finally tonight, a surprising popular internet search tonight, my eyes hurt. on google following today's solar eclipse. experts have been telling people not to look at the sun without the protective equipment of the glasses, that it can hurt your eyes. a lot of people apparently learned the hard way, they learned anyways. long-term damage after eclipses

[ laughter ] i'd like to be the 10 millionth person to ask you, did you see it? [ laughter ] [ cheers and applause ] did you see it? ♪ after friday's earthquake, everyone asked, "did you feel it?" [ laughter ] after today's eclipse, everyone asked, "did you see it?" which is better than the usual question in new york city, "did i sit in that?" [ laughter ] and you go, "i didn't sit in that. did i? did i? i didn't. okay. good. i didn't, i didn't." yeah, this month has been full of mind-blowing events. last week, earthquake, this week, eclipse, next week, taylor swift's new album. [ cheers and applause ] i mean, boom boom boom. it just happened. and if you missed the eclipse, don't worry. there are currently 2 billion videos of it on instagram, so. [ laughter ] yeah, all the news stations had non-stop coverage, but i think cnn messed up by not having andy cohen and anderson cooper countdown to the blackout while getting blacked out. i mean, come on. that would have been great. [ applause ]

that's right. the eclipse was weeks and weeks of buildup and then it was over in a few minutes. or as i call that, prom. [ laughter ] that's right. this is the day you don't look directly at the sun, or as one guy put it, "it's very easy to do." [ laughter ] [ rim shot ] "that's him, that's him." i saw that delta airlines was offering two special solar eclipse viewing flights. and one side of the plane had a a great time. [ laughter ] "can you lower the window shade just a little bit? i'm watching -- i'm watching a a movie about the eclipse." [ light laughter ] guys, listen to this. the nypd has a new way to make people pay their parking tickets. they're called barnacle windshield boots. did you hear about this? look at this. this is real. >> steve: oh. a blizzard, a mother hears a a noise. but this sound is disturbingly familiar. it's the sound of footsteps coming up the stairs. she catches a glimpse of him and at once knows her situation is even more dire than she feared, because she knows exactly who he is and what he wants. [ audience oohs ] all right, that's going up against "how to solve your own murder." okay. this is also a debut. it's a mystery. a teenage girl -- ♪ [ laughter ] i didn't say anything yet. just saying, "a teenage girl --" there's more to the plot. [ laughter ] >> steve: that's the plot. >> jimmy: a teenage girl. that's it. ♪ >> steve: teenager. >> jimmy: a teenage girl named frances visits a fortune teller, who makes a bone chilling prediction. one day, she will be murdered. ♪ frances spends a lifetime trying to solve a crime that hasn't happened yet.

[ cheers and applause ] thank you. it was very -- it was very sweet. i won't spoil anything -- >> jimmy: was it emotional? >> um, yeah, it was a little bit. it was more -- it was more emotional than i thought it would be. part of it was 'cause, you know, "big bang" was always done in front of a live studio audience, not unlike this, and the energy is very different 'cause they're a single cam. so it's more intimate, and it's just -- it's just different.

and so i went there -- mayim is also in it with me, and -- >> jimmy: oh wow. >> it was really sweet. >> jimmy: yeah, we love mayim bialik. [ cheers and applause ] >> it was really sweet to get to revisit those characters in a situation that was sort of similar but very different. and the only thing that was weird was the first time she and i got on set, we did our first rehearsal. and it was like, "huh." and we were walking back to the dressing room, and she goes, "i really thought i'd feel more confident." [ laughter ] that nails it. i don't know what it is -- >> jimmy: that's really funny. >> -- but it wasn't like riding a bike. it was like, "oh. oh, god." >> jimmy: you're like, "can i do this character? am i a little rusty?" >> yeah. no, it felt weird. but then you get into it, and it was real nice. it was sweet. >> jimmy: i cannot wait for that. and it's a great show. a lot of people online were seeing this picture of -- obviously of young iain. [ audience aws ] there was a photo going around of young michael keaton -- >> yes. >> jimmy: -- that people said he looked like young sheldon. [ laughter ] >> i mean -- >> jimmy: that's -- that's pretty interesting. >> it is interesting. there's definitely a a resemblance.

the one thing i will say is, michael keaton's -- that really looks like michael keaton still, doesn't it? [ laughter ] >> jimmy: he looks exactly the same. >> i mean, yeah. >> jimmy: yeah, but now people online want you to do an -- an older sheldon with the actual michael keaton playing sheldon. >> let me tell you this, i doubt that's going to happen, but -- [ light laughter ] i would be so excited to have michael keaton added to the lineage of sheldon portrayers. [ light laughter ] that would be amazing. >> jimmy: wouldn't that be fun? >> oh, i've admired that man my entire life, starting with "mr. mom." i mean, what a great guy. >> jimmy: ah, he's the best. >> he's a wonderful actor. >> jimmy: have you ever met him? >> i have met him, but just like, in passing. >> jimmy: ah, he's so cool. >> some stupid industry event. >> jimmy: yeah! a play in five evictions." how do we set up what the show is about? >> oh, god, the swift sell, if you will, is that there's a a mother, jessica lange, and two children -- [ cheers and applause ] me and celia keenan-bolger -- >> jimmy: oh, she's fantastic. >> you saw her in "mockingbird," right? >> jimmy: i saw her in "to kill -- >> she won the tony for that. >> jimmy: she was unbelievable in that. >> she's amazing, an amazing actor. and both of them are amazing actors and amazing people. it has been such an experience. >> jimmy: jessica lange, jim parsons -- >> so she's sort of a single mother, and we're her children, and we go through many, many -- like, a span of 40, 50 years or whatever. and -- >> jimmy: and what's it like when you play a 14-year-old? i mean, how do you get into that character? >> well, i didn't give it a lot of thought. i kind of just started doing it. i mean, i feel like you would understand this. like, i just was like, "what do they do?" and i found myself like, on furniture, and like -- i don't know if i was this floppy when i was a teenager, but this is what i'm going with. >> jimmy: yeah, kind of flop around. >> the only thing is, you know, i'm 51. and so, when i --

[ laughter ] that's gonna ruin the illusion. >> jimmy: you have to stretch yeah. >> yes, i have to stretch. but it's -- it's really joyful, because, like, it frees you to do like things like -- i'll find myself kind of doing kind of a skip-hop every once in a while. i'm like, "what's happening?" but it's so fun. >> jimmy: yeah. and there's a scene you were telling me about backstage that -- >> oh, with jessica alone on stage. oh. >> jimmy: yeah. [ light laughter ] >> so, i won't spoil anything. i won't tell you exactly what happens. bottom line is for an extended period of time, jessica lange is alone on stage, going about her business. i don't -- there's not really a a single word spoken. and the first time they staged this scene in rehearsal, we got -- me and celia got called in later 'cause they were working on it. so by the time we got to rehearsal, they were ready to run it. and i sat there watching this -- just jessica, in silence, moving. and as soon as it was over, i was, like, "that is already the best thing i've seen on broadway this year." this is -- it's incredible.

[ light laughter ] and so, what they thought was going to be, like, this lovely, fun weekend exploring new orleans, my mom played kristen wiig's part, and we spent hours self-taping. and i made my dad leave and go on a very long walk alone. [ laughter ] >> jimmy: you're like, "dad, i got work to do, man." >> it's like, "we're working." and my mom did kristen's part wonderfully. and so, it's very full circle that she's here with me tonight celebrating. >> jimmy: yeah, it clearly worked, yeah. she's good luck.
