7:02 am
tomorrow night's highly anticipated republican debate. this morning it leaves one candidate not be on the big stage is slamming that process. peter alexander is in cleveland. good morning. >> reporter: hi, matt, good morning to you. you've got the main event in prime time tomorrow night, the under card hour earlier. one candidate put on the earlier ticket is calling the entire process pro posterous. john kasich is in and rick perry was out. they say what separated kasich from perry is the opinion of 50 people. front and center donald trumps at 23%. the billionaire developing mapping out his strategy overnight. >> i'm not looking to hurt anybody or embarrass anybody.

if i have to bring up deficiencies, i'll bring up deficiencies but certainly i'm not looking to do that. i would rather go straight down the middle. we don't know what's going to happen. >> reporter: breathing a sigh of relief after barely making the cuts, chris christie and john kasich appearing on home turf. the happy hour debate, hours earlier with fewer viewers. santorum calling it a flawed election process, saying they should not be picking winners and losers. and also missing the cut, two republican vifales who hit trump the hardest, rick perry. >> it is the cancer on conservatism. >> and lindsey graham. >> reporter: tomorrow jeb bush will be asked to clarify his position on women's health issues.
7:04 am
>> i'm not sure we need a half billion dollars for women's health issue. >> reporter: late tuesday, hillary clinton pounced. >> got no problem giving billions to powerful super corporations but i guess women's health isn't a priority. >> reporter: in a statement bush said he misspoke noted he favors providing critical women aegs health service but federal money should not be spent on planned parenthood. also, overnight, jeb bush released his personal financial disclosure forms and while he is not a billionaire, like donald trump, he does have estimated net worth between 19 and $22 million. savannah? >> all right, peter alexander, thank you so much, reince priebus, chairman of the of the republican national committee. good morning to you. >> good morning. >> the debate stage is set and anticipation is high and viewership is supposed to be enormous and right center stage,

donald trump as the run away favorite the are republican voters. did you think this is how you would introduce voters to your republican candidate? >> we have a lot of them, no question about that. he's been doing quite a job in the polls but you've got governors and successful business people and neurosurgeons, obviously members of congress. look, there's a diverse field. it's a young field. everyone is -- brings a little something different to the table. i think it's going to be a great night. that's really what we did anticipate of our party. >> how do you explain the phenomenon of donald trump? he's doubling up the competition. no one is even coming close to him. one of the candidates, rand paul, has called it a temporary loss of sanity in the republican party. do you agree with that?
7:06 am
>> well, look, what i think is that there's a lot of people out there that are pretty frustrated with government and both parties. and i think that donald trump has tapped into some of that and i know it's early. i think donald trump knows it is early and everybody understands it. it's going to be a long process but ultimately the real issue here is hillary clinton, barack obama and the fact that the country is really not in a good place right now and hillary clinton had a lot to do with it and she's got a lot of questions that people are asking her, including i think yesterday the fbi is now asking questions of hillary clinton. so that's really savannah, what the focus is. we're not going to focus on each other. i think you're going to see a republican party unified, talking about how to get the country back on track. >> in fact, the fbi, according to a report in "washington post" is looking into the setup of her e-mail server. we're going to get a report on that in a moment. not looking into hillary clinton herself. >> i think any time the fbi is
7:07 am
sniffing around your computers and your home, it's probably not a good thing. who knows what the fbi is looking at. >> let's talk about mr. trump and this final issue. last time you and i spoke on this show, you said you didn't think trump would mount an independent campaign and yet he's still hinting it it as recently as monday, saying right now the republican party has been treating me well but he won't rule out an independent run. it's almost like he's dangling this out there. be nice to me or else. >> well, look, i've had great communication with donald trump. we've had good communication with his campaign. we don't see it. i don't see it. he's a person that wants to win and obviously winning requires someone to run as a republican against hillary clinton or joe biden or whoever it is. he gets that and everyone understands that running as a third party is a death wish. and i don't see anyone doing
7:08 am
that that expects to be a winner in the end. he gets it. >> finally there's speculation, that vice president biden might get into the democratic side of the race. would you welcome him to the race? >> well, look, you look at these numbers for hillary clinton and just a casual observer, obviously something is wrong. joe biden is far more likeable. >> is he a tougher opponent? >> i think that he's -- i think he's probably tougher. i think hillary clinton has a lot of problems. i think she is an opponent easy to define, a lot of problems being associated with the state department that didn't get things done overseas and a lot of problems generally. if you look at the polling numbers, even women are really not even gravitating towards hillary clinton. so i think joe biden is someone that a lot of people, whether they like his politics or not,
7:09 am
they like him and likability, whether you can analyze politics all you want, likability is probably the number one issue on the ballot. >> reince priebus, i know you'll have the popcorn out tomorrow night when republican candidates take this stage. thank you. >> you bet, thank you, savannah. >> we'll be staying up to watch that tomorrow night. >> absolutely. >> savannah just mentioned that democratic front-runner and hillary clinton and e-mails as secretary of state back in the news. andrea mitchell has more on the new fbi investigation. good morning to you. >> good morning, mat matt, there is fallout about the private e-mail server. a government official confirms the fbi is looking into how the system at her home was set up. as part of this investigation as to how secure it was. this is in response to the two inspectors general who asked the justice department to look into how classified information was handled. the private system was first set up by a political staffer during
7:10 am
clinton's first run for the white house. it was later turned over to a private company after several system failures while she was secretary of state, including during super storm sandy. the official told nbc news, this is an investigation of the system, not of any person. in a statement the campaign said that clinton did not send or receive any e-mails that were marked classified at the time. but this of course has now emerged as a campaign issue and could have contributed to the sharp decline in our new polls in clinton's favorable ratings. >> andrea mitchell, thanks. crews in northern california are finally getting a better grip on the stubborn rocky fire. the state's largest wildfire, but they still have say long way to go. joe fryer is live once again. what is the latest there? >> reporter: good morning, savannah, cooler weather is helping firefighters slow the spread of flames. the fire 20% contained but temperatures should rise today. this thing has behave the so

7:12 am
right now but the one named rocky is putting up the biggest fight. >> we're not out of the woods on this yet. we've done a lot of really good work but we've got a work to go from here on out. >> reporter: the commander here says he's worried about what's to come this fire season, typically a massive fire like this one does not happen until late august, september or even october. savannah? >> joe fryer, thank you so much. >> we could soon find out if the piece of a wing found on a remote island off the coast of madagascar was indeed from flight 370. it's now in france where specialists are beginning to examine it. nbc's chief global correspondent bill neely is there. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. we know that the part that's inside here is from a boeing aaa. the experts will be trying to answer two questions, is it from mh-370 and can it tell us anything about how or why or where that aircraft crashed. the answer to the first question is simpler.
7:13 am
is there paint or serial number on the wing flap that could identify it as being from malaysian airlines. the second one much, much harder. they'll use a machine that can magnify 100,000 times to look at the damage on the wing flap and rips and tears to see if it hit the water at speed. and from that to work out is the plane intact, largely or did it disintegrate on impact. they'll look at the shells, the barnicles on the wing flap to work out the temperature and chemical composition of the water. that might pinpoint exactly where the plane is. one leading expert told nbc news do not expect miracles. we might know soon if it's mh-370, the rest will have to wait, perhaps until the black box recorders are found. >> hopefully those answers will come very soon.
