12:00 pm
hi, everyone. i'm zinhle essamuah. >> i'm kate snow. "nbc news daily" starts right now.
12:01 pm
today is wednesday, april 10th, 2024. a battle is brewing and new fallout after a arizona supreme court upholds a civil war law to ban abortion, and how it could rage on into november. and a boy is shot by an officer when he is holding a toy gun, and the outrage growing to accountability. and sticker shock. the price of goods is rising more than economists want, and gas and rent and car insurance is getting more expensive and why relief is further away than ever. and here comes the sun. the spring break may have passed, but it is time to think about summer vacation and why you should book now, and how you can save. >> yeah, i am thinking about summer. >> i'm ready. >> we begin this hour with the
12:02 pm
historic abortion ruling in arizona. >> the supreme court is upholding a law from the mid-1800s, and the ban is with almost no exceptions. the abortion is a felony and anyone who helps a woman get an abortion could face five years in prison. >> the democratic leaders saying they will not uphold this ruling, and katie hobbs is calling on the legislature to repeal it, and a chance that the voters could have a final say, and a push to have a ballot measure in november has racked up hundreds of thousands of signatures, and some arizonians are coming to grips with the decision, and others are celebrating it. >> i feel like everything that my grandmother and mother and the generations before us, and all of that work that we have put in has not been for anything. >> i think that it is going to save lives. >> i think that ballot measures and stuff like that is in the
12:03 pm
works and so i am not super worried, but i will be worried after november. and our washington correspondent yamiche alcindor is joining us. how soon could this go into effect, and does it matter if the governor says she will not enforce it? >> this is a total ban on abortions in arizona. and currently, the abortions are allowed up to 15 weeks of pregnancy, and still no exception for rape and incest in arizona. and last year, the governor katie hobbs granted the state attorney general to stop any county prosecution for alleged violation of abortion law, and she is saying it is still in place, and the state a.g. was on "morning joe" talking about how she and other states who allow abortion are coordinating. this is what she says. >> if that situation were to happen and if young girl were to be rape and pregnant, and we need to get her out of the
12:04 pm
state, i believe we could get her out of the state, and we would do everything that we could. we would also fight in court to prevent, you know, her from being exposed. >> so very strong words there from the state a.g., but there could be legal challenges from stance to those who oppose abortion and praising this ruling. kate and zinhle. >> and donald trump trump said that the supreme court went too far with this ruling. >> did arizona go too far? >> yes, they did. that is going to be straightened out, and as you know, it is all about the state's rights, and it will be straightened out. i am sure that the governor and everybody else is going to bring it back to within reason, and it will be taken care of very quickly. >> the nbc news exit polls are showing from 2022 that 62% of to arizona voters said that it should be legal in all if not most cases, and yamiche, some big republican names on the ballot in arizona, and how are
12:05 pm
they responding to the ruling? >> interestingly, the republicans in arizona are distancing themselves from the decision. doug ducey the republican governor of arizona who signed 15-week abortion restriction said that this ruling is not his preferred outcome. the arizona senate candidate kerri lake said that this 1864 law was a great law a couple of years ago, but yesterday, she said that she opposed this ruling and called it out of step with arizonians. and her opponent called her out for changing the opinion and is doubling down on abortion access. kate and zinhle. >> thank you, yamiche. and now, there is a widespread call for clemency, but the inmate was executed. >> members of the family had petitioned governor to stop his execution, but to no avail.
12:06 pm
here is nbc correspondent valerie castro. >> outside of the courthouse, the family called for the governor to grant clemency. >> it is underscoring not to kill. why do we kill people who kill people to show that killing is wrong. >> reporter: and brian dorsey was killed by lethal injection, and his final statement said that i am truly deeply sorry, and words do not hold my guilt and shame. he was convingted after the murder of his cousin and her husband ben. but his behavior in years in prison won over more than 70 correction officers who called for a stay of execution saying that he had been a model inmate. and one officer said when you spend time around brian like i have, you can tell that he has changed, and another said that the brian i know does not deserve to be executed and even
12:07 pm
some of the family members who dorsey is related to called on governor mike parson to grant clemency. >> we are not asking for you to let him out, but we need you to save his life. >> if brian is executed, i will be heartbroken. >> there have been numerous attempts for repeal, and the execution would deliver justice and provide closure according to the governor, and the last statement said to all on every side of this, i carry no ill will only acceptance and understanding. >> there were aggravating factors that made this a disturbing case. he assaulted his cousin sara's body while her 4-year-old daughter was in the home. but you can imagine that some of the members of the family were in support of the execution. and this is the 11th execution of the state carried out in the
12:08 pm
governor's term. >> valerie castro, thank you. and we are following big economic news this hour. >> a new report from the labor department shows that inflation was hotter than a year ago. the inflation data has tanked the markets in concerns that the fed is not lowering inflation rates any time soon. >> interest rates any time soon. >> right. thank you. >> and now, caleb silver says that we have been tracking dow all day, and it is looking rough, and why is that and why does this report bother people so much? >> because of what you said, the fed was considering lowering the interest rates about three times this year, and this is supposed to begin around june, and that is what they messaged to world and because inflation is hot, and the labor market is hot, there is no need to lower the interest rates, and remember, the fed lowers the interest rates when the economy needs a
12:09 pm
shot in the arm, and it is firing on all cylinders and so we have to be with these high prices for a little while longer. a year ago it was 3.7%, but it is not near the 2% where the fed wants it. >> okay. caleb, you are talking economy overall, but where are consumers feeling the pinch? >> food and shelter, and we can't get away from it, because the gas prices alone up 20 cents in the last month, and gas drives up the prices higher for everything. when you go through the grocery store, juice is up 20% year over year, and baby formula and baby food up 19%, and the things that we cannot avoid, and the must haves are getting costlier, and the packaging is getting smaller, and people have to pay more. the good news is that we have had wage inflation, too, and the wages are up 4.1%, and slightly outpacing inflation, and good if you are making money, but not if you are on the low income side.
12:10 pm
>> and now, for a while, there was thinking that the year, 2024 something would change and they would take the rates down, and is that making it all but impossible? >> it is not off of the table, and the fed wants to see the inflation cooling. and the last-minute conversations, they are not on the way to thinking that the inflation is cooling, and they have said nit last meeting and the last couple of weeks, and they are meeting again in may, and they won't lower the rates then or june or july, so maybe into the fall. but when you can't see the future, it is like cryptonite for investors and we don't know where the interest rates are going to be in six month, that is why the stock market is off. >> okay. thank you, caleb silver. time for the cnbc money minute. this is what looks like nutrition labels for internet

most controversial story to me, because mattel is releasing a new version of scrabble with a double-sided board. it is the classic board and scrabble together to make scrabble accessible for those who find word games intimidating, and for now, the version is only available in europe, and the first major change to scrabble board in over 75 years. as someone whose husband and friend says that they will never play scrabble with me again, i don't get it. >> and all of the winners don't like the change, and i will leave it at that. >> right. like maybe with the 5 or the 6-year-old, i can see that. but by the time they are 10 to have a vocabulary, forget it. >> get that dictionary out. >> come on. >> bertha coombs, thank you. the happiest place on earth the happiest place on earth is not happy with the (psst! psst!)
