buildings near the lecture hall are on lockdown. no classes are in session right now. as you can see there, there's people marching. there's also a phalanx of police. we're going to keep a close eye on ■this and we'll bring you more information and take you back here as this story develops. some resolutions at sf state were pro-palestinian. protesters have been camped out for a couple of weeks. they say they've won a partial victory in their fight to get the school to divest from israel. and that means their encampments will start coming down, but not all at once. nbc bay area's robert honda joins us from that campus to tell us what happened and what's going to happen next. organizers of the protests here at san francisco state university, symbolized by the encampment called the concessions a partial victory because there are still issues to be resolved here and on other campuses. the tense atmosphere at san francisco state university that began two weeks ago, when pro-palestinian groups set up this encampment, broke out into more of a celebration

today after the university agreed to some concessions. can i get a free, free palestine? students and supporters rallied in malcolm x plaza today after university president lynn mahoney committed to forming a work group, including students, to create a website to show investment strategies and to draft revisions to align with social and racial justice. we have received a commitment to divest from weapons manufacturing to disclose clear accounts of where sfsu is investing its money, and to publicly defend our right to protest. we will continue to organize for further commitments beyond this, the protesters say they will remove the encampment in stages, depending on progress on the concessions. we want people to see the work that we're doing, the way that we've negotiated this, so that other schools, whether they're part of the csu system or not, can model the work that we are doing. numerous jewish groups have issued public statements criticizing the negotiations and any concessions, including divestments, at san jose state university, protesters declined to go on camera or comment on
5:02 pm
the sfsu situation, but university officials say they're encouraged. what it tells us is there's an opportunity for dialog, which we are seeking with the students that are protesting here at san jose state. we're looking for opportunities to talk with them, to talk about the concerns that they've raised. organizers here say they will be reaching out to other protest groups at other colleges to try to get them to meet and mass at a csu board of trustees meeting. their goal is to try to get the same concessions systemwide at san francisco state. robert honda, nbc, bay area news many protesters have packed up their tents and moved to merced as the uc board of regents meets there this week, students demonstrated on the uc merced campus and inside the regents board meeting, they repeated their demands for universities to cut ties with israel and allow protests to continue peacefully. regents heard from activists who spoke out against the use of police force to clear out their encampments. today's demonstrations were peaceful.

israeli troops are moving deeper into gaza. this comes as the people of gaza are dealing with a shortage of food and aid. it's been going on now for months. help is on the way, though, in the form of a floating dock. us military is towing this dock from an israeli port. it will arrive at a beach in gaza tomorrow. will serve as a loading zone. israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu says he supports us efforts to bring aid to gaza, but that he has committed to protecting israel and destroying hamas. i appreciate the help we receive from the united states from the beginning of the war. president biden came here. he sent also these battle carrier groups, and we got weapons. yes, we do have a disagreement on gaza and rather on rafah, but we have to do what we have to do. the dock has been in the works for two months now. it's cost the biden administration $320 million. now, we invite you to join us tonight at seven. raj mathai, speaking with the brother of a bay area doctor still trapped in gaza. what he can tell us about

his sister's condition and when he expects her to come home. we are following a developing story out of uc berkeley right now. some protesters broke into an abandoned university building next to people's park. these protesters are rallying against the construction going on around people's park as today, as the 55th anniversary of that park, uc berkeley says this group is not part of the pro-palestinian movement that's going on on campus. police are asking people to stay away from this area. the data set the recall election for alameda county district attorney pamela price will be on the november ballot today. the da fired back and says she is focused on doing her job. nbc bay area's velena jones has more from oakland. protect the win as da pamela price and her supporters get ready to head back on the campaign trail, they're praising the board of supervisors for not approving a separate recall. special election. this is a victory for
5:05 pm
the people of alameda county. this is a win for democracy fighting back against critics who say she's soft on crime, price claims her office has actually prosecuted people at a higher rate than her predecessor. the district attorney is also blasting recall organizers, claiming their efforts are fueled by misinformation and being bankrolled by big money opponents. they are essentially making things up without any kind of foundation or any understanding actually, of how prosecution works. she has to face this recall election. one thing i have to say stop using our tax dollars and using your office hours and campaigning. carl chan, one of the recall organizers, is calling the election date a significant milestone in his group's efforts to advocate for public safety and accountability. so you got elected. absolutely. we agree. okay. but when you're not doing

a good job, you know, performing as a da, as a capacity, okay? and also, you know, she is the reason the driving force to having all these additional serious crimes. in an ex post last week, congressman eric swalwell is also weighing in referring to a robbery of a postal worker. swalwell claims soft on crime alameda county prosecutors have given the bad guys a green light to hurt people. price rejects those comments, pointing out crimes against postal workers started long before she was in office, and prosecuting them falls under federal jurisdiction. why is he attacking the alameda county district attorney's office and holding us to a different standard than he did my predecessor? as both campaigns prepare for the november election and urge voters to turn out, november is going to be the people speaking the truth about who they want to be, the da price says. the fight to keep

those with student loans. the biden administration is giving borrowers more time to meet a key deadline. we're talking about biden's account adjustment program. borrowers now have until june 30th to make their request, and in order to qualify, you have to request a loan consolidation. if this is done by the new deadline, borrowers will get a one time adjustment on their payment and the government may soon cancel or even forgive their debt. president biden and former president trump have now agreed to two debates. word of the highly anticipated face off comes as former president trump's legal troubles have him tied up in court, and a new economic report is renewing scrutiny of president biden's fiscal policies. nbc's alice barr has the latest. someday, you're going to have to explain why the stage is set for a long awaited showdown between president biden and former president trump, both candidates agreeing to two debates on june 27th and september 10th. the details rolling out within hours
5:09 pm
of president biden issuing this challenge. donald trump lost two debates to me in 2020, and since then, he hasn't shown up for debate. now he's acting like he wants to debate me again or make my day pal. mr. trump, who has repeatedly said he would debate any time, anywhere, quickly agreed to the debates, adding let's get ready to rumble and saying on the hugh hewitt show, i really think he has to debate. he might as well get it over with. probably should do it early so that he can, you know, he's not going to get any better . oh, that's. but june in september is great. a down factor for him. in a break from tradition, the candidates going around the commission on presidential debates to instead face off with no live audience in a tv studio. first up, cnn. i think we're in such a momentous moment, and i think these are two there's questions about both of these candidates capabilities. the first debate set to come in the wake of former president trump's ongoing new york hush money trial, a chance for a massive audience to

hear him directly address whatever the outcome may be. but while the former president's legal troubles loom, voters in several recent polls rank him higher on the critical issue of the economy, president biden saying today, quote, fighting inflation and lowering costs is my top economic priority. as a new report showed inflation easing slightly in april. though consumer prices are still stubbornly high, up 3.4% from last year. the biden campaign says it wants to cut out some of the chaos of the past debates, and be sure the american people can hear clearly where each of these men stands. so these will be one on one matchups with no third party candidates, and microphones can be cut off if one of the candidates runs over his allotted time in washington. alice barr, nbc news. still ahead, silicon valley is a leader in the electric car business. that's why one major

cars, and our business and tech reporter scott budman spoke to the ceo and took a ride in a new ev. a test drive. how was it, scott? not bad. you know, i'm a big fan. janelle. we've talked about this gm, the latest car company, and we've seen many from detroit to plug in here in silicon valley, which makes sense because its newest cars are all about tech and all about going electric. it feels like a tech startup with a lot of cars inside, specifically evs, because general motors opened
5:14 pm
this 50 zero zero zero square foot facility with technology in mind, we recognize we needed to grow our base here to really be able to move as quickly as we want to move. gm ceo mary barra made the trip from motown to mountain view, telling us local talent is needed when building connected, clean cars. how important is this place to general motors? well, i think it's vitally important because when you look at, you know, what's happening in every industry, technology is changing it and enabling it. gm is in the process of replacing gas with electricity. this is the new hummer all electric, a smooth ride. also going electric. the oakland school district today announcing that all of its busses are now evs using electricity, then sending it back to the grid after school when these busses are not used in transportation, which also
5:15 pm
happens to be the peak demand for energy in the evenings and summers, these busses will be plugged into our platform to provide energy back to the grid. the bay area is getting known for this, which is why a 115 year old company wants in on the modern action. so we think there's a huge opportunity in the software and services space, as well as improving the profitability of evs. as we continue to work on battery technology, it's nice to see the ceo and silicon valley. you know, tesla has a manufacturing plant in fremont. gm considering that at all. and are they hiring right now? probably not. and it's interesting. they do have some at that very same plant history there. but so far what they're doing here is all about tech janelle. they say they want to develop battery technology. they want to get more cell phones in cars. they want to get more evs. obviously, if you think about most modern cars, they're kind of like rolling smartphones. gm knows that. and so they're hiring a lot of people here in that start up
5:16 pm
looking building in mountain view to say, let's make these cars as techie as possible, and they're coming here to do it. okay. thank you scott. you bet. jessica. boeing is facing scrutiny again, this time with the department of justice for violating a deal. it stems from a 2021 agreement between boeing and the doj. at the time, boeing was dealing with backlash from two separate 737 max plane crashes, 1 in 2018, in indonesia, the other in 2019. in ethiopia, where nearly 350 people died. the agreement protected boeing from charges related to those crashes. in exchange, boeing was required to fix many of its safety practices. now, the justice department is accusing boeing of failing to comply with us laws and not implementing safety procedures as required. the doj says boeing could now face prosecution. inflation eased a bit last month, giving us consumers a little relief from rising prices. the new consumer price index showed an increase of 0.3% in march. that's slightly below the dow jones estimate of 0.4% overall, while
5:17 pm
inflation is still up 3.4% from a year ago. but so-called core inflation is now at its lowest point since april of 2021. record setting day on wall street. the dow jones industrial average jumped 349 points, beating its all time high set back in march. meanwhile, the nasdaq went up 231 points. the s&p 500 rose 61, which breaks its record that was set just over a month ago. okay, let's talk about our weather. another beautiful day outside in the bay area. we've settled nicely into a calmer weather pattern, the marine layer. pretty typical for this time of year. even our temperatures are near average right now, so not too bad. i think we have no more excuses left. as far as car washing, i have not done that in at least three months, so my car is definitely going to get a washing this week. now, we do expect to see a light breeze as well. and around the coastline we're talking marine layer. i mean it's still hanging out tough right now and it's going to continue into tomorrow. look at san francisco. it's about 60 degrees. the average high for
5:18 pm
today is 64. so we are definitely seeing a nice pattern here spreading out through walnut creek 79 degrees. notice much better clearing in inland areas. pretty typical around an average high for today around 77. so we're not too far off. also that breeze from the northwest we're looking at about 18 to 20mph. that is also set to continue into tomorrow if you're a little bit further down through the south san jose right now is about 74. in the average high for today is 74. the breeze will pick up just a bit, and i'll give you a reason why. so we've got satellite radar right now. if you notice zoomed out we do still have some lightning activity. further down to the south over mammoth lakes. that system that impacted the sierra sparking some thunderstorm activity, is now cleared out. we're going to get a calmer weather pattern as well for the sierra for now, but then things will change heading into saturday as well. so you can see here we've still got some rain lighting up there in through mammoth lakes. but for us here, it's mainly the coastline that's going to see some drizzle heading into the overnight early morning hours for your thursday. you'll notice it right here.
5:19 pm
time stamp at around 6:37 a.m. this could cause some concern for some low visibility, especially not only around the coastline, but up through parts of santa rosa. notice in through the interior stretching in through oakland, and then it will probably stretch down through danville and parts of fremont and san jose as well. so keep that in mind if you do have to be out and about early in the morning. limited visibility could be a factor. wind speeds by tomorrow evening we're talking seven 8:00. so right around your evening hour we're going to see the winds picking up from the northwest. once again, especially through interior areas. concord livermore, oakland. we're going to be seeing 20 plus miles per hour in those higher elevation areas around the coastline. we're going to keep that breeze as well. and daytime highs for tomorrow will be once again in the 60s around the peninsula. and the coast. we've got some 70s through oakland, 71, hayward 75, and then we do still have a couple of 80. so that warmer weather will continue into your thursday. leading into friday, we're going to keep the 70s and 80s in the pattern, but once we get to friday night into saturday, we do have a change in
5:20 pm
our weather pattern. good news though, the dry weather will continue. the biggest shift heading into the weekend is going to be some slight cooling and also an uptick in those winds as we inch closer towards your sunday. now inland temperatures heading into friday, we're going to be in the 80s. i talked about that cooler air mass on saturday and sunday. you could see it here. we're going to go from 80s to upper 70s, leading us into sunday and monday we're going to see the breeze kick up just a bit. and daytime highs will remain in those 70s, leading us into next week. but at least we're going to keep that sunshine with the exception of a couple of areas of cloud cover. early saturday morning. cooler sunday for san francisco as well. we're going to go from upper 60s in san francisco to low 60s by the time that we hit sunday. but the weekend is going to be great. we're going to have spring like weather. expect to see that fog lingering. very typical for this time of year. heading into monday and tuesday, we are monitoring a different weather pattern that could kick up the wind speeds even more. but for now, very springlike around the bay area. sounds good. perfect. thank you. thanks, vinnie.
