today you have chosen to speak out for the first time. why have you decided to talk now? >> because there is no good time to talk about mr. epstein. >> welcome back. that was bbc broadcaster emily maitlis and her consequential 2019 interview with prince andrew. now the story of how that conversation came to be is
8:37 am
having told in "scoop" starring the award-winning gillian anderson. take a look. >> i can't tell you what the questions will be because i don't know myself yet.ow myself. but what i do know, i still won't tell you. but what i do know, i still won't tell you. but they will be fair. >> good morning to you. i remember watching this interview, hoda and i sat and watched it the morning after it aired. and my jaw was on the floor. do you remember watching it at the time? >> i think i put it off for a long time because i knew how cringe worthy it was and eventually really dug into it
8:38 am
when i started this project. and, yeah, it's jaw-dropping. >> when the role came along, this role of emily was not one you jumped at right away. in fact, i think you said no at first. >> i did, yeah. >> why? >> you may not know that emily that well over here, but she is -- you know, she's a household name in the uk and she has a podcast now. she used to work for bbc for a long time. she's an incredibly formidable journalist and woman who is in our midst all the time. and the idea of playing somebody that was so familiar and so alive felt incredibly daunting. >> you're pretty formidable yourself. you played margaret thatcher in "the crown." but is it because she was so familiar to everybody? that's what made it intimidating? >> and the fact that she's in my neighborhood. >> she didn't -- she was a part of this project per se. you didn't prep together or anything like that.
8:39 am
but i heard you did run into her at an event one night. >> i did. there was a charity event that i was invited to that she was going to be at. >> there you are. >> i know. and i literally come in from th prepare at all. didn't have makeup with me. and then showed up. and that is her. she is glam. leather miniskirt, tan, tan, blow dry. if anybody had asked in that moment, which one is the -- was the actress, it wouldn't have been me. >> did you country being in the mud with my been me. >> did you ask for my tips at that point? >> we were mid-shooting. so i went in incredibly familiar because i have been studying her. and i must have come across as a freak.
8:40 am
>> i doubt that very much. you know, she must be, i would think, quite honored that you are playing her. but the movie is more about -- it is about, of course, the interview. but it's told from the booker's perspective, the producer's perspective, how you landed that interview, how she was able to get the palace and prince andrew to do something the royals never do. >> yes. it's her book. and this is her take on what happened at the time, how she managed to land the interview and convince them that it would be a good idea to lay everything on the table and speak his truth. and there was definitely an opportunity for that to happen. and that's not quite how it went. >> as an interviewer, i get stressed just watching her conduct that interview. >> yeah. >> but it is a master work by her. >> it is. it is. >> okay. we have to ask you about "the x files" because there is talk that there may be a reboot. if there is, would you want to
8:41 am
be involved maybe? >> it's so funny because for most of my life, since i have -- since i finished "the x files," every interview i do people have asked. and the answer has always been, no, not going to happen. not going to happen. now, ryan kugler, who is the director of "black panther," approached cris carter to say he wants to do a take on it. i cannot think of a better way around for a reboot to happen. i think he's a bit of a genius. >> so you are saying there is a chance? >> whether i'm involved in it is a whole other thing. but i'm not saying no because i think he's really cool. if he did it, it would probably be done incredibly well. maybe i'll pop in for a little something something. >> that's exciting. we'll take that. we will take that right now. i was reading this morning. i know you talked about it before. you were 24 years old when you landed that part of a lifetime. you had a baby. 10 days after you gave birth by c-section, i might add, you were back at work. talk about jaw-dropping. that's amazing.
8:42 am
how do you reflect on that now. that was in the '90s. >> i think if i didn't feel so guilty that i got pregnant in the first season that i might have taken better care of myself and been more thoughtful about what i needed for my best interest at the time. but i think i was so wrapped up in i almost got fired. i'll do whatever they say, you know. so, yeah, 10 days after the c-section. but we're still talking about it, right, whatever it was 30 years ago. 30 years ago. >> yeah. it was quite extraordinary then and now. and also you have become such an advocate for women and self-acceptance. empowerment. i like what you say. you're saying women should be thinking about what they want. >> yeah. i mean, i've got a book of letters, and we put a call out international around the world
