last season in the east bay. this morning the team announced plans to play the next few seasons in sacramento while they wait for the new stadium to be built in las vegas. thomas goethalsthom jensen is live for us where they laid out that deal, thom? >> reporter: yeah, actually we found out today that they have been in talks for several months about the move. when they finally proved to be unobtainable to get that agreement to continue to play at the coliseum in oakland. they did pend that agreement to move to west sacramento at least for the next three seasons, maybe longer. sutter health park has seen fewer than 11,000 fans. 14,000 if you count lawn seating. but it's about to host a big league team. starting next year it will

become the temporary home to the oakland athletics. >> we're looking forward to this being our home until we move on to the stadium in las vegas in 2028. >> reporter: a's owner josh fisher says he knows this is painful for bay area fans, but says a deal to stay in oakland seemed out of reach. now he says the a's are excited to give fans at this small west sacramento park a three-year home run show they won't forget. >> whether they will be athletics players, aaron judge, and others, launch home runs out of this very intimate, the most intimate ballpark in all of major league baseball for the next three years. >> reporter: the negotiations included vivek ranadive who also owns the minor league sacramento rivercats. he sees this as one step closer to his goal of bringing a full- time major league team to the state capital when the league expands. >> they will be getting a new team. they wanted to be on the west

coast. they would love for it to be in california. this is a great showcase for us. >> reporter: west sacramento's mayor says the park and the community will be an embracing environment for the team and help prove the city is up to the task of supporting a major league team. >> we are so excited for this historic day because it's been a dream to have a major league team here. >> reporter: the deal comes with one more trick. the a's will have an option for the 2028, since their ballpark isn't ready on time. thom jensen, nbc bay area news. >> it's a downer for sure. our coverage of the a's move to sacramento will continue at 6:00. as sacramento celebrates the team's arrival, a's fans in the bay area are just devastated. we will talk to fans about this

baseball breakup. okay, now as promised, more rain today along with those cold temperatures. that meant an unusual sight for us in april and parts of the mountains as well as mount hamilton getting a dusting today. in sacramento, there is small hail that fell on cars. you can see it there. chief meteorologist jeff ranieri joins me now as this means new meaning to april showers? >> it certainly does. man, it was hard to walk out of the door this morning. that cold air just really hits you and pretty hard here. we've gotten the storm system moving now over northern california. that's why we would have the thunderstorms, the small hail, the cold temperatures. and we are looking at things that are picking up again after some widespread morning rainfall. you'll be reintroduced here to more rainfall through petaluma. back to lakeville. and also fairville. and over towards novato. downhill for the south bay and also the bay, we are starting to see things pick up in san

francisco. that will continue over to contra costa, alameda counties. we are starting to see some of the rain move in from the santa cruz mountains, but really the zone here. that'll continue to pick up at 5:30 and east palo alto at 5:37. so we have the rain, but look at these numbers. coming in pretty good here with this rainfall this morning. san francisco at .38, and fremont, .28. and the temperatures right now, this is the current number, 48 in novato. 50 in santa rosa. low 50s in concord, livermore, san jose. we'll talk more about the cold temperatures and what's ahead for the weekend and how much more rain is on tap. i'll have that for you in ten minutes. >> we'll see you then. thank you. so what happens when it looks like winter during spring break in the bay area? well, you'll get a lot of people looking for snow, that's for sure. joining us from high atop mt.

hamilton. robert? >> reporter: we've gotten used to the storm lately, but i'm not sure if any of us will get used to seeing or dealing with snow. once it starts, there is no avoiding it. instead of april showers, we got april flurries. the storm that brought a lot of rain and wind recently turned cold today, bringing the snow to some of the higher elevations and the snow sneakers as well. this family brought a young boy to the santa cruz mountains. the 12-year-old had only seen snow in pictures. >> i think like it is a new experience for me because i rarely see snow. so yeah. it is basically exciting for me. >> reporter: what do you think now that you're looking at it? >> it is very cold. >> the know came harder and

harder where it was hard to see. but anywhere you look in the town areas, the scene sparkled. some people who came here to check on quick for their company brushed off the snow. while they seemed amused by the idea of the snowstorm, they admitted to being impressed. >> we are about half an hour from the canadian border, we're used to the snow. >> reporter: are you surprised to see how much? >> very surprised considering it's california. touch with all these storms we're having, we've got you covered. get your phone and scan the qr code on your screen. thwart, three candidates are moving on to the november election after the race for the number two spot ended in a tie. santa clara certified its election results today, cementing a tie for second between santa clara county supervisor joe simitian and state assembly member, evan low. this is the race for the district 16th. this is replacing anna eshoo in the house. now simitian and low both ended with $33,240 each. they will advance to take on front runner, sam liccardo. every vote really counts. i could not have made it this

far without every one of you. i hope to earn your support in november. and simitian says, "we have important work to do as a nation, and i'm ready to do that work. first, of course, that means winning in november, which that's the next challenge." all right, washington took a trip to the east bay today to our port of oakland's progress in building hydrogen energy. last october the state received more than a billion dollars from the feds to develop clean renewable hydrogen. the port of oakland is home to the state's hydrogen hub. also known as arches. soon all of this heavy equipment at the port will run on hydrogen, which will emit water vapor. the goal is to cut two million tons of carbon emissions each year. equivalent to 440,000 gas powered cars. today the senator and congresswoman barbara lee toured their progress. >> and it truly is leading the way for california.

it is some proof for at least a partial one for our climate in crisis. a new study out that appears to show the bay area's decision to embrace electric vehicles is having an impact. and over the last few years. >> we were looking for ways to manage the change in co2 as we would try to make those reductions. >> reporter: ronald cohen is a professor at uc berkeley.

here is what they found. it was making an environmental difference. >> we absorbed the total emission of co2 over a five- year period from 2018 to 2022 and it decreased less than 2%. it attributes that change to electric vehicles on the roads here in the bay area. >> reporter: a small, but steady decrease. an extensive monitoring network recorded the evidence. >> that'll allow us to map the air. we put measurements on the rooftops of 50 locations around the bay area. most of them middle schools or high school. >> reporter: while they believe the evs are the primary factor, they note that cars in general got more efficient and that's great news for a state with very green goals. >> the green goals in 2025. to get there we need annual

irreduction of 3.7% that continues until that time. it's about halfway there as we put this on a good start by we all knew we would need to ack set with it. >> we know that 37% of the new vehicle purchases in 2023 were electric vehicles. >> reporter: in san francisco, the city, a's >> with this is where the city has to be prepared to meet that demand. not only for some of the studies that we're working on with city partners, but our own road map where we are working, on pace to meet that demand. >> they are optimistic about the city's progress and response, making plans to make it easier to go electric. >> the department has a goal of 5,000 chargers by 2030.

drier weather. then next week, how about some 80s? >> let's go for that. we'll have a chance to thaw out. but right now, it's heavy, chilliest jacket on as speaking of the temperatures, i take a look at the temperature drop we've been experiencing this week. on monday, santa rosa, 77 degrees. full on sunshine today and the low snow and now down to 53 degrees. and they are seeing more than a 20% temperature drop here in concord. now we're seeing the changes, which will continue to move off towards the east tomorrow. it's still hanging out in our orbit sort to speak. even the possibility of some thunderstorms. and our doppler radar, we do have some widespread areas of

rain. we'll take you down to a few areas that will see it pick up. we've got this zone moving off towards the canyon. we also started seeing more peninsula rain, continuing in oakland, lafayette, back to danville, alamo as we head through the next 40 minutes. watch out for the slick roads. in the south bay, some spotty showers in san jose. look at the blues showing up over the santa cruz mountains. getting some snow about 2,000 to 3,000 feet and seeing that snow back up. you can see it spinning right there. it is just going to stay on top of us tonight, keeping those scattered rain chances into 10:00. you'll see the same picture here as you head through tomorrow morning's commute. a little bit of sun mixing in and scattered rain and

thunderstorms are a possibility into tomorrow afternoon. overall totals tomorrow, really look like they will range a quarter inch or less from most of us. although our eastern counties out towards contra costa and alameda county, couldn't get in back towards livermore. just the way the low pressure is kind of spinning out, moving towards the east. if you're getting up early tomorrow morning, it will be even colder. and man, bundle up. and we are also dipping it down. with the temperatures that you're mentioning, not one jacket, but i'll layer it up. good advice there. so get ready. it is staying with us tomorrow. all right, let's get a look at those temperatures as we head through tomorrow.
