oklahoma. our team is tracking the ongoing threat this morning. breaking news in gaza, where israel launched a precise counter terrorism operation in rafah. and overnight hamas says it agreed to a zooscease-fire prop. why the judge in donald trump's criminal case issued his gravest threat. boeing and nasa forced to scrub the first star liner launch, what stopped the new spacecraft from lifting off. it's tuesday, may 7. "early today" starts right now. good morning, i'm frances rivera. we begin with breaking news. severe weather striking the central u.s. overnight with at least 15 tornados reported since monday evening, with seven of

them in oklahoma. that's according to the national weather service. in barnesville, oklahoma, at least one person is dead and others injured after the small town suffered a direct hit. the twister there damaging at least 30 homes. toppling trees and power lines. the osage county sheriff telling nbc news that crews rescued several residents who were trapped. multiple gas leaks have been reported, including inside a nursing home that was damaged. patients have been evacuated, and fortunately no one was injured. multiple roads are closed due to debris blocking roadwayes. and a tornado tore through bartelsville. people in a hotel heard a tornado sirens, as high winds knocked out power, forcing them to rush inside to take cover. debris was scattered throughout the hotel. let's bring in michelle grossman for the latest on these storms. good morning, michelle. >> good morning, frances.

we continue to track these storms. we're going to continue to track storms all throughout the day into wednesday and thursday. you can see the line of storms. and you see brighter colors, we have tornado watches, severe thunderstorm warnings in the orange boxes. and where you see the red boxes, those are tornado warnings. so you need no gto get to your basement or a powder room or closet is helpful. seeing heavy rain falling. flash flood warnings for places like tulsa, guthrie. where you see the red is a flash flood warning. you need to heed the warnings there as well. we're not done with it. 29 million people impacted by severe weather, damaging hail, 2 inches or larger. tornados could be strong as we go throughout the day and evening and nighttime hours. winds gusting up to 60 miles per hour, especially where you see the orange, yellow shading. that's where we are seeing the likeliest spots for these

storms. paducah, nashville, you could see storms. wednesday, that number grows to 44 million. also looking at a big warmup for some. we'll talk about that coming up. >> thank you, michelle. after american officials have labeled them the only-remaining obstacle to peace, hamas in gaza suddenly announced they had accepted a cease-fire proposal. scenes of jubilation in gaza were premature when israel did not accept their demands. for the latest, let's go live to chapman bell. do we know what happened with the cease-fire? >> reporter: good morning, frances. we've seen this time and time again. negotiations for a temporary cease-fire in exchange for hostages or prisoners failing to come together. the two sides, hamas and israel failing to agree on language. though this time, hamas said

they had accepted a proposal for a cease-fire, and this was followed by celebrations on the streets of gaza. as you point out, those celebrations proving to be premature. israel saying hamas did not agree on the same framework. releasing a statement last night, they said the prime minister saying the war cabinet unanimously decided israel will continue its operation in rafah in order to apply military pressure on hamas to advance the release of our hostages and achieve the other objectives of the war. while the hamas proposal is far from meeting israel's core demands, israel would dispatch a ranking delegation to egypt in an effort to maximize the possibility of reaching an agreement on terms acceptable to israel. now this, as this statement came out, israel's saying that they had began a precise counter terrorism operation in eastern rafah after encouraging residents to evacuate. and so far, though, the use of airstrikes there and ground troops don't appear to be the

major military operation that has worried the white house. though, we'll have to wait and see if they can try to resurrect this proposal and both sides come to agreement to bring about a cease-fire that has been long awaited, frances? >> thank you. the war in gaza is continuing to royal american universities. m.i.t. has ordered pro-palestinian protesters to clear their encampment. students are so far refusing, and there have been scuffles with police. protesters at the university of chicago erected a fence around their camps after talks with the school failed overnight. and faculty are warning the administration against bringing in the police. >> our most immediate concern is for the well-being of our students. we don't want them getting beat up, just because they're camping on the lawn. >> several people were also arrested in new york city, protesting near the met gala. meanwhile, columbia university

has decided to cancel their main graduation ceremony, citing safety concerns. emery u emery university also says they will move commencement off campus grounds for the same reason. now to the latest in the trial of donald trump here in new york. testimony will continue in a few hours in the former president's criminal hush money trial. mr. trump is under more pressure to keep his thoughts to himself about the jury and witnesses. nbc's brie jackson joins us. and the judge again brought up the threat of jail time if the former president keeps talking. >> reporter: that's right, good morning, frances. the judge ordered mr. trump to pay $1,000 more for criticizing the jury. this marks the tenth violation of the gag order. judge juan merchan says it appears the fines are not serving as a deterrent. he says the last thing he wants to do is put the former president in jail but warned he will if it's necessary. mr. trump suggested to reporters that he's not afraid of that

possibility. >> this judge has given me a gag order and says you'll go noto jl if you violate it, and frankly, you know what? our constitution is much more important than jail. it's not even close. i'll do that sacrifice any day. >> reporter: and jury heard from jeffrey mcconney. he oversaw the accounting department at the trump organization during the time prosecutors accused mr. trump of falsifying records. mcconnie testified that he was ordered to reimburse michael cohen for a $130,000 payment to stormy daniels, with most of the money coming from mr. trump's personal account. but he said he did not talk to mr. trump about the business records. the jury was also shown checks written to michael cohen with donald trump's signature. another trump organization employee testified that most of the checks were signed at the white house. prosecutors estimate that they will need about two more weeks to call witnesses.

then mr. trump's attorneys will take over, and we could see the former president take the stand in his own defense. >> brie, thank you. an american soldier was detained in russia last week the army says. staff sergeant gordon black was stationed at a base in south korea. he had reached the end of his tour when he traveled to russia to visit a woman. officials say he went without permission from the army. he was arrested on thursday, accused of theft. he is currently in pretrial confinement. the state department currently warns americans against traveling to russia. tennessee is taking steps to protect music city from a.i. governor bill lee held a ceremonial signing of what's known as the elvis act. it stands for ensuring likeness, voice, image security. the law, which went into effect in march establishes strong protections against deep fakes and voice clones. some unbelievable destruction caught on camera in nebraska last month.
