good thursday morning to you. i am marcus washington. >> i am laura garcia. we will get a look at the morning commute in a bit, but first let's talk about the forecast. it's a cold start. >> it's cold but it's clear, and maybe the clearest time of our day. we will start to see clouds coming in and temperatures going from the 30s and 40s we're seeing now to some 50s and 60s for highs this afternoon, and we are headed for the upper 60s in san josé. look at the middle of the day. we will see a lot of clouds rolling by. a look around the bay area with our high temperatures headed for the upper 60s and low 70s. los gatos will hit a high of 71 degrees today. 66 in martinez. we will also see upper 60s in the north bay, but we are also going to see more clouds coming in a little earlier. there may be a couple spotty light showers. by tomorrow we are back to the sunshine. we are still keeping some of the same temperatures with our highs about normal for this time of year with upper 60s and low 70s. the weekend is looking slightly

warmer as we prepare for rain ahead. more on that coming up in a few minutes. mike, you are seeing a crash and slowing there in sfo. >> yeah, a report of two different crashes, and details are coming in different. northbound 101, the one i am concerned with involves a motorcycle and a couple vehicles and a lot of debris around the broadway exit. these two happened at the same time in the chp account. slow head into burlingame. and then over here in the east bay, contra costa county, a lighter flow, the typical pattern. richmond slowing as well. a lot of folks heading to the bay bridge where we have the backup. >> thanks, mike. overnight there was a police pursuit across multiple freeways, and it started when

officers tried to pull over a stolen car in brentwood. the suspect led them on a long pursuit, and it ended at 1:00 in the morning. the suspect was wanted for an armed carjacking but surrendered without incident. and then a man accused in the violent attack in the home of nancy pelosi. >> you know, kris, we are not able to hear you. we will work on your microphone in a bit. we will get that ironed out with kris and come back in just a moment this morning. san francisco is transforming to welcome the world of leaders and dignitaries

for the upcoming apec summit. you can see the barriers and fencing in place. if you are headed anywhere in that area, expect roadblocks and a lot of security out there at several paw rim turz. san francisco public works says apec helped to push projects to the top of the list, like painting a bridge and beautifying some of the crosswalks. and sfo expect to see more international travelers flying in on private aircraft. those flights are handled at the north side of the airport, away from passenger terminals. and ginger conejero saab will have a live report in our next half hour, including some of the confusion ahead of next week's summit. now to overnight developments in the middle east. we have a live look at southern israel's border with gaza. in the latest fighting, israeli forces are claiming to have killed a top hamas anti-tank

commander and capturing a hamas stronghold. israel is insisting the release of its 240 hostages before it's any cease-fire. this has tens of thousands of palestinians are in the process of vacating gaza city for points south, including another 50,000 yesterday alone. bay area palestinians are organizing a new protest today in calls for the cease-fire and for the u.s. to end its aid to israel. one gathering starts at 10:00 a.m. in santa clara on mission college boulevard. later students are planning to walkout at mound hayden park. and then a solidarity protest in oakland on clay street is at

4:30. and then this is the man accused of the violent attack in san francisco at the home of nancy pelosi. >> kris sanchez has been following all of this. we were saying the defendant revealed a lot during questioning, and this most likely will come out in the trial. >> yes, and sorry about the mic issue. today the federal trial begins, and we do expect to hear from paul pelosi from the witness stand during the trial and maybe even from the suspect himself, but neither of them today. the attorneys today will launch the case with the opening statements. the government's case will focus on how david depape broke into nancy pelosi's home and beat her husband, paul pelosi, days before the mid-term election. that was caught on police body camera. david depape pleaded guilty to

assault on the immediate family of a government official. our legal analyst says it was a hard jury to seat because the public was exposed to so many elements of the case already. for david depape, even if he does not take the stand, the jury will hear his thoughts and words from the documents and words he wrote online. >> we will see how that plays in terms of the a jury's reaction in the statement from the police, and he seemed to fill in the blanks for the police and prosecution when he was giving his statement. it's a very big piece of the case, because it goes to his intent. it also will look -- the jury will look at that statement and say, is this somebody that is unhinged or somebody who is rational and these statements should be taken at face value? >> david depape allegedly told authorities he had other targets including a women's and queer

study professor, mom -- tom hanks. he questioned the results of the 2020 election and echoed baseless right-wing qanon conspiracy theories. those statements were taken down shortly after his arrest. if he is convicted, he faces life in prison on the federal charges. he was charged in state court with attempted murder, elder abuse, residential burglary and other felonies, and he pleaded not guilty to those charges. the sentences could be served concurrently. laura. >> right. he pleaded not guilty. >> not guilty.

we are following the latest on the trial on air and online. stay with nbc bay area for the latest. and then helping struggling veterans make it in the bay. santa clara purchased a housing facility, and there will be a press conference this morning to discuss the new acquisition. since 2009, the facility has provided transitional housing serving more than 6,000 veterans. the county says it hopes to create more temporary and permanent housing on site in the future. let's take a live look outside overlooking walnut creek in the east bay this morning. clear skies out there making for crisp temperatures. kari has a look at our forecast. we have a nice start to our day, and we are also feeling cooler than normal for many inland spots, like dublin where

temperatures in the upper 30s right now, and oakland 44 degrees and stepping out to upper 40s in san francisco. it's freezing in petaluma right now. 32 degrees. the sky is all clear. we will stay in the 30s through 7:00, but a nice warm-up as we see more clouds coming in. temperatures are heading for the mid-60s there. in the south bay expect a high of 68 in san josé. mountain view headed for 66 degrees. gilroy reaching 70. saratoga in the upper 60s. back to you. >> thanks, kari. taking a live look outside at some of the major bay area freeways. we're following the major proposal from transportation leaders that would definitely have an impact on anybody that drives. >> mike inouye breaking down what the agency is considering. this is important for folks to pay attention to. we are talking about paid tolls on all lanes. >> yeah, we pay a toll if we opt

for the faster drive, right? they believe if drivers have to pay a toll to use the freeway, it could reduce pollution, which we do want. it would cost drivers anywhere from 10 to 30 cents per mile, and if you drive 40 miles a day, five days a week, it would cost you $270 a month. low-income drivers would get a discount. many we spoke with said the idea doesn't make sense to them. >> i would rather not pay because i drive more in the mornings than at night where there is no traffic. >> we need the freeways to go to work. if there's an emergency or accident, why are you charging to get on the freeway? >> that's a question for us in california here, but other parts of our country and other countries do charge for all freeways as well. again, this proposal is still in

sfo. the crash still blocking part of the freeway there, as well as a new crash in san josé, and that could be a new complication for silicon valley. happy thursday to you. a number of layoffs to tell you about. next door cutting staff, block, which used to be called square, is doing the same. instacart had its first quarterly report as a publicly traded company after its debut on the market in september. instacart changed the way people shopped. people who never would have dreamed of getting groceries delivered now think nothing of it. and instacart just sold shares to the public 62 days ago. president biden will head to a car plant in illinois today. stellantis agreed to reopen the factory as part of the negotiations with the uaw.

remember, biden sided squarely with labor in their recent strike. bloomberg reports chinese president will have dinner with businesses when he visits san francisco for apec next week. the guest list is private but hundreds of names long, according to reports. and then a man that just invested crazy levels of money in san josé and up the peninsula, i once said he reminded me of the monopoly man with dollar bills spilling out of his pockets. turns out not all of his investments paid off. he lost $6.2 billion in the last quarter, and most of the loss comes from the bankruptcy of one of its big investments. not the first time he lost money

holy grail. it contains 300 books from the dc collection. >> there are classics there. trending this morning, pilots and some passengers on a recent flight from sfo got an unexpected treat. >> they were able to get a glimpse of the northern lights. sfo twitter page tweeted out video from the cockpit. it illuminated the night sky, and it's caused by solar winds and particles in the atmosphere. the reaction creates a colorful light in the sky. >> a lot of people travel to alaska to see that. i have friends that do that. but they were just in the air. >> a flight and a show. >> you can't predict when that

is going to happen? >> yeah, you can. that's really cool. we have a clear sky for this morning and then later this afternoon we will see clouds coming in. here's the next system approaching. as it is right now, it's weakening. it does continue to dry up, but we will see an increase in cloud cover as it moves in today. while the weather is dry, it's time to prepare. we are looking at a widespread rain event that starts tuesday and continues through thursday. we could see one to three inches of rainfall next week, and one to two feet of sierra snow. all of the rainfall could result in brief flooding. we will, once again, need this time to prepare. this was part of an atmospheric river targeting the pacific

northwest. can you see the dry air here by the shades of the light brown there, and the green indicates where there's a high amount of moisture. all of that moisture moving through, and it does encounter that dry air and it gets cut off as an area of low pressure. by the time we get to early next week, we will see a plume of moisture that could bring in quite a bit of rainfall starting tuesday into wednesday, and then we continue to see it into thursday before it wraps up for the end of next week. in terms of the drought status, we for the first time in 22 years are seeing it completely drought free. we have been in what we call a mega drought across the region. with breaks here and there. it's really nice to see that we do not currently have a drought status declared anywhere in california. our reservoirs right now are at about 67% of capacity for the larger reservoirs across the

state. they are lowering and getting ready for all of the rain that we most likely have coming our way for next week starting into our winter season. looking at our forecast for the next few days, once again now is the time to get the patio furniture put away, and all of the things around the house prepared for possibly rain and high wind. it looks nice this weekend to get those things done with highs in the low 70s. mike, you are watching a crash. >> this is north of 92 heading up through burlingame near the broadway exit, there's a crash with a motorcycle, and i believe there's injuries but the motorcycle driver is breathing and that's a good report. now, metering lights are on the

u.s. secretary janet yellen will begin two days of talk in san francisco with the new leader of china's treasury. it comes ahead of the summit next week. yellen is expected to express concerns about unfair economic practices and potential areas of cooperation with china. president biden, meanwhile, is still on track to meet during next week's summit with chinese leader, xi jinping. and this morning the no to apec coalition is expected to march. >> there's confusion about just how many road closures will happen, and security zones will be impacting everyday life in the area. ginger conejero saab joins us live outside the moscone center.

ginger, how are people in that area preparing? >> reporter: well, marcus and laura, the people we spoke with say they will simply play things by ear, and they have seen the flyers given out around the neighborhood and the parking signs have been up for a couple days now. and things are really feeling like they are getting under way, but there's still the confusion about how things will play out, especially when it comes to work. >> we were told that we don't have to close, but as an ice rink facility, we were told we cannot bring our figure skates or hockey sticks in, and that means we will lose maybe quite a few customers. >> reporter: that woman works at the ice rink close by.

she said she was initially told they were going to be closed, and then that changed. the plan is to open for a day or two to test things out at first. this family owns a sandwich shop on the corner of 4th and folsom on the cusp of the tighter security zone and the more green pedestrian zone, and they are also testing things out at first, and opening for a day or so and hoping the apec will drive in orders. >> we are telling the delivery people, you know, like, i don't know how it's going to be for you guys, but, you know, they are not going to allow cars in so maybe use bicycles and stuff. i don't know. we will see how it happens. >> reporter: this comes as the city's transformation kicks into high gear. barriers on semi trucks were brought in last night. fencing expected to be put in areas in the next couple of

days. new parking signs are up all over the parameter, and some enforcement started as early as yesterday. and they are pushing beautification projects to a higher priority. beautifying a crosswalk in china town and beautifying a bridge in japan town. things will look more official later today with a flag-raising ceremony at city hall, and that will officially begin to welcome visitors into the city. we are covering apec all next week, and as you know there will be so many things happening in the area as well as the demonstrations that you both mentioned, so a lot to watch out for. >> we will have you ready to go, if you are going out there or not, we will have it here on "today in the bay." 6:36 right now.

south bay advocates plan to air their grievances in the wake of a text messaging scandal involving a now-fired police department. last week the department announced the firing of an officer that sent racist text messages to another officer, and mcnamara injured green after green refused to drop a gun after a brawl. police later determined green was trying to disarm the tulsa is that correct. new concerns this morning over the health of apple cofounder and silicon valley icon, steve wozniak. he fainted while attending the world business forum. it happened shortly after he

delivered an address. he may have experienced vertigo. steve jobs and steve wozniak developed apple from a garage. scott mcgrew, there are five candidates looking for attention, but not everybody got the spotlight. >> i think tim scott, in particular, didn't get as much time as he wanted to. and people would argue ron desantis did what he did in the past, play it safe, and that leaves chris christie and nikki haley and vivek ramaswamy. let's talk policy before we get to the bickering. there were two places where the candidates struggled, abortion,

and how they differentiate themselves from trump. some candidates want it both ways, they don't want to alienate trump supporters. >> he said republicans will get tired of winning. we saw last night, i am sick of republicans losing. in florida i showed how it's done. one year ago here we won a historic victory, including a massive landslide here in miami-dade county. >> i will say this about donald trump. anybody that will be spending the next year and a half of their life focusing keeping themselves out of jail or courtrooms can be lead the country. >> the republican party in general, as they saw in ohio, voters will come out to support abortion rights. most candidates tried to keep a foot in both sides of the camp,

abortion restrictions as they existed post roe, but no further. and businessman, ramaswamy attacked candidates early and often, here again against the only female on the stage. >> do you want a leader from a different generation that will put this country first, or do you want dick cheney in three-inch heels. >> i think the sound bite you will most see on social media is when he brought up nikki haley's daughter. >> in the last debate she made fun of me for joining tiktok while her own daughter was using the app for a long time, and she might want to take care of your family, first. >> leave my daughter out of your voice. >> that's the point. yeah, her supports are propping her up and that's fine --

>> you are just scum. >> i'm a mom, so the second you go and start saying something about my 25-year-old daughter, i will get my back up. >> and no doubt that sound bite will be ahead on the "today" show. a fourth debate coming up on december 6th, and that will have more strict requirements to qualify, so we could see fewer candidates on the stage. it doesn't mean they have to drop out of the race, it just means they can't be in the debate. we will see. >> thank you. the lighting of a holiday tree in union square, this is the 34th year of the great tree lighting ceremony and that will be a fixture in the square until next year. kari hall, people should be bundled up.

>> yeah, it will feel cooler, and we will see temperatures in the mid-50s for the tree lighting and a partly to mostly cloudy sky. at the sharks game in san josé, starts out at 50 degrees as you head into the sap center. we are dropping into the low 50s by the end of the game. this weekend kicks off the glowfari lantern festival at the zoo. make sure the whole family is dressed for quickly falling temperatures into the mid-50s. on saturday we have got the warriors game at the chase center. it's going to be in the upper 50s as we get that game kicked off. we will talk more about what is going on for the bay area heading into next week, coming up. mike will take us back to the peninsula? >> yeah, we have the crash going on on the 101. there's a motorcycle and an

injured rider, but i think they are not life-threatening injuries. we just have a bigger backup forming up towards san mateo and just shy of sfo. the rest of the east bay towards the bay bridge moving smoothly. we are looking over towards san francisco, and right now we have impact from the apec summit next week, but right now this one portion of california is rerouted around the fremont and they had to de-energize the lines to prepare for next week. ginger is preparing for more changes, getting ready to set up the parameter. lanes on the bay bridge will be affected. these three main areas will be impacted next week because of apec. we will track it for you. back to you. >> thank you. at least the hollywood ending we were all waiting for. up next, the deal to wrap the hollywood actor's strike.

let's get a look at our day planner in livermore where we start out in the low 40s at 8:00. at noon it's becoming partly to mostly cloudy and temperatures in the mid-60s. we stay in the 60s for the rest of the afternoon. a little cooler for some. we will get a look at that and the weekend forecast, coming up. right now we are looking at the san mateo bridge westbound. we are looking at the taillights away from us. this is slow. the volume build out of hayward. if you are heading north, we do have a jam on north 101. we will continue to track that crash as you approach sfo. new details out of hollywood, sag-aftra and the major movie studios reached a tentative deal. the actors have been on strike for more than seven months.

bay, and then back to the dry conditions for the weekend. next week we are prepared for a more widespread rain event. it looks to come in between tuesday and thursday, and could bring the bay area anywhere from 1 to 3 inches of rainfall. the sierra could see 1 to 2 feet of snowfall. that may all result in flooding, so we need to prepare this weekend while we are still enjoying the mild and dry weather. here's a look at the plume of mid level moisture. we are seeing lots of green there. it has been targeting the pacific northwest with an atmospheric river. it gets cut off as the low drops down, but it will help bring in the moisture further south into the bay area, and we can see that ramp up as early as tuesday into wednesday. widespread showers continuing, and it looks really soggy for us for much of next week. once again, we have a few more days to prepare for that with our temperatures staying nice and seasonable. cool mornings and mild afternoons, a mix of sun and

welcome back. we are moving you forward with a look at our top stories on "today in the bay." >> one person is in custody following a police pursuit across multiple freeways. police say it started when officers tried to pull over a stolen car on highway 4 in brentwood. the suspect led them on a long pursuit that ended in west berkeley. a photographer caught some of the pursuit before it ended a little before 1:00 a.m. the suspect was wanted for an

armed carjacking and surrendered without incident. and then opening statements expected in the trial of the man connected to the beating of paul pelosi last fall. he's facing a state trial and similar charges, and that case will only play out after the federal trial wraps. the first of what is expected to be a protest tied to next week's apec summit at 10:30 this morning. activist are marching. in the meantime, new barriers are in place ahead of the summit. san francisco public works says apec helped to push some projects to the top, like painting a pedestrian bridge and beautifying crosswalks. as you step out the door
