we are learning more about the recent round of american air strikes in syria, along with the the regionce members kille it comes alongside disturbing
3:01 am
reports indicating a looming catastrophe at gaza hospitals. we have a live report with the latest meanwhile, u.s. lawmakers locked in another shutdown showdown if you're feeling a jolt of deja vu, you are not alone. just six weeks after the last funding fight, congress is back at it. but can the new house speaker get his party in line? a controversial new trial uses a popular party drug to treat ptsd doctors and veterans praising mdma calling the results a game-changer how soon the fda might take a stance on the program. what happens in vegas might be hard for some jets fans to watch. we're breaking down the weekend in sports, including the sunday night nail-biter women nominate this year's grammy nominee list. see how girl power is breaking apart the entertainment industry's boys club it's monday, november 13th "early today" starts right now >> good morning. i'm phillip mena. >> glad you're with us
3:02 am
i'm frances rivera we begin this morning in the middle east where the u.s. has conducted air strikes against targets in eastern syria two locations were attacked, abu kamal and mayadin. this is the third strike against iranian-linked bases in that country since hamas launched war against israel a month ago claudio, good morning. what more can you tell us about the recent air strikes >> frances, phillip, good morning. the strikes targeted a training facility and a safe house in eastern syria used by iran's revolutionary guard and groups affiliated with it in a statement, the dod said the strikes were precise and it's the capabilities of those responsible for recent attacks against forces in iraq and syria. they believe there were also militias from iran's
3:03 am
revolutionary guard inside, but it's unclear whether there are any casualties among them. >> claudio, turning now to gaza, there is disturbing news coming out of the al-shifa hospital in gaza city. what can you tell us that? >> well, al-shifa is the biggest hospital in the whole of gaza. and according to the palestinian health ministry, it has been left without electricity since saturday morning as heavy bombardment and fighting have intensified outside of the complex. now according to the ministry, since throughout the weekend, because of the lack of electricity, at least 13 patients, including three babies have died, and that at least 35 other babies that were born prematurely are faced now, and i quote, possible death at any moment now since the start of the war, the hospitals all across gaza have been completely overwhelmed with patients, with people who are injured, due to heavy bombardment. but also people who were seeking shelter.
3:04 am
and despite that, they have come under a fire, and most of them, if not all of them now are without electricity, making the job for doctors practically impossible but now according to international law, hospitals are not legitimate targets in a war, but israel says they are because they are being used as command centers by hamas well, now benjamin netanyahu appeared on "meet the press" yesterday, and kristen welker asked him whether the facts that they claims they have been using them as command centers justifies the lives of sick patients and babies are in jeopardy let's take a listen. >> i think every civilian death, every dead baby is a tragedy but that tragedy should be placed squarely at the responsibility of hamas that is keeping its military installations inside hospitals, its command posts inside hospitals, inside schools, inside unrwa, u.n. facilities and so on. we obviously don't want to give them immunity.
3:05 am

3:06 am
mike pence last month. scott has yet to endorse any of his fellow candidates, and he downplayed the idea of a potential vice presidential bid. it is deja vu in d.c. where the clock is ticking toward another government shutdown this morning. it was just six weeks ago we have the same conversation when a last-minute deal averted a shutdown but now there is new house speaker, and he has no plan to keep the government. but does he have enough supporter from his allies? >> there is just phi days left until the government shuts down. some of what's at stake, pay for military and federal worker, while social security and medicare checks will still go out. new house speaker mike johnson now pushing an untested plan to keep the government open with a two-step approach. the first would fund some parts of the government until january. the second funding the rest until february but notably absent from the plan, military aid to israel and spending cuts.
3:07 am
johnson can only afford to lose four votes, and right now at least three house republicans publicly oppose his plan the new speaker trying to convince hard-line holdouts of the urgency felt by some members of his caucus. >> it is too urgent. we can't sit back and do nothing. >> reporter: but johnson's plan may hinge on democrats' support. >> it looks gimmicky to me but i'm open to what the house is talking about. >> reporter: relying on democrats could prove risky. it was former speaker kevin mccarthy's decision to work with democrats on the last continuing resolution that ultimately cost him the gavel. >> our thanks to allie raffa for that report. another member of president trump's family will be returning to the witness stand in the trump organization's civil fraud trial. donald trump jr. will appears a the first witness for the defense in the case. the former president and three of his children all took the stand over the last two weeks in new york state's $250 million
