that runners have all kinds of ways to take part. we've got our elite race up front, our centipede division, which is 13 runners tied together, new for this year, is the relay two person relay. and we also have the braided breakers bonus, which is an extra three k, on the great highway virtual. and then, what's not on here is we also have a corporate teams, division as well. now there are some road closures need to be aware of, including the finish line that starts today. closures near the starting line start tomorrow. i'm sorry. that's. yeah. tomorrow at 7 p.m. all other race related closures take effect 6 a.m. on sunday. want to check in with meteorologist kari hall? because the thing about it
5:37 am
is, you know, folks like to dress up. yes. do we need to have another layer of clothing or just whatever you want? i think it's whatever you want, whatever makes you comfortable. but just a heads up that it will be chilly. we start out with the temperature only at about 54 degrees, and we know that it's usually foggy misting. so if you're wearing something like that pink gorilla costume, it gets weighed down with all of the drizzle and the you know, humidity in the air along with your sweat as well. but, you know, such a great event and it kicks off our summer, even though it does not at all feel like summer. we only make it into the low 60s throughout the race and into the day. now, if you want some warmer temperatures, head to antioch. the contra costa county fair will continue throughout the weekend. we'll see a high of about 80 for today. upper 70s for saturday. but just as fast as it warms up, it cools down. we go from upper 70s to low 50s, and on sunday we're going to see a high temperature of about 81 degrees. we also have the boogie
5:38 am
music festival in downtown campbell. both saturday and sunday. the weather is looking about the same each day, starting out at about 63 degrees, at 72 degrees at 1:00. and in the mid 70s during the middle of the day, and also sunny for the himalayan fair in berkeley. we're going to see a cool and at times cloudy start. but then as we go throughout the day, the celebrations continue. we make a high of about 65 degrees, so it will be really nice. and then today we've got the night market at the alameda county fairgrounds. it's going to be 73 at the time that it begins, but then temperatures dropping down into the upper 50s as we really make it to a night market. mike, you've got a lot ahead of us as well. yeah, in fact a lot more now. the traffic incident just popped up a pretty big issue for northbound 680, mostly green on all of the bay area freeways except north 680. we just learned that basically all lanes are blocked just north of mission. as you're heading up in toward the sunol area, so avoid that portion. we already
5:39 am
saw a little slowing show up on mission. the cut over that state route 262, and folks are getting over to 880 and taken back up through fremont. and then eventually, perhaps cut back over. this is right around auto mall parkway. so it is north of the major cut overs. but auto mall is a great option as well. again, north 680 with a crash with debris and roadway closures there. now looking ahead to this weekend, we will have lane closures. there will be one lane open here. south 680 from al costa to 580 that dublin interchange because there's one lane open people are probably going to minimize the impact. but there's only one lane for this freeway. that's a big issue if you're traveling south out of san ramon, danville, even walnut creek. so take note. folks may have to shift over to 24 and take 580 back down through the area as well. that's a possible reroute. make sure you use your mapping software because it will tell you what things are like at any given moment. we have another closure. this one's a full closure. eastbound 37. just like last weekend. that's closed from 121 over to 29 and mare island. so there's your reroute
5:40 am
