here's a closer look, you can see the plane flying in, and a bolt of lightning, making a direct strike on the plane. lightning strikes are more common than you might think. aviation experts say that most commercial planes are hit by lightning at least once a year. -- >> wow, not just rain and lightning but lots of hail. you can see just how much came down in belmont and enough water to trigger a small stream running alongside the street. another look at the hail piling up inside of a backyard. once again, also in belmont. let's get over to meteorologist rob mayeda. what a day. i know the lightning strike on the plane was wild and then you have been running around ever sense. it was an interesting day. we had thunderstorms and the hail was larger than what we would typically see. about pea sized hail. the storms were not moving, so watching buckets being dropped

down all over the bay area. over minutes of time, it starts to pile up and you can see how slow they were pushing away from the peninsula. the flood advisory and a strong thunderstorm alerts expiring around 8:00. the atmosphere beginning to stabilize. right now, things have dried out around san jose. a trend we should see moving forward into the easter sunday morning. active weather continues to transition into central and southern california. at least in terms of tomorrow morning, a few light showers passing by after midnight tonight, heading towards 9:00 a.m. tomorrow, for the midmorning easter egg hunts, things looking a lot more calm. with a calm start to the day, now the afternoon forecast. starting to see some changes and updates to the short range weather models we will bring in another chance of some showers near the mountains especially in the north bay. we will have the full hour by hour forecast for the rest of the weekend and warmer temperatures coming up in 10 minutes. we are following developing news out of the sierra were a

small plane crashed near truckee. the plane went down in a snowy and wooded area. first responders are holding the scene until investigators arrived tomorrow. they did confirm that they were at least two people killed in the crash. and on the flight tracking system, there was only one arrival due at the airport around the time of the crash. the flight originated out of colorado. the plane did not reach its destination. we are continuing to investigate and we will bring you the latest as we get it. now to san francisco where firefighters are trying to find a cause for a fire that has left a dozen people without a home. they also want to know, if there's any connection to another recent fire at a nearby church. the fire tore through this apartment complex in the mission district around 2:00 this morning. firefighters say it started in a car. and then it spread to two buildings on julian avenue.

it took some 95 firefighters to knock it down. requiring at least one rest kit. they have read type the apartment complex and that means no longer inhabitable. now we turn to a sign of the times. and a growing fear for every californian homeowner. people around the bay and the state now being told there homeowner insurance policies will not be renewed. insurance providers say that the policies are in areas that are now considered too high risk because they are too densely populated. nbc bay area's thom jensen explains. >> reporter: san francisco the second most densely populated city in the u.s. and some homeowners learned this week because of the designation there homeowner's policy will not be renewed. a woman who lost her napa county home in the tub's fire told me by email that state farm dropped her policy last week and she cannot find another private insurer to step in. it means you will likely have to be on the california fair

plan, subsidized by the state and it is expensive and only offers fire coverage, state farm issued a written statement to nbc bay area explaining its decision to no longer write new policies for new californian homes, and to an coverage for about 50,000 existing california customers. it reads -- "this decision was not made lightly and only after careful analysis of state farm's generals financial health which continues to be impacted by inflation, catastrophe exposure, reinsurance costs, and the limitations of working within decades-old insurance regulations." but the latest financial report shows a net worth of more than $134 billion. >> it feels like they are just trying to ration up the pressure on the california department of insurance. >> reporter: we talked to a nonprofit research group of the growing in the densely populated zones. the group says insurers have

been losing money due to california premium limits and that for every dollar insurance companies receive in premiums. it is spent on paying out claims. >> california is a very high risk state. >> reporter: the california department of insurance and commissioner ricardo lara are updating regulations that could bring more policy options at competitive prices back to the state. >> that would mean being able to charge what is commonly known as sound rates, something that is not occurring today. >> reporter: but it could take a few years for the california homeowners insurance industry to stabilize even after the new laws are enacted. >> but it will not happen right away. it is not immediate. >> reporter: in the meantime, homeowners are left worried about whether today's policy will still be there tomorrow. in san francisco, thom jensen, nbc bay area news. the mayoral race continues to heat up, the pushover votes came to chinatown. mark brown, who briefly served after the unexpected death of adley is among those running for mayor, during the rally, he

talked about growing up in chinatown, calling it the heart and soul of the city. also outlining his vision for improving san francisco, to expand police staffing to address the city's homeless crisis. >> we need to clean up the streets of san francisco once again. when i was mayor in 2018, we cleared all of the large encampments in our city. when i am mayor, i will do my first year. because i believe the sidewalks of our city block everybody. >> he also spoke with small business owners today. he's running in a crowded field that includes incumbent mayor london breed, and daniel lori, and san francisco supervisor tosha. standing up for the rights against discrimination, that was their message at a workshop today. >> and what you have got, i have made them. and i wanted to protect everyone here. >> that is esther of the

nonprofit, she created booklets on how to report a hate crime, during the anti-asian attacks. at the start of the pandemic. by the way, her work has been recognized by grammy award winning artist. they held a workshop for the community, among other things, the group divided self-defense training, private consultations on how to get mental health services and victim support. the workshop was interpreted in cantonese, mandarin and vietnamese. spending part of the day demanding local politicians push harder for a cease-fire in gaza. hundreds gathered in palo alto. and many say they have been going to city council seatings to demand the city approve a cease-fire resolution and they have also been holding vigils every sunday, to highlight the children killed in gaza. >> it is our duty as citizens. and their duty as local government to be able to speak up for upholding the values of our country.

and stand for human rights and equality and find ways to put pressure on ending the current conflict. >> organizers say that while members of the city council has held tops with them, none is formally agreed to support a resolution. israeli leaders have said they will not agree to a cease-fire until it includes the release of all hostages taken during the october attacks by hamas. in san jose, committee members come together to honor soldiers killed during the vietnam war. this was a remembrance ceremony for those soldiers of the vietnam war memorial in downtown san jose today. the ceremony began with presentation of the colors and remarks from local leaders and members of the memorial foundation, with the names of the fallen soldiers. the foundation says it is all part of their effort to get

back to those who gave everything. >> these were all of the boys lost, from san jose, that were lost in the soils of vietnam. >> you are one of the lucky ones. >> i was very lucky, my career field wasn't as critical but we were in direct support. we were there for them whenever they needed. and i was one of the lucky ones. >> this was the 11th anniversary of the vietnam memorial. a sold-out crowd and witnessed history today at paypal park as women's professional soccer made its debut in the bay area. 18,000 soccer fans came out for the inaugural bay fc home opener. in the final score may not have been what they hoped for, it didn't in the excitement. nbc bay area's emma goss was on hand, to witness sports history. >> reporter: bay fc has so many fans, especially a strong base of support among women and girls. who told me that having this professional women's soccer team in the bay area is a triumph and an inspiration. saturday night, the first ever home opener for bay fc.

now to the latest on the bridge disaster in baltimore, for the very first time. crews removed thousands of tons of twisted steel, from the river. highly trained salvage teams, making it more manageable. a crane in a barge will hoist the pieces out of the river. the goal is to open a temporary channel to allow more vessels to get to the wreckage. leaders in that movie what is left of the bridge and the cargo ship beneath it is going to be a painstaking and lengthy process. the last driver to make it off the bridge before the collapse, talking about the disaster. >> i told my daughter, it is just like, you know, it is very scary. >> nearly 400 people are working to get the river back

open. the search also continues for the bodies of four construction workers, killed in the disaster. a warning for millions of at&t customers, an investigation underway after a massive data leak. the company says the leak happened two weeks ago, and it affects more than 7 million current comps customers. more than 65 million former customers. they say the compromised information includes social security numbers, some of the information has been put on the dark web. at&t says it is contacting affected customers to offer free credit monitoring services. this is no april fools prank, nobody won the powerball jackpot tonight, so the big prize it will grow for the next four april 1st. the jackpot is expected to swell to at least 975 million and could balloon to 1 billion on how many try their luck. good luck, we know that nobody wanted all but we know that maybe you might have won

the bull's-eye were. lol so, belmont, obviously and even san jose, some decent rain totals here, over the last 24 hours. so right now, not much happening. 52 degrees. and some wet streets. and 50 degrees currently. and, so you have a plane going by. and services international airport. and partly cloudy skies. also 53 in san francisco. and so as we were talking about here, the radar is starting to wind down. and there will be one more wave of showers here. right there, that is going to drop in after midnight tonight, that will bring a few sprinkles, but right now, the drier part of the sunday forecast, likely to be for the morning easter egg hunts. and in the afternoon stay tuned. we will begin the days in the 40s. to see some top showers possible around sonoma and lake counties, and the highs tomorrow, still on the cool side with the mid-60s in san jose.

and, similar temperatures out towards the tri-valley. notice where the rain is expected to fall tomorrow. and select areas across the north bay. and sonoma county. and the mountains east of san jose. now as we show you the timeline on this. here is the overnight chance and if you like rain showers, that should be mostly moving out by tomorrow morning. and then things might pick up again as we head into the afternoon, watch the clouds building up in the north bay. and around the diablo range. and right there in the midafternoon to the early evening, so same timing yesterday but not as much moisture and the strength of these storms, not likely to be as strong, stronger storms out to the southeast for the afternoon, 6:00 you can see the showers moving from north to south, as we move forward into monday and tuesday, you can have the clearest guys and no showers in the forecast and the upper 60s and low 70s, this couldn't have been the weekend forecast right now, and monday and tuesday the warmest days of the week mid-to-upper 70s inland, beginning to cool

things off, on wednesday, because later next week we will go from high pressure, back into the low pressure again. thursday and into friday. that is more sierra snow, heading into next weekend and that cold air environment could mean more hail at times. later next week. so the roller coaster ride continues, with a few showers tomorrow. monday and tuesday looking pretty nice outside. wednesday not too bad but thursday and friday back at it again as we will see yet another weekend with some shower chances and some thunderstorms in the mix on friday. >> so that 85% of the showers on the weekend. it is going to go up. >> it wasn't just our imagination. >> thanks. the new soccer team, spoiled by a very close loss. >> we have highlights from bay

ever home game at paypal park, selling out the stadium to a crowd of 18,000. >> the new soccer team put on a thrilling match, coming up just short in the final minutes of the game, kind of a heartbreaker. bay fc got the first-ever call at home, in the 19th minute. dana castellano's, putting it up in the net, and houston dash, launching a comeback first time in and taking the lead, late in the second half with a rebound and the penalty kick. both late in the game, with extra time on the clock, bay fc ties it up again, and, they are floating it into the corner. but, it was a heartbreak, the houston dash spoiled it, with a late goal to lead it 3-2. beating the norman, bad news... i never graduated from med school.

sounds like a joke, and in many ways it is, but it's also very real. as you know, i love bible. it's my favorite book. i've definitely read it. my favorite part is probably the ending, how it all wraps up. but this is a very special bible. and it can be yours for the high, high price of $60. but i'm not doing this for the money. i'm doing this for the glory of god and for pandering and mostly for money. but it's so sad. religion and christianity are totally gone from this country, and we need them back. without religion, you don't have laws, you don't have mission trips. i'm told mission trips are a lot of fun. you go to mexico, build a house, maybe make out with someone on the last night. then it's back to clear water, florida like it never happened. but you're going to love my new
