right now at 5:00, searching for answers. the quest for clues after three people are shot in the parking lot of a north bay safeway. tragedy in gaza. overnight several members of the world central kitchen, including an american, are killed in an air strike while delivering aid there. a live report on the rising tensions and the actions now being taken by the nonprofit.
5:01 am
plus, loaded bases for lease extension talks. the key meeting happening in just a matter of hours to determine the future of the a's in oakland. this is "today in the bay." good morning to you on this tuesday. i'm marcus washington. >> and i'm kris sanchez. laura garcia is off. good morning to you, mike. good morning, kari. we want to talk about that forecast for today. >> yeah, it looks great today. in fact, the best day of the week. and it's not just because we made it past monday, but also because it's going to be warmer for later this afternoon. so we're starting out in the upper 40s for oakland, as well as walnut creek, it's 48 degrees. 51 in san jose and in san francisco. a look at our highs, we'll reach up to 77 today in san jose, los gatos and morgan hill, and for the north bay we're in the low 70s. much of the east bay in the mid-70s. temperatures start to drop off as early as tomorrow. look at the difference there.
5:02 am
we'll see a high of 66 in livermore and 60 in san francisco. we'll also be watching more clouds, and then eventually some rain, so i'll have a look at the timeline in a few minutes. mike, you were hearing about a fire in san jose. >> it sounded like a roadside fire. here is 101, not far from this camera is 680. the roadside fire is reported in the berryessa area, as i was looking for it and having the camera scan the area, the fire cleared from the chp report and so did the slowing. we'll track that in the newsroom. the rest of the bay shows a nice, easy drive. i'm hearing about a possible breakdown, a hazard on vasco road. right now it's just the altamont pass that shows traditional brake tapping and no problems approaching the bridge. a shooting outside a safeway in napa county is under investigation.
5:03 am
this happened yesterday around 4:30 in the afternoon in american canyon. investigators say someone opened fire in the parking lot of the safeway store there. police say three people were shot. >> when officers arrived on scene, they located three males that were suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. first aid was provided by the officers that responded on scene and then they were transported -- all three were transported to local hospitals. >> they were transported, but we don't yet know their conditions. police tell us no arrests have been made, but officers have detained two people for questioning. anyone who saw the shooting is asked to call the napa county sheriff's department. a landmark hotel in las vegas shutting down today, making way for a future baseball stadium for the a's. bob redell is joining us live from the east bay. >> bob, today the a's will try to extent the current lease at the oakland coliseum, too, right? >> reporter: you are correct.
5:04 am
good morning to you, kris and marcus. yes, later today the a's leadership will meet with the city of oakland to discuss a lease extension at the coliseum. now, that lease expires after this season, but they're not moving to las vegas until 2028, so they need a place to play in the meantime, so this is one of those options. you're looking at video of a recent game at the coliseum where you can see few fans are showing up, and this is in response to the team's imminent move out of oakland. the city has proposed a five-year $97 million lease extension. the team, the a's, would be able to opt out in 2028 after three years, but would still owe the city the full amount of the contract. but with little fan support so far this season, a former a's executive we spoke with believes the team should look elsewhere. >> if you're going to extend that lease for three years, four years, or five years in a ghost town, that is one of the worst marketing plans for major league baseball that you could ever
5:05 am
consider. >> reporter: the a's are also considering relocation spots such as salt lake city or sacramento. the city is also asking major league baseball to create a path for oakland to get an expansion team or help with the sale to local ownership. at 3:00 this morning, the tropicana hotel and casino shut down in las vegas. all resort guests must be checked out by noon today. eventually the tropicana site, which has been a landmark in the city, will be demolished to make way for the a's new $1.5 billion ballpark. reporting live, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thank you, bob, for that. it is 5:05 right now. turning to new developments of a deadly aid strike that killed seven workers distributing aid in gaza. in response, the nonprofit organization central kitchen is pausing operations in the
5:06 am
region. brie jackson is live from washington with more on that attack. there's also a new promise being made here, brie. >> reporter: that's right. good morning, marcus. the israeli military is promising a full probe into the air strike. as you mentioned, the seven workers were working for the nonprofit world central kitchen. the idf says it called the organization's founder, chef andres and offered condolences. seven aid workers were leaving the warehouse after unloading more than 100 tons of food. one was an american. the u.s.-based nonprofit says its team was traveling with two armored cars bearing its logo and had coordinated its movements with the israeli military. in a video statement this morning, the idf says, in part, quote, we will get to the bottom of this, and we will share our findings transparently. >> it's very interesting to hear
5:07 am
that, brie, because just 24 hours ago we were sitting here, we were talking about that virtual meeting taking place between israel and the white house. can you talk about what happened during that meeting? i understand there were some tense moments between the two. >> reporter: there were, marcus. in a joint statement, israel and the white house said they had a constructive engagement on a ground assault on rafah, gaza's southernmost city. both sides agreed they share the objective to see hamas defeated in the region. u.s. officials are trying to persuade israel not to launch a full-scale invasion of rafah, where over a 1 palestinians have fled looking for safety. the biden administration opposes a ground assault without a plan to move those individuals, while acknowledging hamas militants are holed up there. it comes after benjamin netanyahu canceled an in-person meeting last week after the u.s. declined to use its veto to stop a u.n. security council
5:08 am
resolution demanding an immediate cease-fire in gaza and it comes as israeli forces withdrew from the main hospital following a two-week raid that left devastation in its wake. despite ongoing protests calling for a cease-fire, the biden administration officials are defending sending more military equipment to israel. >> it's just sad to see the people there helping, trying to deliver aid, and still tragedy happen. brie jackson in washington this morning, thank you. it is 5:07 now. the judge presiding over former president donald trump's new york criminal trial is expanding a partial gas order because of the president's online attacks against the judge's daughter. this is the case related to the alleged hush money payment to adult film star stormy daniels. the trial is set to start in two weeks and it comes as the former president posted a $175 million bond in his new york civil fraud case. it means he will not have his

assets seized while the case is on appeal. this is related to the claims the trump company inflated the worth of trump's assets in order to get better loan rates. if trump does not win this appeal, he will have to pay more than $450 million. happening now, santa clara valley health care is dealing with a systemwide nurses strike. this is a live look at valley medical center where it's quiet right now, but this strike is expected to last three days. the picket lines will be at all three of the county's hospitals, o'connor hospital in san jose, st. louise regional in gilroy and valley medical center, which you just saw live. nurses are calling for increasing pay, staffing, benefits and security. santa clara valley health care says it has spent $20 million to cover the strike and is bringing in more than 1,000 contracted nurses. some patients' appointments have been rescheduled until after the
5:10 am
strike. santa clara valley health care says it has been generous with the terms of the new contract offered to those nurses. happening today, the state department of water resources will conduct another snow survey. this is the fourth of the year. it's happening at 10:00 in the morning and governor gavin newsom will be there. experts say the april survey is considered peak of the seasonal snowpack, the last time they did the survey they reported about 18 inches. recent storms could help today's survey. meteorologist, kari hall, you've been monitoring all of that. how should it look? >> it looks pretty good. as we take a look at some of our sierra snowpack that basically measures it automatically, we're right at where we should see those snowfall totals in the central sierra, at about 102% of the normal amount. the best is in the northern sierra and the southern sierra, still not too bad at 94% of its normal amount. we pay close attention because
5:11 am
once it melts, we are going to see that flow down into our reservoirs and that provides us with a third of our water supply here in the bay area. additional snow coming in for the next few days is anywhere from about 6 to 11 inches of snow, pretty decent, as the bay area gets rain. we are still enjoying the sunshine and dry conditions today. in san francisco we'll see temperatures in the low 50s to start and reaching into the mid-60s and mostly sunny with a light wind. tomorrow temperatures start to drop, so we'll talk about the changes and when we do get that rain coming back in a few minutes. mike has been working hard to find you lower gas prices. >> playing a part in some of that. first let's talk about alameda county. the best is livermore, $4.49 at valero on old first street. in marin county, the biggest number, larkspur's lowest, $4.75 at marin gas on magnolia area. yesterday i diverted my path and
5:12 am
found $4.55 at excel gas and mart on north first street in san jose. i did that with a combination of waze as well as gasbuddy.com. on the roadway, we're looking at no big deal as far as the commute. we do have a build out of the altamont circled at the top, a disabled vehicle reported on vasco road. on the shoulder, i believe. we'll track the speeds. they look like they're basically at the limit. no slowing there or across the bay bridge, no backup at the toll plaza and no metering lights. back to you. >> thanks, mike. final four is set. the matchups and highlights from uconn's big win. and the truth can hurt. truth social says it lost a lot of money and people got out of that stock really fast. >> speaking of money, how about this, still no winner. yes, the jackpot is growing for the powerball and your odds of winning. ay

good tuesday morning. right now at 5:15, we're taking a look at our day planner in mountain view. we're starting out at 52 degrees at 8:00, and look at all of the sunshine we'll see today. it's going to be a nice one, highs reaching into the low to mid-70s all across the bay area, and then tomorrow is when the clouds roll in and the temperatures cool off. so we'll talk about the changes, that's coming up in a few

minutes. nicely lit up here, the san mateo bridge. our view of westbound traffic with those taillights getting a new more cars over the last few minutes. you're at speed to the peninsula. we do have the bay bridge, there's an incident reported here. good morning, happy tuesday to you. the dow definitely did not go over 40,000 yesterday, stepping back from that mark quite a bit. united airlines offering unpaid time to some pilots, even as demand for travel continues. they just don't have the planes united says, because of the deliberate slowdown at boeing as the airplane maker refocuses on safety. shares in donald trump's truth social plunged after that company filed paperwork with the securities and exchange commission warning it lost $58 million in 2023. not a surprise. we talked about this last week. as i pointed out at the time, a

journalist had calculated truth social's revenue, the amount of money it makes before all of those losses, is one-fourth the amount of money a single cheesecake factory makes in a year. among the risks going forward, trump's many criminal trials, according to the document. truth social accountants also raised concern the company may not have enough money to last. a southern california family taking tesla to court over their model x, the suit describes how a mother parked her tesla in the garage, doors open. came home from the grocery store. the 2-year-old got back in the car, put it in drive and pinned her against the wall. the complaint reads she began screaming for help to neighbors across the street. they immediately ran over but were unable to stop and reverse the model x. she had to guide them how to stop, reverse and turn it off. tesla has no system to comment

to reports so we'll learn more in court. it's not the only trial tesla will face. there's a lawsuit filed by the family of an apple engineer in a self-driving tesla on 101 in mountain view in 2018 who was killed. federal crash investigators say the man was playing a game on his phone. the family argues tesla's claims about the car's ability led the driver to trust the car. we get the job opening and labor turnover report today. jolts for short. it shows us how many jobs are available in the u.s. that have gone unfilled. that number is getting smaller as the economy tightens up. but it's still huge, more than 5 million. we get the big jobs report on friday as well. you would think it would be good to know there's a lot of openings in there, but that drives up wages as bosses have to compete, and that can affect inflation. so this is one of those cases where good news is not necessarily goodness. >> but it's hard when it's just your news. >> yes, when it's you personally, you want a lot of job openings and a lot of pay.
5:19 am
>> thank you. micro, macro. uconn women's team is headed to the final four to face the iowa hawk eyes and caitlin clark. last night uconn played usc winning 80-53. uconn and iowa will square off in cleveland and a trip to the title game is on the line. nc state is playing south carolina, battling for their place in the title game as well. both games are happening friday night. trending this morning, another drawing without a big jackpot winner. so that means tomorrow's powerball jackpot is now worth $1.09 billion -- billion, yes, with a b. so those numbers on your screen right there, in case you want to see if you won any of the smaller prizes, the cash value wednesday is $527 million. the overall odds of winning the big jackpot is 1 in
5:20 am
229.2 million. >> you say i'll buy you a house and then you only win 2 bucks and you've still got to buy a house. >> what kind of house? [ laughter ] >> barbie dream house. >> house of cards. house of cards today, maybe not a great idea. it's a little breezy. >> it's going to be breezy once the next cold front comes in. we are still enjoying the nice weather today and this will be the last warm day with sunshine that we'll see until that cold front comes blasting in tomorrow. so looking at what to expect here, it is going to be cooler and we're also going to have rain and eventually some sierra snow. looking at palo alto this morning, it's 50 degrees, and we have some cool temperatures to start. we'll finally make it into the 60s by noon and eventually reach into the low 70s. we're going to see a cold front coming in off the coast, it's
5:21 am
going to take its time getting here. by the time the cooler air arrives, the rain will be behind that. we're going to see the arrival of the rain on thursday morning. we're also going to be monitoring for the potential of thunderstorms, off and on rain, and it's going to be cold enough, yes, in april, for our bay area hills and mountains to get some snow. so we're going to see some snow coating around that mount hamilton area, as well as in our north bay mountains. this is between thursday and friday. rainfall totals for most of us will be about 1/2 inch between those two days, maybe a little higher for santa rosa with three-quarters of an inch of rain and in the santa cruz mountains about one inch of rainfall. beyond that, we're going to have a chilly weekend, very unsettled, with off and on rain. as we go into next week, eventually it's going to warm up again. so we're looking at a lot of changes here, getting ready for that partial solar eclipse here in the bay area next monday.
5:22 am
it looks clear for that day. until then, we are going to see a lot of changes here, with temperatures really cooling off over the next several days. mike, you were getting reports of a hazard on the bay bridge. >> yeah, it also sounds like a crew got there very quickly on the bridge. see the flashing lights? they've been staying there. traffic bogs down just a bit and then clears. hopefully they'll have this cleared as quickly as they got there. we haven't seen a lot of slowing, but the sensors may start to change heading into san francisco. no delays getting toward the bay bridge itself, the maze, eastshore freeway, all moving smoothly. contra costa county, a little bit of slowing. highway 4 already, different than yesterday where you see a little bit of slowing happening in the last few minutes, highway 37 out of vallejo as well. standard build out of the altamont pass and no drama. back to you. >> i like that, no drama. well, we've got a little drama because next on "today in

calls, meteorologist kari hall. we've been calling you about what's happening with the weather. >> me, me, me, what about my forecast? >> i know, but i think today everybody can just relax because it's going to be a beautiful day. i'll start to get those questions tomorrow and thursday when the weather starts to change. so as of now, as you're heading out the door, it's going to be in the mid-40s in dublin and fremont and even in the low 40s in sonoma, while san francisco begins the day at 50 degrees. as we take a look at our highs this afternoon, look at how warm it's going to be. the warmest we've seen in a while and the warmest we will see for a while. 77 in san jose, morgan hill 77, and 75 in pleasanton, as well as martinez, oakland headed for a high of 71, and 68 in san mateo, san francisco in the mid-60s for today, and in the upper 60s, low 70s for much of the north bay, while ukiah will hit a high of 79 degrees. okay, we'll talk about the changes coming up. right now mike is tracking
5:32 am
an issue at the bay bridge. >> i have changes. the arrow right here, it's hard to see, but there's one set of flashing lights. our director will show you a close-up. there is still one set of flashing heights there. but one crew cleared and i believe they've got it pushed over to perhaps the left shoulder area. traffic is flowing smoother now across the bay bridge. still an incident and there may be more slowing. i think i see more lights heading over. the metering lights should get turned on any second because of this activity, most likely in the next couple of minutes. no problems getting through the area. east bay shows a pretty standard pattern, light traffic. but a little more than yesterday. a little fog registers where it says petaluma, north of san rafael. we're looking at a smooth drive despite that, and no problems sought of there. the south bay shows a little slowing in san jose right on schedule. this morning there is an investigation under way after a shooting outside a safeway store
5:33 am
in napa county, and it happened yesterday afternoon, broad daylight, 4:30 in the afternoon, in american canyon. three people were shot. police say someone opened fire in the parking lot of the grocery store. they have not made any arrests at this point, but officers do say they detained two people for questioning. anyone who saw the shooting is asked to call the napa county sheriff's department. happening now, nurses in the south bay are gearing up for day one to walk off the job. this is for a three-day strike. >> "today in the bay"'s ginger conejero saab is live outside valley medical center in san jose. ginger, what are the demands here? >> reporter: good morning, kris and marcus. well, nurses say that chronic understaffing is a major problem here at valley medical. they are demanding for increases in staffing, in pay, benefits, as well as security. now, santa clara valley medical says their proposed terms are generous. negotiations have not gotten
5:34 am
far. it's still pretty quiet. you can see santa clara valley medical behind us. no strikers yet, no nurses on the picket lines. that is expected to change in the next hour. today, tomorrow and thursday, nurses are walking off the job at this hospital, as well as two others and 13 clinics. one of the largest hospitals in california, nurses are striker at o'connor here in san jose as well and st. louise regional hospital in gilroy. santa clara valley health care says they have prepared for the impact of the strike, spending roughly $20 million in bringing in more than 1,000 contracted nurses. >> clearly it's very disruptive to our typical patient services, but we feel as though we have made the maximum effort to ensure that our services can continue to the community who we care for. >> reporter: last month 97% of the county nurses represented by
5:35 am
the registered nurses professional association voted to support this strike. the president of santa clara county's board of supervisors called the new contract terms on the table, which comes with an over 10% increase, generous. so we do expect -- we plan to hear from some of the nurses that will be on strike to get a better idea of why they were striking. it will be a three-day strike so the impacts will be felt. we'll have more in the next hour. back to you. >> thank you very much, ginger. well, san francisco supervisors are moving forward with a plan to put up more speed cameras in the city. today the city supervisors will vote on how to implement the project and where sfmta should lead the construction project. the cameras are part of an effort to crack down on speeding drivers. governor gavin newsom signed a bill last year which allows six california cities to install cameras.
5:36 am
there will be 33 in total across san francisco. in just a few hours the a's are going to meet with the city of oakland and alameda county leaders to talk about possibly extending the team's lease at the coliseum for another five years. the team is committed to play at the coliseum through this season, so that part is settled. in las vegas, a step forward in construction for the team's new stadium. the tropicana hotel closes today. sin city landmark closure comes ahead of the planned demolition so the a's can build a $1.5 billion stadium there. the a's hope to move in in 2028. a new california bill could give employees the right to ignore work texts after hours. san francisco assemblyman matt haney is behind the proposal and it would allow workers the right to disconnect, meaning they could not be penalized for ignoring work emails or texts after hours.
5:37 am
there are a few exceptions, like if you work for emergency services or there's an emergency at work. opponents argue the bill is vague and doesn't apply to all professions. california would be the first state to have a law like this if it passes. hundreds of tourists and locals are being impacted by the partial collapse of highway 1 that happened saturday afternoon in monterey county near big sur in the middle of the heavy rain. the damage forced crews to close that road, leaving many drivers with no way out. crews on sunday set up convoys where they're actually escorting drivers through that area, while many drivers have been able to pass through, tourists are still feeling the impact. >> we followed google maps and we thought google maps would know the road closures and stuff, but it apparently did not. we just learned about the slide. >> i hate when that happens. you're messed up because of what you're looking at on maps. those convoys will continue to happen daily, one at 8:00 a.m.,
5:38 am
and then another at 4:00 p.m. there's no set timeline on when this part of the road will be fixed. it looks like sunshine there. that's the bummer. we're going to have sunshine in san jose and around the bay area, kari tells us, but looking ahead, you've got some stuff in your forecast. >> yeah, there's not much more time to try to get those repairs done before this next storm comes in. you can see this long, thin line of clouds, and this is all associated with a cold front that's going to be coming through, with more cloud cover tomorrow and then the rain on thursday. the arrival of that timeline of the rain, it looks like it's at about 10:00, 10:30 on thursday morning, and then just getting heavier as we go throughout the day, off and on showers and even the possibility of thunderstorms as we go into friday morning. but notice the change in the colors here. that's a wintery mix, as well as snow on mount hamilton. so it looks like as you go up above 2,000 feet around the bay area, some of our hills will
5:39 am
have some snow, while our valleys will have a decent amount of rainfall. we're looking at about a half inch of rain between thursday and friday, and then things taper off on saturday. so we'll talk about all of the changes ahead. mike, you were seeing some slowing again at the bay bridge. >> yeah, we know the metering lights should get turned on and we saw the disabled vehicle on the span. but folks off of the 880 over-crossing, they are seeing the backup for some reason, and we also see the hov lanes slowing. they're starting to move again. maybe just a disabled vehicle. on the span we still have a disabled vehicle, so there is the backup. we have the metering lights on, too. notice the break in traffic, backed up at the toll plaza and then clearing across the span itself so folks can continue to help the one disabled vehicle as you're approaching treasure island in the commute direction. outside of that, an easy drive for most of the bay. we're predicting more crowds for the a's game tonight at 6:40, another game tomorrow at midday. keep that in mind as you're passing by the coliseum tonight.
5:40 am
on the other side of the bay, the warriors are home again, back tonight for a 7:00 game. that means more traffic off the 280 extension and coming into town. lots of options to get to chase center as well. the rest of the bay right now looking great, outside of that issue on the bay bridge. the south bay does show the little bit of slowing for north 101 through san jose. back to you. april is autism acceptance month. ahead this morning on "today in the bay," we highlight some symptoms and key signs which sometimes are overlooked. and it's shaping up that abortion will very much be a major issue in the upcoming elections. speaking of issues, training to fight fires at night. we're going to follow along as california pilots and crews prepare for thepcoming fire u

good tuesday morning. right now at 5:42, we're taking a look at our morning planner for santa clara. right now at 51 degrees and all clear, and the sunshine continues today. so that helps warm up our temperatures. at noon it's at a perfect 70 degrees, and we'll reach into the mid-70s today. we'll talk about a cooldown and when we get some rain coming back in just a few minutes. great news, we have traffic moving smoothly right here, the earlier flashing lights all cleared from the bay bridge traveling into san francisco. it's due to the fact that they
5:44 am
were slowing the traffic on the span. the backup back to its normal pattern, so the hov lane moving more smoothly. >> thanks, mike. if you have student loan debt, listen to this, president joe biden's relief program may be protected by a new law. democratic lawmakers are introducing the save plan act later today. it would codify the law -- into law that program, make that program part of the law. this comes after the biden administration encouraged borrowers to enroll. now, currently there are more than 7 million borrowers in the program. abortion is once again a major factor in politics. this time in florida. >> scott mcgrew has been following this. floridians will get their chance to vote on abortion in their state. but that has a huge implication for the presidential race? >> it does. it drives people to the polls. there's a rule of thumb, the more people who show up to the
