6:00 am
i )m laura garcia. >> a revery good morning to you, it's tuesday. i'm marcus washington. we'll get to your traffic in just a moment but kari has good news as we embrace these cooler temperatures. the heat up is coming. >> you better take it in now. it's going to be hot heading into the weekend. today not so bad, even though we're starting out with the clouds and fog, we'll get sunshine later today. it's mostly cloudy right now as we take a live look outside in san jose. here's our temperatures for southeast san jose and evergreen. it will be in the low 80s and little bit close to normal. we'll be just slightly above normal today. here's a look at the 7-day forecast and the trend we're on as we head through the first day of summer, 90 degrees and it jumps by 10 degrees by saturday. some events going on around the bay area as well. mike, now you're tracking a crash in san jose. >> we see crash and slowing, here's north 101. look, really hitting the brakes
6:01 am
north of 680. let's show you on a map what we're talking about, northbound 101 which i just showed you, the cameras here, the crash is much farther north at oakland road but notice this, we see speed sensors lighting up as you get close to the crash scene. they may have moved this from the middle lane to the shoulder. i'll double check with chp but a quick build for this portion of highway 101 from tully road past 880 for san jose. the rest of silicon valley great, tri-valley east bay no problems, just a build across the san mateo bridge in san francisco. the bay bridge has the backup at the toll plaza but this crash looks like it cleared off to the shoulder at the ups pullout there. west 880 moves nicely through south 101. i'll continue to track that if chp says lanes are blocked but i think they just cleared it. >> good to know. >> we do continue covering breaking news in the east bay. at least one person is hurt after an overnight gun battle between union city police officers and several suspects.
6:02 am
>> this all happened off of railroad avenue. p pete surraatos is live at the scene. you were asking the questions what led to the violence. >> good morning. there's still a lot of questions as far as why the three suspects who we're now learning from police were all juveniles, why they were pulled over in the first place, that information is not at least being disclosed by union city police. we just talked to them but they did confirm they were all juveniles in that car that tried to get away from an officer involved shooting. there's that car we've been showing you all morning long. now that we're getting daylight, you can actually see bullet holes in that car. now this is where the scene ended following the officer involved shooting. i asked police if that's the car they couldn't confirm it. but as you can see there in the video, that's where the bullet holes are in the car where the scene ended. but you're looking at when they were trying to look for these suspects near railroad avenue and whipple road and according to union city police, they are saying the shooting happened
6:03 am
roughly around 11:30 p.m., officers stopping a car not too far from here near e street and railroad avenue. a gunfire exchange takes place between several officers, about six officers and the suspects learning are juveniles. and that's when the gunfire exchange toopts. they point out none of the officers were injured. now the suspect drives the car to this area where we're standing at railroad avenue and whipple road. the suspects jump out and run into the surrounding neighborhoods, all are located and taken into custody in this area, one of them sustained a gunshot injury and taken to the hospital. that injury is not life threatening, you're looking at the scene clearly still active and like i said, that appears to be the car where those suspects were in when this all happened. but police say there's no ongoing danger to the public but it's still an ongoing investigation. we're live in union city. pete"today in the ba bay." >> thank you so much, pete. >> yes. >> at 6:03. to washington, d.c. this
6:04 am
morning, where there is growing outrage after new pictures and video and audio surface from inside a texas detention facility. >> this is sparking a nationwide debate about separating migrant children from their parents. "today in the bay's" tracie potts is live in washington, d.c. with the response from the trump administration. good morning to you, tracie. >> hey there, marcus and laura. the trump administration says they are simply following the law. others on both sides of the aisle here, democrats and republicans say it's cruel and inhumane and we're seeing this growing chorus of people who are concerned about how the trump zero tolerance policy is being rolled out. >> sounds of anguish from behind a chain link fence. migrant children sleeping on floors waling for their parents, mocked by a border patrol agent. >> the audio provided by a civil
6:05 am
rights attorney not verified by nbc is sparking outrage. >> they need to end this policy. it is unconscionable and immoral and it is wrong and it is unnecessary. >> this is government sanctioned child abuse. >> strong defense from the trump administration. >> we have to do our job. we will not apologize for doing for our job. >> president trump blames democrats for a law that does not exist. separating migrant children from their parents prompted by his zero tolerance policy in april. >> the united states will not be a migrant camp and it will not be a refugee holding facility. >> the government is caring for more than 11,000 migrant children. president trump will likely be confronted about it when he meets with republicans on capitol hill tonight. >> and that 11,000 we could be looking at 20,000 or more
6:06 am
according to the latest estimates by the middle of the summer. in fact before the end of the summer of the marcus and laura? >> just certainly one of those cases that month matter where we stand, people will be talking about this for some time. thank you so much, tracie. >> our coverage continues next with a complete border battle fact check. the information you need to know about the kids being separated from their families as well as the breakdown of the current immigration policies. >> san mateo county leaders will follow through on the end of a new state law that limits the collection of fees for placing juveniles in custody. parents in the past could often be on the hook for thousands of dollars but a new state law took effect in january ending the collection of those fees. san mateo county expects to forgive more than $12 million in debt. >> sonoma county cold case just moving forward today. the man accused of killing two young campers in their sleeping bags on a beach in jenner will face a judge. the prosecutors say shawn michael gallen of forestville
6:07 am
shot and killed lindsay cutshell and her fiance in 2004. the case was cold for years until now. authorities already arrested gallen last year in a deadly shooting of his brother. several weeks following that arrest they named him as the lone suspect in the jenner case. today he could enter a plea in court. the search is on this morning for the man seen robbing a business in san jose. police say on may 1st, this man you see here in the black beanie walked into a public storage store with a hand gun. right there you see demanding money from the employee. this is the store in east san jose. that man took the cash and then hopped into what you see right here, a silver blazer and then sped off. >> housing advocates in concord want to get the word out about the city's new relatively new option to pay unfair rental hikes. about a year ago they approved a rent review program and it's for tenants during any one year.

and the group helping tenants will hold the first two days of outreach meetings to let people know about their rights. sonoma county leerds say homeowners are running into more and more frequent problems during heavy rains. rupturing of privately owned and sometimes anty quait eed sewer lines run to the county owned main sewer line. the water agency wants to create a new order permitting inspection and required repairs when necessary. tonight they'll hold the first of three meetings to discuss the plan. we start out with a cloudy morning all across the bay area. even inland as we look outside in dublin. i've been watching these trees moving around. it's still breezy out there as we start out this tuesday morning. let's go to concord where it's going to heat up fast today. we're starting out in the low 60s but we'll already be at 72 degrees with sunshine at 10:00 and heading into the low 90s
6:09 am
today. 3:00 we're hitting that high temperature of 91 degrees. and if you want somewhere cooler to go, maybe head to some of the hiking trails along the peninsula where we will have patchy fog and it stays in the 50s throughout the afternoon with breezy winds there. 57 degrees. we'll talk about what's ahead as temperatures get hot this weekend. and the crash in san jose, still not clear? >> i thought it was. judging by the speed sensors but they were a little bit deceptive. we're showing the live shot again, traffic from time to time starts to move a little better, getting by the crash farther north. here's 101 northbound at 680, 280 gives a good meter how the volume is building. this is from tully up to oakland road. it's solid red and crash still reported in the middle of the roadway. that will be a problem. no major injuries but quickly building commute may force more traffic at 280 and 87 jogging around the ripple effect we talk about. we also talk about this where
6:10 am
pete was reporting the officer involved shooting there. the investigation continues on a railroad and whipple is also closed and that's important because it does cut off folks from getting to or from mission boulevard over here. now most of the warehouse -- the trucks are okay and target and shopping center are further over it's not a major problem for this morning but it will be a pain for many hours as they get around that scene that has the closure. the rest of the bay moves nicely. approach towards the bay bridge does show the backup. a slower drive now just about a half hour from highway 4 to the berkeley curve and backup at the bay bridge. back to you. >> thanks, mike. we got much more for you here on "today in the bay," including marijuana at the market. the marijuana prescription drug you could see at pharmacies. >> a mess ahead for your money as the markets look like they are going to have a very rough day. >> it's horrible and like i said, it's i guess kind of expected in this climate that horrible things like that -- >> later a controversial sign

6:13 am
it's 6:13. let's go to los gatos where the skies will clear quickly and temperatures go from the low 60s
6:14 am
to the low 80s by the afternoon. we'll top out at 85 degrees today, it's going to be warmer than yesterday and that warming trend continues as we go through the week. i'll talk about some hot 100s in the forecast. that's coming up in about five minutes. >> we're looking at 33 minutes for highway 37. you're slowing and jammed out of vallejo, and then heading over towards novato. on the peninsula, easy drive. traffic just getting over there via the san mateo and dumbarton. >> good morning to you. rough seas ahead. the tesla with all kinds of problems this morning. but the biggest problems are going to be the red arrows ahead on the stock market. these two men are trading swea s threats over trade itself. saying america is ready with the second set of tariffs in case china responds to first set. who started this is up for debate. president trump says china
6:15 am
started it but the bottom line and the disaster ahead this morning on the stock market is we're seeing this morning we're ready to respond to their response to our response that's made a mess of stock markets. tesla says it had another fire at its manufacturing plant. it's had a series of small fires, nobody hurt. this apparently happened on sunday and elon musk told employees tesla has been the victim of sabotage. the e-mail says somebody messed with computer systems and stole data. he doesn't specifically link the fire to the sabotage. >> we were talking about how musk promised investors tesla will make 5,000 cars a week starting this month and remember, this month is more than half over. it's not clear how the sabotage might affect that promise. who did it? how about voekz wagen? he hints it was other car companies. he says there are a multitude of big gas diesel car companies
6:16 am
that are willing to cheat so much about emissions, maybe they are willing to cheat in other ways. now, remember, elon musk also raised sabotage after one of his facex rockets blew up in 2016. nobody was hurt and spacex speculated a sniper might have been responsible and hinted again its competitors could have been responsible for that one as well. it turns out there was no sabotage. there was no sniper but we're hearing the sabotage idea again. now, if there was sabotage, something i've been pursuing is was there some sort of criminal case filed with the fbi with fremont police? >> some kind of investigation. >> there's been a crime committed. >> especially the cost of that. >> we're following up on that and hope to have more information for you. >> sounds good, thank you, scott. >> the first federally approved marijuana prescription drug could be heading to pharmacies soon. u.s. food and drug administration will decide whether it's going to give first of its kind approval. the drug is called e pet low

6:18 am
>> affects the bottom line in the household. >> you can take those pets in their in good health, take them out to enjoy the day. >> nice and warm and we always tell you that when it gets really hot, never leave your pets in the car and that includes today as we start out with the clouds this morning. we're seeing that live as we look outside from the window in palo alto. it's looking pretty good as you head out on this tuesday morning. we're going to see those temperatures going from the low 60s into the upper 60s and at noon, 70 degrees. heading to the low 80s today and little bit warmer than it was yesterday. the 7-day forecast is at the bottom of the screen. you'll want to look at that before you make any plans and going out boating it's going to be a great day for it. a little bit more choppy than it was yesterday as the fog clears. we'll see those temperatures in the upper 50s and westerly winds building up to 20 knots and waves at 3 to 4 feet and mixed
6:19 am
swell of 3 to 4 feet as well. if you're allergic to grass pollen, take the allergy medication. here's your reminder right now. looking at all of our high temperatures today, it's going to be a little bit warmer today than it was yesterday, reaching up to 90 in gilroy and 83 in milpitas and 90 in danville. 75 in san mateo. mid-60s in san francisco and some mid-80s nor the north bay heading out to the outdoor funk and r&b concert in orinda. i'm trying to give you plans and make it better to enjoy the week. it's going to be warm to start. mid-80s but it does cool off nicely. most likely by the end of the con kert. make sure you're prepared for that. it's going to be hot over the next couple of days and here's the reason why. we have high pressure causes the air to sink and it also changes our wind direction. we won't have the ocean breeze. in fact our winds will be blowing offshore. so we won't have our natural air conditioning and it's going to get really intense by saturday which will be the peak of the
6:20 am
heat. as we head over to mike, what are you tracking right now? >> hot weather for one thing, not looking forward to that. meanwhile, over here towards -- building commute, the upper east shore just fine. heading down towards the berkeley curve, we have reports of a stall around the maze but no problems as far as lanes blocked as far as i know. we'll track that over at 580 and 80. over here, west 24, good news, the connector over the tunnel has reopened after an earlier crash took a while to clear an overturned vehicle getting off towards the streets towards berkeley. another crash causes more distraction and backup. from the caldecott which is clear to fish ranch, you have a lot of slowing because of this crash. we'll track that over in contra costa county. highway 24 moves nicely off the walnut creek interchange. san jose northbound 101. we have a crash still at oakland road clearing to the shoulder but this is the backup from way back here from about tully to the shot past 680. avoid that if you can.
