one right now the end of an era, the winningest basketball coach in ncaa history is retiring. tara vanderveer making the announcement late tonight after 38 seasons leading the stanford women. amazing what she has done on the farm and for women's sports. not just basketball. >> the seven-year-old vanderveer says it is time and what a time she has had, leading stanford to three national championships and 14 final four. jocelyn moran is at stanford. jocelyn, what do you know? >> roche and jessica guay know this announcement came as a shock to many. she broke records this season, many call her a legend and she

also to prove it, what people are pointing out is the kind of leader she has been as a coach. >> and it is in the record books. 1203 wins. >> the legend of the game in college basketball's all-time winningest leader is retiring from stanford women's team. she earned that title this season when she got her 1203rd win, because my college basketball the winningest coach of all time. clique tara vanderveer is a peak of history in women's basketball game. this woman has been coaching for 45 years, she was coaching before there was a 3.1 in women's college basketball. >> even though it was shocking, nbc sports bay area says it also makes sense, given the success she has had in stanford leading the pac-12. this could prove changes for next year. >> i am sure that this will change their rosters probably a lot of the reason that these players came to play for stanford was to play for coach dara. we vanderveer spent 45 seasons

with idaho, ohio state and stanford. in a statement tonight vanderveer said in part, quote, it has been an unforgettable ride. the door for me was the journey of each season, young women work hard for each other and form an unbreakable bond. and what makes her especially is the kind of leader she is a coach. >> she was never someone that thought she was the end-all be- all, she was incredibly collaborative, incredibly flexible. she was always willing to hear someone out and think what do you see that i am not seeing. she added everyone into her vision. >> reporter: and with nbc sports bay area also points out that coach dara is set to remain as an adviser with the program. now kate pay, who played under coach dara and has been a part of her staff for quite some time is in negotiations with

the school to be her successor. again, this has been a very big shock for many people, especially when it comes to stanford's community. klay jocelyn, thank you. i've covered coach vanderveer since 1998, she does not seek the spotlight. she is tough and she is active. she is also earned the respect from coaches around the country. various sports and various leagues. >> i love tara , she is amazing and we have connected quite a bit in the bay. she has come to our practices. i have seen her down on their campus. i have so much respect and admiration for her and my initial reaction is, i am thrilled for her. she can go water skiing and she loves to waterski, i know. so congrats to her on an amazing career. >> this coach kerr about 45 minutes ago. former stanford football coach david shaw also sending his admiration on twitter. there is an avalanche of social media post right now from coaches, players, and

are going to november. >> the race for the 16th congressional districts he could have a different look in a matter of weeks after two separate requests have been filed for recount. currently, three candidates are vying for the congressional seat to replace retiring congresswoman, anna eshoo, that is because a place results ended in a tie between joe samiti and and evan low, both candidates receiving 30,249 votes this means they are joining first place, sure, sam liccardo on the november ballot this is the campaign that just keeps getting more and more interesting by the day. >> reporter: melinda jackson is a political science professor at san jose state university who says if a recount does take place, the clear winner would be the former san jose mayor. >> the person who actually has the most to gain from a recount is sam liccardo because right now he is looking at a three person race, he would probably do better, have a better chance in a two person race. >> reporter: all three

campaigns, sam liccardo's campaign responded saying that more than 100 ballots were not included in the final tally due to issues like unverified signatures and they understand why there would be an effort to make sure the boats are fully considered. evan low's campaign is accusing liccardo of dirty tricks, saying sam liccardo, who does not live in the district, did not follow recount himself. instead he had his former staff do it for him. let's. joe samiti and says in a statement, eventually this process will work it out. my job is to stay focused on how i can best represent folks in my district and that is what i am doing. the length of the recount will depend on whether it is done manually or by machine. costs can be as high as $100,000 depending on how it is done. registrar's office could begin the recount on monday. pete suratos, nbc bay area news. another headlight tonight, a lot of focus off of our coast, a 30 foot long gray whale entangled in a massive gill net, time is running out

to save its life. ocean rescue operation teams are hoping the public will get involved. nbc's terry mcsweeney has more on the headlights. >> reporter: this gray whale is an life-threatening trouble. off the san mateo county coast today you can see the orange buoys it is dragging. what is less obvious is a massive element connected, that is also wrapped around the whale. coordinating the rescue effort with the marine mammal center in sausalito. here's a california marine mammals trading response coordinator for the national oceanic and atmospheric and administration fisheries. >> related difficult to remove because the whale doesn't want to stop and doesn't want to let us do what we need to do and that does require a lot of guts. >> reporter: the entangled whale was first spotted march 22nd off of laguna beach and tagged with a tracking device which soon separated from the whale. today the big mammal spotted for the first time since, off thornton state beach in daly

city, heading north on his migration. the process of removing that killnet, some as large as several football fields, is right out of a frightening movie. >> we get in tow behind the whale so we will let the whale pull us and that we can pull ourselves right up behind the whale and then we can reach over the front of the boat, with a 10 or 15 foot pole, 25th, 25 feet depending on how reactive the whale is and we can try to reach up there to make the cut. >> noah has never lost a rescue team member but several teams across australia and canada have, it is that dangerous. at rodeo beach this evening, we came across several people who are generally concerned about the health of that will and of our oceans. >> it just shows that pollution and mismanagement of ocean and river channels is a huge issue and it is terrible that a large, beautiful animal has to suffer because of it. sad. >> reporter: i like fishing, i

am fourth, but you've got to do the right way. you know, if whales are getting caught in nets, that is not right. do a better job. >> reporter: noah is asking the public to get involved in this project. if you are along the coast or out in the water tomorrow, maybe from sonoma county on north and you spot the well, they want to call 1877 sos whale . that will give them a location where this whale is, maybe, maybe they can save its life. terry mcsweeney, nbc bay area news. >> let's hope so, thank you, terry . librarians in san francisco are sounding the alarm over safety. they say city libraries are a magnet for crime and just unruly behavior. a large group of libraries have at city hall, they want the city to put security guards in all 27 branches in the library system. one librarian told she recently had to do with a deranged man with a weapon. another described tried to calm a man after he just started screaming at other people in the library. >> we were just hoping he would

leave peacefully before anything happens and he did end up leaving. he kicked a window. >> libraries had guards already posted to 12 branches and they have a mobile patrol they can respond to as needed. the spokesperson went on to say that seven of the libraries without permanent guards had not reported any incidents last year. tonight, we learned the name of a nine-year-old girl, killed in a crash in concord on sunday. contra costa county coroner's office says her name is donna hernandez tapia and she's from oregon. she was in an suv that veered off of 680 at the 242 split sunday morning. it rolled multiple times before landing upside down in the dirt median. hernandez tapia was ejected from the car, chp tells us she was not wearing a seatbelt. four of her family members have major injuries police are now looking for the driver who took off on foot at this ., we don't know what the relationship is between the driver and the victims in that car. san jose is one step closer

to creating a 150 foot buffer between schools and homeless encampments. the ordinance would ban rvs, tents, and others from 150 feet of preschool, k-12 schools, and day care centers. this comes after months of complaints by students and families. they say they are being harassed by the unhoused as they walked to school the city plans to test this program near three schools in east san jose. it works the council could expand it citywide. >> yeah, there's a lot of families that actually live within the community that could walk to school but choose not to walk to school and they drive their children to school because of the situation that exists. >> reporter: the city says the new rules are not meant to treat the homeless as criminals but homeless advocates disagree. they say that is exactly what the ordinance will do. city leaders are expected to approve it after a final vote x month.

the a's say they are done with oakland but we know their future in las vegas is far from a done deal. today, a group in nevada intensified its efforts to stop the proposed las vegas ballpark. a political group called schools over stadiums is backed by the nevada teachers union. that group wants the nevada voters to decide if public money should be given to john fisher, the a's on her. last year nevada lawmakers set aside 380 million bucks in public funding for the a's. the legislation is known as sb one, the plan is to use that money to help fund a 1 1/2 dollar ballpark for the a's on the strip weekly today, lawyers for schools over stadiums made of their case in front of the nevada supreme court. >> a majority of las vegas voters oppose public money going toward a baseball stadium for the athletics. and that is where in the supreme court today to determine taxpayer should have the opportunity to vote on whether their public money goes. >> lobbyists for the a's also

dropping coverage, state farm insurance is planning on canceling thousands of california policies this year and tonight we know where. state farm announced weeks ago it would not be renewing 30,000 home insurance policies and 40,000 commercial real estate policies in california. the issue, they say, is fire and flood risk, say it is too expensive, too risky for them so here is the update, this map shows you where the drop policies will come from. state farm released the numbers by z.i.p. code and the biggest impact zone is the bay area or in dell, which is this yellow part right here. they're going to be dropping 1700 policies there. in santa rosa, 1400 policies will be dropped other hotspots

include lafayette, santa clara, and santa cruz for now we should note they are not dropping all policies in the city. state farm says they're going to notify customer sometime between july 3rd and august 20th so many of the people who live in these areas are on edge, including the mayor of marinda. >> were not being a good neighbor, they have certainly not being a good neighbor to anyone. >> this i worry about in the middle of the night. and when i wake up i still worry about it. >> reporter: the mayor has sent a letter to the governor, the insurance commissioner and state lawmakers demanding that they do something. calling the situation a crisis. a group of women in the east bay are trying to open the door for other women to enter and succeed in a male-dominated field. we are talking about construction. so what is there action plan gia vang reports from emeryville. >> reporter: in this emeryville lot on san pablo avenue, are 20 or so soon-to-be construction

workers, all of whom are women. and under one of the respirator masks is 23-year-old becky rodriguez. >> born and raised in the east bay, how? >> yes, you already know. >> she is an artist and former security guard. we for security, it was just fast money. this is something that i need right now, just to get the bills paid. but i didn't see myself growing from that. you know. >> you want to stay here in the bay area? >> of course. >> at a time when bay area home prices continue to soar, rent isn't that much better and inflation continues to hinge up, something needed to change. >> i was on a bus and i saw a flyer and i was like women building the bay, i want to be that. >> reporter: that landed her in one of rising sun groups for pre-apprentice construction and hands-on training >> we help them get into the construction trade, help them find a job where they can't

live in the bay area we work with the justice center or the abused women who work with the homeless shelters we work with high school students. we work wherever we can to convince females that they can really do this job. >> reporter: according to the u.s. bureau of labor statistics, women make up under 11% of the construction workforce and even less when you're talking about hands-on work. >> today it is still 2.5% that is in the field. >> reporter: the work is there, according to ej sire, with sheet metal workers local 104 in projects like housing and what is called life sciences offices that require design specifications for high-tech spaces. >> i think in this area itself, though, especially in the bay area and is starting to pick up and there's really a big turnaround where we are starting to see that growth. >> reporter: growth there hoping developers hire locally for. >> we have 1286 applicants right now, 1286 local residents and constituents that are living in the bay area, they're looking for that pathway in the middle class.

>> reporter: it is a class of the different sorts right now for becky, sparked by the idea of a carpentry or welding career after her may graduation. >> hopefully it grow so i can create my own family here i want a lot of kids. no, but definitely just being able to stay here in the bay area, that is just my main goal. >> reporter: in emeryville, gia vang, nbc bay area news. rising sun is hosting an outreach for tomorrow, 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at their oakland location. they are expecting 60 vendors, including tree union representatives and contractors. moving day on the water for a two-story home on the san francisco bay. the floating home and being towed from redwood city to sausalito and it drew quite the crowd. the move actually started yesterday morning at the redwood city marina the trip took a little bit longer than expected due to some unexpected complications. the home, which has a white picket fence around it docked in sausalito around 2:30 this afternoon and the people

because i want to show you a comparison of some of the highs that we saw today compared to the average temperatures around this time of year. we were defecting to see any record highs. we did not see record highs but if you look at today in santa rosa, 75 degrees typically the advertise, about 68. notice in concord, a high of 77 typically we see an average of 70 even in san francisco, 67, 63 is an average, san jose, 70 degrees, but a 10 degrees difference. and that number is going to rise as we head into tomorrow. satellite radar right now, notice the state of california, we got high pressure that will sit over mostly all of the next 24 hour span but also into thursday before developing now to the pacific right here, our next system begins to form, lineup and set up heading into the weekend. i will give you a closer look in a second. for early morning commute,

so many negative headlines but you got to hand it to the players, they are doing all right. and make in texas, shayla layers hit three home runs. the defending world series champions, the a's have now one three of their last four games.
