right now at 11:00, new details coming to light surrounding the mom accused of throwing alcohol-fueled sex parties for young teenagers in
11:01 am
the south bay. the hearing under way as prosecutors outline the case ahead of her ahead of a possible plea deal. first we want to start with breaking news just coming into our newsroom. the former president of peru surrenders to federal law enforcement in san jose. he is accused of accepting millions of dollars in bribes in one of the biggest scandals in latin-american history. this week, a judge denied his motion to stop extradition back to peru. our photographer says he is inside a federal courthouse in san jose right now. he was originally arrested in 2019 but released in 2020 because of the pandemic. he had been under house arrest since then. thanks for joining us. i'm kris sanchez. marcus and laura are off. our top local story now, the mom accused of hosting those wild parties for young teens appearing before a judge today. nbc bay area's pete suratos was in the courtroom as proceedings started this morning.
11:02 am
prosecutors laying out some pretty disturbing details in those allegations. >> reporter: yeah. definitely some disturbing details and emotional statements from some of these victims, kris. the court hearing did just wrap up, and shannon o'connor, who we're talking about here, that so-called party mom from los gatos, she was in court today. now, the district attorney did present some of that witness testimony for the judge to consider when it comes to sentencing o'connor. just some background, she previously pled guilty to dozens of charges, 39 charges all together, and those charges include child endangerment, providing alcohol to minors, as well as sexual battery. but today was all about these witness statements. i want to talk about some of the testimony that we were able to hear. now, you have a deputy d.a. read about four victims' statements. these victims were around 14 years old. they were either freshmen or entering their freshmen year. we heard from a few victims today and their parents.
11:03 am
it painted a picture of these parties, these alcohol-fueled sex parties that she was allegedly putting together that was targeting the friends of her teenage son. these parents talked about how she gained the trust of these parents to allow their kids to go to her home, and at that point those kids were given a heavy amount of alcohol. one kid said he was -- one of the kids was passed out from the alcohol. then another quote from a parent who said her daughter was taught to drink like a rock star to take part in these alleged sex parties. as far as the next steps, on may 5th, the deputy d.a. says the judge will have an informal meeting with the district attorney and the defense attorneys where they will recommend what the sentencing may be for o'connor. then they'll come back on may 16th, and it will be presented to connor during that court hearing that's scheduled for may 16th. live in san jose, pete suratos, nbc bay area news. >> thank you very much, pete.

developing now, the clock continues to tick down on the u.s. supreme court's self-imposed deadline. ten hours from now, it will have to decide what to do about those abortion pills. scott mcgrew is watching that decision. the court has to decide to deal with an emergency request for a stay, but remind us, because it's so complicated -- >> it is. i can certainly do that. it started with a texas judge who ruled the abortion drug was banned. now the fda, which is in charge of which drugs are safe and are not, they disagreed with the ruling saying that has to be the central question to this case. does the court have power over us, the fda, to decide what drugs are allowed on the market? can judges overrule medical experts about medicine? the appellate judge said the texas judge was wrong, that he could change fda rules created
11:05 am
decades ago. but the appellate court came up with its own ruling. the courts can change more recent fda decisions that made access to the pill easier, like allowing it to be mailed. now it says the supreme court, which has set a midnight eastern time deadline to make a decision on a biden administration request to suspend all of these rulings, which would allow the pill to continue to be available to women. now, there are three possible rulings on that emergency appeal today. one, the high court could allow the pill to remain on the market until the case is finished in the lower courts. two, they could decide to hear the case themselves. and, three, they could allow the rulings to stand with their new restrictions on abortion pills. there's kind of a fourth option, kris, and that is the court could just change its own deadline. after all, they're the supreme court. >> right. >> there's nobody above them to tell them what to do. >> they set the deadline
11:06 am
themselves. that is a drug not just used for abortions but miscarriage care as well. it's very complicated. california, though, has been very independent saying whatever is happening in other states, we're not -- >> going our own way, but it still affects us because abortion in general would still be available in california, of course, but the new rules that are set in texas on when the pills would be available to women, you know, whether they could be mailed, that would be true here as well because of the supreme court. if the court rules that way. now, when are they going to rule? we expect some time today. they have that midnight eastern time deadline, but we're not sure when. >> 9:00 our time is the latest. >> yeah. >> thank you very much. a live look at the golden gate bridge. you see those tourists taking those pictures because it is mostly clear and it is a gorgeous day. we know the third hour of the "today" show team were in sonoma this weekend. vianey, you're here for kari.

11:10 am
>> so, if you see indications of mortgage rates coming down, particularly a big decline in interest rates for mortgages, then you can expect home prices to go up over the subsequent two months. >> based on these trends, home buyers could have more leverage to negotiate a good deal as the spring housing market starts to heat up. all right. we are now talking about dove nation, and my apologies for wearing the enemy color. the warriors hardly missing a beat without one of their stars, draymond green. green you know was suspended for one game, and gary payton jr. was out as well. the warriors, though, they roared back to life last night, winning last night's game three, which was critical for the warriors to come back to win the first-round playoff series. steph curry led the way, dropping 37 points, and kevon looney pulled in 20 rebounds as
