we'll introduce you to the 6-year-old artist. the news at 11:00 starts right now. and we begin with breaking news in orange county. john wayne airport is in the dark. you can see the video here. this is the primary arpirport t get to disneyland. all flights in and out of the airport were cancelled or diverted. sfo and oakland all reporting cancellations. nbc bay area's cheryl herd from oakland international with more. cheryl. >> reporter: well, raj, five flights cancelled alone. two at sjc and one at sfo. flights that didn't get airborne have been grounded since 7:00. that's when the power outage happened because off a transporter going out. leaving passengers inside stranded.

all flights to john wayne airport were held at the gate or diverts to other airports. guests are advised to call the airline for information. that applies to the bay area. all flights to and from john wayne have been cancelled tonight and the airport will a not reope.en until 7:00 tomorrow morning. workers are working to restore power. so if you're planning to take a trip to orange county or to pick someone up, be advised to call ahead. reporting live at oakland international airport, i'm cheryl hurd. >> the coroner says the person that garling festival killed himself. here at gilroy police head quarters with the latest.

>> reporter: well, the police chief and the fbi had each said that three police officers shot that gunman and that may still be the case but the county coroner now says the gunman managed to somehow shoot and kill himself with his own rifle. according to investigators 19-year-old santino opened fire and fired at police officers. he was hit several times and fell to the ground. now the coroner says did not die from those winds. >> and once he was down, he was able to get a round off and shot himself. >> reporter: police chief says he was surprised by the coroner's finding. the gunman managed to get the barrel of his a a 47-type rifle into his moulgt. >> this changes nothing.

they eliminated the threat. >> reporter: during a news conference thursday, he described the three officers as heros for taking swift action and they're not the only ones. >> when they said i think we've been shot, i immediately thought i've got to get him to the hospital to a doctor. >> they had just been shot in the shoulders and in a bab. he rushed them to the hospital in his own vehicle. >> i just did what i hope anyone would do for my loved ones. >> they were released thursday and didn't know their hero's full name. >> i want to thank john. i hope that's his name. >> reporter: now it's not yet clear how many times that gunman was shot by those three police officers. that's a detail that should be revealed when the full coroner's report is released. reporting live at gilroy police

to a family sun bathing. emergency crews will clear the area. they tried to clear the victims trapped under the rubble. natural erosion likely caused that cliff to collapse. and a north bay city targeted by burglars. most in the day time. nbc bay area in san rafael with the details. jean. >> reporter: police say burglars are breaking into homes here when people are at work. there are neighborhood watch groups here and tonight police are urging residents to take a look around before they leave for work. and report anything and anyone suspicious. >> i got in the bedroom and realized everything had been taken out of the dresser andi things in the closet. >> he was shocked to find his home burglarized a few weeks ago.

tonight san rafael police say he not alone. >> most of these burglaries are during the day time when nobody's at home. there have been instances where windows have been broken. others where they use tools to gain entry. >> reporter: eight of those burglaries happened in the lake forest neighborhood. >> and a similar case with jewelry last week. they're not sure if all the break ins are related beutthey know they're taking jewelry and electronics. victims and neighbors are investing insecurity systems. >> it's a wake-up call. obviously. it's a violation and you're thinking what can i do to avoid this ever happening again? >> reporter: police say they are

steppi stepping up patrol asking anyone with a security camera to review footage and look for possible clues. caught on camera. a shooting in fairfield. this happened yesterday evening in a shopping center. a strip mall. if you look at the left corner of your screen you can see two men run up to each other. one pulls outa gun and begins shooting. we blurr the video. the victim is expected to survive. a hate crime, vandalism or both? contra costra deputies arrested this man for vandalizing a bay point neighborhood. they say he spray painted graffiti, including racial slurs all over cars and homes earlier this kweek. week. but even though it appears to be a hate crime, it's not. they say he had a personal relationship with one of the

victims that made the vandalism look like a hate crime. >> whether it's an african-american male, a white male, it doesn't make a difference. when these kinds of things hap andn there's an indication riltszer a hate crime, it's not acceptsable. >> the district attorney has the final word on whether brown will be charged with a hate crime. a dangerous weapon is out of the hands of thieves and bac the hands of of the fbi. this semiautomatic rifle was stolen three weeks ago from an agent was car in oakland. that happened across the street from the coliseum near the in-and-out burger. they also stole bull andts an fbi jacket. they ar recovered the rifle monday. in antioch upset the city is building a bathroom right next to its memorial.

>> reporter: the city of antioch takes pride in its patriotism. signs of that are on display all over town. >> it is a pretty patriotic town. >> reporter: but they say there's nothing patriotic about the city's plans to put in a bathroom that foot of their downtown memorial. in fact construction has already started. and vets say it really stinks. >> i don't understand why would they do this? why would they dishonor our veterans this way by putting a toilet next to the memorial? >> they're going to use it as a hangout. probably graffiti the monument. they're go doing trash the area right there. >> the commander of antioch vfw says if the city doesn't change its plans, expect a boycott.

a close call today and it was all caught on camera. a mom, her 8-year-old son and a family dog rescued from a rocky cliff. firefighters used ropes that top off a 300-foot cliff. they tried to rescue the family stuck 20 feet down. they're used to doing cliff rescues here but it's still dangerous every time. >> we lowered him at the beach level andy with had some high tide concerns but once we looked at the tide log we knew we had a window of about 30 min lts. >> now the mom and child and dog are all safe. fire crews are want to remind everyone to always stay on the trails. well in the wake of the gilroy shooting, the union for the san jose police is canceling a rifle for a rafal. it was promoted in an ad. the proceeds were supposed to go to the police department chaplain program. but they say after what happened

in gilroy, the rafal no longer felt right. they did send 70 officers to assist in gilroy after the shooting. well, more cops and surveillance. fremont is beefing up security for the festival of the arts that draws nearly 400,000 people each year. officers are bringing undercover officers and a surveillance power and more. >> i hate for people to not exercise their freedom by going out enjoying the community. >> event oorganizers will be collecting donations for victims of the shooting. the husband and wife team were shot and injured in gilroy. they were supposed to be working at booth in fremont this weekend. new details about the lyft bikes bursting into fwlams. we've learned it it happened ind san jose and berkeley. they pulled thousand oz of the e bikess off bay area streets.

they're operated under name bay wheels which believes the battery is to blame. lyft has not yet commented. taking our out dated 911 call centers and updating them. the governor touring the emergency comcenter today. he said the technology dates back to the 1970s. it was built to accommodate land lines and doesn't mesh with cell phones. >> the reality is they don't have the technology, the tools to connect. they don't have the capacity to redirect call volume if something goes wrong or there's a surge in that volume. >> you see mayor brooed with the governor. this is the third straight day the governor has promoted new funding to strengthen the aging emergency response system. and not just a twitter sensation. he's legit artist and he just turned 6 years old.

comfortable start. 62 in the peninsula and 66 for the try valley. notice you're in the 50ss for san francisco and the north bay and east bay with an average of 62. it's another one of those days where you head away from the kois and the temperatures are going to get that much hotter because of the hot area high pressure we talked about. 93 in gilroy and as you near the bay and the coast, you can see things drop off to 87 in cupertino. over to east bay, most widespread heat here from antioch to pittsburgh and pleasant vill and dan vill in the mid to upper 90s. maybe it's the fremont vestival of the arts. should be said the ciwant tos club is going to be eaccepting donations near the nbc bay area booth. we're handing out free stuff

tomorrow and on sunday you can head out and see storm ranger, our mobile doppler radar. you can get up close enough to actually touch it. super cool. right here through the peninsula, 84 and up to daly city a cooler 65. all of san francisco in the 60s dpept except for the mission which is in the 70ss. and in the north bay, 84 it mill valley. my extended forecast in san francisco in the 60s. inland valleys 94 tomorrow. by monday 87. we get clouds moving in. some tropical moisture off to the south. and then you can see down to the low 80s as you move through next week's forecast. we talked about tropical storm erick. and the good news for hawaii, they're both missing hawaii on a direct hit.

going green. sfo is going to be the first airport to ban the sale of single-use plastic water bottle. so that means you can buy them that airport or bring your own. this takes effect august 20th. sfo is 100 hydration stations. where you can fill up your containers after you pass security. . >> might be reuse bottles. so an excellent idea. >> sfo estimate airport vendors sell about 10,000 water bottles per day. and beginning next week going paperless. the idea is to cut down on paper waste. so they're rolling out clipper card only stations and the first to make a station is the 19th street station in oakland.

this is a great story. the a's signed a guy right off the street. he was throwing heat in a challenge for fans. 96 miles per hour. so his brother posted this clip on twitter. the a's liked what they saw and signed him to a minor league contract. before we go we know it's been a difficult time in the bay area, especially for everyone in gilroy. we thank you for trusting our coverage friendship. from everyone here at nbc thank you and be safe.
