getaway car. what the people of san francisco have asked for time and time again as relates to crime in our city has been accountability. >> a major break in the high profile killing of tech executive bob lee. we have team coverage tonight. what we're learning about the man in jail and his connection to lee. good evening. the news at 6:00 starts right now. thanks for joining us. i'm jessica aguirre. >> i'm garvin thomas. it is a big break in the biggest of cases. ten days after tech executive bob lee was stabbed to death on a san francisco street police announced an arrest today. investigators say it was not a random attack. the man accused of the murder knew the victim. nbc bay area's sergio quintana is live at police headquarters where the mayor, district attorney, and police chief all got together to make this announcement. >> reporter: the main point was

to lay out the basics in the investigation that led to the arrest but all three took the opportunity to push back against some people in the community that drew early conclusions about the case as it relates to overall crime in the city. san francisco police chief bill scott and district attorney brooke jenkins say the investigation is still in progress so they only released the most basic information in this case. >> our homicide investigators developed information that identified the suspect as 38-year-old nima momeni of emeryville, california. >> the specific charges we are filing today include murder, in violation of penal code section 187, as well as a special allegation also known as an enhancement alleging that this murder was committed with a knife. >> reporter: the arrest comes ten days after tech executive bob lee was stabbed and seemingly struggled to find help early in the morning in downtown

san francisco. this security camera video shows lee inside the port side condominiums moments after he had been stabbed. he managed to call 911 and was rushed to the hospital but later died. police chief bill scott says bob lee and nima momeni knew each other but he would not share details about how or when they met up before the fatal stabbing. according to mission local momeni and lee had been driving together in downtown san francisco when some kind of confrontation ended with the stabbing. someone who works near the crime scene described to nbc bay area news seeing san francisco police recover a 5 to 6-inch knife from a caltrans lot feet away from where police marked the beginning of a trail of blood on the sidewalk on main street. a social media post described san francisco as a city full of violence including one tweet by elon musk that read in part, violent crime in sf is horrific and even if attackers are caught they are often released immediately.

is the city taking stronger action to incarcerate repeat violent offenders? he tagged da brooke jenkins. da jenkins and mayor london breed responded to some of that attention. >> since this incident happened since waking up to elon musk's tweet my office has worked hard to tell people not to make assumptions about this case. >> what the people of san francisco have asked for time and time again as it relates to crime in our city has been accountability. that is what you see with the two leaders joining us here today. >> reporter: during today's news conference police chief bill scott said the police actually served two search warrants in san francisco and momeni was taken into custody at his home in emeryville. the chief would not say what the locations were and what they may have collected from those two sites. momeni will be arraigned tomorrow morning at san francisco superior court at the hall of justice. live at san francisco police headquarters, sergio quintana, nbc bay area news.

>> our investigative unit has been looking into nima momeni's past all day long and uncovered in 2011 he was charged with misdemeanors in alameda county for carrying a switch blade and driving with a suspended license. the license was suspended because of a dui. momeni pleaded no contest. the suspended license charge and switch blade charge were tossed out as a result of the plea and he was sentenced to ten days in jail and three years' probation. we are learning more about the suspected killer, his alleged victim also, like his alleged victim he was a bay area tech worker. nbc bay area's jodi hernandez has been talking to people who know momeni and joins us from emeryville. >> reporter: nima momeni's jeep cherokee is still parked out in front of the building where he lived. his boat is in the parking lot. this morning police came and took him away into custody and

folks can't believe the allegations. >> i heard this bang, bang, bang. i don't know what it was. it sounds like something hitting metal. >> reporter: she describes the sounds she heard as police descended on the building where she lives early this morning as they arrested her neighbor nima momeni. >> very nice guy, thoroughly professional, great neighbor. absolutely shocking that he is accused of this crime. >> public relations specialist sam singer has an office space next door to momeni's unit and says momeni gave him a tour when singer moved into his new east bay office last month. >> very typical san francisco technology office. there is a big pool table in the middle. lots of technology equipment, wiring, a very fancy gourmet food in the kitchen. fancy, upscale stereo systems. >> momeni left business cards behind. the 38-year-old founded a

company called expand it. according to the company website a client centric i.t. out sourcing firm. >> nima is an i.t. professional. he handed us a stack of cards when we first met and said if you ever need i.t. help give us a call. >> very jovial, down to earth kind of person. >> reporter: this man worked with momeni a few years back. the start up company he worked for at the time hired the i.t. specialist to set up their network. he says he never saw any red flags. >> every interaction i had with him, always very cordial, very accommodative, very much with a smile on his face. never anything untoward or any signs of anger. >> reporter: while police say nima momeni and alleged victim tech executive bob lee knew each other the nature of their

relationship is unknown. adding to the mystery neighbors say a woman was knocking on doors in the building at 2:30 in the morning on april 3rd. just one night before the murder. according to the facebook post the woman was roaming the hallways and screaming nima. the cameras captured the dark haired woman's strange behavior. >> they looked at security footage and there was a woman wandering around calling nima's name and knocking on the wrong door to get entrance to his space. >> reporter: of course we don't know if there is any connection to the woman's strange behavior and the murder that took place a day later. neighbors are anxiously waiting for answers. live in emeryville, jodi narngsds nbc bay area news. >> curious indeed. thank you very much. >> we all should and must do

better about not contributing to the spread of such misinformation. without having actual facts to underlie the statements that we make. victims deserve that and the residents of san francisco deserve that. >> coming up at 7:00 i'll talk to the da live and ask her about why and how she called out elon musk specifically and what her office plans to do about this case in the coming weeks and what we can expect and when you can expect to find out more details about a motive. we have new video of a police chase that ends with a team of bank robbers crashing their getaway car. this is the aftermath of the crash. it started this afternoon when police say four men held up a bank with a gun in antioch and then moved on to steal from another bank in brentwood. the robbers hopped in the getaway car and police started shooting at the car then followed the car all the way back to antioch where the robbers crashed the car and started to run. police were able to catch them

and arrest them. in the east bay police are investigating another deadly shooting this time on 580 in oakland overnight. security footage from a nearby gas station captured the moment the green pickup came speeding off 580 on to lakeshore avenue and the off ramp and you see it there crashed into a light pole before midnight. the mangled truck riddled with bullets from a shooting the chp says started on the freeway. both cars involved ended up getting off the same exit. the driver of the truck died at the scene not sure if he died from the bullet holes or from the bullets or from the crash. however, frustrated oaklanders say they are concerned with the rising number of freeway shootings. >> it has been every couple months i heard of another one happening. people are bad right now. i mean, things are bad. >> it could happen to anybody on the freeway. it is just the random shooting

and terrible thing with everything, the robbery, shooting. >> yes. overnight shooting is the latest in the series of deadly freeway shootings. on saturday a 5-year-old was shot and killed while riding in the back seat of a family car on 880 near fremont. on the peninsula the el camino baseball field has been closed for games. this after a player from an opposing team was hurt while trying to catch the ball. now that has some families raising questions about the safety of the field. nbc bay area explains. >> it was devastating to see app really upsetting. >> reporter: david and noelle walker have a son who plays baseball for el camino high school. on saturday the game was going well until one play. their team hit a ball to center field and a visiting player ran after it. >> as the other team's outfielder was trying to track the ball he was looking up in

the sky to track the fly ball. he hit one of the poles in the center field. the poles are on the phones. his head hit the pole. >> reporter: according to the south san francisco unified school district aid was administered to the injured player who was taken to the hospital. in a statement they said after learning of the situation, the superintendent deployed facility staff to examine the field, gather additional information from staff, and report back on how to improve the safety of student athletes. the district's facilities director has also been tasked with identifying and mitigating any other issues associated with the field. the field has been closed and the remainder of the home games will be relocated until the assessment is complete. >> i have mixed emotions about home games being canceled. the positive from it is we're getting finally what the kids deserve which is a safer environment for them to play. safer environment for the teams coming here to play. and to make sure nothing like

what happened this past saturday doesn't happen again. >> my feeling is while i understand the message is we don't want you playing on an unsafe field my opinion is go above and beyond for the kids and do something. take some action. >> reporter: for now home games here are out and these parents say upgrades at the baseball field were long overdue. >> make the necessary adjustments to the field. put some padding on the poles. why don't you go put a warning track in? you don't just condemn the field and say you can't play here anymore. >> for a lot of these boys sitting down seven hours a day in a classroom is grueling. some of the things they look forward to is socializing, playing together as a team on a baseball field, you know, they have a good time. and connect. it is devastating. here we go. amazon getting into the crowded ai game. the new service it is unveiling

warrior fans, it is time to get decked. get your gear out. blue and gold day. fans celebrating the reigning champs across the bay area before the year's playoff run. san francisco and oakland raised warriors flags earlier today and the team even handed out surprise gifts in the civic center to early comers. fans wore warriors gear to mark the ninth postseason appearance in the last 11 years. the team will be m sacramento on saturday to kick off the first round of the nba playoffs. the flag raising at city hall, mayor breed told an enthusiastic crowd not to under estimate the warriors by any means. last year when they counted out the warriors guess what the warriors did? they brought home a championship! so they can keep counting us out. frmth okay. game two is on monday. game three and four on wednesday and friday. >> amazon is the latest company

getting into the ai game. the new service is called bed rock, similar to the chat gpt program released in november. you type in a prompt and the ai generates a text answer. you'll be able to access bed rock through amazon's web service website meaning use it for tasks like answering questions, content creation, business development. bed rock is only open for a limited preview so people can add it to their list to try it. today senator chuck schumer announced he is drafting a plan to regulate ai. it would require an independent review before product is released to the public. it is to address issues of national security and education. senator schumer's announcement comes two days after china released a plan to regulate ai companies. he called it a wake up call to the nation. the plan needs approval from

congress and the white house before it can be implemented. after a wet winter firefighters are focusing attention on the upcoming fire season and preparing to use space age technology to fight the flames. here in silicon valley right now and in tonight's climate in crisis scott budman visited nasa to show us how it works. >> reporter: after several seasons of deadly wild fires, nasa wants to put high tech eyes in the sky to better track the way fires move. >> especially with the satellites that measure the whole planet and can observe the whole planet over long periods of time some of the folks here are using the sub orbital aspects to study more closely and with better spatial resolution. >> reporter: the sub orbital assets include these unmanned planes used to carry firefighting gear to dangerous areas and these drones capable of moving cameras and weather

because of all the rain. rob is here to give us an update on where the drought has gone. >> the drought monitor updates each week continue to improve for california. we had one of the wettest winters and marches now getting into april showers at times. and the impact continues to be shown here and the drought monitor will show you statewide how most has come off. let's take you on a drought monitor progression. right now no part of the bay area is seeing drought monitor conditions. if you rewind back to a year ago you see most of the bay area was in the extreme or severe category even in fact going back to the beginning of this year. that is a significant change. you can see the green hills around the bay area and by the way in the seven day forecast monday and tuesday there is a chance you could see a few more spring showers headed our way. like that now. we have clear skies, 61 degrees in san jose. northwest wind 15 miles per hour. 60 in dublin.

a little cooler into san rafael and san francisco. upper 50s around san rafael. san francisco 56 degrees. short term. seeing breezy conditions. wind speeds 10 to 20 miles per hour. as we head toward tomorrow morning wind sheltered valleys could get chilly. upper 30s and low 40s around the north bay valleys and warming nicely around lunch time. mid to upper 50s bay side. by 3:00 upper 60s san jose with sunny skies and low to mid 60s from san francisco to oakland. as we move into the weekend 70s. the tri valley, north bay close to 70 degrees. mid 50s around san francisco and oakland. similar temperatures sunday with increasing clouds and then monday cooling down as rain chances drop out of the north bay. most of the bay area about 0.1 inch of rain and locally higher up toward the north bay where the more significant rain

chances are going to be. this system will be cold by monday night into tuesday. if you have travel plans early next week to the sierra we could see a winter weather advisory monday night into tuesday. the weekend looks fine. biggest impact locally. outside of the north bay, probably into early tuesday morning. there is the chance of showers and once that moves out the sky is clear. temperatures are trying to rebound the second half of next week. a little less wind, more warming into the weekend. saturday and sunday looking pretty good. then one more chance of spring showers and then sierra snow showers, the snow pack is not melting anywhere fast given the fact they could see another foot of snow near interstate 80 by tuesday. just keeps going this year. >> gosh. another foot? >> possible near king veil next week. >> thank you. still ahead a glimpse into the near feature. the state of the electric vehicle being unveiled of course in silicon valley.
