♪♪ good morning. it is saturday, april 13th, 7:00. and this is a live look outside. gloomy, rainy over the golden gate bridge, but still a gorgeous look to start our weekend. and we want to thank you so much for starting it with us. i'm kira klapper. cynthia has a quick look at our micro climate forecast. i saw a limit rain this morning and then i saw a lot of rain. looks like a lot behind you. >> it's waking people up this morning. winter has returned once again, middle of spring. some of those heavy returns right now are being picked up into san jose, the santa cruz mountains also getting that mountain snow. so overall, it's a really messy

morning out there on our roadways. that continues to go through the central bay, up to the north bay. north bay mountains also getting a dusting of that snow as we make our way throughout the day. and we're going to continue with some on and off showers as we go throughout our saturday with a chance also of seeing some thunderstorms develop and really gusty winds. tomorrow also a chance of seeing some spotty showers for our sunday plans. but then you know the pattern. we warm up next week. we'll talk about that in 15 minutes. back to you, kira. >> thanks. we begin with breaking news this morning if you're hitting the road in the east bay, this big rig crash may have you rethinking your route. it happened on eastbound 580 in livermore around 8 last night. you can see that big rig overturned. this morning, two lanes of eastbound 580 are still blocked off with traffic backing up. minor injuries have been reported. this, by the way, is the third semi truck crash in just the last three days causing traffic backups in the east bay.

we have new details this morning in the east bay crash that killed a 9-year-old girl. the driver of the car she was in now faces felony charges of hit and run and child abuse. investigators say the suv veered off 680 at the 242 split in concord early last sunday morning. it rolled several times before landing upside down in the median. a 9-year-old girl from oregon was ejected and died. she was not wearing a seat belt. five other people were hurt, including three children. the 22-year-old driver ran away but police later arrested him north of the bay area. he is in a martinez jail and set to appear in court monday. bail set at $1 million. turning now to the south bay where the owner of an e sports gaming bar is speaking out after being targeted by thieves, not just once, but eight times since opening their doors in 2017.

and three times just this year alone. as "today in the bay's" the last break in cost them tens of thousands of dollars. >> reporter: gaming, cards, painting, food, drinks, this is guild house in san jose. >> this is the great hall. on the other side we have the parlor. the great hall has a party atmosphere, people grabbing beers, a lot louder. and you step in the parlor, the atmosphere absolutely changes. >> it opened in 2021 during the pandemic to give people space to hang out and do what they love. but the owners have be dealing with burglaries. eight in the nearly three years they've been open and three just this year. the latest happened late last month captured on security cameras. thieves cut through the back entrance, wheeled away the safe. all while avoiding alarms and sensors. >> tens of thousands. >> until now, they stayed quiet to avoid being seen as

vulnerable, but the owners say they're tired of it. so they're speaking up. >> i think our goal is this will happen less frequently, not just to us, but to our neighbors as well. >> reporter: and got the attention of the mayor and the city's new police chief, and vowed to help with more foot and bike patrols and hopefully in the future additional staffing. >> i will be speaking with the investigators to make sure we're following any leads that could lead us to be able to identify these suspects. >> reporter: on social media, the owners have gotten messages of support from loyal customers. >> as you can see, it can get packed here on a friday night. those who come here often tell us this feels like a community for them. >> i love this place. it's just really fun place to come to, hang out. >> we had so much positive reaction from sharing our story. people saying i'm going to come this weekend. we're going to support you. >> reporter: the owners say they're also re-enforcing entrances and getting overnight security. jocelyn moran, nbc bay area news. the owners of one of the oldest jewelry stores in oakland's chinatown are determined to stay open despite

this violent and devastating robbery. security video shows the thieves rushing into the jewelry on wednesday, smashing jewelry cases with hammers, grabbing anything in sight. you can see the female owner ducking for cover. she ran into the back office when her husband came out with a gun. luckily that scared the thieves away but not before they grabbed the most expensive pieces. >> many people get in here. we don't know what i do. i feel scared. even right now my heart is still hard. 40 years, we work a long time, seven days a week, no day off. right now i'm 70 years old already. now i still working again, again. work again. >> adding to the burden the store no longer has insurance after a rise in their premiums. the community has set up a go fund me account to help. in the north bay, a trusted

teacher and coach is facing more and more criminal charges related to abusing at least one student. brad rowal is accused of using his position at american canyon high school to sexually assault at least one student. court documents show that victim is just 15. yesterday morning the long-time p.e. teacher and cross country coach was arrested for the second time in just one week. he now faces 21 charges including lewd act with the a child, illegal sexual intercourse and possession of child porn. parents and students are shocked. >> disconcerting as a parent because it's something you don't expect, you know, the people that are supposed to protect your kids are the ones that you expect to behave properly. >> the fact that this is happening is really heart breaking. and it's really just disappointing overall. >> a spokeswoman for the napa valley unified school district tells us if the allegations are true, the district will take appropriate disciplinary actions which would include firing him.

going to take a big turn now at 7:07. today, san francisco mayor london breed embarks on one of her most high profile trips since taking office. breed is leading a 30-person delegation to china. planned stops include hong kong, beijing and shanghai. earlier this week the mayor told us her goals include bringing more economic opportunities to san francisco, boosting tourism with china and, as you just saw there, securing an agreement to bring pandas to the sf zoo. >> our goal is to, you know, enter into major agreements and make san francisco significant to china and to let them know that we are open to the business relationship that could be developed as a result. i mean, there's a lot we want to accomplish. and of course, a lot we want to bring back, too. >> the delegation includes asian community leaders and business owners as well as the head of the city's chamber of commerce. the mayor also says she hopes to expand airline routes to attract more visitors to the bay area

from china. speaking of chinatown now, thousands of people went out in san francisco's chinatown for another night market. it was so packed, in fact that mayor london breed is promising to work with organizers to close down even more streets for the monthly event. it's all happening in a neighborhood where some business owners say they still feel the lingering impacts of the pandemic. today in the bay takes us there. >> reporter: they came from near -- >> across the bridge. richmond. >> reporter: and far to eat at san francisco's chinatown night market. >> it's amazing. i love everything i've try so far. >> reporter: lily lo got a grant to organize monthly night markets this year. ♪♪ that seem to be growing in popularity. >> this is one way to create jobs and bring in more income. people really excited about it. only do once a month and people want to do every week. this is something very hard. it's a lot of work. >> reporter: the market runs three blocks on grant.

>> i want to take this opportunity to thank the chinatown -- >> reporter: but seeing the crowds herself, mayor london breed. >> well, this is bigger. we're going to work with lily to close down additional streets. we need more room. we have so many people. this is even bigger than the last time. >> reporter: for some china shops, it's a time in between night markets where they struggle. >> last couple weeks we quiet in chinatown. really quiet. but today, look. so many people come out. >> reporter: this is the opening of the first chinese queer museum in chinatown at 41 ross artist and residents showing off inclusivity. >> we want to uplift, it's a welcoming place that is welcoming to the lgbtq community as well. >> so many ways she's saying that what she cannot do in china is doing here in chinatown because there's so much connection with the chinese diaspora here. >> reporter: new ways for people to enjoy a historic neighborhood. >> so many people come out for

good morning. welcome back. clouds and rain as we look towards san francisco from our emoryville camera. a gloomy morning might lead to a gloomy weekend. we'll have your full micro climate forecast coming up in just a few minutes. but first, emmy-award winning director and screen writer eleanor coppela has died. she was married to director, producer and screen writer frances ford coppola. he won a prime-time emmy about the making of her husband's film-apocalypse now. they had three children, two growing up to be film directors. coppola died surrounding by family at home in rutherford in napa county. she was 87 years old.

on the coast, convoys in and out of big sur are being called off today because of the rain. the convoys will restart tomorrow. highway 1 was damaged during storms late last month and cal trans now expects initial stabilization repairs to be down by memorial day, that's the end of may. full repairs could cost up to $25 million. if you plan on visiting yosemite any time soon, entry into the park is about to get more difficult. beginning today, you'll need a reservation to drive through yosemite on some days. throughout june, those days include saturday, sunday and holidays. then in july, you'll need a reservation every single day. new spots will open up each morning at 8:00 a.m. as you might imagine, they go fast. the park says be ready to act quickly. and if you are heading to yosemite, maybe you would like to spend time somewhere a little

less rustic, the national park is offering up two new glamping sites. one is already open and offers up 30 tents, 12 cabins, some of them even include kitchenettes. one night in a premium tent will run you $200. another glamping site is under construction and will open up this spring. it includes tents outfitted with electricity, private bathrooms and sites with fire pits. a suite tent runs about $440 a night. we want to introduce you to one california tennis star now who is proof you never grow out of your favorite sport and never too old to win a championship. sunday, april 21st. some kids in san francisco are in for a big surprise today. children in the bay view will be given brand new bikes and helmets. the rotterry club of san francisco is giving away tse bikes. the event srts at 8 this morning andoes until 2:30. th first half of the day will be spent building the bikes. families who are getting a bike can pick them up at 1:00 p.m. it's at togethersf on mari-posa street. the streets will be closed for the event. well, it's one of the most impactful and delicious events of the year in wine country. and it's happening this weekend. some of the bay area's best chefs will compete, pairing their dishes with some of the best cabernets all in the name of charity. and there are some hollywood celebrities involved as well. this is the annual cabernet cookoff happening today at hall

wines. 14 chefs from notable restaurants are bringing their skills to the vineyard. those who have tickets get to taste, sip and vote on the best dish. among the judges, chef ken frank, actress katherine o'hara, brian baumgartner from the office and our very own, i think the biggest celebrity, raj. trending this morning, a hat, a fish bowl and a boot. you might be wondering what those things have in common. they can all be bought at 711, at least for today? it's bring your own cup day. for 1.99 you can bring anything as a slurpee cup as long as it fits under the nozzle. it's about 10 inches tall. your container has to be watertight and clean. very interesting there. it is 7:20 right now. my son's school allows you to

bring birthday treats. and his friend's mom just brought 35 slurpees the other day. i was like mom of the year. i would never agree to that. time now to check in with cynthia for a look at our micro climate forecast. >> it's more like hot chocolate weather right now and warm cup of coffee. >> but a couple days ago it was hot. >> we'll go back to that. we are starting off gloomy this saturday. temperatures in the 50s. it's really extensive system that has brought winter back to the bay area once again. rain, wind and mountain snow up to the north bay and some of the highest peaks down here in the south bay. so if you have anything outside that you really need to bring in or have to step outside during the small pockets of breaks in the rain, it's going to get really gusty. anywhere from 15 to 30 miles an hour as we go into lunch time and again this afternoon as that system continues to rotate and make its way down the coast. so that hour by hour outlook for

you, i know lots of people have plans. they've been like, cynthia, why is it raining on the weekend. i can't control the weather. mother nature does that on its own. we'll continue to see the rain pushing on to the central valley and bringing those areas that you see shaded in white and the pink, that's that wintry mix on our highest peeks of the bay area. it will continue to push on through. there could be some pockets for you to dash outside really quickly. but times of rain, even that chance of seeing some afternoon thunderstorms through the marin county coastline and into parts of san francisco and half moon bay this afternoon but we clear out for our saturday, late saturday night, plans and early on into sunday. this rain is going to come in waves as we go on into sunday afternoon with one more quick pass as we go from the north bay to the tri-valley and into the south for around dinner time tomorrow night. rain totals right now, highest, of course, along the coastline and our santa cruz mountains and further on into morgan hill and the central valley. about an inch or so as we go on into the next couple days. also bringing the snow on the

30th birthday, max vowed to do ten to celebrate his 10th birthday. our story focussed on his first act, making and donating sandwiches to a san francisco shelter. >> just stoked to see myself on tv. >> reporter: and max was clearly stoked to continue his mission. his next act, collecting hundreds of coats and then donating them to three nonprofits. then it was 200 valentine kit for the ronald mcdonald house at stanford. next working with kids against hunger to make a remarkable dotion of food packages. >> we packaged 000 little baggies and they were shipped off to ukraine. >> reporter:inally donation of new clothing to the va hospital. if you're counting, that's five down, five to go. although max promises that's not the end for him. >> want to keep doing them, even after my ten acts.

♪♪ good morning. it is saturday, april 13th. 7:30. a live look outside. wet out there as we bid you good morning from the san mateo bridge. lots of cars out there. hope you're taking it slowly if you're headed out this morning. if not, thank you so much for starting your weekend with us. i'm kira klapper. cynthia has a peek at our micro climate forecast. i guess that's it, rain. >> rain on this saturday once again. we're used to it now. and through the san mateo bridge, down to the south bay is where i'm seeing some of those heavier returns right now with our satellite and radar for parts of the santa cruz mountain, san jose, down to gilroy and up into millpedes and the dublin interchange this morning. it continues through the central bay and up to the north bay on our highest peaks. just a little dusting of some fresh snow for our mountain sides. our temperatures will be cool once again, only making it into the mid 50s for the tri-valley and upper 50s for the south bay and the north bay.

really slick along 101 in san jose with a chance of seeing some thunderstorms develop later on this afternoon with some gusty winds at times. the rain should start to taper out for tomorrow. and then give way to some warmer temperatures. my full micro climate forecast in about ten minutes. back to you. >> thank you. new this morning, seven people are dead after a stabbing rampage at a mall in sydney, australia. the scene broke out around 3:00 p.m. australia time at the westfield junction mall. police say a man entered the mall and began attacking. several victims were hospitalized in serious or critical condition, including an infant. single police officer nearby responded and she shot and killed that suspect. police say they believe the 40-year-old man acted alone and say there are early reasons to believe this was not terrorism. on a much lighter note a routine morning commute quickly turned into a life-saving effort

after a man jumped on to the tracks. two strangers, in fact, sprung into action, pulling him to safety moments before the train arrived. the two strangers parted ways following the incident but reconnected with the help of a reddit post. "today in the bay" pete has their story. >> he needs to get off the tracks. there's a train coming. >> reporter: it's one of the many thoughts running through the mind of josh highman, who was waiting for a bart train at 24th and mission but noticed a man on the train tracks. another commuter down the way saw the same man moments earlier who appeared to be having a mental episode. >> and being pretty sporadic and unpredictable, talking to themselves, punching the air a few other things. >> reporter: with the train fast approaching, both josh and blake had to act quickly. >> both looking at the guy and looking at each other and he runs over and is like, give me your hand. at the same time i'm rung over

there, too. i said give me your other hand. and we kind of just like had to re-adjust a little bit and then kind of dragged him off the tracks. >> they were able to save the man's life, who was emotional but eventually hopped on another train. josh and blake also parted ways, getting on the next train to work. but on the bart ride, josh realized something -- >> i feel like i need to figure out a way to connect with that guy i just shared this crazy experience with. >> reporter: so he decided to do his first-ever reddit posting, saying -- >> to the guy that helped me pull this guy off the tracks just now. glad you were there. >> reporter: blake found the post and replied, that was me. a co-worker showed it to him after blake told them the story and realized it was the same incident. >> it was happenstance that my co-worker saw that. so i comment on it. >> the two strangers have become friends and actually live around the corner from each other and plan to grab coffee this weekend. a friendship born out of a

heroic act and are both glad they were at the right place at the right time. >> it's tough to know when it's the right time to do something and when it's not because the last thing you want to do is put yourself in harm's way. >> i feel like a ton of people would have done the same exact thing as i did given the circumstance. and it's just good to know that, you know, blake is one of those people, too. attorneys for a north bay legal firm will speak today after the recent decision not to file criminal charges against the former mayor of windsor. the state attorney general's office recently suspended a criminal investigation, tied to dominic after multiple women accused him of sexual assault. he later resigned as windsor's mayor back in 2021. state prosecutors say they lack sufficient evidence to file charges. attorneys representing some of those women will speak outside the sonoma county courthouse to talk about a possible civil

case. former president donald trump said during a press conference that he would absolutely testify in his upcoming hush money trial. trump, who has repeatedly called the trial a scam, is charged with 34 counts of first degree falsifying business records. his comments came during a news conference which the former president and the speaker of the house, mike johnson, held at mar-a-lago to address election integrity. jury selection in the trial begins the day after tomorrow. the trial is expected to last six to eight weeks. trump is not required to testify in his own criminal trial. vice president kamala harris, meanwhile, spoke in arizona yesterday. her visit comes as the arizona supreme court reinstated that 1864 law that bans nearly all abortions. the vice president is pushing for abortion rights. she called former president trump, quote, the architect of the healthcare crisis.

harris added that the fight over reproductive rights is about freedom. >> what has happened here in arizona is a new inflection point. it has demonstrated once and for all thatover turning roe was just the opening act, just the opening act, of a larger strategy to take women's rights and freedoms. part of a full-on attack state by state on reproductive freedom. >> trump recently said the decision on abortion should be left up to the states. but he also said arizona went too far. new this morning, navy special forces from the iranian armed forces took over an israeli affiliated container ship near the strait of hormuz today. the msc aires was being transferred to iranian

territorial waters. israeli leaders say this is a violation of international law. this all comes as the u.s. is preparing for a possible retaliation attack on israel by iran. president biden saying he expects it. nbc's hala gorani is in israel. >> reporter: the pentagon repositioning assets, including fighter jets and ships in the mid east in preparation for a potential iranian attack against israel. as president biden is warning a strike could happen soon. >> my expectation is -- >> what is your message to iran in this moment? >> don't. >> reporter: a u.s. intelligence assessment warns an iranian attack could include a swarm of drones or land attack cruise missiles, hitting israeli diplomatic or consular facilities. all almost two weeks after iran vowed to retaliate for a bombing on its embassy compound in syria

that it blames on israel where several top iranian military officials were killed. iran is a top backer of hamas and hezbollah and iran supreme leader has warned israel will be, quote, punished. president biden vowing support if a strike happens. >> we will help defend israel and iran will not succeed. >> reporter: the question now as the region braces for a possible retaliatory attack by iran is when and how teheran will choose to react. a milestone now for the san francisco police department. it celebrated yesterday implementing 272 reform recommendations from the u.s. and state departments of justice. installing those recommended reforms was one of the mandates given to sfpd chief bill scott when he was first hired back in 2017. they were recommended after a series of officer-involved shootings in 2016.

well, the rain and i say good morning to you on this saturday as we're waking up to another soggy one, especially down here in the south bay. not only seeing the rain with some heavy returns at times, but also that mountain snow throughout the santa cruz mountains up towards mount hamilton. quite a dusting that we'll see over the next couple days. not only in the south bay mountains but tracking through

mount diablo and widespread rain central bay and north bay the mountains getting a dusting of fresh snow. we'll continue with the showers throughout the day. throughout the weekend really. at times, it will push on east, giving way to just a quick chance to run outside before we hunker down once again this afternoon with a chance of some thunderstorms developing through marin county, san francisco and out towards the coastline. don't let your guard down as we go throughout the day. but for your saturday night plans, things should calm down a little bit and into sunday morning as well with the rain staying off to the sides of the bay area before we get another quick round of rain into the afternoon, coming down from the north bay to the south bay right around dinner time and that will be about it. our weekend also involves some snow up into tahoe, about 1 to a 5 inch. bring those chains in case. i want to help you enjoy your weekend and don't get stuck. cherry blossom festival in san francisco also includes rain. bring jackets and umbrellas.

some better news, i guess. the deadline to file your state and federal income tax returns is monday. but here is where the good news comes in. you can get free, in-person help today. consumer investigator explains where, when and what to bring. >> good morning. our local irs offices are usually a monday through friday operation. but this weekend, considering the tax deadline is monday, they're going to open their doors today at three bay area locations. in oakland, on clay, in san jose on south market, in san francisco on golden gate avenue. irs says it's going to open the doors at 9 this morning, close them at 4 this afternoon. you do not need an appointment. it's first-come, first-served. the irs says bring your forms, bring your identification and bring your questions. they're going to help you out. but they will not fill out your

you can see that massive big rig overturned. well, this morning, two lanes of eastbound 580 are still blocked off with traffic backing up. this is the third semi truck crash in just the last three days causing traffic backups in the east bay. the owner of a popular e-sports bar in the south bay is speaking out after his business was burglarized for the third time just this year. in the latest break-in, thieves wheeled away the safe. the guildhouse shared this surveillance video from a few weeks back on march 26th. owners tell us they didn't originally want to go public for fear of prompting more crime. but after boosting their security measures and still being burglarized they acknowledge that strategy wasn't working. the san jose mayor and san jose police chief are vowing to boost police presence downtown. today, san francisco mayor london breed is embarking on one
