a coveted beer is making its return in the moore bay. russian river brewing had it on tap at santa rosa and windsor. it is celebrating two decades. the beer still draws big crowds. the brewery advises people to expect an hours long wait on busy days. we spoke to one customer who slept in line overnight to get his pint. >> it is a greet group that works here. the folks that own the place have really done a lot for the community and they make this really fine beer, you know. it is the best of its kind in the world. it's something else. >> something else all right. it will be available until april 4th. >> he looks cozy though. >> definitely has his set up. be careful on the roads driving

[ laughter ] it's really -- but get this, despite his lawyers saying that he doesn't have the money to pay his bond, today, trump said that he has almost $500 million in cash. [ light laughter ] if you'd like to see the cash, trump's like, "it's totally real. it lives in canada and goes to a different school. you probably don't know it." [ laughter ] meanwhile, under his new fundraising agreement with the rnc, trump can now use political donations to pay his legal bills. trump was like, "it's the grift that keeps on grifting. it really is." [ laughter ] some news from washington. today, after the house passed a a bipartisan bill to fund the government and avert a a shutdown. marjorie taylor greene filed a a motion to remove mike johnson as house speaker. marjorie made the decision after listening to her colleagues, constituents, and zoltron, supreme leader of glargnak 6. it lives in canada and goes to a different school. you probably don't know him. marjorie would take the job as house speaker, but she's too busy being the house screamer, so -- [ laughter ] switching gears, yesterday dmvs across the country were hit by a massive network outage that caused service disruptions. people in line were like, "this is ridiculous. i should have been in and out in six hours. what's going on here?" [ laughter ] the dmv said the outage was caused by internet connection issues. yeah. in other words, the free trial expired on their boingo hot spot. [ laughter ] well, listen to this. i read that in an effort to attract wealthier shoppers, walmart is going to start selling high-end products. [ audience oohs ] it's very fancy. now the walmart greeter is wearing a tuxedo t-shirt. [ laughter ] now the shopping cart has four broken wheels with rims on them. [ laughter ] you guys, march madness is officially here. it's very exciting. [ cheers and applause ] there are so many amazing players in the tournament, but i notice that if you combine

[ laughter ] unfortunately, you have to get the pictures taken at the dmv, and they're having internet issues. one guy was like, "a new company? then who have i been sending all these photos to?" [ laughter ] [ applause ] and finally, guys, we're in the first week of spring, but the weather's been pretty unpredictable. i actually wrote a little song about it, if you -- if you don't mind. [ cheers ] >> jimmy: because i remember you posted this video of genesis when you were at the iheart music awards or iheartradio music awards. you were getting an award. >> right. >> jimmy: and he was interested in someone else. he was only three at the time. >> he was flirting. [ laughter ] like actually flirting. >> jimmy: flirting as a a 3-year-old. look at this video. watch this. >> jimmy: look at him. [ laughter ] he's so cute. he's like, "hi." >> jimmy: he's so -- and taylor was cute too right back. >> she was super cute. how do the not wave back to the most beautiful baby? he's so cute. >> thank you. thank you. they met up again recently, and he was like, "is she going to remember me?" it was a whole thing. >> jimmy: whoa, really? he went to the eras tour? >> yes. >> jimmy: and he was like, "she knows me." >> yeah, he was like, "right, 'cause she knew me since i was three, right, mom?" >> jimmy: i was three, yeah. >> okay. >> jimmy: and then you went back and met her, and here she is with genesis. >> aw. [ applause ] gen gen for the win. >> jimmy: he's for the "w." >> gen gen for the win. >> jimmy: what's his obsession with billie eilish now? >> i don't know. he just asks me every single day, "mom, can i please leave her a voice message?" and i'm like, "i don't know. what kind of voice message are you going to leave her? like what kind of voice message?" he's like, "i'm just going to say i would she be -- i would like to be friends and i really like her music." and so he leaves her this whole message after harassing me for days and days on end.

and then he continues to harass me if she wrote him a message back. and so every night i couldn't go to sleep. he wakes me up in the morning and the nighttime, he won't go to sleep. "did she write me, did she write me, did she write me, did she leave me a message?" she left him a message. >> jimmy: no. [ cheers and applause ] >> can you believe it? >> jimmy: isn't that great. these superstars are all awesome. billie eilish is great. >> they love their billie and taylor. >> jimmy: they're both good people. [ cheers and applause ] >> really good people/ >> jimmy: they are both good people. can we talk about good people? can we talk about "hell's kitchen" because i'm so excited. you created a broadway show. [ cheers and applause ] a broadway show. i went to go see a preview at the public theater. sold out run at the public. >> yes. >> jimmy: i remember looking at you and you were with your mom. >> right. >> jimmy: who is a big part of this play. >> yes. >> jimmy: it's a great story. and i was like, dude -- it's so nerve racking 'cause you know how much work goes into these things. no one realizes. when did you start working on this? >> i consider this my first child. >> jimmy: really?

>> this was 13 years ago that we started. >> jimmy: this is before genesis. >> before egypt, was "hell's kitchen," and now it's coming to life. >> jimmy: 13 years. >> 13 years, and now it's really on broadway. [ cheers and applause ] crazy. >> jimmy: it's a dream. >> it's a dream come true, and, you know, especially because my mother's a quintessential new york story. she grew up in toledo, ohio, begged her mom to come to nyu in new york. that was when she was in college and she really wanted to be a dancer and an actor. and she did all these things and she brought me into the theater community, taught me about it and showed me all of it and really enriched my life with it. and now, you know, we're able to create this piece about my experiences growing up in new york city in hell's kitchen, and she gets to live her dream through this, and it's really -- >> jimmy: i was looking at your mom while it was happening because i was like, i wonder what she's feeling right now watching someone play her and basically tell the story about how tough it is to be a single mom. >> and raise a girl.

>> jimmy: and raise alicia keys. [ laughter ] i mean seriously, though. >> but, you know, this isn't autobiographical, jimmy, so i don't want you to mislead the people. >> jimmy: i know yeah, but there's some -- there's certain things. >> there's definitely experiences that are infused into it that really give it that reality and that genuine authentic thing -- >> jimmy: and also it's got a a lot of your jams on there. >> yes. the music is so good! [ cheers and applause ] >> jimmy: "fallin'," "no one," "girl on fire." "if i ain't got you," "empire state of mind." it's all in the show. every song but lin manuel miranda -- was sitting in front of me, and as he should. [ light laughter ] and i kept going, like, "another jam." can you believe how many great songs she has?" and he's like -- then somebody else would come out, and was like -- ♪ some people want it all ♪ and he'd look back like, "dude." >> sing, jimmy. >> jimmy: and he would grab me. in front of you. but he would turn back and squeeze my leg like, "that's another jam, it's another jam." and then you wrote originals for it too. >> yes.

>> jimmy: that's amazing. >> there's so many original songs there too, which is really exciting. i loved writing original music for broadway. i kind of was able to mix some of the modern style of music with even bringing tastes of musical theater into it, and it's really fun. >> jimmy: but your husband, swizz beatz, he was like, he's not really into music, musicals. >> well, he's into music. >> jimmy: no, sorry. [ laughter ] no, he's definitely into music. >> he's not -- >> jimmy: he's not a musical guy. >> he's not really a musical guy. like, he's that guy, he's that husband -- i don't know if you all know this or have a husband like this. but he's that husband that i have to drag him to the musical. and then you're all excited watching it, and when you turn over and look at them, they're like asleep. [ laughter ] >> jimmy: it does get cozy in the theater, yeah. >> i'm like, "come on, man, wake up." >> jimmy: so you wrote this for him, saying, hey, dude, this is actually something everyone that can enjoy. >> that's right. this is the musical that whether you're a musical theater lover or even maybe more like my husband, you're going to love this show. this show brings you in. the story line is so powerful, beautiful. the music assists it and it's really incredible. michael greif is the director. kris diaz wrote the book.

[ cheers and applause ] >> jimmy: that's what i'm talking about. i have so many questions for you. first, you were telling me backstage that you were -- you almost didn't go for the audition for "hell's kitchen." >> yes. >> jimmy: w -- w -- w -- why? >> at the --

>> jimmy: nervous? >> nervous. i'm nervous right now. [ laughter ] >> jimmy: yeah. >> but at the time, i had -- i had left school, and i was starting to pursue, like, film and tv. so, by the time that the appointment, or the audition for the development of "hell's kitchen" down at the public theater downtown, i -- it came around, and i just kind of felt like i wasn't ready. i felt like i wasn't big enough yet, or i wasn't full enough to pursue something like this. and then -- >> jimmy: wow. who pushed you? who believed in you? >> okay, cheri takalski, who is my agent. give it up for cheri. >> cheri! >> and my parents and my -- my director from high school. his name is timothy walton. [ cheers and applause ] >> jimmy: that's awesome. from high school, and he was like -- >> he was like "go -- go do that. shut up. go do it." >> jimmy: go do that. go do it. try it. >> yes. >> jimmy: and look at you now. >> i know. yeah. >> jimmy: you're on broadway bud. this is a big deal. in a musical with alicia keys music. are you a fan obviously of alicia keys? did you grow up -- >> no. >> right. [ light laughter ] >> absolutely. i've been listening to alicia -- and this is really corny, but, like, you know how dad puts, like, the baby -- the headphones on the baby bump. >> jimmy: yeah. >> i was doing like "unbreakable" and "if i ain't got you" on the baby bump and stuff like that. >> jimmy: wait, so, you were -- when you were in -- >> yes. like yes. >> jimmy: no. >> yes. >> jimmy: so, you were listening your whole life. >> yes. >> jimmy: oh, my gosh. alicia, did you know that she was the one? >> absolutely. we all knew that she was the one. you know, it's -- it's a long journey. it takes a very special person. you have to be able to be a a killer dancer, killer singer, killer vocalist, killer actor. >> jimmy: yes. and she's so phenomenal. >> jimmy: and funny. >> and you have to have that new york energy. 'cause you can't -- it can't be a new york story, you know. [ cheers and applause ] so, she really captures all of it, and she's captivating.

she really takes you and you're with her. >> jimmy: yeah, you can't take your eyes off you when you come out on the stage. i'm like, this girl is phenomenal. >> did you just say i'm funny? >> jimmy: yes, you are funny. you are really funny. you are really -- when you go into the songs, when i was there, you go some of these songs are just like anthems. >> yes. >> jimmy: and everyone just starts singing it. >> mm-hm. >> jimmy: what's that like? do you go like, "oh yeah. of course, these are --" >> well, the wonderful thing about "hell's kitchen" is that the music team has redefined and re-imagined all the songs to fit the context of the story. so, it's like these classics and these anthems, but you've never heard them in this way before. so, they're real ear worms. >> jimmy: yeah. >> we had, like, a superfan in the front one day down at the public and that was -- >> she just took like -- she was like, "maleah, stand down. >> stand down." >> i got this. >> jimmy: i got this. let me do this next song. every song is catchy. every song is so catchy. the cast is amazing. i was going to say little kids are outside waiting for you

when you come out of the theater, and that's got to mean something to you, right? when you see -- that's the cool thing, right? >> that's like -- that's what we do it for. that's what we do it for. [ cheers and applause ] >> jimmy: when i left, i was going to -- you're young yourself. so, i was like, that's got to feel good. do you remember ever, like, seeing someone and you're like, that's -- i can't believe i met them or i saw that? >> i saw "waitress" with shoshana bean. that was years ago, and i stage doored her, and i remember being like, "i'm going to get a a picture." and my director was like -- "wait i'm too shy to ask." so, i was like, "okay, you go, you go, you go." and they have a picture together. i wish i could show you. but now the fact that i'm working with her, it's ridiculous. [ cheers and applause ] >> isn't that crazy? >> jimmy: isn't that wild. >> just full circle. >> shoshana bean plays jersey. brandon victor dixon plays davis. kecia lewis plays miss liza jane. this is a superstar, beautiful -- broadway's finest is really rallying around this, and it's really special.

[ cheers and applause ] >> yeah. >> jimmy: you were in "oppenheimer," which won best picture. you were in the best picture, and you directed a new film called "ezra" with robert de niro. [ cheers and applause ] >> yes. coming out may 31st. >> jimmy: may 31st. you've done a lot of directing before, but what's it like to direct robert de niro? >> you know -- [ laughter ] i tried to get the guy to go to acting class. [ laughter ] give someone a couple of oscars, and they're just overconfident. no, it was amazing. >> jimmy: how intimidating? >> he's just so -- such a a wonderful, warm person who's so -- such a pro and cares so much about what he does. of course, you know, you're terrified at first. >> jimmy: yeah. >> because he's -- you know, he's one of every actor's hero, you know. >> jimmy: he really is. >> so, yeah, it was funny. when we first met, i had -- he was our first choice. me and my oldest friend in the world -- my closest friend, tony spiridakis, wrote this beautiful screenplay based on

his relationship with his autistic son. and bobby cannavale plays a a comedian, and he and rose byrne, his wife, are going through a divorce. and they're having struggles with their kid and the story follows this. and he's living with his dad, who bob de niro plays. so, we cast bobby, and we were getting ready to -- you know, bob was our first choice. >> jimmy: bobby cannavale? >> bobby cannavale we had just cast. >> jimmy: the other bobby didn't cast. >> no, but de niro was our first choice. so, you know, these things usually you send out a script to a star like that, and it takes months to get an answer. >> jimmy: oh, yeah. >> and i think 48 hours after i'd sent josh, his agent, the script, it was like, "bob wants to engage. he's interested." so, bobby cannavale and i were both in l.a., and we go to meet with bob, you know. so, at that first meeting, we were both like trembling. >> jimmy: we're making a movie. now it's real. >> and it was real. so then it was like, "oh, god, we have to get the money together, and pull it together." >> jimmy: once he comes in, now it's a real movie. >> yeah. >> jimmy: then you reunite with your "ghost" co-star,

whoopi goldberg. >> whoopi goldberg is in it. >> jimmy: what was that -- she's also one of my faves. >> isn't she the best? no, whoopi -- this is hilarious. because you know, bobby and i were talking, "whoopi would be perfect for this." so, i emailed her. and i said, "i have this project and it's with bobby cannavale, and rose byrne, and bob de niro. and there's a part i think you'd be great. and she just wrote me back in ten seconds and said, "yes, i'll do it. sounds amazing." i said, "don't you want to read the script?" she said, "no, it sounds cool. i'll be there. tell me when to show up." [ cheers and applause ] >> jimmy: that's why she's the coolest. that's why she's great. you credit your wife, jane musky, for helping you get the role in "ghost." >> i do. >> jimmy: your wife is a a legend. >> she is. she will be so happy to hear you say that. [ cheers and applause ] >> jimmy: she is. >> she is. >> jimmy: the best of the best. >> one of the best production designers. >> jimmy: i got to work with her really quickly on "marry me." >> that's right. >> jimmy: and i couldn't believe it. my wife is a producer. >> i know. she said that nancy is one of the best producers she has ever worked with. >> jimmy: this is a lovefest. [ cheers and applause ] how did she get you the role in "ghost," or help with the role?

>> so -- jane's career kind of took off well before mine did. she was doing all kinds of big movies. like she did the first two coen brothers movies, and "when harry met sally," and many others. and so "ghost" was a big movie she was doing, and i was an unemployed actor and having to, you know -- >> jimmy: really? >> -- tough time. she would come home and say, "you know, there's this role they haven't cast in this movie." and i would look and i was like, "that's one of the lead roles. they're never going to cast me in this part." but she just -- and i called my agents, and my agents wouldn't take my call. [ laughter ] >> jimmy: isn't that great? >> she's just a good partner. she was like, "you gotta call." you know, she just kept on me. so, i finally harassed my agent so much that the assistant in my agent's office said, "i'm going to get you in on that." >> jimmy: see, this is the story. this is the great story. >> and miraculously i got that part. >> jimmy: the assistant got you the thing. and now it changed your whole life doing "ghost." and you crushed it. you originally were telling me backstage, if you don't mind telling it again, but you originally auditioned for juilliard.

can you just tell the story because i think it's funny. this is a big deal. >> i wanted to get -- you know, go to proper drama school and be a serious actor and all that. and one of the great schools to apply to, is the juilliard school in new york. it's one of the great acting institutions. so i go and audition for it, and i -- it's very intimidating, and i come to new york, and i'm a senior in college. and i audition, and i got called back. and what happens is you do your audition, and it's very intimidating. it's like they make it that way on purpose. then at least in those days, all of the hundreds of kids who are auditioning, they go and post a list on the call board midday saying who got called back. so, i see my name on the list. i was like, "oh, my god, i got called back." and you're supposed to come back later in the afternoon. so, i call -- you mentioned "ezra." my dear friend, tony spiridakis, who wrote "ezra," was my best friend way back then. >> jimmy: no way. >> i call him up, i'm like, "hey, i'm in new york. i'm doing this audition. i just got called back, and i have a few hours to kill. you want to get some lunch?"

he's said, "yeah, sure, great." he's a young actor at that time. he had not been a screenwriter yet. he said, "hey, let's work on your audition. i can help you. let me help you with your callback, so you do a really great job." >> jimmy: "so far it's okay. i already got a callback. i'm not sure if i need this help." >> that's what i should have said. [ laughter ] >> jimmy: he totally changed it? >> so, we go to this little park next to lincoln center, which is where juilliard is. and there's people all over the place, and he's like, "okay, do your piece." i'm like screaming and yelling doing like a shakespeare monologue and then a modern play monologue. and i'll you the modern play one, it's a monologue about a a guy who's basically talking to himself trying to figure out how he's going to chat up a a girl to take out on a date. and he's talking to himself. and he's like, "no, man, you got to put some context. you got to have an activity. you've got to be doing something. put yourself in the mirror. you need to be getting dressed in the morning as you're doing your --" i was like, "oh, that's a great idea." and i didn't really have time to work it out with him. he said, "yeah, so do a mirror and dress yourself." i'm like, "okay, cool." and i race back, barely make it back in time for my call back.

i go in and i get all set up, and there's like 20 faculty members all staring at me. i'm terrified. i get ready. i'm going to get dressed. >> jimmy: you do this for the first time. >> i had a sweater and a a button-down shirt on. so i pull a table over. i take off my sweater. i take off my button-down shirt, which takes a minute. i take it off. i'm bare chested by the way. [ laughter ] they're looking at me like, "what are you doing?" i lay it all out carefully on the table. i then start my monologue in the mirror. >> jimmy: yeah. >> and all i'm seeing are these stone-faced teachers looking at me like, "what is this guy doing?" and i freeze. i can't remember my lines. i'm absolutely in a panic. i'm bright red. i manage to stumble through my speech, but i realize i've forgotten to get dressed. [ laughter ] so, i finish the monologue -- >> jimmy: the whole thing. finish the monologue. >> i'm like half naked, and then it's over. i'm like, "oh, uh --"

>> jimmy: bye, guys. that was part of the act. >> so i have to stand there and get dressed while they're watching me going, "why doesn't this guy leave? please go." >> jimmy: he should just leave. you're not even talking at this point. then to watch you unfold your sweater. >> i had to move the furniture back. it was terrible. >> jimmy: and you hear the furniture squeaking. >> i was not admitted to the juilliard school. [ laughter ] >> jimmy: it all worked out pretty well. [ cheers and applause ] >> i'm still friends with tony. >> jimmy: let's talk "law & order." >> yeah. >> jimmy: this is a big deal. you have to follow in some big footsteps here. sam waterston, who just left the show. how did you get that call, and what do you feel like? is that pressure when you go in? >> not pressure. it was great. >> jimmy: it's a great fit by the way. >> "law & order" is like a a new york institution. sam is one of the kindest people in the world. one of my acting heroes. i got to direct him in the show. almost 20 years ago, i directed an episode of it, and he was just so lovely. i've been a fan of "law & order" from the very first -- i remember seeing the pilot of it.
