11:01 am
marcus washington and i'm laura garcia. in the last hour, embattled alameda county district attorney pamela price spoke about that recall effort to remove her from office. it's an election we now know voters will see on the november ballot. nbc bay area's kris sanchez joining us now from the newsroom with more on what price had to say. i'm sure she had a lot to say. chris she had a lot to say. and the district attorney talked a lot about continuing to prosecute crime in oakland. even with that recall election set for less than six months from now, the win one, two, three. protect the win. these are some of her supporters who stood behind her holding signs saying we support pamela price. defenders of the district attorney who wanted to show their support. some of them were people who campaigned for her. one was a longshoreman who spoke of that group's support. some were regular citizens, but the most powerful messages came from the district attorney herself as she thanked her supporters. the effort to overturn the november election has never been a
11:02 am
grassroots movement. it is a platinum roots movement. from the beginning. it's been an effort bankrolled by a handful of super rich, real estate investors and tech executives. the platinum roots behind the scenes propping up the faces out front, falsely claiming that they were grassroots. a price also said that she was glad that the supervisors did the right thing, setting that recall election to coincide with the november general election. in order to save money, it is estimated that a special election would have cost alameda county up to $20 million. we will continue following this story for you through the day, and you can find developments at nbcbayarea.com. laura, certainly a talker. well, new at 11, an antioch family reaches a wrongful death settlement with the city after their son died following a confrontation with police. angelo quinto died back in 2020. he was suffering from a mental health crisis when police
11:03 am
arrived at his home, officers were responding to a report that quinto was having a dispute with his mother. according to the lawsuit, he died by asphyxia after being knelt on on the neck by police. the district attorney never charged the officers. civil rights attorney john burris says the city agreed to settle with the family for $7.5 million. burris and quinto's family are holding a news conference to discuss that settlement this afternoon. teachers and parents from the south bay are meeting with legislators right now in sacramento for their annual bus trip for education, while other teachers in the south bay are trying to pressure their school district for better pay. nbc bay area's bob redell has a report from los gatos. there are over 100 teachers at saratoga high, and here at los gatos high behind me, who are rallying outside their schools before class starts today to try to pressure their school district to pay them more money. one teacher tells us that before covid, they were in the top three of teacher salaries in the
11:04 am
area in the comp, comparing themselves to other school districts around here. now they say they are number 10 or 12. they just want to, in their words, catch up so they can afford the high cost of living here. many teachers came and afford to live in this school district, and a number work two jobs just to supplement their teacher salaries. the salary that we're offering many of the prospective of candidates that we've been interviewing have taken jobs elsewhere. we have not been able to get our first, choices. so we're having to get, you know, in the pool, take down to our second sometimes third choice. and that's unfortunate. historically, i've been here many, many years and it would we would be the school that would take teachers away from other schools. and now and now we are the opposite. people are taking our our staff away. now, this was the scene earlier this morning outside san jose state, where the 21st annual bus trip for education took off for
11:05 am
sacramento. this is an annual event organized by senator dave cortese of san jose. these annual excursions are an opportunity for participants. we're talking about teachers, students, their parents to learn about pending legislation surrounding education. also, the trip always takes place after the governor releases their revised budgets, which governor newsom recently did. he pledged to dip into a rainy day fund to protect funding for k through 12. however, funding for csu or uc could still be at risk. earlier, we did speak with a teacher from guadalupe elementary in the south bay. as a teacher, i'm watching our students through the elementary system. i'm a special education teacher, but we're observing, and by middle school we're losing a lot in literacy with our students. they're just not putting down those tablets, picking up books. so we're trying to come up with innovative ways to get books into students hands again. so i'm to talk to our leaders about some thoughts i have towards that. and working with their school communities and in their communities to get books into
11:06 am
these kids hands and get those tablets out for our phones, out for a while. and do you think the state's doing a good job when it comes to education? not really. for today. we'll see. what is there one issue that is of specific concern to you? what's the concern for me, for the future of the kids, for a new generation? one reason why the teachers have picked today to rally is because it's close to the end of the school year. they want to pressure the district to come back with a better salary offer. so they're not negotiating into the summer. here in los gatos, bob redell nbc, bay area news. thank you very much, bob. in a statement, los gatos-saratoga union high school district said, quote, the district is currently in the middle of regular contract negotiations with both the district teachers association as well as our classified staff bargaining unit. we provide regular updates after every negotiation session to keep our
11:07 am
families and staff fully informed and look forward to continuing good faith negotiations that are mutually beneficial and fiscally responsible to our community. at least two bay area campus protests suddenly appeared to be winding down. but today at uc merced, activists voiced their concerns outside at the uc regents meeting. those diverse disclose divest. we will not stop. we will not rest. now. they demand that the regents divest from companies which are funding the war and allow students protest peacefully. also inside that meeting, activists spoke to regents about the experiences from recent protests. when police cleared those campuses, all speakers and attendees inside as well as outside were peaceful. now, here in the bay area later today, pro-palestinian activists at san francisco state will address an agreement. this was reached by the school to dismantle a tent encampment that started there
11:08 am
more than two weeks ago. that group first made that announcement yesterday, posting it on social media as well. organizers were also vowing to continue their efforts to force a cease fire in gaza. uc berkeley pro-palestinian supporters, they're also dismantling their encampments, vowing to keep the pressure to end the middle east conflict. many took their tents down yesterday after more than three weeks outside of sproul plaza. now the peace was reached after an agreement with administrators and the public. a statement from the chancellor supporting a cease fire. protesters are still demanding that uc system divest all assets in israel. let's take a live look outside this midday. look at that sun over san francisco. we had kind of a hazy , foggy start this morning. looks like it's starting to burn off a little bit. looks really good there, but all of the low clouds that we've seen throughout the morning, we'll keep temperatures down along the coastline. but some of our inland areas are going to be heating up. that's a live look in san rafael, where it cleared
11:09 am
out a lot sooner. and our inland areas will also give us a big range in temperatures from the coastal areas to the inland valleys. now tomorrow we'll see more of the same as the sunshine continues. but then for the weekend we are going to gradually cool off as our weather stays dry. not a lot of changes here in san jose as we're heading out for lunch. it will be in the mid 60s for a low 70s as well, but we're headed for the upper 70s for the afternoon. will be parts of the city that reaches a high up to 81 degrees today. a little bit warmer than it was yesterday. and we're also seeing that for the valleys. while in half moon bay, we're only going to see a high of about 62 degrees. we'll talk about more changes ahead in our weekend forecast coming up in a few minutes. sounds good. we'll check back with you. well, amid rise in overdoses across the country, walgreens will offer its own cheaper version of the opioid overdose reversal drug naloxone. the company said it will sell a two dose pack of walgreens brand naloxone for just under $35. walgreens says
11:10 am
its cheaper version of the over-the-counter opioid overdose reversal spray will be in all stores at the end of the month. this comes as the brand new data from the cdc shows overdose deaths decreased for the first time in five years, but still topped 100,000. while that number is less than in previous years, it is still a staggering loss. last year, 806 people died from overdoses in san francisco alone. well, the stage is set ahead for you this midday. our scott mcgrew breaking down the two debates. president biden and former president trump have agreed to participate in. i'm ginger conejero saab at sfo construction for harvey milk terminal one here at sfo almost complete. up ahead. we'll give you a behind the scenes look before that renovated part of the terminal is going to be publicly unveiled. and it's all going down to the pitch tonight at the chivas take on club

11:14 am
hospital. his official facebook page confirms this assassination attempt, reuters reports. a person was detained following the incident. president joe biden issued a statement saying in part, we condemn this horrific act of violence. our embassy is in close touch with the government of slovakia and is ready to assist. well, the consumer price index shows inflation rose 3/10 of a percent last month. that's a welcome slowdown in inflation. prices are up 3.3% compared to last year, close to but not close enough to the federal reserve's 2% target. well, president biden and donald trump, they have agreed to debate twice in fact, late next month on cnn and then in september on abc. but scott mcgrew trump would actually like a third. he would like a third, maybe more. in october, on fox news, he announced the date of a third debate. and even the people who would host it after agreeing to the first two on cnn
11:15 am
and abc. but we have no idea if he's actually cleared that with fox or if he even has formally proposed it to the biden camp. now, this all got rolling when the biden camp said this morning it was willing to do two debates, but it has conditioned the biden campaign says there should be no third party candidates involved. robert kennedy, they should do it in a tv studio with microphones that can be cut off when somebody speaks out of turn and no studio audience. they also said there should be one vice presidential debate. we should point out. we don't know yet who trump's vp pick will be. one of the most striking conditions, though, is the biden campaign says it will not participate in debates by the nonpartisan commission on presidential debates, which have been running these debates since 20 mid 1980s but seemed unprepared for what we did see in 2020. everybody knows he's a liar but you. i just want to
11:16 am
make sure, joe, you're the i want to make sure last in your class. not first. i god again. both sides have agreed to two debates, but not who will be in the studio. what kind of audience, if any, trump wrote on social media. truth social. he wants a big crowd. let's get ready to rumble, he said. that was trump. here's biden. donald trump lost two debates to me in 2020, and since then, he hadn't shown up for debate. now he's acting like he wants to debate me again. we'll make my day, pal. i'll even do it twice. so let's pick the dates. donald, i hear you're free on wednesdays. okay, so that's a reference to trump's trial over hush money to an adult film star. the court does not hold trial on wednesday, so no court today. trump. meantime, yesterday spent another day in court listening to his lawyers cross examine his former lawyer, michael cohen, who testified against his former boss. and laura will be back in court tomorrow. it will be interesting to watch those debates, scott. thank you. well, california wants to pay you $400

to help get rid of the gas tax. the state is launching a pilot program to test taxing drivers by the mile instead of by the gallon. 80% of road repairs are funded by the gas tax, but with more drivers going electric and a looming ban on gas powered vehicles in california, the state is trying to find a better funding source. if you want to be one of the 800 drivers to participate in the pilot program, go to ca road charge.com. governor gavin newsom heading to italy. he's participating in the vatican climate summit. the governor is expected to stay there until friday. now, pope francis is presiding over that event, and the pope has previously called climate change, quote, a global social issue. one intimately related to the dignity of human life. the massachusetts governor relayed the keynote address at that summit earlier this morning . well, now to a live look at sfo. this is where the final phase of construction for
11:18 am
terminal one is underway. and we are actually getting a first look inside at the multi-billion dollar project weeks before the official unveiling. nbc bay area's ginger conejero saab joins us live from the airport, and ginger, the pandemic certainly put a pause to a lot of this work, but they say it'll be done by next month. that's right. laura and marcus. and this has been eight years in the making. you can see behind us construction has shut down a couple lanes outside harvey milk terminal one here at sfo, but that will all be reopened. ready to go on june 11th when the completion of terminal one will be unveiled. now, this project has happened in four phases. it's been completed in sections since 2019. it began in 2016. now, today we were shown the fourth and final phase, which you see in green on your screens, and i'll let you guys decide whether or not it's been worth the wait. now, this is the fruition of a $2.5 billion project. the final phase will add many things, including a new
11:19 am
ticket counter area. alaska airlines will move into terminal one and have a new counter there, joining jetblue, southwest, and other airlines. in addition, a new mezzanine level security checkpoint because the spokesperson for sfo, doug yakel, was explaining automated security checkpoints this morning, they take down wait times by 30% because the machines do the work for them. they'll screen the bags and automatically separate them in lanes. now there will also be two new gates upping the number from 25 to 27. possibly. however the most significant addition is a connecting walkway linking all of the sfo terminals. what this means is, no matter what airlines you're connecting to and from, you can now do it all post-security without having to exit out. go through the security checkpoint again. so we're very excited to be finishing this project. big news for convenience for passengers. now there also be new concessions, shopping and retail, public art gallery is additional baggage claim areas
11:20 am
and five automated screening lanes. now those screening lanes are a big deal because that will be the first of its kind here at the airport. and typically exit lanes are a soft spot. we're told, for security. and this is something that will allow passengers to leave the terminals, exit out. but really not allow them to come back in without having somebody to man that station. all of this will be unveiled to the public on june 11th, right in time for sfo to begin another project over at terminal three that will have more construction and renovation there. but at least this part of the airport is already done, guys. good stuff. marcus and laura. a lot of those travelers are like, finally, exactly. it's always nice to see when something's done right. it is. thanks, ginger. okay, well, kari hall is joining us now and we're giving her a shout out this midday. absolutely. you know what? because she's being recognized by an organization dedicated to finding solutions to climate change. of course, we've seen a lot of carry stories, really helping us all understand what's going on. right. and what we can do. so
11:21 am
this morning, the climate or the citizens climate lobby, they actually came here to nbc bay area, presenting kerry with its climate coverage champion award. this is recognizing all the work kerry has done to raise awareness of climate change and its impact on all of us. the citizens climate lobby works in more than 80 countries. yes, kerry is global now, with six chapters right here in the bay area alone, and we're focused on educating the public and community leaders and elected officials about climate change, but also working with them on important solutions. and our solutions tend to really focus more on eliminating carbon pollution over time, which is better for the environment and good for the climate. proud of her. we are. that's great. well deserved. yeah. so look, if you want to see kerry's award winning climate reporting, all you have to do is go to our website. it's all in one spot. just go to nbcbayarea.com. slash climate in crisis here. congratulations i would stand up and i would tell you too much. so i can. so it's the first one they've awarded in the country
11:22 am
and they have more on the east coast. history maker too. yeah. thank you. and it's a team effort. but it is nice to be recognized. it is wonderful. and you're making such a difference. and you educate people that can read even more about it at nbcbayarea.com. about to post something too. so. all right, well, let's enjoy our beautiful weather as we are now seeing the clouds breaking up in parts of the bay. and we're also seeing some cool temperatures. we're right now at 62, in san francisco, san rafael and palo alto is 64 degrees and 66. in san jose. we have a little bit of a breeze picking up for some spots. i do think it will get a little bit more windy as we go into the afternoon, into the evening, but before then, we're going to see the temperatures warming up and spreading out from the coastline with low 60s for a high to submit 80 as you make your way over to fairfield. so we're getting into our usual may pattern, where we are starting to see our microclimates in full effect and a wide range of temperatures as well as sky conditions. well, tomorrow we're going to see more
11:23 am
of the same temperatures in the low 70s in the north bay. and on friday we're starting to see some of those temperatures coming down. but it will be a chilly evening. if you're going out to oracle park, you're going to watch the giants play tonight. hopefully we can get them in with a win this evening. and we're going to have some cool temperatures. so bundle up if you're going. we're seeing a lot of low clouds and fog near the coastline. but for the valleys it has been clearing out. we may start again tomorrow morning with the fog and some of our valleys, like in santa clara valley and parts of napa and sonoma valleys in the morning. but then it clears out as we go throughout the day and as we go into the weekend, there will be a slight change in our weather pattern. we've had high pressure giving us the sunshine and dry conditions, but we'll see a low dropping in from the pacific northwest from sunday into monday, and that may cause some showers and thunderstorms to develop over the sierra and we're also going to get a slight cool down not only for the weekend but into early next week. but the changes that we are seeing are very slight. take
11:24 am
a look at san jose's ten day forecast going from upper 70s to mid 70s and then lower 70s. so it's not a huge swing in temperatures we're seeing here, but the overall trend will be for those numbers to come down a little bit. we're going from low 80s today, tomorrow and friday to upper 70s and then mid 70s for the beginning of next week. and it's going to be nice to have this stretch of sunshine and also comfortable temperatures. and san francisco will at times see the clouds and fog temperatures in the mid to upper 60s here for highs as we go into some overnight lows in the lower 50s. so we'll be monitor those subtle changes. marcus and laura. all right. thanks, gary. well happening now in south bay. leaders are set to consider a new ordinance aiming to remove encampments by creeks. silicon valley's largest water agency. valley water, is behind the move. the ordinance is intended to protect the waterways, to help the agency provide clean water to santa clara county. violators of the

ordinance would face a fine of up to $500 and 30 days in jail. the district's environmental creek cleanup committee will scuss that issuedi
