to take. tensions are rising between the u.s. and china day after taiwan's president was in southern california, a congressional delegation lands in taiwan. how china is responding. and a new study involving pregnant women transmitting covid to their newborns. an infectious disease specialist provides insight for us. good thursday, everyone. the news at 5:30 starts right now, thanks so much for joining us. i'm janelle wang. they fight about football, about concerts, and now about soccer. the city of santa clara once again locking horns with the 49ers. levi stadium will host games for the upcoming 2026 world cup but the mayor says the 49ers are with holding key information for this mega event. here is ian cull.
5:31 pm
>> reporter: there was jubilation at being selected for a site. the planning is in full swing. the 49ers run the city owned stadium even for non-nfl events. >> we're really lucky to be able to host world cup 2026. >> reporter: but santa clara mayor lisa gillmor says the city is still waiting on crucial documents about what they'll need to provide. it's still three years away, but the mayor says it takes a lot of time to prepare for logistics with security and other public services. super bowl 50, for example, took three years to plan and a world cup is likely to be even bigger. >> this time by super bowl 50 we had full documents, everything was negotiated. we knew what our responsibilities were. >> reporter: she adds santa clara county has the smallest city government among the world cup host sites.
5:32 pm
>> we could have five to seven games. >> reporter: it's the latest chapter between the mayor and the 49ers. the world cup bay area host committee leads up to the mega event working with the 49ers and in a statement said we are committed to transparency and provided city staff with materials regarding the bid. we look forward to continuing to work with city staff on the remaining documents to ensure that proprietary information is protected. the 49ers are also reportedly in the running to host the super bowl in 2026, months before the world cup. the police chief submitted a letter saying his department needs time to prepare because it would strain their resources and require assistance from other outside agencies, adding the lack of communication is unacceptable. the mayor proposed legal action to subpoena the fifa documents but the council voted against it this week. instead deciding to wait until the new city manager takes over so they can discuss it with the

manufacturing. janelle, new information about covid. while it's rare, covid infections can be transmitted from a mother to her baby causing brain injuries to a newborn. that's according to a study from the university of miami. researchers studied two mothers who contracted covid in the second trimester. their babies tested negative for the virus at birth but had antibodies in their bloodstream. both experienced seizures, small head sizes and developmental delays. one died at 13 months old. >> in the brain autopsy slide of the infant who passed away, there was covid virus in the brain which raises the possibility that the sars covid 2 infection of the brain directly could have contributed to this ongoing brain injury. >> the authors do stress these were rare occurrences. for more information let's bring

in dr. peter chin hong. how concerned should pregnant women be with all said that it's very rare coming out of the university of miami, that report? >> i'll give more context. people cannot be panicked. there are several cacaveats. this was before vaccines were widely available. encourage pregnant people and their loved ones to make sure they get vaccinated. anything that decreases the chance the virus can get into the bloodstream of the mom or the pregnant person can definitely reduce the chances that it will get into the bloodstream of the baby through the placenta and that's what we're talking about. >> it is concerning to hear anything about this. in this rare case that the university studied where the baby died, the study shows the baby had covid in the brain. what can we learn from that
5:37 pm
moving forward? >> i think it gives us a lot of insight. we hear about brain fog, about neurological defects from covid. it really gives a proof of concept that covid can get into the brain. it can damage systems and may give us targets for targeting long covid and some of the chronic conditions. >> i know easter is this sunday. a lot of families will be gathering. it seems that more people are getting -- there's a slight uptick. do you see that in the community, and any guidance more than three years into this now? >> things are still looking okay at the hospital. probably at the lowest levels but still not zero. people mo what they should now. now that easter is here if anyone is having symptoms

particularly if you're older than 65, immunocompromised, get paxlovid. that's been way underused and can be the difference between life and death or life and seriously ill. >> i've kind of lost track of my own covid vaccination card. what's the general rule of thumb in how often we should get vaccinated or get the boosters? >> i think the bottom line is most people don't have to worry until the fall campaign. there is some movement to give an option to those over 65. a could rather than a should option to get one four months after the last booster. most of the people dying or doing poorly have not gotten a single booster, not those who have gotten a booster than not the second. >> excellent perspective. dr. peter chin-hong, thank you
5:39 pm
for your time. >> thank you, raj. a bay area lawmaker is getting behind efforts to unionize a starbucks in the south bay. congressman ro khanna met with workers in sunnyvale. the congressman has been critical of labor practices of the company after a report accused it of withholding pay from workers trying to unionize. the meeting comes two weeks after one tried to form a union. the artemis crew is gearing up for a trip to the moon. the crew members were announced. reid weisman was named as the mission commander, victor glover the pilot, jeremy hanson and christina cooke will be specialists. cook is the first woman on a lunar mission. they spoke on the "today" show
