12:00 pm
hello, everyone. i'm kate snow. >> i'm savannah sellers. nbc "news daily" starts right now.
12:01 pm
today, monday, april 17, 2023. hunt for a killer. police in alabama searching for the gunman who opened fire on a birthday party, killing four, and injuring dozens. what we're learning now about the victims. mystery at sea. the frantic search for three americans after their boat vanishes near mexico. what's being done right now to track them down. mouse trap. florida's governor ron desantis announcing his latest move against disney. the efforts against one of the biggest companies in the world. and sun block. what researchers are calling a melanoma vaccine. we'll tell what you they can do which is pretty incredible. we begin this hour with another american community torn apart by gun violence. >> this time it happened in alabama. four people are dead, 28 others are hurt after a shooting during a birthday party.
12:02 pm
a sweet 16. the gunfire erupting in a ballroom dance studio -- a dance studio i should say, and authorities are searching for the gunman still on the run 24 hours after the attack. >> let's bring in our correspondent. we now know the names of the fim victims. tell us what we have been able to learn so far. >> reporter: we know the names and the ages, as young as 17, and the oldest being 23. we know two of those victims were high school students. one was philstavious dowdell, and he was on the track team, planning to attend jacksonville university, and he's of course, one of those who died. we haven't gotten more details from authorities about what specifically happened that evening, but nbc news has spoken to some of the witnesses, of course, friends and family members, of those victims. here's part of a conversation that my colleague priscilla
12:03 pm
thompson, had with a friend of one of those victims that died. >> it's hard. me and him were very, very close. >> what is it like to think about graduating without best friend there with you? >> it's difficult. it's definitely something hard to, you know, deal with, but i just -- you know, got to do it. do it for him and do it for god. >> what do you think you'll miss most? >> probably -- probably his smile, his laugh. just him being around. >> reporter: we also know that 28 others were injured during that shooting. some critically injured, and many of them were, of course, teenagers being that this was the party of a 16-year-old. >> yeah, of course, and where does the search stand for the gunman right now? >> reporter: so kate, we have been waiting for new details from local authorities.
12:04 pm
they spoke sunday evening. that last update indicated that they were still trying to account for everyone that was present at that venue during the celebration, but they did not disclose any possible motive or other information of the person responsible for this. now nbc news did speak to the deejay of the event who was present during the incident who said that it was very dark and because of the darkness, it was difficult to see who could have been responsible. he said he heard the gunshots and many dove to the ground and tried to help, and it would be difficult for witnesses to give any information because it was dark inside that venue. meanwhile, we do know that state and federal authorities are working with local police to continue with this investigation. >> all right. thank you. well, time is running out in the search for three missing american sailors. u.s. and mexican authorities are fanned out in a massive search
12:05 pm
area in the water near mexico. it has been 13 days since carrie and frank o'brien and william gross were last seen. between the three of them, they have nearly 100 years of boating experience. nbc news correspondent dana griffin joins us now on this. tell us where those search efforts stand right now. >> reporter: the u.s. coast guard says they have no new updates on today's search. they have been focused on 2,500 square miles, and it's been days since husband and wife frank and carrie o'brien and their friend william gross set sail off the coast of mazatlan. it should have taken three days, but the trio hasn't been heard from since tuesday, april 4th. the pings show the boat calling into cabo san lucas. they planned to stop in for supplies, but the coast guard says there's no record of them arriving. now the group was traveling on the o'briens' v vessel
12:06 pm
called "oceanbound," and they do not believe they had enough food or fuel on board which is whyhy they are aggressively pursuing this searcrch and rescueue. the families of those lost sailors are hopeful that their experience at sea will help them make a safe return home, and as you mentioned, the three have a combined 100 years of sailing experience. the o'briens are even licensed coast guard captains. gross' daughter spoke with nbc san diego and shared the last message she received from her dad. listen. >> the last message i got from my dad was, we have a 9:30 a.m. departure today on tuesday, april 4th. we communicate constantly with family and friends. we have a facebook group that we post to. we check in. if our sailing plan changes, we let people know. i am just wanting my dad to -- my dad and the o'briens to roll back in and be, like, what's the big deal, guys? >> and we definitely hope that is the case. while the friends did set sail
12:07 pm
from what's consider a do not travel zone, the coast guard says they are strictly focusing on search and rescue. so it's unclear if foul play may be involved, but the coast guard tells us that they may have also encountered winds over 30 naughts and 20-foot waves, but the family is hopeful that they are experienced, and they are going to make a way back to them. savannah? >> two licensed coast guard captains on board. that's what you would hope for, absolutely even though it's been awhile. dana griffin, thank you. the fate of the widely used abortion pill is in the hands of the supreme court this week. the high court placed a temporary hold on a texas ruling that would prevent patients from receiving the bill by mail. that means for right now, the pill is still available, but the hold put in place by the supreme court ends at midnight on wednesday. yamiche alcindor joins me now. there are a bunch of different scenarios that could play out.
12:08 pm
what are we watching for this week? >> as you said, the really important thing to underscore here is this is still available in the 37 states that legally allow some form of medication abortion. now supreme court justice sam ewe alito issued an order that upholds that status quo through thursday to grant the emergency request given that timeline experts believe the court is likely to act before them then. they could lift that and curtail access to the pill. that could result in the pill not being available by mail, and patients needing to obtain the pill in person and before seven weeks of pregnancy. now justice alito instructed the group's challenging the approval of the drug to file by tuesday at noon, kate. >> that's the next legal step. i want to ask about the vice president, kamala harris. she seems to have really taken on the issue of abortion rights. what has the vice president been
12:09 pm
up to? >> it's a key question because there's the legal part of this, and the politics part of this. i along with my colleagues have a story out that illustrates that the white house is combatting these gop efforts to curb abortion access with the vice president kamala harris as the face of that battle. take a listen to her this weekend at a women's march in los angeles. >> when you attack the rights of women in america, you are attacking america. we are strong when we know the vast majority of us have so much more in common than what separates us. >> so there you really hear the passion in her voice, and vice president kamala harris, she's already held scores of abortion events since roe v. wade was overturned and now harris is expected to hold at least one abortion event a week, and she's hoping those efforts will help preserve abortion access as well as galvanize voters going into 2024, and improve her and president biden's approval ratings. we should also know that
12:10 pm
democratic strategists say that no other senior biden administration official is as credible as vice president harris when i comes to this issue because she understands it on a visceral level, they tell me, as both a woman and a former prosecutor who handled sexual violence cases. we can imagine we'll see a lot more of her talking about this. we're told she's going to be holding at least one abortion event a week. we're told she's also going to be just convening local leaders and state leaders, but this is really an issue where vice president harris is trying to dig in on, and has been digging in on, so definitely a place to watch as the politics and the legal issues here play out. kate? >> it'll be interesting to see what republican candidates do in the 2024 race on this issue as well. thank you so much. appreciate it. apple is getting deeper into the banking business, and big changes are coming to mcdonald's hamburgers. >> i'm hungry now. morgan brennan joins us. i'm headed to the airport. >> there you go then.
12:11 pm
apple is expanlding into the financial services space with the high yield savings account. it comes with 4.15% annual rate, and requires no minimum deposit or a balance. users can manage their accounts in the apple wallet account. the bud light partnership with trans influencer dylan mulvaney, mr. whitworth said he never intended to divide people. he wants people to come together. this is after the ad campaign featuring mulvaney. mcdonald's is making upgrades to its burger menu. the fast food chain is introducing new buns and new way of cooking the patties and burgers will be grilled with onions which the company says adds more flavor. the changes have been made in international stores and they've started rolling out on the west coast. it sounds like you're going to get the old-school mcdonald's
12:12 pm
big mac if you buy that later. >> if you go to new york. yeah. we heard big mac is changing their special sauce too. >> it's perfect. >> well, i guess we're going to have to buy them and do some taste testing. >> we'll see. >> see what we're after. >> morgan, thank you. coming up, a missouri community demanding justice after a 16-year-old is shot. after a 16-year-old is shot. what his family is now when you have chroronic kikidney disease. there e are placeses yoyou'd like t to be. when you have chroronic kikidney disease. like here.e. and here.. and herere. not soso much herere. ifif you've bebeen diagnosed wh chronic kikidney diseaease fafarxiga reduduces the rirk of kididney failurure which h can lead t to dialysi. farxrxiga can cause seriouous e effects inincluding dedehydra, urinarary tract oror genl yeast infefections farxrxiga can cause seriouous e effects inincluding dedehydra, in w women and m men, and d low blood d sugar. farxrxiga can cause seriouous e effects inincluding dedehydra, ketoacididosis is a a serious s side eft thatat may lead d to dea. a rarere life-threreateng bacterial l infectionn
