i'm laura garcia. we're going to check the commute with mike in just a little bit. but first let's check the forecast with carrie. it's the same as yesterday's weather starting out, cloudy clearing out and a comfortable afternoon. so we're starting out with a live look in oakland this morning as it is mostly cloudy. and so as you're heading out, the door feels cool and our clouds will linger throughout the next several hours. will be in the mid 50s at 10:00 and then in the low 60s at noon. we're headed for the upper 60s here today. hayward will see a high of 73 and 83 in fairfield, while morgan hill will hit those high temperatures in the upper 70s will be in the upper 60s for san mateo and upper 70s for much of the north bay. tomorrow we'll bring it up a degree or two for some spots, but overall, we're not looking at many changes over the next few days. and mike, you're tracking an issue for the bay bridge commute. i am carrie, so i'm watching, actually not the backup at the toll plaza because we know that's full by now. watching this flow of traffic. and it is moving steadily across

the bay bridge. and spacing is okay, but getting closer to the city, just past treasure island, where you saw those low clouds. but visibility is fine. we did have a lot of slowing approaching the fifth exit off ramp there. we did have a disabled vehicle and after a crash and it looked like maybe things are going to have trouble clearing. we're watching and things are still moving steadily across that bridge, so we'll track that for another couple minutes. and hopefully chp will let us know that they did clear that off ramp. and the exit. i'll let you know. meanwhile, the rest of the bay has a pretty light flow of traffic. the south bay did see some slowing 101 from two 8680 all the way up past the airport. that was a little bit more slowing we typically see, but now it's backing off, getting ready for the next slowdown at about 640. back to you. thanks, mike. well breaking news, the top u.s. auto safety regulator opening an investigation into waymo, the national highway traffic safety administration, looking into 22 incidents in which the company's cars were involved in collisions or may have violated traffic laws. 17 crashes are a part of that investigation. waymo vehicles hit stationary objects

the american economy this morning. in the meantime, a lot of his staff working on getting weapons to ukraine. interesting. a lot going on. on this tuesday morning, the white house tells us the president will speak about jobs no later than 7 a.m. our time. so that's any moment now. the state department, meantime, says secretary of state antony blinken, has met with ukrainian president zelenskyy in kyiv. secretary blinken making a secret unscheduled trip to ukraine after his shuttle diplomacy in the middle east. more u.s. weapons on their way. zelensky desperately needs anti-aircraft technology like patriot batteries to protect civilians in kyiv and kharkiv, a video that got its start on social media. now the subject of concern in all kinds of world capitals, showing people believed to be israelis tearing apart an aid truck and carrying food and medicine intended for
6:44 am
palestinian civilians. nbc has verified this is a real video. reporters on the ground say the people are israeli settlers in the west bank. so this happened far from gaza. the aid trucks are said to have come from jordan. we've reached out to the idf for more information. the settlers claim the aid would have gone to hamas. back here at home, president biden says the u.s. will levy new tariffs on chinese steel and aluminum, as well as chinese cars. we talked a bit about this yesterday before the announcement. now, a reminder chinese flag right here because we'll be putting tariffs on chinese goods. but americans pay the tariffs. the idea being goods under tariff become so expensive. you don't buy them. speaker of the house mike johnson says he'll attend donald trump's hush money trial today. trump of course, accused of covering up hush money payments to an adult film actress. yesterday, trump's former lawyer
6:45 am
michael cohen, testified against him cross-examination expected today. highly unusual for a sitting speaker of the house to attend a criminal trial right in front of the jury. in their view , then again, it is highly unusual. it never happened before that a former president has been accused of crimes. yesterday, senators j. jd vance right there, and tommy tuberville, both possible picks for vice president, watched cohen testify. michael cohen is the prosecution's star witness. this guy is a convicted felon who admitted in his testimony that he secretly recorded his former employer and that he only did it once, allegedly, and that this was supposed to help donald trump. does any reasonable, sensible person believe anything that michael cohen says? okay so that's true. prosecutors played a recording cohen made of a conversation with his boss, donald trump, about making a

payoff to the national enquirer. now, why would cohen do that? he was on trump's side at the time, cohen says it's because the head of the national enquirer didn't believe trump would actually pay, and he wanted proof that he would. after all, laura, donald trump does have that reputation. interesting. thanks for the latest there, scott. it is 6:45 right now, a highly anticipated decision could be on deck for leaders in half moon bay today. the city's planning commission may vote to move forward on affordable housing for farm workers. the meeting comes after governor gavin newsom issued a warning last week he's threatening legal consequences if delays continue on the project. if approved, they would construct 40 affordable housing units. it comes after a deadly mass shooting last year highlighted poor living conditions for farmworkers on the peninsula. in response, the city proposed building the complex for senior farm workers, but they never approved it. well, new this morning, may is mental health awareness month, and today, governor gavin newsom will visit san mateo county for

an update on his effort to transform california's mental health system. it comes as medical experts find new links between head and the heart. a recent report by the american heart association found that social isolation and loneliness can lead to heart inflammation and heart disease. one cardiologist with el camino health says in general, loneliness can trigger the brain's symptomatic, symptomatic nerve system, controlling our fight or flight response and the sympathetic system leads to higher blood pressure. it leads to higher cholesterol, at least a higher blood sugar. all these factors, which we know are directly related to the development of heart disease. so simply, it's not just being lonely, but it's all the mental aspects of being lonely. so yeah, may not affect everybody, but there's a much higher likelihood of a lonely individual, of an isolated individual to feel those those mental stimulants which then lead to the development of
6:48 am
cardiovascular disease. he also says that we all want to manage our blood pressure, glucose and cholesterol levels. to do that, he recommends exercise a balanced diet, no smoking and limit the alcohol or just cut it all out altogether. the giants should find out today how bad the injury is for young cooley, who hurt his shoulder on sunday. tonight they'll also get another crack at the rival dodgers after losing a tight one last night at oracle. the game went into extra innings, tied at four. that's when the dodgers will smith hit a double to the wall, scoring two runs. the giants still had a chance in the bottom half but went into double play. dodgers take the first game and a three game series 6 to 4. well, breaking news just in this morning. the golden state wnba team officially releasing its logo. the team will be called the valkyries. the games will be played at chase center, but the team will train over in oakland, where the warriors practice
6:49 am
until 2019. fans will be able to celebrate the launch of the new team with the valkyries block party at thrive city at chase center on saturday from 2 to 6 p.m. kalani as well as e-40, will perform. i was just looking at the logo so the wings. all right. and wnba season actually begins later today. one of the players everyone is looking at to bring her college stardom to the league. that's right. we're talking about caitlin clark here and her new team, the indiana fever open against the connecticut sun tonight. it's clark's debut in wnba after shattering college records for the iowa hawkeyes. her performance has captured the attention of the entire country, helping her become the one pick, the number one pick in the wnba draft. this is a dream. this is something i wrote down on a piece of paper when i was in, like second grade, like, get a basketball scholarship, play in
6:50 am
the wnba. check, check check the box. for the first time in 20 years, the sun stadium sold out in anticipation for clark's debut tonight. more stadiums expected to be sold out as fans wait for clark and the fever to visit their city, which is great. well, now you know the secret is should write it all down in second grade. exactly yeah. my mom was trying to get some tickets to get that game when they play the las vegas aces, right. and so it's like already sold out. sold out. it's ridiculous. all right. yeah. all right. well we'll see. maybe they'll be next year at the golden state. yeah. valkyrie with the valkyries. sure look forward to that. all right. so let's get started this morning if you want to get out there, practice, shoot some hoops. it's nice and cool. we're starting out cloudy across much of the bay area, some low visibility in a few spots, and as we take a look at walnut creek, well, here we have a clear view. it is starting out mainly clear this morning in walnut creek as well as pleasant hill. we're seeing temperatures in the low 50s to
6:51 am
start as we go throughout the day, though, it's going to be clearing out and gradually warming up. we'll be in the low 70s here at 1:00 today, and in the upper 70s in parts of the east bay, as well as the north bay. a lot of these numbers are back to what we had yesterday in the upper 70s for the south bay, and also just a degree or two warmer for tomorrow as we reach the peak of the warmth, as our temperatures come up to the low to mid 80s, we're really not seeing anything too major happening here. no big shifts in our temperatures. we're looking at some coastal temperatures in the 60s, our valley temperatures in the 70s and 80s. and each morning i think we'll start out with some low clouds and fog, which will be very slow to clear from the coastline. it shows that as we go into the next few mornings, there may be some coastal drizzle, some low visibility and spots, and some of that may also fill into some of our valleys with some low visibility and some fog and some spots looking at our overall
6:52 am
view, at our weather pattern and what may shake things up for us, there's not a lot. there will be a low developing farther to the south as we go toward the end of the weekend, but overall, the dry weather continues. the jet stream, those upper level winds stay well to the north of us, and a slight cool down in our temperatures. in spots like morgan hill, we'll see some upper 70s for the next couple of days, but then as we approach the weekend, it will come down a few degrees. and the coolest of those days will be next monday. and then we go back up to the mid 70s. but you can see that it's just a few degrees that we're talking about here. so for the inland areas, we're going from 80 today to mid 80s on thursday and then upper 70s for the weekend. and san francisco's keeping it steady here with some 60s throughout the forecast. mike, you're hearing about a crash on the altamont pass. yeah, just out of the altamont pass. in your commute direction, this is mostly affecting folks out of tracey on 205. it's just past the merge where this crash sounds like everything is on the shoulder. the traffic pattern holds up steady, but it's slow
6:53 am
in that area anyway. in fact, the only thing unusual about this morning's commute is that there's not really anything going on as far as major crashes we do have. you're slowing in typical spots, including the south bay where the build happens, as well as right here, the san mateo bridge, again, just getting more congestion. but we don't have any issues. so there's no sudden slowing. it's just gradually slowing as the commute builds for these lanes. heading over to the peninsula. back to you. all right. thank you very much, mike. it is 652 right now and happening now. the nfl releasing just a little more of its schedule ahead of tomorrow's official unveil. niners fans, guess what your opening week game is now set. it'll be a monday night at home against aaron rodgers of the new york jets. this will be the first time the niners open the season at home since 2020. so far, only a handful of nfl games next season have been leaked, but it starts thursday, september fifth with the chiefs and ravens on nbc. bay area. well, up next, a look at those top stories making headlines this morning on today in the bay, starting with that breaking news. waymo now under investigation. the multiple

such as gates or parked cars. it comes as local leaders have been expressing concern over waymo's expansion of testing its cars in peninsula cities, south bay's leading water provider. voting today to up its rates. santa clara valley water is expected to approve a nearly 13% rate hike. it would add about $9 per month to a customer's bill. in northern santa clara county, south county residents would see a monthly spike that will be around one fourth, a one third, i should say of that charge. and valley water says that that money is needed to fund the current seismic retrofit of anderson dam in morgan hill. costs to complete the project will have now ballooned to about $2.3 billion. also happening today, pro-palestine activists plan to protest outside of the google i o developers conference. it is happening at shoreline amphitheater in mountain view today. the event spotlights the company's most anticipated projects. you'll recall google recently fired
6:59 am
dozens of workers who protested inside google offices. that conference starts at 9:00 this morning. san francisco supervisors today hold a second reading on their recently approved ordinance to ban so-called forever chemicals in firefighters gear as our investigative unit reports, studies have shown that the gear fire fighters wear is made with materials called pfas, proven to raise cancer risk. they're called forever chemicals because they don't easily break down once the skin absorbs it. san francisco firefighters are already testing alternative pfoa free fabrics. they believe are just as effective, and you can view the entire story under our investigative unit section of our home page. let's get a look at the forecast before we go today. another nice one. another nice one. that does start out with some clouds but will be clearing out today. we're headed up to about 80 degrees for the inland areas and slightly warmer through the end of the week. and san francisco will hit a high today of about 65 and upper 60s
7:00 am
through thursday. and we are looking at a smooth drive. here's the backup at the richmond side of the bridge heading towards san rafael. 580 slows a bit coming out of richmond, but then no problem across the bay and there across the bay, palo alto moves smoothly. well the today show just moments away. however, we continue today in the bay on roku and other streaming platforms live at 8:00. we talk live with a local infectious disease specialist about an all new covid variant and the possibility of a summer surge, plus, all new findings showing the impact wildfires are having on our soil. always a lot to talk about on that show. all right. look, thanks for joining us this morning. hope you have a great day. today's show is coming up good tuesday morning. that make-or-break witness taking the stand at donald trump's trial. >> yeah. and michael cohen back in the hot seat this morning. it is may the 14th.
