at 6:30. anyone can go, or if they don't want to go to the event itself, they can also watch it on the san francisco police department's facebook page. reporting live in san francisco, i'm sergio quintana, nbc bay area news. >> thank you so much. an early morning trip to check on fishing gear ended in tragedy in contra costa county this weekend. two men went out fishing in indian flow near discovery bay. the coast guard says the inflatable raft they were in popped. one of them was able to swim to shore, but the other one didn't make it. first responders searched for hours for efrin cruz, man in his 30s. the rescue effort has now become a recovery effort to find his body. the coast guard says the men did not have life jackets with them at the time. one person is dead after a head-on crash in contra costa county. it happened this morning about 9:00 on balfour road near american avenue in brentwood. investigators say the driver of that silver nissan altima was

driving eastbound and hit a minivan head-on after trying to pass the other car. the driver of the altima died at the scene. the driver of the minivan was taken to the hospital but somehow was not hurt. a witness describes what happened moments before the deadly crash. >> the silver nissan was going eastbound behind me, at a high rate of speed, tried to pass me, hit me, swerved into the other lane and hit the toyota van head-on. >> i'm so sorry for the poor man. i'm sorry for his family. it's traumatizing to see something like this. it really is. >> police are still invhether drugs or alcohol were a factor in this deadly collision. sideshow action caught on camera from high above in fairfield. check this out. the police department released this video of drivers racing and spinning in circles. this was on friday night. two cars ended up being towed. one person was arrested. police say they want other pol reckless drivers to know there is zero tolerance for

this kind of activity in fairfield. a flight to hawaii out of san francisco only got a third of the way there before pilots had to turn around. united flight 694 from sfo to kona returned to the airport this afternoon buzz of a mechanical issue. united says the plane landed safely. passengers are being put on a new plane, got a new crew. it's not clear exactly what that mechanical issue was. a brushfire forced freeway closures and mandatory evacuations in southern california today. this is what it look likes tonight in eagle rock. that's about ten miles northeast of downtown l.a. firefighters are battling a grass fire that's burned about 25 acres. a part of the 134 and 2 freeways are closed, causing major traffic delays. we've just learned that evacuation orders have been lifted for homes in parts of glendale. the fire started about 4:00 this afternoon. this is a tweet from one of our employees. he was watching the dodgers/yankees game. you can see a cloud of smoke

>> take a shot from the north. >> reporter: officers descended in full s.w.a.t. gear, locking down this apartment building and a nearby school for hours. deputy reynosa was rushed to the hospital. >> he fortunately was wearing a vest. the vest saved his life, but the bullet did deflect into his shoulder. >> reporter: the only thing, there was no wound. there was no shooter. it turns out the deputy made the whole thing up. >> the reported sniper assault was fabricated by our deputy. >> reporter: in an unprecedented late night news conference, the los angeles county sheriff's department said reynosa eventually confessed. the two bullet holes in his uniform? >> he had caused the holes in his uniform shirt by cutting it with a knife. there was no sniper, no shots fired, completely fabricated. >> reporter: the department disgust captured in this

facebook post. embarrassed, furious, unbelievable. tonight the 21-year-old rookie still in training is out of a job and under investigation as his former colleagues want to know why he launched the lie that brought a city street to a stand still. in dayton, ohio this morning, kanye west hosted a sunday service in honor of the nine people killed there earlier this month in a mass shooting. the service took place at river scape metro park. later in the day, comedian dave chappelle hosted a block party for the survivors of the shooting. jon stewart and stevie wonder were part of that event. thousands of people turned out. now to international news at n france today. iran's foreign minister made a surprise visit to the talks. that foreign minister is personally under u.s. sanctions. hallie jackson has more on the drama. >> reporter: a stunning summit

twist tonight with the iranian foreign minister landing last-minute for talks nearby with the french, but not the u.s. >> no comment. >> reporter: it's a risky move by the french president, hoping to show progress on his efforts to ratchet down tensions in the middle east. some administration officials were furious at the french decision to invite the iranians without more notice, according to multiple sources. the foreign minister was personally sanctioned by the u.s. recently, tweeting today the road ahead is difficult but worth trying a year after the president pulled out of that nuclear deal. does the president welcome minister zarif to be here? >> the president has said before to the extent iran wants to sit down and negotiate, he would not set preconditions to those negotiations. >> reporter: the iranians' visit temporarily overshadowed a g7 team devised on trade including new uk prime minister boris

johnson. president trump initially seeming to soften his stance on the china trade war. >> yeah, for sure. >> do you have second thoughts about escalating the war -- >> i have second thoughts about everything. >> reporter: but hours later, white house whiplash as his aides insisted the remarks were misinterpreted adding the only regret if he had any was not making the tariffs tougher in the first place. allies here do not seem to want to antagonize the president. so when there has been public pushback on topics like that trade war or on north korea's recent missile test, it's been delivered very gently. back to you. it's no secret americans are deeply divided, but a new poll puts the sentiments into numbers. according to the latest nbc news/wall street journal poll, 70% of americans are angry at the political system. 56% feel anxious and uncertain about the economy. just 27% reported feeling confident that their children's generation will be better off than their own generation.

the poll also asked about the defining values. hard work remains very important. however, fewer americans named religion, having children, and patriotism compared to 20 years ago. former u.s. congressman joe walsh is taking on president trump. walsh announced his run for the 2020 republican nomination today. he says president trump is unfit to run the country. walsh previously served as an illinois congressman from 2011 to 2013. he has since worked as a conservative talk radio host. the caribbean is bracing for a possible hurricane. tropical storm dorian is likely to strengthen into a hurricane in the next few days. people in puerto rico are stocking up on emergency equipment, bottled water and other supplies. the national hurricane center says some caribbean islands could get as much as 6 inches of rain. dorian is the fourth tropical storm storm of the hurricane season. we're expecting some rain in the bay area, but not like that. >> humidity. >> it's interesting how quiet the year.

it's the fourth storm of the season. sometimes we're down to the letter l or k. but late august, september, typically the peak of tropical weather. we'll be watching that closely. but how about the view in san francisco. this has been amazing. last four hours an incredible sunset. the glow after sunset was great. now you got some fog. but the top of the transamerica pyramid sticking out above the low clouds. 58 degrees. no worries about heat or probably air quality issues for san francisco and the inner bay. there is going to be an ongoing sea breeze. it's a bit more shallow. inland locations not benefitting from that cooler marine air. it's actually kind of mild outside. 68 degrees after a high of 84 at the airports. and look at walnut creek. still 78 degrees outside. we had a high of 97. and it's places like walnut creek and the tri-valley for tomorrow highlighted in red that is the reason why we do have a spare the air day tomorrow and for inland contra costa, inland alameda and to the tri-valley

for monday, possibly tuesday. stay tuned. we'll see if that holds up for another day. right now winds are still onshore. so the patchy dense low clouds in san francisco, that will get pushed inlandfor the morning. inland temperatures will be starting off in 60s. bayside and coast 50s with nift tif skies. the futurecast shows here, and as we go through the afternoon, nothing but sunshine inland. overall, a very similar day to what we saw today. but a few spots around san jose may try to trend a little hotter. we could see upper 90s south of downtown san jose. upper 80s towards milpitas and fremont. toward concord, spare the air. the hottest temperatures. oakland into hayward into the low 80s. peninsula temperatures still in the 70s to 80s from san mateo down into redwood city and san francisco, downtown close to the 70s. 60s coastside. and for the north bay highs mainly in the 90s your monday.

heat is in the seven-day forecast, you can see the band of clouds coming up out of the south? tropical weather courtesy of what used to be a tropical storm. but notice how the moisture is moving up the california coast. this area of green as we get into tuesday and wednesday, that's going to start to move to the bay area. even though our temperatures are going to come down, humidity will be on the increase. so it may feel extra uncomfortable outside. the futurecast really don't show anything in terms of rainfall chances. most of that will be off towards the sierra. what we have to watch out for is mid level moisture can sometimes lead to instability. the chance of some lightning strikes. well don't need that as we're nearing the peak of fire season, something we'll be watching tuesday and wednesday. a warm start to the week. not so much in san francisco, but it's going to be muggy around the bay area. especially tuesday into wednesday. i really wouldn't put too much into the fact temperatures are coming down. it's going to be more humid outside and back into the 80s inland that will start to feel more comfortable as we head

right now at 11:30, let's recap tonight's top local story. >> a scare at a south bay mall. shoppers heard loud sounds before a jewelry store. someone yelled "gunman." that set off a chain reaction at the great wall with hundreds of panicked people rung out of that mall in milpitas. others ran into storage areas. a variety of stores. we talked to one young woman who

hid in the hollister store pour more than an hour. >> it ended up everyone went on lockdown and everyone was running. it was kind of scary. >> milpitas police are investigating whether the smash and grab robbery is linked to a similar incident in a modesto mall just a few hours earlier. bridging the gap between law enforcement and the lgbtq community. tomorrow will be the first in a series of meetings where the two sides come together and share personal experiences. it's being called a reflection and reconciliation form glide memorial. the meeting marks the 51st anniversary of the compton cafeteria riot. the riots helped inspire the lgbtq movement and their claims of mistreatment by police. >> we live in a time where there is a lot of intersectional issues. so at the same time that some people feel like their rights are easing and that laws affect them less, there are other communities that feel like they're more vulnerable. >> the san francisco police department is organizing the event, but it's being held at glide memorial church tomorrow night. a popular south bay park

remains closed after some mountain lion activity. hundreds of people were turned away from rancho san antonio park west of cupertino today. rangers were at the entrance letting people know a family of mountain lions have been prowling the trails, getting dangerously close to people. these cats don't appear to be afraid of people and that's not good. there is no set date for the park's reopening. >> safety for themselves and the safety of the animals within the park. and again, we appreciate their patience while we work through this process. >> rangers are monitoring mountain lion behavior with several cameras they have there. they recommend checking the park's website to see when it's going to be back open. a broken water pipe helped firefighters make quick work of an early morning fire in east san jose. the fire started before midnight at this liquor store. the fire spread into the attic and broke the pipe. the water from the pipe helps control the flames.

san jose fire department says at least ten businesses in the shopping center were without power this morning, but thankfully, nobody was hurt. declaring a climate emergency. that's going to be one of the topics discussed at this week's board of supervisors meeting in santa clara county. the resolution would demand immediate action to reverse the causes of global warming. right now it's not clear what particular steps would be taken as part of that regulation. the board of supervisors meeting tuesday at 9:30 in the morning. good progress is being made on the mountain fire that's burning in shasta county. at last check, firefighters have the flames about 80% contained. the fire burned 600 acres, though. all evacuation orders and road closures have been lifted. fires continue to sweep across the amazon. the crisis is being watched closely across the world. in fact, california's very own supertanker right there is now down in bolivia fighting the flames. the 747 is named spirit of john muir. it's normally reserved for fires here in california and other western states. the super tanker is the world's

largest aerial firefighting asset. it can fly 600 miles an hour and do more than 19,000 gallons of water or fire retardant at a time. nearly twice the capability of other planes. nbc's kerry sanders is in brazil with more of the firefight. >> reporter: from the air and the ground, tonight the brazilian military with orders to do what they can to stop the vast fires, to stop those clear-cutting the trees, some more than 400 years old. the rain forest destruction this year historic. more than two million square miles, the so-called lungs of planet earth, responsible for 20% of our oxygen. now say scientists at a tipping point. >> the amazon is very important for climate security, for climate stability, to fight the climate crisis we are going through. >> in the last 40 years, an area the size of france destroyed to make way for farmers grazing

cattle, planting soy beans. it was only after protests around the world and the #save the amazon trended online that brazil's president announced the crackdown. but many of brazil's top scientists are skeptical. >> we are not sure whether only sending a few hundred or even a few thousand oranges into the forest, it would be sufficient. >> in bolivia, today, a third day of water drops from the 747 super tanker based in colorado. the crew flew directly from california, but the rain forest is a different type of fire, and they say the air drops are not as effective. >> we're significantly outmatched and undergunned, and just able to hang on with our fingernails to help them. >> we came upon bill from wisconsin, bird watching in the rain forest today. >> my real concern is i'm not

and almost every company in the world. >> this is probably the most important cyber security threat that we have today, because these computers control every single aspect of our critical infrastructure that we depend on every single day. >> reporter: and according to a report by raidion insight, the market is projected to be worse $214 billion next year. this a small version of an air filtration system in the lab the team is working with right now. >> you don't want the dirty air to come out ever. and this computer will allow that to happen. >> reporter: they hack devices inside the fan's controller, not only forcing the dirty air in the wrong direction, but ultimately shutting it down. and it goes up in smoke. >> that's awesome. >> reporter: but sway says the issue goes way beyond this demo. the team recently uncovered a major vulnerability in more than 100 devices made by cisco. the largest manufacturer of

equipment. according to red balloon, we're talking about a potential attack that could sell for millions. they let cisco know what they had found and the company published this critical advisory. cisco turned down a request for an on-camera interview, instead releasing a statements saying in part cisco is committed to transparency and is not aware of any malicious use of the vulnerability that is described in this advisory. fixes are available for approximately half of the affected products. we wanted to find out what other industry leaders are doing to protect their embedded devices and reached out to hp and huawei. both companies were not part of red balloon's findings. hp is the largest manufacturer of printers which contain embedded devices. ade andy rhodes is head of hp's commercial pc business. his company's advertising claims to have the world's most secure printers. >> we put this special code into the print sorry it's always

the south is preparing for another bolt of wild weather tonight. this after six people were hurt at a golf tournament in atlanta. it happened yesterday when they were next to a tree that was struck by lightning. >> nbc's morgan chesky with the latest on the path of the storm. >> reporter: a lightning strike hit the pga tour championship in atlanta, caught on camera. the supercharged bolt shattering a tree near the 16th hole yesterday, sending debris in every direction. play was suspended, the course

evacuated as emergency crews tended to the injured. six in all including billy kramer. >> all of the sudden there was this boom to my left. people were screaming and running away, and i thought as i was on the ground that the tree was going to fall. >> reporter: all the injured expected to survive. >> it turns out i'm lucky. i think way luckier than could have been. could have been a really catastrophic event. >> reporter: today was better weather, the games back on with everyone keeping a much closer eye to the sky. >> making sure when we get weather advisories everyone is taking shelter. >> reporter: another lightning close call came two weeks ago. cameras captured a south carolina teacher stumbling after a strike just missed him. so far this year lightning killed a dozen people nationwide. the most dangerous time, the summer, when outdoor recreation collides with a busy storm season. authorities stressing the motto when thunder roars, go indoors. in arkansas, it wasn't lightning but heavy rain that proved

deadly. a ft. smith woman killed, swept away driving through high water. tonight flood watches extend to louisiana. also watching tropical storm dorian, churning in the caribbean. the national hurricane center says it could get stronger by early this week, putting puerto rico and other islands in its path. >> rob mayeda, watching this with the professionalial interest he often has with topics like this. >> the southeastern u.s., unlike what we have in the winter, they get their peak rainfall this time of year and it's usually enhanced by tropical systems and storms which move in across the gulf coast or southeast. we haven't seen that much but this week ahead and the first week of september is typically the busiest for the atlantic hurricane season. so we'll see how that plays out with that system approaching the bahamas. right now nothing tropical about san francisco. that's the fog and misty skies. that will have an impact on the morning commute and produce visibilities for places like the golden gate bridge where it's 58 degrees, comfortably cool.

still mild in san jose at 68. we'll see a few patches of low clouds trying to steal into santa clara for the morning. and you probably wish the low clouds could reach walnut creek as we're still in the mid to upper 70s inland after a high of 97 degrees. and it's the east bay that will see the worst of the heat and the air quality tomorrow. enough so that the ground level ozone concentrations are unhealthy for sensitive groups that triggers a spare the air day. inland east bay hottest temperatures and probably the worst air quality to start the week. winds are still technically onshore. so the heat is mainly a valley event for the next two days. coast and bayside temperatures still mainly in the 70s and 80s. so for the morning, 50s coastside. inland could wake up to some mid-60s. kind of a mild start to the morning. concord and antioch, close to 100 degrees. 101 in ukiah, but relief a half hour drive back to the bay. 70s and 80s from san francisco to oakland. upper 60s around half moon bay.

95 and probably hotter around san martin for your monday afternoon. so the cause of the warm-up today and tomorrow will be high pressure strengthening, but the most important item of the weather forecast is what happens if that tropical moisture to our south. we have a tropical storm that you see some of the high clouds drifting on by. that tropical storm is no longer there. but look where the moisture kind of drifted away from that lower level circulation to the south. and the weather models indicating here in green, that's going to sweep up towards the bay area. notice the time stamp. looks like tuesday into wednesday. more of that moisture starts to come on up, which might drop temperatures a bit. but at the same time, humidity is going to go up. so it's going to feel extra muggy outside as we start the week. right now it doesn't look like we're going to see anything in terms of substantial rainfall. but that could be a problem. mid level moisture, especially this time of year and the ground being very dry, this is still a chance of some isolated thundershowers, especially around the sierra and offshore where most of that moisture right now looks like it's going to hang out off to our west.
