coming up on "early today," security threat. an apple ios bug lets fake apps sneak on to your iphone and ipad putting you at risk. hard time ahead for the captain and crew of the capsized korean ferry that killed over 300 passengers. a day to pause and remember america's military men and women on this veterans day. plus, the startling and bizarre events surrounding joan rivers' death. also, a nasty new florida sinkhole clears six homes and swallows another car. and ford is taking a major risk with its biggest moneymaker. it is tuesday, november 11th. breaking news, shock out of south korea. the ferry disaster verdict is in. the captain was acquitted of murder. prosecutors wanted the death penalty. instead, he's getting 36 years for negligence. as the ferry sank, this image became infamous, the captain, in his underwear, jumping ship, abandoning hundreds of students. incredibly the bodies of six people remain missing from the april disaster. a bitter winter storm continues to march across the midwest and it could be the biggest prethanksgiving storm for michigan's upper peninsula since 1991. some areas might see more than a foot. likewise, in wisconsin, where they're breaking out the snow blow blowers. some folks are looking at a blanket of a foot and a half. 17 inches of snow in minnesota caused 180 accidents state wide. in new york, it is the subway slap heard around manhattan. take a look.

cops say taunting triggered the brawl. the woman who was hit was behind it. she was making fun of the guy's jacket. the blow knocked her back five feet. within seconds, others jumped in. by the next stop, it was over and four were arrested. world leaders from 21 countries are meeting in beijing for the apec summit. hours ago, a breakthrough for the president announced what could be a major economic understanding between the u.s. and china. we learn president obama met with president putin on the sidelines. nbc news white house correspondent kristen welker is there. kristen, what's the latest? >> reporter: that's right. according to white house official, president obama and president putin met three separate times on the sidelines of the apec economic summit for a total of 15 to 20 minutes them discussed a range of issues, iran, syria and ukraine. this comes as relations between the united states and russia are

at their lowest point since the cold war. we understand that president obama was planning to press president putin on the issue of ukraine. white house officials saying there are no plans, however, to enact a new round of sanctions against russia. but making it very clear that that is not out of the realm of possibility within the coming weeks. meantime, president obama tried to foster stronger relations with president jinping of china, part of his so-called pivot to the asia pacific region. some critics argued president obama hasn't been focused enough on this region in recent years. president obama holding a number of private meetings with president xi including a private dinner this evening and then the two will hold an official meeting tomorrow and we anticipate we'll hear from both leaders after that meeting. as you mentioned, president obama also announced a new trade deal with china, which would lower tariffs on some high tech goods, including things like medical devices. this is the first stop on a

three nation trip tomorrow. president obama heads to myanmar, known as burma. back to you. >> kristen welker reporting live from china, kristen, thank you so much. a new report on the death of joan rivers is out and reveals what really went down inside that upper east side clinic. here's nbc's stefphanie gosk wih the shocking details. >> reporter: this report highlights a list of missteps. among them, one of the doctors treating joan rivers did not actually have privileges to practice at the new york clinic. rivers did not give informed consent for all the procedures she was given, and one member of the medical team actually took cell phone photos during the procedure. the report also states that the drop in rivers vital signs was not immediately noticed. the comedienne was eventually resuscitated but never regained consciousness. in a statement, lawyers for rivers' daughter melissa writes, miss rivers is outraged by the misconduct and mismanagement now shown to have occurred before, during and after the procedure.

yorkville end scopy commented as well. in response to the statement of deficiencies, yorkville immediately submitted and implemented a plan of correction that addressed all issues raised. the clinic adds the doctors involved in the incident are no longer practicing there. >> that was nbc's stephanie gosk reporting. slow moving lava reached its first home on hawaii's big island. the stream of molten rock hit the home monday afternoon. the renters had already left because of evacuation orders. the house burned down in about 45 minutes creating a huge plume of smoke. the next closest home is about half a mile away. now, it is time for a look at the weather and here is nbc meteorologist bill karins with a look at what's coming our way, bill. >> good morning. some amazing challenging forecasts across the country, with this arctic blast. i was reading one of them in the portland area, columbia gorge, and the east winds blowing through. cold air is not just invading

the middle of the country, it is spreading in through areas of idaho, spokane, burst of snow last night and that cold air will push all the way, almost to the coastal areas. and the reason it is a challenging forecast, unusual to get the wind and arctic air moving in from that direction. we're at 22 right now in spokane, 25 in boise. in the 40s in portland. temperatures will be dropping as the east winds gust. the windchill in spokane now down to 7. not as bad as montana or friends in wyoming. casper, about a 12. you get an idea of the cold air, not just spreading into the middle of the country. 24 hour temperature change also shows temperatures have come down compared to this time yesterday. for your veterans day, plenty of sunshine, but hold on to your hats there, especially in areas around portland with 43. that's your

well, today is veterans day, and across the country men and women who have served in uniform will be honored. solemn ceremonies will be taking place in the nation's capitol. this comes as the department of veterans affairs plans to make sweeping changes to ensure vets get the treatment that they have earned.

nbc's tracie potts is in washington with more on what we expect this veterans day. >> reporter: dara, good morning. lots of events are planned here for today. behind the scenes there is a lot of work being done to make sure the veterans get what they deserve. the wreath is laid at arlington national cemetery, and veterans gather at the world war ii memorial. they'll be thinking not only about their sacrifice, but the challenges many now face getting health care, and other benefits. >> they need and deserve better medical treatment. >> reporter: on monday, new va secretary robert mcdonald announced the largest restructuring in va history to deal with long wait lists that kept veterans from seeing a doctor. he's building the case to fire up to 1,000 employees, hire 28,000 more doctors, nurses and technicians, and give every

veteran a single point of care. >> we need to make sure we get things right. >> reporter: vets we spoke to agree the system needs to be streamlined. >> if you don't have the computer, you're lost. you have to go to the local library. >> reporter: veterans groups are hopeful that mass firings will send a message. >> everyone wants to see that, they need to see that you can't do this to people and get away with it. >> reporter: but it is not just health care. the backlogs to get disability benefits is about eight months long. >> that backlog is unacceptable. >> reporter: senator casey and others are calling for a hearing to examine whether changes at the va are enough. but at this point, it is not clear if a lame duck congress will have time to deal with this or if it is something that the new congress will need to pick up after they're in office in january. dara? >> tracie potts in d.c., thanks so much for that report. now to other stories making news this morning, no nose gear, no problem. this plane had to make an emergency landing near houston. the pilot tried a few times bouncing along the runway.

then the final attempt. nose down. it screeched to a halt, no injuries reported. you can see two people just get up and walk out. more tense moments north of there in oklahoma. it took hours of negotiations, but a hold up gunman with two hostages gave into police. no one was hurt. the question now, what ties did devin rogers have to the building or his captives. >> that's something we will try to clarify later on through the investigation. try to determine what his motivation was, why he was upset, et cetera, et cetera. it will take a day or two to get that. later today, the new york doctor who tested positive for ebola will be released from the hospital. he's been declared free of the virus. that means there are no longer any known cases in the u.s. a sinkhole in florida swallowed an entire car. six families were evacuated from nearby homes as a precaution.

stocks kicked off the week in green with futures higher. your iphone and ipad could be at risk. researchers at cybersecurity firm fire iron incorporated are warning a bug in apple's operating system makes most iphones and ipads vulnerable to cyberattacks. they say the attack can steal banking and e-mail logon credentials and other personal data. apple has not yet commented. mcdonald's is recalling more than 2 million hello kitty happy meal toys due to a choking risk. and a truck will be made about 700 pounds lighter, improving fuel mileage. he probably thought the wedding ceremony was expensive, well, billionaire howard hamm has been ordered to pay his ex-wife a cool billion, that is a b in a billion dollars, in a divorce settlement. much more up ahead on "early today," including a very lucrative catch by one cricket fan. if only baseball offered the

in his left knee. he was injured dure the fourth quarter in sunday's win over the rams. palmer missed his emotional reaction. >> i'm not going it lie, i cried like a baby last night and i'm not an emotional guy. and this fan makes an incredible one-handed catch at a cricket game. but there is more. the new zealand northern knights were running a promotion, any fan to catch a six on the fold would win 5,000 new zealand dollars, equivalent to 4,000 u.s. dollars, so it looks like that catch really did pay off. interesting week of weather and especially oregon and through the mountains of the cascades. we have the cold air in today. not too many problems with the snow oregon ice or anything like that. just cold and very windy. especially in areas of the gorges, any of those areas little peaks and valleys in between the cascades. here comes wednesday. we have moisture coming up from the south. that's good. we need some rainfall in this

leading the news on the nbc affiliate in tampa, wfla, delta airlines loses dog before flight to tampa. the owner was traveling from los angeles to florida. he was told the dog bit through the kennel and escaped. delta says it is investigating. and on today.com dad builds ironman costume to help sick infant feel brave. the baby has been hospitalized since the premature birth in july. he made it out of foam fabric and a red onesie. some other stories we're following today. 15 hikers had to be rescued after getting lost during a day trip in southern california. a sheriff's helicopter hoisted them up from the steep mountain side. at least one female hiker said she was injured during the rescue.

this holiday sign is causing quite a stir in florida. it reads, dear santa, this year please give me a big fat bank account and a slim body. please don't mix those two up like you did last year. that's the funny part. well, dillards says it will remove the sign from all sales floors. after six days with his head stuck in a plastic pumpkin, look at this deer, it finally is free. volunteers with an animal sanctuary in owe owe were able to catch the animal and take the pumpkin off. can you imagine six days with that. hopefully the deer could get food and water. >> candy. here is a story, if you may like twinkies, but could you eat 120 of them? >> look away. >> in six minutes. this is disturbing. that's what matt stoney did to make himself the world twinkie eating champion this weekend. beat out the defending champ joey chestnut. stoney won $2500 and in case you're wondering, some of the other accomplishments, and this is a list, include eating 43
