east bay. opening statements set to begin in federal court for the man accused in the violent attack at pelosi's home. we learn about the evidence that could make or break the case for prosecutors. the apec summit wrapping up, and activist expected to make their voices heard in hours. what to expect if you are headed to the city. this is "today in the bay." good morning to you on this thursday. i am marcus washington. >> i am laura garcia. we are starting out with clear skies, and then seeing clouds roll in today. it will be slightly cooler, but we are already feeling the chill in the air this morning. take a look at some of the numbers. it's now 35 degrees in sonoma this morning. it's cold out there. we're getting started with temperatures in the upper 30s in

dublin and in livermore. we are in the mid-40s in san josé. it's 38 in palo alto. as we go throughout the day, this is a look at our highs. we are headed for the upper 60s, a few low 70s for los gatos, 71 and morgan hill. we will see mostly upper 60s for the north bay. we will talk about when we could see rain in our forecast coming up. mike, you have been watching parts of the tri-valley. >> yeah, kari, we had a lot of slowing showing up in the last 20 minutes approaching the dublin interchange, and it completely cleared and now we are back to a normal flow. i believe what happened was the crews that came up from el charro to the interchange itself, i believe those crews cleared in the westbound direction. there's slowing out of the altamont pass. a couple crashes on the shoulder, and doesn't seem like they are related and are not presenting any slowing.

southbound 660, a crash there around jacqueline. things have not opened up for contra costa county. >> thank you, mike. we begin with breaking news overnight in an arrest in the east bay following a police pursuit across multiple freeways. police say it started when officers tried to pull over a stolen car in brentwood, and the suspect led them on a long pursuit that ended in west berkeley where this video was shot a little after 1:00 in the morning. the suspect is wanted for an armed carjacking and surrendered without incident. and then today in the bay's kris sanchez joins us now. kris, what police say the defendant revealed in questioning, this could be interesting. >> today the federal trial

begins, and we do expect to hear from paul pelosi from the witness stand, and maybe even the suspect, david depape himself, though neither of them today. today the attorneys will launch into the case with opening statements about how david depape broke into pelosi's home and beat her husband, allegedly with a hammer, days before the mid-term election. we say allegedly but we did see that unfold on video. depape has plead not guilty on the federal charges. jury selection wrapped earlier this week, and the legal analyst said it was a hard jury to seat because the public was exposed to so many elements of the case already. as for david depape, if the jury does not take the stand --

>> we will see how that plays in germs of the jurors' reaction, because they did a detained question and answer with mr. depape, and he seemed to fill in the blanks for the police and prosecution when giving his statement. it's a very big piece of the case, because it goes to his intent, and it also will look at the -- the jury will look at that statement is say is this somebody who is unhinged or somebody who is rational and these statements should be taken at face value? >> in the statements, david depape allegedly told authorities he had other targets, including a professor, and actor, tom hanks, and gavin newsom, and joe biden's son, hunter biden. he talked about global elites and questioned the results of the 2020 election and echoed the

baseless right wing qanon conspiracies. all of the information about that is in the public space, and the jury is expected to hear some of that. he allegedly told authorities that, again, he had other targets but focused in on paul pelosi. you may wonder how this affects the state's case. the state's case is coming after the federal case, because depending on what happens in the federal case, if depape is convicted the two cases could merge and he could serve those times concurrently. >> thank you. that will be an interesting one to follow. san francisco, as you may well know, transforming to welcome world leaders and dignitaries for the upcoming apec summit. if you are headed to san francisco, expect roadblocks and a massive security force and

several perimeters. there are barriers and lots of fencing getting set up around the moscone center. apec pushed projects to the top like painting a pedestrian bridge and beautifying crosswalks. sfo expect an increase of international travelers in private aircraft activity, and those flights are handled away from the passenger terminals. federal and local law enforcement agencies say they will have all hands on deck. at 5:30, ginger conejero saab will talk about the tightened security around some of the iconic san francisco landmarks, and is diving deeper into how local businesses are preparing. now to overnight developments in the middle east. here's a live look at the southern israel border with gaza. israeli forces are claiming to have killed a top hamas tank

commander in capturing a hamas stronghold. the u.s. is pushing for a pause in fighting up to three days, and israel is still insisting on the release of its hostages before there's any cease-fire. bay area palestinian supporters now organizing new protests today to call for a cease-fire, and for the u.s. to end its aid to israel. one gathering starts at 10:00 a.m. on santa clara on mission college boulevard. later this morning, hayward high school students are organizing a walkout at mount eden park. usf students plan to protest at noon on fulton street, and there's a student walkout planned at the civic center at 3:00 p.m., and what is being called a solidarity protest is happening in oakland on clay street at 4:30.

and then back in september santa clara supervisors approved the purchase of a veteran's emergency housing facility on kirk avenue in san josé. leaders will hold a press conference this morning to discuss the acquisition. supervisors hope to access housing for veterans. the county says it hopes to create more temporary and permanent housing on site in the future. let's take a live look outside this morning at the golden gate bridge. meteorologist, kari hall, is looking at the temperatures out there. >> as you get ready to step out the door, you probably have the heater kicking on in the house especially if temperatures are in the 30s, like we are seeing in dublin. it's 48 degrees in san francisco. san josé starts out this morning at 46 degrees, and 44 in

oakland. a look at the forecast for the east bay with our highs headed for the upper 60s, it will be slightly cooler compared to yesterday as more clouds move in. eventually we will see rain, so i will have more on that in the forecast coming up in a few minutes. >> thanks, kari. let's take a live look outside again at some of the major bay area freeways. we are following up on a major proposal for transportation leaders that would definitely have an impact on anybody that drives a car? >> mike, we are talking about pay tolls on all lanes? >> yeah, folks, as you are waking up, all lanes, not just the express lanes marked as high occupancy or express lanes. if commuters have to pay a toll to use the freeway, it would cause less crowding. there was a virtual webinar that laid out the proposal for tolls,

and it would cost drivers anywhere from 10 to 30 cents per mile. if you drive 40 miles a day, five days a week, it would cost 270 a month. >> i would rather not pay, because i drive more in the mornings than at night. >> we need the freeways to drop our children off and go to work. >> we need to maintain the freeways. the proposal is still in the early stages with the commission still seeking public feedback. you heard feedback just then. nothing is imminent, but any potential tolls would not begin until 2035, so time to think about it and weigh in. it would help california meet its greenhouse emission goals by the same year. coming up on "today in the

for san francisco today. it starts out partly cloudy and actually the morning will probably be the clearest time of the day. we will see clouds coming in and temperatures only reach into the low and mid-60s. we're watching out for parts of the bay area to get a little rain. we will have more on that and what's ahead coming up in a few minutes. this is one of the clearer times of the day. for oakland, and the nimitz freeway moving smoothly. both bridges and this freeway moving nicely. we will see how things are shaping up. we should see a little slowing in the next 20 minutes. good morning. happy thursday to you. a number of layoffs to tell you about. next door cutting staff, block, which used to be square, you know, the credit card reader will cap the number of employees at that company, and cap is smaller than the number of people that work there

presently, so read between the lines on that one. and then instacart, people use them for deliveries and the pandemic really changed the way people shop. people who would never have dreamed of getting that, instacart just sold shares to the public for the first time 62 days ago. president biden will head to a car plant in illinois today to help workers there celebrate the reopening of a car parts plant. stellantis agreed to reopen it as part of the negotiations with the uaw. here he is earlier as the first sitting president in history to walk the picket line. and then apparently there are

hundreds of names on the guest list on it. and then the head of japan's soft bank, and it has invested crazy levels of money in silicon valley. not all of his investments pay off. he lost $6.2 billion last quarter -- not last year, in the past three months. that's a ton of money. just .2 is $200 million. most of that comes from the bankruptcy of one of the investments. he poured $300 million into a dog walking service called wag. that didn't work out either. he takes big bets, and sometimes he's very wrong, and he

in higher places. >> she would really like it if she put it on the fridge. >> with a magnet. >> exactly. we are starting out with cold temperatures this morning, and it's going to be a mild day but not as sunny as it has been. take a look at walnut creek's planner with a mostly sunny start. cold temperatures will be in the upper 40s, and today we will see temperatures in the mid-60s as it turns mostly cloudy. we are also going to see much of the 60s in the bay area, and as you look at your 7-day forecast at the bottom of the screen, there will be a slight chance of rain. temperatures go up a few notches for parts of the inland areas tomorrow with concord hitting 71 degrees. still in the mid-60s in san francisco. as we go into saturday, the temperatures go up a couple more degrees as we continue with sunshine, but we are going to be watching some rain ahead.

as we get a look at the system approaching now, we are going to see all of these clouds pushing in today, but there's not a lot of rain with it and it's moving up against some dry air. only parts of the north bay may see rain. going into next week, we are watching out for a widespread rain event, and this looks to mainly hit the bay area from tuesday to thursday. we could see one to three inches of rain and possibly some big sierra snow if it does come down as snow, and it could be a mix of rain and snow as well. this may all result in flooding in some areas. you want to start preparing this weekend while it's still dry. this is what is happening. we are seeing an atmospheric river move into the pacific northwest, and it kind of gets cut off from some of the moisture as an area of low pressure moves down the coast, and a look at that shows there will be plenty of moisture level behind. go into the weekend it's dry,

and then the system approaching monday into tuesday, and that will continue throughout the next couple of days from tuesday to thursday, and the north bay looks to get the highest amount with the potential now of about two to three inches of rainfall. it may be even higher for the upper elevations. once again this weekend, while we are looking at highs in the low 70s and a mix of sun and clouds, be prepared for the changes that we'll see. prepare the yard and everything around your home for some not only wet weather, but also much cooler temperatures. mike, you are looking at a crash near sfo? >> yeah, a couple crashes and they are not far apart. i think all of the activity here is just north of airport boulevard. no major injuries, but paramedics are on scene and the fire crew is on scene and are blocking the slow lane. a few cars involved. no major injuries. that's slow on 101 heading up through burlingame.

having too much fun there, buddy! >> he has the best assignment of the day. let's check in with kari. she has a look at our forecast. it's a cold one. >> bundle up. temperatures in much of the bay area dropped into the 30s and low 40s. it's in the mid-30s right now in sonoma. that's one of the colder temperatures i am seeing. 49 in los gatos. 40 in morgan hill. in pittsburg we have a cool start to the day, but we are also starting our day with sunshine that will gradually give way to more clouds. we are going from 48 degrees at 8:00 to about 65 degrees later today. we will talk about where we will see the clouds and also some rain. that's coming up in the full microclimate forecast. >> sounds good. we will check back with you, kari. hours from now janet yellen will begin new talks this week

the people we talk to say they are playing things by ear. they have seen the parking signs already up. they have seen flyers in the neighborhood. these barriers have recently, as you can see, been delivered and they are getting ready for apec, but people in the neighborhood say they are going to wait and see how things play out, especially when it comes to work. >> we were told that we don't have to close, but as an ice cream -- ice facility, we cannot bring hockey sticks or skates in, and we will lose quite a few customers. >> a woman that works at the ice risk nearby was initially told they would be closed the entire week of apec, but that changed. the plan is to open a day or two to see how things work out.

this woman owns a sandwich shop in the more green pedestrian zone, and they are also testing the first couple of days hoping apec would drive in business instead of push it out. >> we have been telling the delivery people, you know, i don't know how it's going to be for you guys, but they are not allowing any cars in so maybe use bicycles and stuff. i don't know. we will see how it happens. >> reporter: the city's transformation is kicking into high gear, and barriers were brought in last night. that's what you are seeing this morning as well. fencing expected to be put in in designated areas. sf public works pushed beautification projects to higher priority, like painting a

there were two places i thought the candidates particularly struggled. abortion and how they differentiate themselves from the frontrunner, donald trump. don't alienate trump supporters, and yet convince them not to vote for trump. and candidates backed by trump generally don't win. >> he said republicans would get tired of winning, and in florida i showed how it was done. one year ago here we won a historic victory, including a massive landslide right here in miami-dade county. >> i will say this about donald trump. anybody that will spend the next year and a half of their life focusing on keeping themselves out of jail or courtrooms cannot lead the party or country. >> the issue of abortion, a quandary for the republican

60s, and then the temperature drops quick as we approach sunset. a nice and cool evening with a light wind. we also have the sharks game tonight in san josé where temperatures start out in the mid-50s and drop down to about 50 degrees. and glowfari will be kicking off. make sure you wear the layers, because we will see the temperatures dipping to the mid-50s by the end of the evening. we are also checking out the forecast for the warriors game. it will be in the low 60s to start, maybe around dinnertime. as you are going into the chase center, our temperatures drop into the upper 50s with the mostly clear sky. kind of a cool weekend. mike, you are looking at slowing on highway 101. >> a couple spots for 101. we expect the typical commute

pattern, and we predict this slowing every morning from 680 up to oakland road. this is a surprise for some folks unless you have been watching me track this crash. just past the airport boulevard, we have slowing, still one lane blocked, crews on scene and minor injuries. 280 is clear getting into san francisco. right now looking at what is going on for apec, which is a big deal for next week, and right now we have one portion of california that de-energized overhead wires, and that means they have to use trolly cars. this is near the center where they are setting things up. where ginger was, that's where they are preparing for the moscone center. we will warn you when they have closed lanes on the bridge, and right now we have typical slowing into san francisco.

things are moving pretty well. we will show you how things are shaping up on the peninsula. we still have the crash near sfo. new this morning, air safety front and center with the busy travel season around the corner. not only is it a top priority for families but for airport workers as well. delta's ceo talks this morning with "today"'s savannah guthrie, saying they are focussing on safety and efficiency. he will address the string of close calls on the tarmac and in the skies. airlines constantly consider safety so their passengers don't have to. >> they are close calls but they are not turn into the horrible incidents you have seen in other parts of the world. from our standpoint, we work on this every day. we don't talk about safety, because safety is our priority. we don't want you to be concerned with it because we are concerned with it every hour of the day.

>> some 6 million people are expected to fly delta alone during the thanksgiving weekend, and delta says it's ready to handle the surge, but crowds should still arrive early to the airport. sag-aftra and the studios reached a tentative deal. the battle was over three key points, increases in minimum payments, compensation for streamed content and the use of artificial intelligence. overnight on social media sag president, fran drescher, says the deal is three times the last contract. new ground broken everywhere. the contract will need to be ratified by the members. and nbc bay area is owned by universal, one of the studios involved in the negotiations.

next week with a widespread rain event on tuesday through thursday. we could see one to three inches of rain across the bay area, and one to two feet of snow in the sierra. this could result in flooding so this is the weekend to prepare for the potential of the big change in our weather pattern while it's still dry. we are looking at great weather this weekend. we have also seen a lot of atmospheric rivers targeting the pacific northwest. can you see the mid level moisture with the green, and it gets cut off from the tropical moisture as we see the system moving to the bay area, but it will still have a lot of energy and that's going to bring in rounds of rain next week, starting late monday into tuesday morning. we will see that rain continuing off and on into tuesday, wednesday, and thursday. the sierra gets snow. then we will see it winding down for that friday. it will be a very active weather pattern. after a span of dry days and

welcome back. turning to our climate in crisis. marine life in the monterey bay is being threatened by trash that humans are leaving at the beach. that's according to noaa's

monterey marine. it did the study from 2017 to 2021, and plastic fragments and cigarette butts accounted for more than half of the debris. and there were appliances found along the waterfront. cigarette butts are a concern because they contain chemicals toxic to marine organisms. how can we move our communities forward to protect the beaches? we have heard it before that placing your trash in the cans does help or participating in some of the beach cleanup events. we spoke with pam from the marine sanctuary, and she said our choices when it comes to plastic products can play a part. >> consumerism is huge.
