right now at 6:00, smoke seen for miles across the south bay. crews rushed to put out a fire before it reaches a nursing home in downtown san jose. san francisco may have canceled the celebration of 4/20, but that didn't stop these people. more from hippie hill. and a sendoff of legacy trains as part upgrades to new cars. the news at 6:00 starts right now. thank you for joining me at 6:00. i am terry mcsweeney. a massive fire sends smoke into the air, seen for miles around. the flames broke out in downtown

josi come around 13th street at around 7:00 a.m. no one inside, but flames were intense and threatening a care facility two doors down. several people were moved from the facility. >> there has been no citizen injuries or fatalities, and no firefighter injuries or fatalities. there was a possibility we needed to evacuate a convalescent hospital to the north. that was considered. eventually all of those people were let back to their facility. >> flames were controlled before spreading but they were on the scene, mopping up. monitoring hotspots. the cause of the fire is under investigation. a somber day for the oakland police department. one of their own has died from injuries he suffered in an on- duty crash nearly four years

ago. officer wingate joined in 2018. a few months later he was oddly hurt and a crash at the port of oakland. wingate was responding to a call about a suspicious person as his car collided with another, then the patrol car careened into a parked semi. he dealt with injuries and had to retire in 2020. wingate died surrounding by family including his father, who is an oakland police captain . unofficial celebration for an unofficial holiday. the sanctioned 4/20 celebration at golden gate park called off this year. we are used to seeing stuff like this on the day celebrating cannabis culture. this is video of the massive crowds we had last year. that is massive. stages and performances along with it brought all kinds of reasons to go there. the marijuana meet up to officially light up, and this year, canceled due to lack in funding. but that did not stop many from

attending anyway, firing up and enjoying 4/20. here is nbc bay area's christie smith. >> reporter: the official 4/20 didn't happen, the but that didn't stop people from coming out. the crowd still good-sized with a haze of smoke adrift for the celebration of cannabis culture. the vibes at golden gate park were still happening near robin williams meadow. >> there are people that still support the movement and come to the park and claim their spot and hang out and smoke some bud. >> this is the vibe we have always come to enjoy. >> reporter: these two came from utah. >> 800 miles, but you know, it was canceled, and we were like we will find a party or be the

life of the party. one or the other. >> we come every year, but we thought this was being shut down, but we figured we could still hang out on the hill. >> reporter: organizers were forced to cancel the official event due to economic challenges, meaning no stage or booth like previous years. the parks and rec department. >> there is a kickball and volleyball and corn hole and fun and games, there's a dj out there, and then there is some unofficial 4/20 stuff going on on the hill, but it's not a huge crush of humanity. >> reporter: hippie hill is a popular spot on the unofficial cannabis holiday. police and other agencies were out. >> we just want to make sure everyone is safe. we had water and medics out here. >> reporter: church of ambrosia had a team here. >> we know the event was

canceled, so we are encouraging people not to come, but we expect them to, so we want them to be safe. >> reporter: they said it was what they hoped for. >> it was fun just to meet people, and you know? look at the cute dogs even, you know? everybody is so happy. >> reporter: christie smith, nbc bay area news. a major road closure could impact your weekend. caltrans has shut down all westbound lanes of highway 37 in the north bay for road repairs from vallejo to sears point in sonoma. it is expected to remain closed until monday. the red line is the closure. the green is how to get around it. drivers will be directed to highways 12, 29, and 121. this is the first of four planned weekend closures. eastbound on westland westbound. next week will be the. caltrans is ending to wrap up

construction before napa's popular bottle rock festival at the end of may. services of the ferry have been discontinued, because of an issue at the pier at sausalito. the peer will remain closed until it can be fixed. there's no word on when that might be. the ferry says buses will bust people to and from san francisco. about 3500 ride the ferry every weekday. part is celebrating the end of an era. the legacy cars made their final trip today. people hopped on the old trains for the final run along the original b.a.r.t. tracks connecting macarthur over to the fremont station. the celebration in oakland marked the historic event. to give you an idea of how many were there our producer,

it was a busy saturday for lawmakers. $95 billion was passed today for aid to ukraine and taiwan. lawmakers were seen cheering and waving flags after the passage for the bill for ukraine. the bill now heads to the senate. there includes funding for israel and taiwan. plus funding for border

security. speaker mike johnson refused to bring that bill to the floor, instead opting to pass three separate bills. >> as i have said many times, i don't walk around this building being worried about a motion to vacate. i have to do my job. we did. i have done here what i believe to be the right thing, and that is allow the house to work its will. you do the right thing and let the chips fall where they may. >> the senate is expected to pass the bill and send it to president biden, who says he will sign them. congresswoman barbara lee said i strongly could not support funding israel, " combines badly needed aid with lethal weaponry." tiktok is one step closer to being banned. an updated version would force bytedance to sell tiktok within

nine months or face a nationwide ban. the new version allows president biden to extend the deadline only if the china- based company proves their intent to sell. the senate is expected to take up the bill quickly. president biden said he will sign it if it gets to his desk. locally owned record stores across the bay area are so breading record store day today. hundreds lined up outside in san jose today. look at that. they are hoping to get their hands on rare vinyls. record store day is a national day for music lovers. each year hundreds of records are released in order of drawing people into small businesses. >> i am excited to see people hitting excited about records and getting what they want. i feel bad for those who don't get what they want, but it's a great community. >> 400 people came out last year. this year, it was more than

550. dancing, drinks, and a lot of food. all at the annual food fest. the festival organizers sent a video of one of the many performances at piedmont park. it celebrates diversity of the bay area. it highlighted music and dance genres like north indian folk opera or tahitian dance, and because it's food festival we were able to try foods and drinks from breweries and wineries. when you look at that picture it's perfect. the trees are blossoming, the sun is out, people are dancing and having a great time. >> lining up without the umbrella like we have had. now i am hungry. now, dublin, 69, clear blue skies for saturday night. oakland was nice, breezy at times, but things are winding down, 64. and san francisco international airport where you can see the trees whistling in the wind. temperatures in the mid 60s. as we take a look at satellite and radar we are clear throughout the majority of the state. any cloud cover is off to the shore, and i don't think it will mess with our plans into sunday when we want to dash out the door and get those errands done. a few high clouds are rolling around, but then we go into sunday morning and sunday afternoon with clear skies. compared to what we had with the dense fog through the morning and mid hours. there is still lots to do, palo alto at the library, earth day festival. you will need your sunglasses and sunscreen. maybe you want to go to the city for the game against the

diamondbacks and the giants. upper 60s. and the winds could get dusty around 15-20 miles an hour, but it should be a good time for baseball this weekend. our temperatures are not only warm, but along the bayshore, 77 in hayward, and we do see more 80s further down in san jose. we keep the good vibes going into monday with 60s along the coast, 68 in san mateo, half moon bay to the upper 70s inland, and we are losing more of the 80s, starting to wind things down and cool things up as drug pressure moves from the bay area. you will feel it on wednesday, thursday, and here comes friday next weekend. we are watching the chance of that rain system develop and form together here as the models update hour by hour. we could be looking at rain chances thursday into friday with more sierra snow. and as far as rent goes we will watch

a 8-year-old boy has become one of the first recipients of a new gene therapy that aims to treat red blood cells. >> reporter: applause and toys today for yusuf from valley stream, who is now a medical pioneer. >> very fortunate, and we feel very lucky that we were able to have this for him. >> reporter: yusuf's parents offered thanks to staff at the hospital, who made use of the first-person to receive fda approved gene therapy for a rare blood disease.

the boy who loves dinosaurs was born with a disorder that prevents his body from producing red blood cells. yusuf has needed twice a month blood transfusions since he was 2 month old . a stem cell transplant could have cured him, but no potential donor was a match, not even his twin sister. >> we were on the verge, always a much resistance coming into the hospital. >> reporter: her son was becoming frustrated, but that changed when his doctors told the family about the gene therapy. >> is transformative, it is changing the way we can approach these diseases. >> reporter: yusuf's own stem cells were modified and used to attack his disease. a one-word answer was all we got today from this shy second- grader. but his doctors say he has needed no transfusions since february. >> he is independent, no more transplants, transfusions,

here is one of the best stories of the day. in pleasanton, hundreds of corgis gathered for the stumpycon. it featured activities for both dogs with short legs, and their owners. we thank our teammate for the shot of her dog right there. all right. some bay area children got quite the experience today, with the chance to learn about their favorite cars at the touch a truck event. proceeds provide healthcare to children in the area. trucks, cars, really cool cars, parading through the streets. you have got fire trucks, old

cars, and a lot of kids seeing things they had never seen before. i think she saw things she had never seen before. thanks for joining us. our climate in crisis special intjo vianey arana: thank you for joining us, i'm meteorologist vianey arana. monday is the start of earth week, and here at nbc bay area, we're tracking our "climate in crisis." it's been a wild winter. the sierras saw a record amount of snowfall that created dangerous conditions for resorts, people getting up to tahoe, and of course, residents. let's gain some insight. the latest winter season brought a nice boost we were looking for. when we started in january 2023, the snowpack was sitting around 30%, but after a series of storms, this is what it looks like as spring unfolds. now, for perspective, the sierra range is more than 400 miles long. its alpine region covers a large part of the state's inland territory. and currently, northern sierra is at 125%.
