protesters. nbc bay area's jodi hernandez reports from campus. i think that they worked really hard on their demands and that they had really meaningful conversations with the president. student journalist olivia keeler describes the process she observed between student protesters and university president mike lee. we realized that we, the students, had been camped out at sonoma statesperson lawn since april 26th. but on monday, lee announced he reached an agreement with the protesters, pledging to seek divestment strategies and exchanges and other collaborations with israeli academic and research institutions, and call for a cease fire. they just felt like, wow, we really might get things done here. a bunch of them mentioned, like, i've been crying all day, things like that. but the protesters celebrations came to an abrupt end yesterday when the csu chancellor placed lee on leave. chancellor mildred garcia says

lee's announcement was sent without the appropriate approval . because of this insubordination and consequences it has brought upon the system, president lee has been placed on administrative leave. we were just kind of blindsided by it. sonoma state professor alexis boutin says the faculty was left in the dark about lee's negotiations with protesters. she says she's troubled by some of the points of his agreement, especially the academic boycott. that one is concerning because we do have this holocaust and genocide lecture series. we have a robust jewish studies program, and we have other subject matter experts on campus who do interface with scholars from israel and israeli institutions. lee has acknowledged he made a mistake. in a statement, he said, in my attempt to find agreement with one group of students, i marginalized other members of our student population and community. i realize the harm that this has caused and take full ownership of it. i deeply regret the unintended consequences of my

actions. boutin says jewish students tell her they're scared and upset by it all, but she believes lee should be given another chance. i think there's a lot of repair work that needs to be done on our campus, and i hope that president lee can come back and facilitate that, and i hope that we can have some more open and safe dialogs about it in the fall. this morning, the university removed messages of support for lee, written in chalk on the campus sidewalk. no word yet on if any of the agreement will actually stick in santa rosa. jodi hernandez, nbc, bay area news. in berkeley, pro-palestinian protesters are occupying a dilapidated uc berkeley hall. meantime, uc academic workers across the state have authorized a strike. they did that today. they say it's in the response to the way universities have cracked down on pro-palestinian protests. these past few weeks. this comes from a uaw local post on social media. it includes teaching assistant and student researchers and tutors in the

post, the union says the university is using intimidation and retaliation against protesters, and it is demanding among other things, amnesty for all students and faculty arrested or facing disciplinary action. it is unclear when these strikes will happen. the uc president's office says such a strike would set a dangerous precedent by introducing non-labour issues into labor agreements. the statement goes on to say, quote, to be clear, the uc understands and embraces its role as a forum for free speech, lawful protest and public debate. however, given that role, these non-labor related disputes cannot prevent it from fulfilling its academic mission. better housing may be on the way. the half moon bay planning commission has approved housing for senior farm workers after governor newsom threatened legal action. it comes after a deadly mass shooting at two farms last year, which left seven people dead. the tragedy uncovered the poor living

conditions for farm workers. in response, the city proposed building a 40 unit complex for senior farm workers. commissioners voted to approve the project last night, and now goes to the city council for a vote. the federal government is one step closer to easing restrictions on marijuana. president biden says he is asking the department of justice to switch cannabis from schedule one drug down to a schedule three. that doesn't decriminalize it, but it clears the way for medical research. schedule one drugs are defined as drugs with no currently accepted medical use and a high potential for abuse. schedule three drugs are considered to have a low to moderate risk of abuse. still, a few more steps to go before the dea issues an order to reschedule the drug. the entire process will take a few months. al i now foe michael cohen, the fixer turned felon, turned prosecution witness on the stand for hours once again today in the hush money trial of former president trump. the

defense trying to discredit cohen's credibility. nbc's alice barr has more from washington. in their second day of cross-examination, defense lawyers for former president trump on a mission to discredit the prosecution's central witness, michael cohen, mr. trump's one time lawyer and fixer. the trump team grilling cohen over his criminal record, his bias against the former president and his past admissions of lying under oath, seeking to show his critical testimony cannot be trusted. testimony that ties together documents and witnesses and puts former president trump at the heart of a scheme to silence adult film star stormy daniels about an alleged affair in the final days of the 2016 campaign, and then illegally hide cohen's reimbursement for the hush money payments. all allegations the former president denies. there is no case. there's no crime. it's a disgrace that it was

allowed to happen in sometimes heated questioning, the defense lawyer todd blanch, tried to poke holes in cohen's recollections of conversations with mr. trump about the alleged hush money scheme. blanch asserting over and over that was a lie. at one point, cohen said, quote, i believe i spoke to mr. trump about the stormy daniels matter during one key phone call. blanch shooting back, quote, we are not asking for your belief. this jury does not want to hear what you think happened. the defense also played clips from cohen's podcast expressing his deep desire to see mr. trump go to prison. but revenge is a dish best served cold, and you better believe i want this man to go down and rot inside for what he did to me and my family. as the jury weighs cohen's credibility, more republican lawmakers watching on pledging support for their party's presidential candidate. this court is not in session tomorrow so that former president trump can attend his

son barron's high school graduation. they'll be back on monday. as we near the finish line in this historic trial in washington. alice barr, nbc news. president biden is blocking it. the release of an audio from an interview that was part of the investigation into his handling of classified documents. in a letter made public today, the white house said the president will exert executive privilege over the recording of his interview with special counsel robert herb. the republican federal prosecutor declined to recommend charges against president biden in this case, but he did write in the report that the president could portray himself to a jury as a, quote, elderly man with a poor memory. house republicans are criticizing the use of executive privilege, including house speaker mike johnson, who said biden is afraid of the political fallout from that audio being released. president biden's decision comes after attorney general merrick garland recommended that he assert executive privilege. if you have

triple a home insurance, get ready for your rates to increase . last friday, the california department of insurance approved an average rate hike for northern california, triple a customers of just under 7, though some could see their rates increase as much as 23, while a small amount will see rates decline, those rate changes will start at their next renewal date on or after august 1st. triple a is also dropping some 5500 policies due to wildfire risk. travelers insurance, safeco and state farm are also raising rates up to 20% in the south bay. it is a scene right out of the pandemic, but it happened today. a line of cars waiting to get a free food box from a local charity in silicon valley, one of the wealthiest parts of the country. nbc bay area's damian trujillo has the crossroads calvary chapel in san jose, which is seeing this growing need. volunteers here say the economic rebound we're seeing across the

country isn't really hitting everybody know here. it's people wondering what they're going to eat from one day to the next. the line of cars stretched for three blocks, winding around a neighborhood that has seen the need increase in recent months from one month or one week to the next. it just seems to grow. volunteers say this is the case every thursday as the crossroads calvary chapel on south capitol avenue struggles to fill the need. porque todo todo esta muy caro renta comida villas. maria, who didn't want to give her last name, says times are hard because everything has gone up from food to rent to household bills. the chapel used to feed about 80 families per week. thank you. but since covid, the number has been increasing. now up to 650 families. macy porque es mucho ayuda para muchas familias. dina rendon says the weekly food boxes are a big help for her family, even though the boxes aren't quite as full now.

volunteers say they used to hand out a whole chicken with eggs and milk every week. now they have to alternate the items because the donations aren't as bountiful. today's long line coincided with the stock market hitting some record numbers, a milestone not lost across town at sacred heart community services. i really think it highlights how success for some is not success for all. and so we know that there are folks within, within this economy that are doing quite well within this valley that are doing quite well. but here at sacred heart, we're seeing 700 plus families come per day, families who need housing and help with food in the valley where the long lines seem to have no end in san jose. damian trujillo, nbc, bay area news. thank you damian. well, as he mentioned, wall street reached a big benchmark, with the dow briefly topping 40,000 for the first time ever. it ended the day down, though, 38 points to 39.8 69. the nasdaq dropped 44 and the s&p dropped 11, coming up at 530. our

in berkeley. it's all because of ab 1033, authored by assembly member phil ting. it took effect at the beginning of this year. it allows cities to let people

sell 80 used as condos separate from their primary homes. on tuesday, the city council told city staff to draft an ordinance authorizing the sales. now, according to the bay area council. berkeley appears to be the first city in the state to opt into ab 1033. getting into your top college can be hard, but how about getting accepted into more than 120 universities? one oakland high school senior is raking in those acceptance letters and scholarships. nbc bay area's velena jones sat down with the scholar student and shares how he did it and where he is going in the fall. is this fun? this is, what, 122 university acceptance letters look like. the letters represent months of applying to colleges all over the country. years of hard work and $5.3 million in collective scholarship offered to 18 year old helms at a

head-royce high school senior. i feel really lucky that i that there's people out there and there's institutions out there that sort of see the value that i have to give. helms believes it was his nearly ten extracurriculars, spanning from choir to theater to starting his own club, along with his 3.9 gpa that set him apart on paper. for him, his dedication to school is borne out of his passion for his family and lessons from his upbringing in uganda. the college bound singer just moved to the states five years ago. i just really had to remind myself that this is an opportunity, especially where i'm from, that a lot of people don't have, and i wanted to be grateful for that. and honor my parents stay in my arms if you dare. an aspiring pop and r&b recording artist, it's really just what makes me come alive. helms applied to nearly 160 schools total to find the best program possible, but never picked a top

choice out of fear of disappointment, adding the pros, subtracting the cons, and factoring in financial aid. the equation led him to select uc berkeley. that's why i ultimately decided on cal, because i was like, music fantastic location. fantastic. now let's look at everything else and he'll be going to his dad's alma mater. it's a proud moment for his father, who spent years working with immigration, trying to get homes into america. all the things that i and my family have had to go through to, to be here, sometimes there's like these moments where you have to, like, pinch yourself. is this happening or is this a dream? kris says it's his son's undeniable passion for music, hard work mixed in with some luck and a higher power that makes him shine. he has found a thing, and that thing is music that is bringing out so much joy that it is infectious. one step closer to singing on the big

stage, helms is excited to carve out his own legacy one note at a time. now phelan avenue in oakland, velena jones nbc, bay area news. that's fantastic. congratulations to him. and that's that's so happy going to his alma mater. staying close to home. it really is. he's a man of many talents. sounds amazing. no auto-tune, no nothing. that's real right there on the spot for sure. it's good that he's staying in the bay area. we've had some fantastic weather this week, but by the coast? yeah we've got that fog. it's going to linger not just through tonight, but really into the weekend. and this is the thing. so if you're going to be out and about early in the morning, you might even catch some drizzle around the coastline. and we do have some cooling already underway, especially more noticeable in inland areas. let's get a live look right now throughout the bay area. at some of our cameras, notice the temperatures there 74 in san jose. we do have a light breeze from the north northwest at about 14mph. oakland 64. in through walnut creek 68. and in

san francisco 67 degrees. a light breeze now breeze will also be a factor not only into tonight, but also leading us into the weekend as well. and i'll help you plan that out in a second. now i want to show you how that marine layer looks on satellite radar. you can see right here just how far down it hugs that coastline stretching down through salinas, but also all the way up through far north bay as well. now the thing with this layer of fog is it's going to linger around the coastline through tonight. you notice that green that pops up there that is a chance for some drizzle. if you're following the timestamp right up here at about 3 a.m. so that really early morning commute, you can see just how far inland that fog will extend. and we're talking about stretching it through danville, fremont, down through san jose and the gilroy stretch as well. this is going to mean limited visibility into the early morning commute hours. so please be careful. we could be seeing less than five miles in through that stretch. now this is looking at about 11 a.m. notice inland. we get some clearing, but we do still have some fog

hanging out, not only in the coastline, also stretching down through gilroy as well. so slower to clear there temperature wise for tomorrow. expect to see 60s for the city and the peninsula. we do still have some upper 70s in through inland areas like concord, stretching down through san jose and in through fremont. 75 meanwhile, leading us into your saturday. similar conditions as well. but we're going to max out in those mid 70s in through saturday and sunday. so the setup temperature wise is quite lovely if you're wondering about that wind. well we've had some breezy winds kind of kicking up from the north northwest. and notice this is at about 5:00. but if you notice in the index right up there the color, cuz you can see the green and the yellow picking up intensity in the orange area. so we're talking fairfield, concord in through danville. and then if i kind of push this temps forward until about sunday, you'll notice it picks up a little bit more around the coastline and in through parts of the south bay. the impacts for that you're going to notice the breeziness. but at least we're going to stay dry. dry weather will continue into your saturday forecast into your sunday forecast. and then it does look like that stretch

of nice quiet weather extends into the week. and then we get a bit of cooling saturday and sunday. but notice monday, tuesday we bump back up into the 80s. by monday and tuesday we're also monitoring a cold front that's going to make its approach not expected to bring any, you know, rain or huge temperature drops, but it will definitely kick up the wind and we'll monitor that into saturday and sunday. okay maybe it'll blow the pollen out of here. i hope so, or just yes, miserable. thanks, danny. well, up next, how early is too early for anti-aging skincare? california lawmakers are now proposing a bill that would ban those products for a certain age group. we'll explain

a proposed bill would ban selling certain anti-aging skin care products to children younger than 13 years old. there's concern young children should not be exposed to specific ingredients, such as vitamin a and alpha hydroxy acids, which are typically intended for adults with more mature skin concerns. the bill would also require businesses to take steps to prevent children from buying those products. any business that does not comply could be liable for a civil penalty. up to $10,000 a day. the legislation passed the environmental safety and toxic materials committee back in april. a hearing to discuss this bill was held today. the house is cracking down on those ticket fees, passing a new bill called the ticket act. it would require sellers to list the total cost of a ticket, including those fees, and would also require sellers to provide refunds if an event is canceled. the now bill moves to the senate. senators have also authored several similar bills. pay to play. that

could be the new rule in san francisco when it comes to playing pickleball and tennis. the san francisco recreation and parks department came up with the plan in response to a surge in demand for those courts. the city wants to crack down on players who overbook and misuse the courts. so the parks commission voted yes on a $5 reservation fee today. it still needs to go through the board of supervisors for final approval. and the new fee will be charged at 28 of the 66 courts across the city. the rest will be first come, first serve. coming up, our tacos and burritos sandwiches. a judge in one state is making the final call. we'll tell you about the ruling next
