weather you know what is back. the rain has returned. the soggy start to the weekend for many across the bay area. soccer games at the elementary school in san host canceled due the wet conditions as the field and playground too wet. cynthia, how long is this weekend rain going to stick around this time? >> at least for another day, terry. and it's really extensive. i know californians are sick of this rain for their weekend plans, and it's been heavy at times through the central valley and out in the woods, the mountain snow up into the sierra. and we're not done with that rain. as we go into this evening tracking some of those returns right now through the central parts of the bay. stretching anywhere from the north bay through concord, the tri-valley and parts of the peninsula. a bit of a soggy start in the santa cruz mountains, but we're going to continue to watch this system develop as we go into the next couple of hours with maybe a chance of isolated thunderstorms, cool and windy. it's feeling like winter out there for at least one more day

as we track those spotty showers for tomorrow. but then you know it the warmup ahead for next week. i'll be back in about 15 minutes. cynthia, thanks very much. great resource for our changing weather, of course, our free nbc bay area app. just point your phone camera at that qr code right there on your screen. if you already have our app, this will take you straight to our radar. turning now to breaking these in the middle east. iran has launched more than 100 drones towards israel. this is in retaliation to the strike on an iranian consulate in damascus, syria, several weeks ago that killed two of iran's top commanders. just after 3:00 in the morning sunday there. right now air-raid sirens are sounding in major cities. the biden administration expects iran to also launch dozens of missiles at israeli government sites. the u.s. and other nations anticipated this would happen after israel's april 1st strike in syria. the united states has restricted travel for u.s. embassy workers and their family in israel. israel aims to intercept any

missiles headed their way, of course. and nbc news reports u.s. forcevise also downed iran launched attack drones. both the u.s. and israel have coordinated a response. jordan is reportedly close its airspace. it is expected many of the drones launched from iran would flyover jordan. jordan says interference in its air traffic has affected its gps system prompting planes in the area to use alternative navigation systems. many u.s. government employees and their family members in israel also on restricted travel orders. no one is to travel outside the greater tel aviv, jerusalem areas until further notice. it's important to add iran is now saying after the launch of all these drones, quote, the matter can be deemed concluded and will only attack again if israel retaliates for these

drone attacks. nbc "nightly news" team following the latest developments on iran's action against israel. we'll have a full report coming up at 5:30 right after this newscast. a new twist in the controversy surrounding the former mayor of windsor. he resigned in 2021 following allegations of sexual assault. attorneys who represent seven of the women accusing dominic foppoli spoke out in santa rosa today. they blasted a decision to sus spend a criminal investigation into foppoli. lawyers for the alleged victims want to know why the accounts of 15 women are not enough to bring criminal charges and vow to continue their case in civil court. >> the reality is the state of california is saying although there's compelling evidence from multiple sources on 15 separate accounts of rape, he is about to walk free.

as women we need more voices because for some reason 15 women's statement isn't enough in the state of california. >> we reached out to his attorney for a response today, have not heard back yet. previously foppoli had denied all allegations. several east bay firefighters responding to a call for help ended up in the hospital. this happened southbound 680 walnut creek. crews responded to crash, that's when another car hit their truck which was blocking the left lane. two people in that truck were badly hurt, paramedics rushed them to the hospital. four firefighters also taken to the hospital, but we're told they're going to be okay. behind me right now a live look at san francisco, and that is where a merchant says business is not booming. business owners say a protected bike lane in the middle of the street is to blame for the problem, so now he has started a hunger strike to bring attention to what's happening and push for the lane to be removed. nbc bay area's kristi smith

reports from san francisco. >> reporter: we spoke with the merchant behind the hunger strike and at the center of it bike lanes that go down the middle of the street. people around here seem to have strong opinions about them and differing views. >> i'm doing a hunger strike for 30 days, so water and once in a while juice. >> reporter: he's now nearly a week into a month long hunger strike. >> protesting the way i've been treated by the city and ignored. >> reporter: his family owns yasmin restaurant and gross mission. >> the main problem is the bike lane. >> reporter: it runs down the center while cars drive in the outside lane. >> they took away parking, made a commercial zone. we had a lot of tickets, we're still getting a lot of tickets. you can't unload and load your groceries. >> reporter: he believes it's had a ripple effect on businesses. >> there's no more customers that want to come here because

there's no parking. customers sit outside and ask me what to do and it's very frustrating. there's a huge loss of business because of the bike lane. >> reporter: and he's watching closely. >> five businesses last week closed. >> reporter: how much the lanes contributed to changes in the area it's hard to say, today we spoke to bicyclists using the lane about their experience. >> it's working very well for me. i feel there's less traffic with cars because there's only one lane for each car. but in general i feel safer with the lane. >> i do like the lane. i take it to work. i commute on these lanes. i think they're very helpful. >> reporter: another bicyclist who didn't want to go on camera told us he does not care for the lanes or use them. in a statement sfmta says it's talking with businesses on valencia and plans to continue to collaborate to work on solutions that both protect both businesses and bicyclists on the

corridor. david stez his business closed in november. meanwhile he described the change he would like to see. >> just take out the bike lane, let's get back and let's get back valencia, please. >> reporter: christie smith, nbc bay area news. investigators are investigating a homicide. police say they responded yesterday to a man unresponsive. he later died despite lifesaving measures. anyone with information is asked to call susoon city police. south bay lawmakers are pushing to improve protections for victims of domestic violence and sexual violence. they were promoting the so-called survivors protection act. that is a bill that ensures abuse survivors cans seek restraining orders in california even if they move somewhere else. he says it could save lives and give added peace of mind to survivors. that bill heads to the assembly next. >> the battle between big tech and journalism in california

continues. google now says it is removing some links to california news websites merchandise this is in response to a state bill. the california journalism preservation act would require tech giants including google, facebook, and microsoft to pay news organizations a journalism usage fee. the thinking here is that tech companies make money from news articles that help them attract users but the platforms don't pay the journalists or news organizations who then miss out on the advertising revenue generated they their own work. google wrote in a blog posted today the act would create a, quote, level of business uncertainty no company could accept. the company says it's removing news links for a small percentage of californians as a short-term test. the city of san francisco is honoring the legacy of caesar chavez and the movement he championed. a festival now under way in the mission. there are low riders there,

vendors, lots of arts going on. all a way for the city to recognize the contributions of chavez to workers and the latino community. and one mayoral candidate introduced a new way to honor that legacy. he wants the city to officially recognize march 31st as caesar chavez day. >> he fought for immigrants. he fought for front line workers in the fields, in the agricultural industry. there's still abuses, they're still underhoused, still underpaid. these are all part of his legacy we need to carry on, honor, and recognize. >> the state and federal governments officially observe caesar chavez day march 31st. a fast friendship borne out of a heart stopping experience at a bart station. meet the two men now forever linked after both stepped in to rescue a man stuck on the tracks and they got there just in the nick of time. plus a cultural tradition

a routine morning commute quickly turned into a lifesaving

effort after a man jumped onto the tracks in san francisco. happened thursday morning at the 24th and mission bart station. two strangers heroically pulled the man to safety just moments before that train came down the tracks. both say they believe the map was suffering a mental episode. the two strangers parted ways. later one of them posted on reddit trying to find the other man who helped step in at just the right time. >> i feel like i need to figure out a way to connect with that guy i just shared this crazy experience with, the guy that helped me pull this guy off the tracks just now, just glad you were there. >> get this, turns out the pair live around the corner from each other. isn't that wild? after connecting they made plans to grab coffee this weekend. what a conversation that'll be. san francisco welcoming spring with its cherry blossom festival. thousands of people flocked to japan town today. the opening ceremony of that

festival now in its 57th year. organizers say it's a celebration of japanese and japanese american culture featuring live performances, a tea ceremony, many more traditions, and it all kmaz as the japanese prime minister gifted new cherry blossom trees to the white house. >> i think it's a really good strong sign of connection between the two countries. and so, yeah, and even behind me i have cherry blossom trees, so it's good symbol of the community. >> the japanese cultural and community center hosting more events throughout this coming week. it's going to culminate in a parade next sunday at 1:00. our mike inoue is mcing. i just wanted to see more of the event. cynthia joining us now, and a little rain didn't stop that. >> no. the community is coming

together. i mean that bart story was incredible. people are out there celebrating the cherry blossom festival. >> yes. >> so we're going to continue to, you know, live life even if we do have a little rain on the windshield. and we're looking at our windshields right now through our camera network right there. san francisco it is gloomy, temperatures very cold in the mid-50s there. and the some calm winds after a soggy start to the area. oakland just saw a shower, 51. now we are back to winter in san jose, 53 degrees at this hour and the wind out of the east at 13 miles an hour. really impressive totals for mt. pam and the mountains and milpitas did well, almost an inch there. and go over to concord and some cities in the east bay struggling to make it to that quarter inch mark. we're getting a more of that rain through part of the east bay, along the east bay shoreline, parts of san mateo

county and the north bay as more of this system continues to push on east into the central valley. here's how it looks the next couple of hour. i know you're trying to make those late night saturday plans. you're still going to need to bring an umbrella and jacket in parts of the north bay. and continue to watch cells mainly through the central coast with some embedded thunderstorm chances in there. and really through the rest of the night while most of us are sleeping, those rain chances will start to taper off and we'll actually wake up on sunday to a little bit more of that clearing. but here it comes again into the afternoon. some light rain that we're tracking through parts of the north bay, solano county and out towards the tri-valley before it's gone and it's out of here. and we're going to start to warm things up and a change to the pattern a little bit. tomorrow temperatures just a touch warmer but 50s and 60s. it won't be until we get into monday and tuesday start to gradually warm up here. those temperatures 60s in san francisco to the up upper 60s east bay and into the south bay.

and some warmer weather still on the way as we build this ridge of high pressure for the middle of the week. 70s and 80s for our inland valleys. and then we'll start to cool things down as we go into friday and saturday. but our long-range outlook doesn't look like rain returns for next weekend. this might be it for a little while at least and before the earthquakes game tonight happening at paypal park with the men tonight, the women tomorrow. and i think the stands will be wet for tonight but chilly at times, and those wind speeds that will kick up into the 15 to 20 mile an hour range. so enjoy this transition from the wet to the warm in san francisco and our inland valleys, 60s, 70s, and 80s. so we have it all. >> you have such a positive vibe going. you talk about all the positive stories and put this positive spin. oh, a little bit of rain in the forecast. >> you know, keep moving. >> cynthia, thank you. still ahead a historic moment for the u.s. and not a real bright one. the first criminal case involving former president trump

president to stand trial in a criminal case. jury selection begins monday. potential jurors going to answer 42 questions to determine whether they can be impartial in the criminal hush money case brought by the manhattan district attorney. melissa russo from our sister

station in new york tells us what to expect as that trial gets under way. >> reporter: coming to lower manhattan monday under spotlight and tight security, the first ever criminal trial of a former president, not to mention presumptive nominee. court officers say they're being redeployed by the dozens from every other courthouse in the city. with the scene at trump's arraignment year here was any sign, the trial could be a spectacle for weeks or even months to come. trump is charged with 34 low level felony counts of falsifying business records to cover up efforts to hide scandalous secrets from voters during a 2016 campaign including the stormy daniels situation. at the center of the case a $130,000 hush money payment mislabeled as legal services. the plan is to with hold the identities of jurors from the public because of security concerns.

i didn't realize deaf people enjoyed music let alone live music. so i started talking with the interpreter and communicate wg the deaf people through the interpreter, and come to find out deaf people are just like hearing people. they love music, but they have a lot of challenges and barriers to getting access to live entertainment. >> reporter: for executive producer matt maxey, the issue is personal. >> the more they have the accessibility we need i find feeling more free, more involved, feeling more normalized where, hey, i don't have to go above and beyond just to feel equal. >> several big artists appear in the doc including kelly clarkson, chance the rapper, and andre 3,000 and waka flaka flame also taking part. he tells us he gained insith into the deaf community after

you want to talk to. >> there's still some spotty showers tonight so not a bad idea to bring your umbrella and also your jacket. temperatures today only made it into the mid-50s in some spots, and we have another rain chance tomorrow. in the afternoon mainly but to the edges of main county, solano county and the tri-valley. so not everyone will see it. and then we'll gradually start to warm up through the week, not only in san francisco where you see the 70s return mid-week but inland talking upper 70s tuesday, wednesday, and thursday. those 80s return. we really have to get through this weekend stretch to get to the sunshine ahead. >> another wet weekend. >> it is. >> hope it's going to end next weekend for folks, though.
