7:00 pm
i'm raj mathai. next on nbc bay area news tonight, gunned down while simply doing his job. >> blake's life was cut short by this senseless act of violence. >> a home depot worker killed after confronting a shoplifter. we'll hear from the people who knew him, and the lawmaker who is trying to make workplaces safer. also, we'll tell you why
7:01 pm
governor newsom made a surprise visit to the tenderloin today. and did the nba get it wrong by suspending draymond? >> they know dealing with draymond, draymond is the full package. to get the goods, you got to deal with some of the off stuff. >> we're joined by a warriors insider. and also, joint statement by e-40 and the kings. and check this out, the yet to be released tesla cyber truck. we'll tell you where we spotted it. good evening. this is nbc bay area news tonight. i'm raj mathai. a lot happening on this 4/20 eve. the bay area will be buzzing tomorrow. we'll get to that in just a minute. but we start with that horrific crime at the home depot in the east bay. an employee shot and killed while on the job. police and city leaders calling it senseless. the young man killed just months away from getting married. his name blake mohs, 26 years old. a loss prevention employee at the pleasanton home depot.
7:02 pm
this was part of our breaking news yesterday when he died after trying to stop a shoplifter. today, police said benicia knapp, there is a photo of her tried to leave through the back door of that home depot carrying a charging device. mohs tried to stop her. a emotional altercation followed, and that's when investigators say knapps shot mows. mohs was well respected within the community. >> he had an interest in law enforcement. he was involved in youth law enforcement programs. i understand he was an eagle scout. we had some aspirations of being involved in law enforcement. >> amazing in terms of human being, individual. >> police tracked the suspected shooter to oakland where they made an arrest. they also said that the alleged shooter had her 2-year-old child in the car. coming up in a few minutes, how often employees are forced to deal with shoplifters. another headline we're
7:03 pm
watching, governor newsom in the tenderloin today getting an up close look at the fentanyl crisis. the governor was with california attorney general rob bonta. a spokesperson with the governor's office tells us this was part of a private cabinet meeting which focused on the drug crisis, along with homelessness and other critical issues. something else to note, accidental overdose deaths are on the rise and trending higher than what we've seen in previous years. so far, the medical examiner's office in san francisco has tracked 200 overdose deaths. most include fentanyl. last year at this time, there were 140. also tonight, it was all a misunderstanding. bay area hip-hop icon e-40 and the sacramento kings have apparently made up. this comes after e-40 was ejected from game one. it was big deal. cell phone video here from saturday night showing the rapper getting escorted out of the arena there in sacramento. this was near the end of the game. it happened after an argument with a fan in the fourth
7:04 pm
quarter. e-40, whose name is earl stevens was accused of blocking the view of fans behind him. e-40 said he was actually getting heckled throughout the game, and his ejection was racially motivated. today e-40 and the kings issuing a joint statement. it said the ejection resulted from a miscommunication, and that contrary to speculation, e-40 was not standing excessively. the statement goes on to say, quote, the organization has been a long-time leader in promoting social justice and racial equality. and the kings look forward to welcoming e-40 back to our arena in the future. so what about draymond green? coming up in a few minutes, we'll talk about his one-game suspension and his future with the warriors. okay. check the calendar. today is april 19th. that means tomorrow is 4/20. the annual celebration of all things cannabis. be warned, it could be a traffic mess in san francisco. this is what it usually looks
7:05 pm
like this. is the scene, the crowd from last year. thousands of people down below at hippie hill. 20,000 people are expected at golden gate park. well ahead of the actual moment of the celebration, which is at 4:20 p.m. this is the second year that onsite cannabis sales are legal. rec and parks and police are expecting heavy traffic. keep in mind there is also a giants game and a warriors play-off game tomorrow night in the city. >> walk, take public transit. the best ways to get here are the n-judah or the 7 line. muni will be running free shuttles to the event starting at 4:00. so it will be easy. >> and nobody under 21 will be allowed within the fenced in area at golden gate park. we want to return to the deadly shooting inside the home depot. we know the shoplifting is a big problem for a lot of bay area stores. in fact, across the region. how often it is actually happening? our investigative reporter hilda gutierrez joins us now. hilda, you've been going over
7:06 pm
all the numbers and all the data. what is it revealing about this problem? >> it is very revealing. we're looking specifically at the city of san francisco. we're looking at the city of san franciscoecause the department, the police department here actually tracks shoplifting, specifically shoplifting. and we did find a new normal. as you can see here on this graph, when we looked at 2020, there was definitely a 34% decrease. that's because covid hit and everything shut down. >> sure. >> and we looked at 2021, and there was a 15% increase. the numbers kept going on in 2022. last year we saw about 2900 shopliftings reported in the city. >> so it's not just anecdotal. because we all talk about it so much. looking at the data on the bar graphs here, it is going up. we've seen all these grab and go video, cell phone videos of crimes happening specifically in san francisco. even that walgreens stands in mind. what are people not doing? what's happening here? why does it continue to happen, i should say? >> so we spoke to a former retired police officer. he is also an expert in security
7:07 pm
who tells us there is a reason. the reason is because there is not enough consequences in the city. that's what he is saying. according to california law, if there is merchandise that is valid under $950, that shoplift is considered a misdemeanor. oftentimes they don't get investigated. and as we see, different police departments are having difficulties recruiting and retaining police officers. so that's part of it. >> that's the threshold. $950. it's a misdemeanor, not even worth a lot of police departments' time. >> absolutely. >> what's happening? if i'm in a store and see this happening or a store employee, are we all instrublged to stay back and not get involved like we saw with the home depot employee yesterday? >> according to an expert and also because of state law, licensed security guards here in the state are only mandated to observe and report. he is saying customers and witnesses should do the same thing. do not interfere with the shoplifting. do not go ahead and approach the suspect.
7:08 pm
and you could observe. you could report, and only if it's safe, record with your cell phone >> observe and report, and sadly it did not happen yesterday. thank you, hilda. let's move on here there is a bill now working its way through the state legislature to make sure companies keep track of any violence in the workplace, and actively develop training to protect workers from violence. state senator dave cortese introduced this bill. he represents the area of pleasanton near where that home depot is located. >> there needs to be a wellness center set up. in this particular case, i don't know all the fax behind it. but we're running into situations from time to time, as you know. we saw what happened in half moon bay recently, where it's a coworker situation. you have to wonder why we're not putting more wellness requirements in place, more
7:09 pm
intervention in place ahead of time so that we're intercepting people when they're starting to get that frustrated. certainly there is retailers who are not aware, doing the right thing or are not investing in plans. but this bill goes beyond just retail. we want to make sure that every workplace environment, including governmental workplaces, including schools are protected from a lack of plans, a lack of contingency plans, meaning what you do once something starts to happen. are prohibited from telling employees that it's their responsibility to chase people down. but we think, you know, there really is no price on the life of the 26-year-old that was really put into a position prescribed, prescribed position to intervene with dangerous people in a retail workplace. and workers want to feel safe.
7:10 pm
they want to be able to go to work and know they're going to return home to their families. >> senator cortese specifically talking about the young man there at that home depot in pleasanton. let's move on now, get back to the warriors. you might know by now, draymond green is out for game three which is tomorrow night. he has been suspended by the nba for stomping on that kings player. it happened monday night in sacramento. da montis sabonis grabs draymond by the ankle. draymond stomps back. draymond's history of unsportsmanlike acts is part of the reason for the one-game suspension without pay. >> what do i think of it? again, these are the decisions they make. we live with them. and that's all we can do. and in the middle of the series, you don't have a lot of time to think about these things. just like if somebody gets hurt you, have to play with who you have. >> i was extremely surprised, and then immediate --
7:11 pm
immediately into all right, what's next. how do we win the diem zbham so there is no time spend worrying it or thinking about it or complaining. it doesn't matter. >> it changes a little bit. i can't be out there as much because don't have draymond to back me up. and jk going to have to play little more and we can't all be in foul trouble. change from that perspective. we got some depth. we've got lamb, whoever is throughout is physical. and i don't think my minutes are going to change too much. go out there and play a little smarter. >> joining us now is monte poole with nbc sports bay area. nice to have you back on the program. you were there at chase center throughout the day, listening to the news conferences. you've been around for a long time here. have we had something like this recently in the bay area? any sport, any team with a
7:12 pm
suspension that's so questionable? >> not to this degree, you know. you may recall back in preseason when draymond green punched jordan poole during a practice, there was a time of tension and drama around the franchise. but there was no suspension. draymond was just sent away future a few day, and he came back, and they resumed as if they were ready for the season. so this is different. draymond has been suspended before. but that was in 2016 during the nba finals he missed game. and we all know that the outcome of that series hinges largely on that suspension. he missed a game. the warriors never recovered and lost a series in seven games to the cleveland cavaliers. this is a test for a game now down 0-2 to the kings. game three on thursday night will be without draymond green. >> did the nba overstep the bounds here? is this fair? we understand what he did was wrong in sacramento a couple of nights ago. but was it wrong enough to be suspended this game three?
7:13 pm
>> yeah, i think, you know, bob myers, warriors general manager said he was surprised. steve kerr used the term extremely surprised. in game two he was given an automatic ejection and i think they expected maybe a fine. but the league discussed this over a long period of time on tuesday and didn't decide until almost midnight eastern time. so it was aboutut 9 9:00 here w bob myers got the call. steph curry, talked to draymond, and the warriors were unhappy with the results. but as of this point, there is no real recourse for it. >> pretty curious the nba was forthright and saying this is not just about what happened in sacramento, but kind of the breadth of his past unsportsmanlike acts. have we had that before where a league suspends you because of what you've done in the past? >> i have not seen that in that kind of language before where it
7:14 pm
makes the unsportsmanlike act. we know he has a history does. we thought that might come into play. we call it the draymond rule because some players get away with, draymond may not get away with, because he is draymond and does have that history. but for the league to come out and say that as part of their announcement was little surprising. you would think given the gravity of the series and given the physicality in the series with the kings, the fact that the initiator was sabonis, the warriors have no choice but to deal with it. >> i believe draymond green can opt out of his contract at the end of the season. does he stay with the warriors or say it's time for everyone to move on here? >> yeah, he has indicated a desire to stay with the warriors. the warriors, i think people with the warriors who believe, maybe it's time for draymond to go. i think others would love to have him here. it is ultimately up to him.
7:15 pm
if he wants to stay, he will stay and they'll deal with it. if he wants to go out, some of the warriors here would be okay, maybe it's time. >> perhaps this was inspiration. can they win game three on thursday tomorrow night without draymond green? >> i think they can. i think they have to make it a series. it's possible. but again, we know what happened last time draymond missed a game. they never won again. so i think this is different and i think they have a chance because they've been so good at home. i would give the warriors a pretty good shot to win the game. >> the heart and soul of the warriors. moe poole, thanks for your appreciate it. we'll see you at the arena tomorrow night. speaking of tomorrow night, game three. you can watch it right on our sister station, nbc sports bay area with the announcers a analysts who have been covering the warriors all season long. our pregame show with chris mullin and vonta hill starts at 6:00 p.m. all right. up next, more layoffs. what's behind the latest round

bay area tech workers. more layoffs at meta. this is mark zuckerberg's second round of job cuts within the last six months. today's layoffs largely from the services and software sectors of the company. they're part of the 10,000 job cuts announced in march, just last month. meta also announced 11,000 layoffs last november. meta grew at an incredibly fast pace during the pandemic lockdown partly because of facebook and instagram, the social networks were grow, and that's because the company was building up its planned metaverse. and it's the metaverse that suffered the deepest cuts. joining us now scott budman. we talk about the metaverse. that's the big pet project for mark zuckerberg. that a big issue now? is that dragging down the company? >> it was dragging down the company, raj, and it was really dragging down the company stock. now that a lot of those workers are out of jobs, this is what zuckerberg is calling the year of efficient it is. bad news if you were a software

engineer or designer. good news if you're a meta shareholder. back in november, the stock price traded below $90 a share. as of today it closed at $215. so a gain of more than 150% in the stock price as meta sheds tens of thousands of workers. >> a lot of people, investors love it when companies shed some of the excess fat to get more lean and be more efficient. other tech companies have been cutting as well. is in a nervous time for people in silicon valley? do tech workers get nervous? is there anyone throughout hiring? >> yes to both. it's a nervous time because who knows who is going to be next and how deep the cuts will be at the company you're working at. on the other hand, venture capitalists are starting to spend money again. they tell me they're really interested in artificial intelligence companies, obviously software companies. so there are jobs throughout in smaller tech companies if you're willing to do that. i was told by an h.r. expert
