shut down eastbound lanes. six months of work in the bay area pauses to mark half a year of fighting between israel and hamas. people using this milestone to call for action. the news at 5:00 start right now. thanks for joining us, i am terry mcsweeney. >> img having. we start with one of the most destructive and deadly conflict of the 21st century. six months since the israel- hamas war began with the invasion of israel on october 7 hamas militants executed a surprise attack on israel, killing 1200 people and capturing 200 hostages, many of them women and children. it is not clear how many remain alive in captivity. israel swiftie responded with large areas, still popular with civilians in their effort to destroy hamas and its vast network of tunnels. it is estimated more than 31,000 palestinians have been killed since the war began.

the majority of people living in gaza have been forced to flee to the southernmost city of rafah where food and water are scarce. israel's military announced that it is drawing down troops in the southern gaza strip. this is after an intense month- long operation. the u.s. and other western nations have been urging israel not to invade rafah unless there are safeguards in place protecting civilians, among other demands. israel says the pullout troops will recuperate and prepare for operations. it is unsure of those future operations include the invasion of rafah or if this is the start of a smaller more calculated strategy. a cease-fire deal does not appear likely anytime soon. >> activist on both sides are marking six months of conflict with protest and vigils. lafayette, numbers of the local jewish community and allies held a vigil for the 134 hostages, some of them americans, is still believed to be held by hamas.

on the overpass, calling for an immediate release of all hostages and bodies of israelis. >> are elderly, i am holding a picture of two of them here tonight. have chronic health conditions, that are older, and we are really concerned for their health. we want to all them released and brought home. they did nothing wrong, on saturday morning they were asleep in their beds when they were grabbed by young men with guns. >> the group says that they have been holding a daily vigil in lafayette since november. >> demonstrations were also held on overpasses across the peninsula. southbound 101, people on an overpass near embarcadero. mountain view and on the overpass just north of the highway 85 interchange. a busy night for police across the bay area. several departments broke up a

number of illegal sideshow. video hear from one in oakland near 47th and international. you can see the cars spinning, people lighting off fireworks. oakland police broke it up around 2:30 this morning. a half hour after that, and police broke up another sideshow. that crowd, after getting broken up, headed toward san francisco and ended up on the bay bridge. and that is where, as you can see, they stopped traffic for about 20 minutes. no word on any aircraft or citations. officers also broke up pleasures near stanford and in mountain view. the searches on further driver who ran away from the deadly crash. this happened just after 5:00 this morning on interstate 680 and concord. chp says the driver of a mazda with six people inside lost control and hit the median. the car rolled several times, several people inside were not wearing seat belt. they were ejected from the car, the driver ran away before police crews to get there. a nine-year-old girl died. to the hospital, no word on how they're doing right now. a nightmare after another freeway shooting happened friday night on the on ramp from ashby avenue to i-80 in

berkeley. a man who was driving was shot then crashed his car, police are still looking for that gun man. a vallejo man who saw and heard what happened spoke exclusively with us last night. he was in that red car that you see in this caltrans camera video. he said he was waiting for the metering light when he heard a pop. >> to me i thought maybe it was just a car backfiring i didn't think much of it and also i heard a loud scream, a woman scream. there is a vehicle that was flying down the side of the road and the passenger is trying to get the wheel and she is screaming and i quickly see that and i quickly turned away and i just see him go. >> he says he saw a man in the driver seat bleeding. no word on how that victim is doing. investigators have yet to release any kind of suspect description. with freeway shootings on the rise, roll out hundreds of cameras on east bay freeways.

expect to be working later this month a few young boys reported missing in the south they are home and safe. chp issued a missing and endangered adviser for the boys on monday. see you around 1:30 yesterday morning in mountain view. this afternoon chp canceled the alert, saying the boys were found, though it is not yet clear where. the anticipation is building tomorrow morning, millions of americans will be looking up at the sky to catch a glimpse of the moon covering up the sun. here at the bay area, we're not going to have a total solar eclipse, we will be about 30%. but still, people are excited. nbc bay area is christie smith stopped by the exploratory him in the san francisco, were astronomers and visitors are getting ready. >> people in the bay area are certainly interested in this, they are making plans for tomorrow morning. and there are a number of events planned to experience it. san francisco is known for its spectacular views, but it is an upcoming natural event on monday that has people buzzing.

>> it is a rare event, right? why not take a chance to see something we may never see again. >> at the exploratory him they are gearing up for the phenomenon of people around the country are talking about. >> we are going to get a total solar eclipse happening in the united states. that means that the moon is going to be in alignment, and will actually cover up the sun. the great alignment between the sun and moon and the earth. >> rob semper is chief learning officer at the exploratory him. he described what will be happening here in the bay area. >> it will cause, in the bay area, partial solar eclipse, meaning the sun will look like a bite was taken out of it by the moon, obstructing the sun. and in some places in the united states, it will be a total solar eclipse running across the country from texas on out through maine. >> are viewing party is from 10:00 to 12:30 and visitors of the museum will have the opportunity to get slides coverage from texas and mexico

got to be tested. >> dr. rick feinberg is on the societies solar eclipse task force. he says you can run a basic test on your eclipse glasses at home. step one, start inside and put the glasses on. if they block out everything, you should be okay. now on to step two, step outside. >> take them out and take a brief glimpse at the sun through them on a sunny day. the sun is comfortably bright you are almost certainly fine. >> but what if you go outside for a test run and your eclipse glasses block the sun? if you can't see the sun through you know you have gotten defective glasses. if there is time, we are getting so close to the eclipse , kind of running out of time. >> if you can't find a new pair, borrow someone else's. doctors say do not try everyday sunglasses, they are just not strong enough to safely watch and a clips. >> good advice, thank you. what should you do if your glasses after the eclipse? setting up recycling bins at libraries. here in california you can drop off your eclipse glasses at war

>> wow. rob, we talked about all the hotels along the path of totality. booked up, as terry said, total paycheck. can they see it? >> issue here, a lot of folks, april is usually a month of severe weather. depending on where you are right now, locations have been watching the chatter online. folks are heading to arkansas and missouri. you're about to see why, the cloud cover right now, as we should overlay in cloud cover on the path of totality. look at the clouds and showers over south-central texas, better viewing right now, this whole part will be in the northern half of the state of arkansas and missouri, southern illinois and indiana right now. closer to home, though, we're going to have some pretty good looks, triple cloud cover, few of those isolated showers weakening as we passed sunset, hi clouds overhead tonight. good news as we go from 10:00

tuesday. by wednesday, 80s. these temperatures for the weekend, just can't show up on the weekend but they are right there, wednesday and thursday. right now, on those days of the week. 80s possible, south san jose, even 70s around there. san francisco and oakland, we do have some changes toward the end of the week. friday we are watching this colder weather system dropping down. will get a chance for some showers right now it looks like friday night, early saturday, released the second half of next weekend is trending warmer and drier. so tomorrow should be good for viewing around the bay area as we enjoy summerlike temperatures for a couple of days. 80s there for inland areas, wednesday and thursday but yes >> [ laughter ] >> another weekend without showers. >> to start, think the window to that will be late friday and saturday with the weekend warming up on sunday. >> nobody likes the weekends

the most colorful celebration of the season continues, we will look at holy festival. the celebration marks the beginning of spring, today returned to bishop ranch and all of its rainbow glory there, the traditional celebration has deep meaning for many hindus, everyone is invited to part in the fun. the festival included live music, dance performances, and henna tattoos. today marks the return of san francisco's largest record fair. clearly it is called rock and swap. the university of san francisco hosted it on its campus. guests paid a small entrance fee, for the young people out there that don't know what those ours, you put them in your car. that's vinyl records. >> used with them in the car in the older models. >> more than 100 vendors showed up to sell their vinyl records
