being called off. more on the celebration. and aires to put out a flame before it spread to a retirement home. a tiktok ban one step closer to reality, and what comes next. the news at 5:00 starts right now. i'm terry mcsweeney. it's not normally the big celebration we see but plenty were still packed on hippie hill and golden gate parks celebrating 4/20 despite the official celebrations celebrating cannabis culture was canceled. christie smith joins us live. how is everything? >> reporter: well, terry, there have been some absolutely huge crowds out here filling up the grass all the way to where we are standing. of course i 4/20 people light

up, and i haze fills the air. still, it's a very enthusiastic crowd out here at golden gate park. this is what the area looked like at around 4:20 today. we saw a sort of countdown people were doing, and then some people lit up. other people whipped out their cell phones. other people were dancing. it was quite a celebration. earlier people gathered on the hill, where there was drumming and dancing, and of course smoking. 4/20 is a celebration of cannabis culture, and today the people came out to their own day after the city official festival was canceled this year. organizers cited a lack of funding, so there were nor no stages or food. the community and parks department held volleyball in honor of earth day, and we spoke with people who got a spot early today on hippie hill, who said they preferred the more relaxed unofficial

festivities. >> we come over 800 miles every year to do this festival in the park. and even though we knew beforehand it was canceled, we were like you know what? it's san francisco. we will find a party, or be the party. it's okay. one way or the other [ laughter ] >> there are still people that support the movement and come to the park and claim their little spots, and smoke some bud. >> reporter: water was brought out today, and medics were present. they now is the event was canceled, in fact they work encouraging people not to come, but they expected people would come and they wanted to do their part to make sure everyone was safe. police were on motorcycles and another number of city agencies were keeping an eye on things. so not an official 4/20, but i

4/20 nonetheless. christie smith, nbc bay area news. a massive fire this morning in san jose sent up smoke you could see throughout much of the santa clara valley. flames began around 7:30 on north 13th street downtown. firefighters arrived and found the fire started in an abandoned building. the flames threatened a convalescent care facility two doors down. medical staff evacuated patients just in case, moving several from the facility. >> there's been no citizen injuries or fatalities, and no fatalities. there was a possibility we needed to evacuate a convalescent hospital to the north, that was considered, and then those people were put into their facility, and no other threat was detected. >> they were on the scene for

several more hours, mopping up and monitoring hotspots. the cause of the fire is under investigation. a man is dead after being hit by a car in the east bay. it happened before 10:30 last night in hayward. you see where the intersection where a man was hit and killed. the driver stayed at the scene and is cooperating. the cause of the crash is under investigation, it does not appear drugs or alcohol factored in. a somber day for oakland police department. one of their own has succumbed to injuries endured years ago. he was 28 years of age and joined the force in may, 2018, and a few months later he was badly hurt in a crash at the port of oakland. he was responding to a call about a suspicious person when his car collided with another vehicle, then the patrol car careened into a parked semi. he has been dealing with

injuries ever since and had to retire in 2020. he died surrounded by family, including his father, who was an oakland police captain. a major road closure could impact your weekend plans. caltrans has shut down westbound lanes of highway 37 in the north bay. this is for road repairs. this is video from last night moments after it shut down. it runs to sears point. the highway is expected to remain closed until monday morning. the redline uc is the closure. the green is how you get around it. drivers will be directed to 12, and 21. each closure from friday evening until monday morning. caltrans to close eastbound and westbound lanes for major pavement repair. next weekend will close eastbound lanes. caltrans is coming up to ramp up the construction before the popular festival at the end of

may. vary service remains suspended, because of a structural issue at the sausalito pier. under inspection, that pier will remain closed until they can get it fixed. they have no time limit on that. the golden gate ferry says buses will get people to and from san francisco. about 3500 use the ferry every weekday. the house passed an aid package today for aid to ukraine, israel, taiwan, and an ultimatum for tiktok's parent company. flags and cheering were seen after the passage, 311-112, the final vote. alongside the $26 billion aid bill for israel, an $8 billion for taiwan weeks after the senate passed a mammoth bill with aid for ukraine, israel,

and taiwan, plus funding for border security. speaker mike johnson refused to bring that bill to the floor opting to pass three separate bills. >> as i've said many times, i don't walk around this building being worried about a motion to vacate. i'm here to do my job. i'm done here what i believe to be the right thing. that is to allow the house to work its will, and as i said, you do the right thing and let the chips fall where they may. >> the senator is expected to send the bills to the president who said he will sign them. tiktok is one step to being closer to being banned in the united states. the parent company bytedance would be forced to sell or be banned. the senate is expected to take up the bill very quickly, and president biden has said he would sign that tiktok legislation. earth day is monday, but a

lot of people across the bay area are celebrating early. in oakland, about 100 people stepped up for a day of tree planting and education. the city parks and recreation foundation put on this event at arrowhead marsh in mlk regional shoreline park near the airport. the goal is to plant 100 trees. some of the trees are pretty hefty as you can see. it took some muscle to get them located. plenty of helping hands. organizers say in addition to improving community in building the parks the trees have an important role. >> we are overall bringing our trees back. there's been a lot of tree canopy that has been missed over the years, so we are bringing that back. this is part of a long-term goal to bring better quality to our air, and especially in this neighborhood in east oakland. this is the only event

it is the end of the line for some b.a.r.t. trains . the legacy railcars made their last trips ever today. it is over. plenty of people are coming out for the final run along the original b.a.r.t. tracks connecting macarthur to the fremont station. the celebration in oakland parked the special event,

giving people the chance to take one last ride on the old fleet.one man said this played a role in his family history. >> my grandfather walter douglas was the lead engineer responsible for designing the underwater section. he and his wife and my mom lived here while they were doing it in the '60s. >> people had a chance to win memorabilia and special memorabilia merchandise. locally owned record stores across the bay area are celebrating record store day. hundreds lined up outside of san jose record stores in hopes of getting their hands on some rare vinyls. record store day is a national holiday for music lovers. each year hundreds of records are released in hopes of drawing people to small businesses. >> they made only a limited number of copies of each one, and there's a lot of, a lot more demand than there is

supply, and some of them are uncolored final. some of them are rare tracks that have never been released before. and they are all available only at independent record stores. >> streetlight record says this year broke records. last year 400 came to the event. this year, 550 turning out for record day. an exciting experience for some bay area children today they had a chance to learn about their favorite cars at the second annual touch my truck event. proceeds provide home health care to children in the area. those are some classics! classic cars, police cars, construction vehicles, all kinds of stuff, and they were able to check out the vehicles as well. it will be a memorable moment for folks, i'll bet.

children are learning more on science on the science palooza, by a nonprofit to help children learn about science. students and families were invited from seven districts of schools in east san jose. kids were able to try experiments, use signs tools. organizers say the goal is to educate more students about science -related careers. >> i taught seventh grade for over a decade and can attest to the power of hands-on activities with students, and we just want to provide more of those for more kids, so they can grow up and be the next generation. >> and who else was there? how about our own vianey arana, teaching kids about meteorology, and how a green skiing screen works. and thousands of tiny blue blobs on the beach, today.

along 101. still that clearing continues through san francisco. and it will as we go into tonight if you have plans compared to this morning. we did deal with more dense fog, it should mix out for tomorrow, and give way to warmer temperatures with 80s tech on the map as you move further inland. and looking ahead we are looking at cooler temperatures, and the return of the word rain. that won't be until the extended forecast. here's that bit of a chance of high clouds around midnight. again, for sunday, the sunshine is out, and so are those activities you've been wanting to do since we have had rain. we will start the morning off in the 40s and some 50s, with the sunrise at 6:25. until lunchtime you will feel the warmth. especially for the inland valleys, 77. 75 in san jose, 73 in nevada with 60s along the coastline

that will continue into the afternoon keeping the fog away. those nice temperatures from the 70s along the bay to 80s in the for our sunday plans. it will be a great day to visit san francisco, the grand parade with the cherry blossoms at 1:00 p.m. it will be a nice day to continue hanging around the city to sum up the weekend. looking into our work week we will start monday pretty comfortable. you will see the sunshine and wonder, why do i have to go to work? well, we have all got to. so we will see more of that cloud cover rolling around by wednesday, that driver of high pressure will push out, and look at this. we get more rain chances. the models put it a little more to get the compared to this morning. and that will be as we go into late friday and into the weekend for the sierra also looking at a chance of more sierra snow. active weather is still in the picture.

san francisco will remain nice and comfortable over the next couple days. you will feel the sea breeze, and watch out for that rain chance. in our inland valleys i think the carwash will hold until the next couple days. we will celebrate earth day with comfortable temperatures and feel the cold down by wednesday and thursday and watch for the rain chance on friday. so far that seems to be the only day of the week we are painting those rain icons back on. >> great job with the green screen. >> [ laughter ] thanks. protecting california condors. the bay area zoo helping boost their immunity.

a new effort to protect endangered birds, condors, they received their second dose of a vaccine this week to protect from bird flu. researchers say they are battling the biggest out rake in united states history. last year u.s. fish and wildlife partnered with u.s. department of agriculture to approve that vaccine. the hope is that vaccine will prevent the condors from going extinct. there are less than 300 of these birds left in the wild. hundreds of small dogs took over pleasanton today. they call it stumpy con at the alameda county fairgrounds, to celebrate all dogs who walk on short legs.

models. that move one day after stock fell below $150 a share. tesla also dealing with a cyber truck recall due to an issue with the accelerator. if dislodged the pedal can become trapped, causing the driver to speed up unintentionally. nearly 4000 vehicles have been recalled. for the second time this month a california music festival is being postponed. soul bloom was set for three eggs. the cancellation is due to unsafe conditions at the festival site. that festival is now scheduled for august 20th through the 25th. organizers telling ticketholders to keep tickets, use them at the next festival. those who want a refund can ask

the anticipation is building over the uc berkeley the campus community is gearing up for hatch day. you may have heard of annie and archie. people come out to see her baby chicks hatch in real time. there is camera posted outside the campus museum. some people watch the live stream online. let's watch a live look at anne and archie. they are expecting four chicks. they are set to hatch by wednesday they are saying. so we have four days. this is the eighth breeding season for anne. she has a different mate each time.

she has hatched 18 chicks who have gone off to live on their own. and it's going to be tearful weather for chick watching. >> i could c students and crowds cheering her on. we might have to find windbreakers and umbrellas for the end of the week. we are tracking light rain late thursday into friday. >> but we are getting rid of that rain on the weekends rut we were in. we are back at 6:00. hope you can join us then. tonight the major foreign aid bills just passed by the house after months of fiery debate. raucous moments on the house floor
