♪ right now at 11:00 breaking in the east bay shots fired in a carjacking suspect is dead. nine days after the high- profile killing of a tech executive a major break in the case. >> what the people of san francisco has asked for time and time again as it relates to crime is accountability. >> what we are learning about the connection between the accused killer and the victim. we begin though with breaking news, that deadly scene in newark. please confirming a carjacking

led to an officer involved shooting and one person is dead. a second in custody. >> nbc bay area news's stephanie magallon joins us live. >> reporter: this community is still taped off and we are learning more information as the night goes on but we do know two suspects were involved and one of them died right here at the scene near sutter boulevard. newark police say around 3:20 this afternoon they were alerted by their community safety cameras that i carjacked vehicle came into the city on mallory avenue. officers found the car on sutter boulevard and conducted what they called a high risk stop. police say the officer involved shooting occurred then. one suspect did not survive and the second was taken to a hospital and has been released and is now in custody. what is not clear is if the second suspect was shot in of the suspects fired at police. investigators tell us several officers were involved.

lee is in jail. nbc bay areas jia vang and life. what's ahead. >> reporter: tonight's announcement was limited in terms of information that also tonight friends essay it was welcome news because they think someone now might be held accountable. more than one week since this exclusive surveillance video obtained by the daily mail captured a mortally wounded bob lee stumbling for help san francisco police have made an arrest. police say this man and lee knew each other. the friend jake shields is shocked. >> [ indiscernible ]

>> reporter: shields is on the phone with us from las vegas. he was a friend and learned through text what police found out. >> we serve several search warrants and arrest warrants in san francisco and emeryville california. mr. momeni was taken into custody without incident. >> reporter: police served to search warrants. they won't say yet what happened between lee and momeni that fateful night. according to mission local the pair were driving together when a confrontation erupted and he was stabbed. the crime scene someone told nbc bay area news they saw a police recover a five to 6 inch knife just feet away before where they marked the trail of blood on main street. district attorney brooke jenkins is charging momeni with murder with an enhancement alleging it was committed with a knife.

>> my job is to make sure that nothing with respect to that investigation is compromised. >> we have other homicides that we work just as hard on. i understand and appreciate the interest in this case. that is not lost on any of us, but let's not forget that we have lost other lives in this city and there's work to be done on those cases as well. >> reporter: for his friend, it's surreal that he's gone. >> catching the guy does not make things better but it gives you a little relief. >> reporter: and to be clear sf pd said this case is not closed but they do believe they have their single suspect. >> what is going to happen next to momeni? >> reporter: what happens next is he will be arraigned tomorrow morning and it is likely that he will remain in custody and then he could face up to 26 years in prison if convicted. back to you. news conference announcing

today's arrest, the mayor, the police chief and the d.a. really presented a unified front. lee's death made international headlines and it really reignited the issue of crime in san francisco and whether it's getting worse or if the city has an image problem. adding fuel to that fire twitter owner elon musk posted a tweet the day after lee was killed. today d.a. brooke jenkins called him out by name. >> since waking up to elon musk's suite, our office has told people not to make assumptions about this case. we knew nothing about the facts of this case after it happened. none of us did and so my urging through twitter, through the news was to really press upon not just the media but the residents of san francisco and everyone else not to draw conclusions about what happened in this case and actually to wait and to be patient and let this investigation play out we

can come back with facts and so now as you have heard we do have some facts that we can offer which is that the killer was a known person to mr. lee. >> so, who is that suspected killer nemo momeni? what we know is that like bob leo he is also a berry area tech worker. the correspondent has more. >> i heard this banging and i don't know what it was. it sounded like something hitting metal. >> reporter: this paper describes sounds she heard as police descended on the building she lives early this morning as they arrested her neighbor, nema momeni. i'm absolutely shocked. this man says nema momeni gave

him a tour of his place when he moved into his new east bay office last month. >> very typical san francisco technology office. there's lots of technology equipment and wiring. a very fancy gourmet food set up in the kitchen. fancy, upscale stereo system. >> reporter: the 38-year-old founded a company called expand its. according to the company's website a client centric i.t. outsourcing firm. >> transfer if i was an i.t. professional and did cyber security and server work. he handed us a stack of his cards when we first met and told us if we ever need help to give him a call. the mattress and worked with him a few years back. the startup company he worked for at the time higher the specialist to set up their network. they said he never saw any red flags. >> every interaction i had with him was always very cordial and

very accommodated. matched with a smile on his face. never anything weird or any signs of any anger or anything of that nature. >> reporter: why place -- why police say the suspect and the victim knew each other the nature of the relationship is still unknown. adding to the mystery neighbor say a woman was knocking on doors in the building at 2:30 in the morning on april 3rd just one night before the murder. according to a facebook post of the woman was roaming around the hallways and screaming. the buildings camera capture the young dark-haired woman strange behavior. >> and they looked at security footage and there was a woman wandering around calling nema momeni's name and knocking on the wrong door to get entrance into his space. >> reporter: jody hernandez, nbc bay area news.

>> we will follow this story closely. we will post all the updates in one place. our website, nbcbayarea.com, click probably at the top of our home page. more shock and outrage regarding racist text messages exchanged by police officers in that city and tonight for the first time we are hearing it from their boss. the fbi and contra costa d.a. have been investigating officers since 2022. they have included racist text 17 officers send each other over several years. they included many racist comments over african-americans and excitement to use rubber bullets during an arrest. this statement was released. "i condemn and apologize for the behavior of the officers and promised to hold them accountable." he then thanked the dea and fbi for their investigation into the officers. is also worth noting that the

d.a. released a redacted report about those texts. police investigating another deadly shooting on a bay area freeway. this time, 580 in oakland. security footage shows the moment a truck came speeding off 580 and onto lakeshore avenue before midnight. the truck crashed into a light pole. legal from that scene shows that truck riddled with bullets . the driver of the truck died at the scene. the chp tells us it started out as a shoot out on the freeway before the lakeshore exit so it's not clear if the driver was killed in that shooting or if they died as a result of the crash. frustrated oakland earth say they are concerned with the dramatic uptake in freeway shootings. >> it's been every couple of months i have heard of another one happening. people are bad right now. things are bad. >> it could happen to anyone on

the freeway and it's a random shooting and it's a terrible thing. with everything, the robberies, the shootings. >> it does feel like a lot. the shooting came days after another deadly shooting on 880 south bound went on saturday five-year-old -- was shot and killed while riding in the back seat of her family's car near fremont. in the wake of so many freeway shootings we have heard continued calls for more cameras to be installed along freeways. last year governor newsom in introduced a pilot program to put up to 200 cameras including alameda and contra costa counties. our investigative unit checked with caltrans to see where things stand. caltrans tells us that the cameras were purchased last fall and cruise installed them in the winter. so far they've installed about half the cameras but they are not working yet. caltrans says after the cameras are installed they will start employing them in gradual phases.

even firefighters need to call for help sometimes. this firetruck fell into a sinkhole in san diego county. it was heading back to the station when the road under its tires just gave way. the whole was deep enough that the truck was not able to drive out on its own and another

truck had to pull it out. fortunately no one was hurt. a call for senator dianne feinstein's resignation. chuck schumer says he will honor her wishes and temporarily replaced her on a key committee. dianne feinstein who was 89 has missed a majority of the votes. she has been absent since capitol hill since february and is still recovering from the shingles. yesterday followed democrat publicly called for feinstein to resign her office. her office responded by saying that she plans to return as soon as her doctor gives her the okay and that she asked schumer to temporarily appoint another senator to the judiciary committee until then. who the replacement will be still is not clear. concerns about fentanyl grows across the bay area. community leaders are taking action. a discussion in belmont aimed at informing parents about the prevalence of fentanyl in the community led by belmont police resource officer.

the goal is to educate families and save lives. one topic of importance was recognizing fake medication. >> these pills are being marketed, traded, handed out. a kid says i will pop a xanax bar. this is the xanax bar they think they are taking, but in reality it very well may not be a xanax bar. it may contain fentanyl. >> among the other topics how kids are finding the drug and what parents should do if they find fentanyl in the home. hayward man accused of wanting to shoot up the state capitol is in jail tonight. police later tracked the man's truck down and followed it to roseville some 20 miles away where he was arrested and booked into a jail. suspect, 30-year-old jackson pity from hayward. they say he is connected to a series of shootings that started wednesday night in roseville.

he allegedly fired a gun at several businesses including a kaiser permanente facility. luckily, no one was hurt. a high school baseball team in south city is now without a home because yesterday the district close the baseball field at el camino high. this came after what happened on saturday. once the center of your screen. you see a player suddenly slamming unfortunately into a pole. then he hits the ground. his injuries are major. one parent telling us he suffered broken bones, a concussion and that he will need surgery. so the district stepped in and relocated all of caminos home games for the rest of the season which includes tonight's game at pacifica. parents and players say the problem has been known for years. >> we haven't had upgrade ins probably 60 years. my son, when he was a freshman, he ran into the pole. >> my dad was here and he said it's been the same. no one has ever done anything

to change it. >> some of the parents and community members spoke out at the school board meeting tonight but nothing was decided. earlier today the district issued a statement saying the decision was "out of a abundance of caution" that all games would be relocated until they can assess the situation. it added the field still could be used for practice. thursday night about the time we start taking about what the weather will be like this weekend. we call it friday adjacent around here. >> the good news is the weather will be trending warmer and probably less windy as we head towards the weekend. right now the wind is still a big part of this dory -- of the story. as we show you the microclimate weather forecast. sustained winds are still at 26 miles per hour and we have had gus close to 40 so the wind continues around the peninsula. wind speeds will come down as we head toward's morning. not much wind in dublin but it is chilly at 47 degrees and

into san jose, 51 degrees with northwind at about eight miles per hour. still breezy conditions expected on the coast during the day and those wind speeds will pick back up. a little less when as we get into the weekend so inland areas will have a brief chance of getting close to 70 degrees and early next week slight chance of rain. most of that now looks like it will be in the north. a closer look at that in a moment. on the topic of wind, notice of the speeds come down for the morning and for the afternoon they will fire up once again around san francisco and the coast. that's one reason why we won't see much change temperature wise. upper 52 more -- upper 50s to 60s. valleys, low 40s to start. mid-60s around san jose, in fact upper 60s in reach tomorrow for the santa clara valley. chilly around half moon bay and chile at mid-60s around a spay. saturday san jose southward making a run close to 70.

sunday temperatures come down for inland areas as we begin to see clouds a spill in. monday, north of san francisco a chance of showers. one friend we noticed in the forecast monday into tuesday is how more shower chances are trending further north so we will certainly be cooler monday and tuesday, but the best rain chances may likely stay north of san francisco for tuesday. we will go from a weekend of 60s and low 70s across the valleys to breezy and cooler in monday and tuesday with a few showers and highs in the 50s by tuesday, but before we get there a little bit of warm-up. a little three-day taste of spring. >> it's better than nothing at this point. up next, fighting devastating wildfires from space. the tools nasa plans to use to help crews on the ground in this year's fight. >> and now jimmy.

over so the warriors have to turn their attention to the playoffs and the first stop is sacramento kings. at least they don't have to go very far. the kings surprise many in finishing as the third seed in the western conference but the last time they reached the playoffs was back in 2006. the warriors were back at practice sharpening their skills. if they were nervous it didn't seem to show. after all during the season the warriors beat the kings three out of four games. the team is not overconfident but the coach says they have bigger goals in mind. >> at this stage after a decade at this for the core guys it's about having an opportunity to win another title and we've given ourselves that chance and the circumstances are different every year. and there is no need for any motivation this year. from -- in terms of seeking a reason to be motivated.
