6:01 pm
five seconds. this is several hours after a small quake rattled the east bay. i felt this one. it was along the berkeley/oakland border. the usgs said it was a 3.2. no reports of injuries or damage. and while the shaking was mostly concentrated in the east bay, people in san francisco and san jose reported feeling it, too. the owner of bill's trading post in berkeley tells us she felt the shaking, but didn't cause anything to fall off her shelves. she says even though the quake was small, it left her feeling uneasy. >> we were helping a customer and he was talking to us right under that arch, and he moved, as he moved, we felt the whole building shake. my coworker looked outside and saw basic bird window sort of shaking. >> yeah, i was on my bed and felt that shaking, too, for just a couple seconds.
6:02 pm
the ring of fire has been active. a 4.4 shook pa chico on thursday. and these, of course, follow that deadly 7.4 quake which hit taiwan on tuesday. today, a 5.2 aftershock rocked that region. the death toll has risen to 13. hundreds remain stranded in areas that were cut off by damage, but aftershocks are hampering rescue efforts. we're looking out at oakland right now. hazy out there. not all that warm, but warmer than it's been. still some snow up there on mount hamilton. this is the camera from the observe tear. some of the staff traveling out of state to go see the eclipse on monday. you can see the eclipse out of town. you can see snow here. this is an unusual part of the year, rob. >> yeah, it's cold outside, feels a bit like winter and you mentioned the earthquakes around the bay area. we have many fault systems around the bay area that are
6:03 pm
near that gilroy quake, again, san andreas fault. this one kind of occurring between the two. the 2.5 not long ago. 2.1, pretty close to the fault there off to the west. and along the hayward fault, that was that 3.2 earthquake that a lot of people felt around 11:12 this morning. this many fault systems in the bay area, not a surprise to feel them. anything but 2.5 to 3.2, that's going to get your attention. another thing that get your attention, the cold temperatures, we're only 59 degrees in san jose. we take you on a tour of the bay area, 57 in walnut creek, and in san francisco, it's breezy out there. west wind at 15 miles per hour. 56 degrees. highs right now and to start the weekend, about ten degrees below average. a few spor spots in the interiot valleys. tomorrow, a chance you might

6:06 pm
demonstrated the ability to bring people together, achieve consensus on the toughest issues and move this city forward. >> nearby, there was some vocal opposition. >> moderates are working together to make sure he doesn't become mayor. >> among those at the counterrally, mark ferrell's campaign manager. his campaign said, he does not respect the change in leadership san franciscans are looking for. peskin joins the race running against london breed. her campaign said aaron peskin is synonymous with intimidation, obstruction, and dits function. literally the tripping crown of moving san francisco backwards. and other candidates also weighing in. daniel lurie's campaign said in a statement, in part, lurie's campaign of accountable leadership and new ideas stands
6:07 pm
in stark contrast to the gang of city hall insiders who have failed to get the job done. and peskin's fellow board member safai said he's running for real change in city hall. in november, it will be up to voters to decide. >> i think it's important that they're not part of the current administration, you know, that they're coming from a fresh perspective. >> i love this city, and i love living here, and, you know, i just hope we get somebody that's actually for the people. >> reporter: kristy smith, nbc bay area news. over the past few months, we've been speaking with the candidates in this race. just search our page for their interviews. we have a followup to a deadly shooting in san francisco. police say they've made an

arrest. the shooting happened in the mission district. officers found a man who had been shot on mission near 19th. he died at the scene. investigators arrested a 35-year-old richmond man last night. an electric vehicle crash leads to a hazmat cleanup in the north bay. a crazy kind of story. chp says it started today when an officer tried to pull over the driver on highway 101. the driver didn't stop, sped up, leading the officer on a chase that at times reached 110 miles an hour. the driver lost control of the car, crashed at an exit. >> due to the impact at that high rate of speed, a lot of the batteries were ejected from the vehicle. they were on fire when we showed up, some of them exploded. >> car ended up submerged, just like that, on the side of the road. it was kind of a perfect ending for the flaming batteries. the driver, well, is going to be facing charges, those charges are pending, but is only
6:09 pm
slightly injured. he was released at the scene, mid 20s, a guy from santa rosa. chp says they will keep it there overnight to make sure that fire is out, plan to remove it tomorrow. all right, less than 48 hours, all eyes are going to be on the sky, millions across the country getting ready to look up monday to the solar eclipse. check out this model on nasa's website shows how the moon's shadow going to spread across the planet, everyone in that direct path, the path of totality, is in for quite a show. we're not going to be in for quite a show, but we won't miss out completely. this picture shows what the partial eclipse will look like in the bay area. starts around 10:00 in the morning. peaks at 11:00, it's over by noon. you have a two-hour window. astronomers remind us, not safe to look directly at the sun. not during an eclipse, not during the time, but not on monday. you need to use special glasses to protect your vision, and also
6:10 pm
use items around your house to view a reflection of the eclipse. >> okay, so, where can you get those special glasses, terry? >> there you go. >> san jose public libraries are helping people get ready. each branch is handing out glasses this weekend. they are limited to one pair per person and are being handed out on a first come, first served basis. >> and then the day of the event, we're having a 10:30 viewing party out in front of our building. so, the library's open, but we're going to have a party in the front, and we're going to take a look at the eclipse, do some trivia and just hang out and have a good time. >> it's usually in the back -- >> parties in the front at the library, folks. >> the library has plans to educate people about the eclipse tomorrow, as well. if you have eclipse glasses, you can test them out before the big show in the sky. i'm consumer investigator chris kimora. an astro her will show us how,

6:13 pm
you're looking at it. crews pulled an elderly woman out of a canal after she crashed her car into it. first responders say the 70-year-old lost control while driving on highway 4 near bailey road. she crashed through a fence, slid 200 yards down an embankment, then crashed through another fence and went into the canal. her car was submerged in the frigid canal. fire fighters say a neighbor heard the crash, called 911, and they credit that neighbor with saving this woman's life. paramedics got there, took her to the hospital suffering from the effects of the cold. we are told she was okay otherwise. >> wow. let's get back to the eclipse. everybody's talking about it. less than 48 hours away from the moon covering up part of the sun. here in the bay area, we'll be able to see some of it. >> some of it, not the totality. but as we mentioned earlier, you'll need special glasses, but will your eclipse glasses work when you need them on monday? astronomers say you can check them right now.
6:14 pm
our investigative reporter shows us how. >> reporter: with reports of fake eclipse glasses out there, you might wonder about yours. are they legitimate? are they dark enough to protect your eyes? are they too dark that you won't see the eclipse? the american astronomical society compiled a list of eclipse glasses that passed lab tests and should work. snap this qr code to see if your glasses are on the list. also, look for this stamp. iso 12312-2. it's an international science standard for looking at the sun. but here's the thing. >> anybody can print on eclipse glasses that their product meets that standard. how do you know that it really does? the only way to know is if it's gotten tested. >> reporter: this doctor says you can run a basic test on your eclipse glasses at home. step one, start inside and put the glasses on. if they block out everything, you should be okay. now, onto step two.
6:15 pm
step outside. >> take them out and take a brief glance at the sun through them on the next sunny day. if the sun is comfortably bright, you are almost certainly fine. >> reporter: what if you go outside for a test run an your eclipse glasses block the sun? >> if you can't see the sun through it, you know you are defective glasses, you should try to get them replaced, but we're getting so close, we're kind of running out of time. >> reporter: if you can't find a new pair, borrow someone else's. eye doctors say, do not try everyday sunglasses, they're just not strong enough. to safely watch the eclipse. >> chris with the great advice. remember rob last year, you made these special boxes that you can do at home with your kids. >> you'd be amazed how the leaves from trees can cast that shadow, mirror ball, like a disco ball, will project the image, too. >> you got one of those at your house. >> we're going to have to head there. >> yeah. >> we had clouds, too but you can sometimes get a safe image,
6:16 pm
as chris mentioned there. let's rewind back to october, the last time we had a partial solar eclipse, and boy, the weather was cooperating. look at these shots. this was at 9:00 a.m., going back to october, so, you get some partial views between the clouds and, of course, this will be happening as kids are in school. nice way to do it is with the pick hole projector. you can project that image on the backside, and there's chris and johnny enjoying the viewing of the eclipse. that's what i'm talking about, with the tree leaves and sun slight passes through them, you get the mini-crescent suns across the ground. this time around, even better views is expected, coming up this monday. right now, chilly in san jose, 59 degrees. 57 in walnut creek. and more 50s, as we head over to oakland, 56 degrees. and chilly jacket weather conditions in san francisco, also at 56.
6:17 pm
now moving forward into tomorrow morning, shower chances returning in the north bay and the coast. chilly start, lows there in the 40s. highs tomorrow, about the same as we had today, upper 50s, low 60s. look at san jose, 62 degrees. upper 50s around san jose and oakland. try not to get districted by the seven-day forecast. we'll be warming up by midweek, but we have one chance of showers to deal with first, and it's coming down the coast tonight. by tomorrow morning in the north bay, the coast and some of the interior mountains, we'll see a chance of showers coming by from 4:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. the better opportunity with the heating of the day, pops up right after lunchtime, from about 2:00 in the afternoon to 4:00. watch how those showers drop south, and after sunset, what's left of the showers will start to move away. so, notice the rain totals here, the rain projection, about a tenth of an inch of rain, enough that you're going to want the umbrella at times. here are the key times for the eclipse now. jumping to monday morning. peak visibility, for the 35%
6:18 pm
partial eclipse, will be around 11:13 in the morning, and things wrap up around 12:15. let's look at the cloud future cast. patchy clouds, 7:00 a.m. this is good. this looks better than we saw around here last october. mostly clear skies, and a mostly warmer forecast, moving forward. 70s inland on tuesday. by wednesday, numbers really start to take off. 70s and low 80s in the forecast. high pressure builds in, shower chances after tomorrow move out, and they'll probably stay that way as we move through the better part of next week, as you watch the temperatures really start to climb. even a day of 70s possible, midweek. at this point, 70 feels warm. imagine if we hit 80 wednesday and thursday? things will be warming up heading towards midweek. >> that is going to be so nice. >> it will be. >> and a dry weekend coming up. >> that's the way things look right now. >> next week.
