that's the san francisco chronicle endorsing democrat katie porter for senate over all other options. porter is "easily the most impressive candidate." "known for her grilling of corporate executives." with "deep policy knowledge." katie porter's housing plan has "bipartisan-friendly ideas to bring homebuilding costs down." and the chronicle praises "her ideas to end soft corruption in politics." let's shake up the senate. with democrat katie porter. i'm katie porter and i approve this message. the west snowed in. record-breaking snowfall from california to colorado, causing whiteout conditions and closing down interstates with another storm just behind it. meteorologist michelle grossman is here with what's to come. gearing up for super tuesday. nikki haley fresh off of her primary win, hoping to carry

"early today" starts right now. good morning. glad you're with me. i'm frances rivera. we begin this morning out west where the biggest snowstorm of the season has been pummelling the sierra nevada region for three days.
4:32 am
on sunday, an avalanche came crashing down on several cars south of lake tahoe. thankfully no one was injured. drivers battled life-threatening white 80 conditions on the roads, shutting down interstate 80 for miles. workers have been working tirelessly to clear the roads. and massive tow trucks had to be brought in to rescue tractor-trailers stranded in snowdrifts that went up to their windows. many semis were completely stranded on saturday. one couple described their harrowing experience driving through the snow. >> i thought we were going to get stuck a few times. it kind of felt like we were swimming through the snow almost. >> and while ski resorts were shut down, some skiers got cabin fever, despite the deadly avalanche risks. >> the storm has been pretty crazy. i've mostly just been hanging out inside. but today we're going go ski some mellow tree lines and hopefully avoid the avalanches.
4:33 am
>> and the region is expecting another storm today that could dump even more snow in the mountains. let's bring in nbc meteorologist michelle grossman who has been tracking that system for us. hi, michelle. >> hi, frances. great to see you. more snow as another system moves onshore. thankfully not quite as im impa impactful, but still could see 4 to 18 inches of snow across the mountains and could add another 1 to 3 inches of rain. the next system moving onshore, bringing that rain, that snow, the wind to the west coast. we're going see heavy rain and snow invading california. then as we go throughout tomorrow, you still see the blue on the map. that's where we're seeing the snow. the heavy rain, that's where we're seeing the brighter colors, the reds, oranges, yellows, extending into the rockies and the steady coastal rain bringing flash flooding because the ground is already really saturated. we could see the rain coming down heavily at times. by wednesday we'll start to dry out and the rain stretching into southern california. but notice in northern california, oregon, we're starting to dry out by wednesday. winter alerts. many will expire by 7:00 a.m.
4:34 am
still, we'll be watching the storm as we go throughout the day. also watching some soggy spots. we'll take a look at that in just a few minutes. >> michelle, thank you. now to breaking news in the race for the white house. nbc news projects that nikki haley has won the republican primary in washington, d.c. making this her first win in the race and awarding her 19 more delegates. and she also makes history as the first woman to ever win a gop primary. haley's campaign now hoping this will give her some momentum in tomorrow's super tuesday contest. nbc's alli vitali has more. >> what a great crowd, thank you! >> reporter: the final sprint to super tuesday. now let's talk what you need to do on tuesday. and what could be nikki haley's final stand. >> yes, i'm going keep on fighting. i need you to go tuesday and vote. >> reporter: on the trail in vermont and maine, two of the 15 states set to vote tuesday when more than 800 delegates will be dolled out. >> next up, as you know, super tuesday.

anniversary of bloody sunday. it is the day that police attacked hundreds of civil rights demonstrators trying to march across alabama, in support of voting rights. vice president kamala harris and other leaders led the procession that marched across the iconic edmund pettus bridge. kamala in the same speech in selma, vice president harris also addressed the situation in gaza. she demanded more aid be let into gaza and delivered the biden administration's most direct appeal yet for a ceasefire. >> given the immense scale of suffering in gaza, there must be an immediate ceasefire for at least the next six weeks. >> for the latest, let's go to claudio lavanga. good morning, claudio. what's the latest on ceasefire talks. >> good morning, frances. well, if you may remember last
4:38 am
week after taping "late night with seth meyers," president biden said that he was hopeful a ceasefire would be reached by today. turned out to be wishful thinking because we're very faer from that. talks of a ceasefire have stalled once again, this time because israel did not in the end send its delegation to cairo for the latest rounds of negotiations because it said that hamas did not send israel as requested the list of the remaining hostages in gaza. well, that means of course the negotiations are at a stalemate once again. now as you mentioned, kamala harris has called for a ceasefire at least that lasts at least six weeks. because that's the time frame that was on the table on the negotiation table and said that because -- she said that many times too many palestinians have now died and are starving. but perhaps the strongest message that the biden administration has sent to benjamin netanyahu is the invitation to washington to
