chance to survey the damage of the francis scott key bridge. he will also meet with the families of the victims who died on the bridge. what has the federal response been to this emergency? >> reporter: frances, the white house was quick to respond to that tragedy in baltimore, approving $60 million in federal emergency relief funds to help with the initial costs. the coast guard has been helping to coordinate a complicated salvage operation to clear the channel. and president biden wants the federal government to cover the full cost of rebuilding the key bridge. congress will need to authorize that funding, and maryland lawmakers appear confident they can get this approved in congress. >> i mentioned to you a few days ago that i'd spoken directly with the speaker of the house of representatives. speaker johnson, who understood before i could even talk about the seriousness of this, the

impact that it was going to have on the area, but most of all on the country. we are ready to receive what have the president brings and sends to the congress. >> reporter: overnight, the army corps of engineers announced a time line for reopening the port of baltimore. they hope to open a 2800-foot-wide channel by the end of the month and reopen the port to normal capacity by the end of may. the mayor of baltimore responded to the plan, saying the timeline was ambitious and would kind on a lot of factors going right. reopening the port is critical for the national supply chain and, according to the baltimore sun, there are 11 ships trapped behind wreckage of the bridge right now, including four military ships that certainly could be needed at a moment's notice, frances? >> alice, thank you. breaking overnight, israel has promised to open more border crossings to get more aid into the gaza strip. the change comes after president

biden spoke with israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu on the phone, demanding, quote, immediate steps to address humanitarian suffering and the safety of aid workers, or else the u.s. could revise its israel-gaza policy. for the latest, let's go to claudio lavanga. will this increase in aid be enough, though? >> reporter: good morning, frances. an increase in aid is absolutely a lifesaver right now for most people in gaza. as secretary of state antony blinken said, 100% of people living there right now need humanitarian assistance. that's why president biden during that telephone call with benjamin netanyahu said that striking aid workers just as it happened when search workers that worked for world central kitchen were killed recently, is unacceptable. unacceptable. and he demanded israel to make more steps to take steps to protect innocent civilians as well as the safety of aid workers. to emphasize how serious

president biden was in those demands, blinken said that from now on, u.s. policy in regards to gaza will be determined by the assessment of how quickly it takes those steps. that may be why right after that telephone call israel did announce that it will reopen the port of ashdod and the crossings allowing aid to be delivered by land and sea and he will take steps to protect innocent civilians as well as aid workers. now president biden during that call also emphasized how important it is to reach an immediate cease-fire, also to further negotiations to make sure or ensure the release of the remaining hostages in gaza. back to you, frances. >> claudio, thank you. in taiwan, a desperate search for survivors continues after that 7.4 magnitude earthquake that struck on wednesday. currently, ten people are confirmed dead, but with 18

missing that toll is likely to rise. rescue t rescue crews are still working to reach people who were trapped by landslides. crews were raising the height of a crane in ft. lauderdale, florida, whenpart of the crane fell taking a worker with it. two cars were damaged. luckily both drivers will survive. osha will assist in the investigation. now to the serious dallas car crash involving rashee rice. for the first time we have confirmation that the kansas citywide receiver was driving one of the cars involved. here's priscilla thompson. >> reporter: an attorney for rashee rice confirming his client was behind the wheel in this dangerous crash caught on camera. >> mr. rice acknowledged that he was driving the lamborghini. >> reporter: police say that lamborghini and this corvette were speeding down the expressway in dallas when both

drivers lost control, hitting four other vehicles and sending two people to the hospital. it comes a day after rice confirmed in a statement that he spoke with dallas police about saturday's crash and apologized to the victims. >> he's going to do everything in his power to bring their life back to as normal as possible. in terms of injuries, in terms of property damages. he'll make certain that he is responsible for helping them. >> you guys all right? you guys just going to leave it? >> reporter: the occupants of the vehicles in question all left the scene, investigators say, without checking if anyone needed medical attention or exchanging information. >> here you have a young man, 23 years old, never been involved in anything like this. people were injured. his heart goes out to them. >> reporter: the nfl said we continue to monitor all developments in the matter. but, with rice's reputation and career all on the line, his attorney asking the public not

to judge him based on this incident alone. >> he's a young man that made a mistake. how many of you have made a mistake? >> reporter: rice's attorney says we could hear from the nfl star within the next week. meanwhile, no arrests have been made or charges filed. >> our thanks to priscilla for that report. the federal judge overseeing donald trump's classified documents case is rejecting his bid to dismiss the charges. trump's team argued the documents were considered pearl under the presidential records act. but judge aileen cannon ruled that particular law does not provide a basis to dismiss the case before trial. her ruling leaves open the possibility that trump's defense could be used later in the trial, which is set to start on may 20th. more turbulence for boeing, a 737 southwest airlines plane had to abort takeoff in texas after the engine caught on fire shortly after leaving the gate. all passengers were able to
